heather jenkins: was previously with a manipulative and physically abusive boyfriend, has no friends anymore due to him and has run away into the cold winter to find a new life away from someone she used to love.

samantha litzenger: she just dropped out her senior year and got kicked out of her parents house. now sam is working at her local record store trying not to roll her eyes at every ignorant music lover she see’s.

bella skinner: a plus-size model and is a huge advocate for body positivity despite having none for herself. of course she tries to love herself but it’s hard to after the years she had to deal with before-hand.

gentle oola: despite her name she’s far far from gentle. lives in the sylvan glade with her parents being rulers and her next in line for the throne. sadly though that just isn’t the life gentle has made for herself as she’s often getting in trouble with her land’s laws and climbing up trees to see beyond her soon to be land.

Update - Research 5/19/17

I’ve found through reading several essays, similarities and difference in how the word ‘container’ is used.  For my practice, as an animator I am constantly trying to find a narrative to follow.

The readings I will bring information from - so far - are as follows: “This Must Be the Place: Underrepresentation of Identity and Meaning in Climate Change Decision Making”, written by W. Neil Adger, Jon Barnett, F.S. Chapin III, and Hedi Ellemor*

“Buffalo Hunt: International Trade and the Virtual Extinction of the North American Bison”, written by M. Scott Taylor*

“The Risk of Entering Relationships: Experience From A Norwegian Hospital”, written by Ellen Ramvi

“Mapping Taiwanese ecodocumentary landscape: Politics of aestheics and environmental ethics in Taiwanese ecodocumentaries” written by Kuei-Fen Chiu

I want to create a narrative that revolves around the loss of an open, free world - things are contained in this society. With constant construction, there is a very heavy sense that we, as people, are being forced into containers. Animals too, are treated this way. In the journal entry/article written by Kuei-Fen Chiu there is a focus on the destructing of environment, tearing apart animals’ lives, and the power that documenting such destruction can benefit a community. In order to bring a community together, ecodocumentaries often used techniques to cause emotional attachments to the imagery. A particular documentary mentioned in “Mapping Taiwanese..landscape...”, named Swing (p. 20) focuses on the orangutan and how these animals were taken in as pets, “Opening with juxtaposed shots of an orangutan swinging freely in a rainforest [verses] an imprisoned orangutan swinging restlessly in a cage..” (20). Further reading, the swinging of these orangutans in the cages was a sign of “obsessive-compulsive mental disorder..”(21)  It is cruel, and yet there are several examples of this sort of capturing and domesticating animals in the world today. Aquariums, Sea World in particular, has been under a lot of heat with the release of a documentary Blackfish in 2013. The documentary narrates the lives of killer whales, and how detrimental it is for these massive creatures to live in a closed off environment.  This idea, that lives are needed to be contained, is supposedly a natural progression - however, witnessing animals who collapse from containment, it is clearly unnatural.  Perhaps the same can be said about humans, it sure is stressful when there are deadlines upon deadlines on top of other goings-on - and you look around and that’s how everyone lives and it sure feels like a container. Though, it is also seen as good, to keep yourself busy, to avoid an unproductive cycle. Perhaps that is all we need, an openness to how we view responsibility. One hand, good - the other, bad. So we avoid the container that is societal norms, mortgage payments, car insurance. Mainly money. Always money. 

So I move on to the Bison Hunt, a slaughter in this case. The essay I read, “Buffalo Hunt: International Trade and the Virtual Extinction of the North American Bison”, written by M. Scott Taylor, spoke a lot about how bison hide was traded steadily during the nineteenth century, and literally killed off almost all Bison in North America. Money, controlling the action of many, a container that benefited trade and economy, but also destroyed landscapes and a whole population of bison - and in turn damaged the lives of First Nations effected by the eradication of their lands’ bison. It is how the world worked then, and still works:

          “..stories of frontier hardship, shaped much of American national identity by showing how self- reliance, risk-taking, and hard work could tame a wild frontier. “ (3162) - these stories could also be read as a way to contain populace, in the way that goals and dreams are created only because it benefits economy/government.           “..authors argue the elimination of the buffalo was a secret goal of government policy; or merely complicit, by turning a blind eye to the slaughter hoping it would solve the Indian problem.” (3187) - First Nations were pushed aside, again, contained through the act of ignorance.  “..the destruction of the herds would have a beneficial effect in reducing Indian resistance.” (3188)

So far, I have three images that will continuously loop in an animated sequence - I will post these images/illustrations in the coming weeks, along with the narrative. As well, I will read and research further on climate change and First Nations - to support the way in which land is a part of a containment. I am planning for each image to have it’s own narrative, but eventually come together in the end, whether this is by imagery or storyline, time will tell.  Thanks for taking the time to read!
