Jesca Hoop Interview: Connect the Dots
BY JORDAN MAINZER
In a career that’s seen her collaborate and tour with some of the best songwriters new and old, Jesca Hoop has released her finest album to date, Memories Are Now. On her Sub Pop debut, Hoop takes on the sadder sides of human interaction--breakups, cut connections--and argues for their necessity, especially when the alternative is no connections at all. She brings her usual lyrical ingenuity and bluesy folk guitar style to the table and taps a Fiona Apple-seasoned Blake Mills to produce. Ultimately, with Memories Are Now, Hoop has created an album’s worth of mantras, anthems, and hymns for the modern age.
I got the chance to interview Hoop over email about the new record, its album art and music videos, working with Mills, and learning from Iron & Wine’s Sam Beam. Read it below.
Since I Left You: Memories Are Now has a sense of longing for relationships, between both humans and their loved ones and humans and strangers. What inspired this?
Jesca Hoop: Relationship is all encompassing. There is no one thing that exists in isolation. Human relationships occupy much of my mind and present many questions. The way we humans relate to our environment in interaction with our plant and animal friends as well as the elements also vexes me. We all need connection. We do mad things to find that connection and we are often mislead in the process. My writing's purpose is to connect in a true and lasting way.
SILY: On "Simon Says", you say, "Don't forget life before the Internet." What's your personal relationship with the Internet nowadays?
JH: I have mixed feelings about living in the information age. I value communication, and I see many great benefits to this rapid mode of transference. At the same time, I am unsettled by it. I HATE...sitting at my computer and wrestling with the learning curve on devices or programs that bring me little joy. The more emails you send out, the more you get back and the faster...it can drive person fucking nuts and suck the life straight out. I think I’m going to have to draw a line.
SILY: On the record, how did your work with Blake Mills differ from past times you've worked with him?
JH: In the past, Blake fulfilled a different role. I made my first three records with Tony Berg in his studio Zeitgeist in LA. That’s where I met Blake. Blake simply arranged and played on my first two records. On the third, he co-produced with Tony Berg and Shawn Everett. Blake's playing has informed much of the sound of my records over the years. With this new record, I thought it was important to try something new. I grew to trust Blake as player and musician and friend over time, and it made sense to call him on him as producer.
SILY: What did you learn from writing, recording, and touring with Sam Beam? What do you think he learned from you?
JH: I learned to be gentle. To be trusting. I learned to write and then rewrite. I learned to relax. I learned to simplify. I don’t know what he learned from me. You will have to ask him.
SILY: What do you hope to convey in the live performance of these songs different than in the recorded versions?
JH: With music, I like to think of it as treating the mind, the emotions, and the body. Music has a great ability to transform what it touches. My hope is that people will feel better on their way out than they did on their way in. Simple. In live music, there is a transference, a give and take that happens between the audience and performer that doesn't happen directly with a recording. We are building a set that brings in songs from across my catalog. For the most part, it will be skeletal but with great moments of rhythm and lush sound. I’ve been saying the set is a skeleton that has still its internal organs...but no skin.
youtube
SILY: What inspired the videos for the title track and "The Lost Sky"?
JH: So far with video making, I have put my total faith into the video director. “The Lost Sky” was directed by Elia Petridis. Elia is an old friend and collaborator of mine. I asked him to come up with a treatment that conveyed the feelings around abandonment...the confusion and pain that come along with an unresolved breakup. I gave him a simple seed, and the video is the tree that he grew with it. “Memories Are Now” was directed by Annlin Chao. I called her for her unique approach to animation. I put total trust in her as well with relatively little guidance.
SILY: What inspired the album art of Memories Are Now?
JH: The cover was inspired by an endorphin being delivered to the brain by some protein thingymabob. Take a look...see the resemblance?

This VR Horror Short Will Drop You In The Middle of a Séance
New Post has been published on https://nofspodcast.com/terrifying-vr-horror-short-will-drop-middle-seance/
This VR Horror Short Will Drop You In The Middle of a Séance
You’ve been invited to a Séance..
Horror VR has been landing fast and furious as the technology adapts and becomes more widespread. Among the major players, even Youtube and Facebook have gotten in on the action. I don’t know how many times I’ve scrolled through my Facebook feed and stumbled across those creepy clowns gutting that poor man in 360 degrees of HD. And- Even I, a wuss, got in on the VR action a few months back with the It: Float VR.
Well, we’ve another doozy for you.
Jaunt VR has picked up their latest terror, Eye For An Eye: A Séance in Virtual Reality. The 360 degree short is directed by Elia Petridis of Fever Content. Using strategies such as positional audio, green screen technology, real actors, and much more, ‘Eye for an Eye’ is one of the first 360 VR experiences to explore live-action VFX, stands out using classic techniques to seamlessly integrate practical effects with digital imagery.
Watch the short, below. Keep in mind – this does work best with VR glasses. Even google cardboard will do. If you don’t have either, you can watch using the the arrow keys to pan and rotate through the 360 degree short.
youtube
Synopsis
In the veins of classic horror storytellers like Lucio Fulci and John Carpenter, Writer/Director Elia Petridis tells the story of a group of friends who attend a seance to try and find a missing friend. Unbeknownst to them, however, their psychic medium is in contact with the vengeful, eyeless soul of a child named Marcus, who was brutally murdered. He can only pass to the next realm by finding, and forcefully taking, an appropriate set of eyes.
There’s more horror VR where that came from. Check out the other spooky shorts from Jaunt.

The company has also created cube installations that can be installed on a temporary basis – there was one at the Grammy’s party – or more permanent. The cube a VRLA will feature two brand new games powered by SofaVR allowing smartphone users to interact with the person in the cube, making it a much more social experience.
