I Chose the Wrong Romance in a Game About Regret, and It Made the Game Better
A love letter to BioWare about Dragon Age: the Veilguard.
I don't have the thoughts in me for a formal review of all the aspects of gameplay at this time, nor do I have the brainpower for dissecting my every theory just yet.
But tonight, I want to write to you about the thing that stuck with me the most about Dragon Age: the Veilguard. And that is... I chose the wrong romance for my Rook, and it made the game unforgettable.
Veilguard endgame spoilers below the cut.
(I just liked this tiny screencap, okay. This specific dialogue isn't what I want to talk about.)
For a few days now, I've been trying to think of how to phrase what I want to say. The emotions I felt in the endgame of Veilguard were massive—to the tune I became dehydrated. To convey why that was, I think I have to start at the beginning.
This is the story of Winged Death: the party, the romance, and the headcanons that formed a nightmare combination to break me emotionally.
Meet my Rook: Thenera Sa'renan Aldwir, or Nera for short. A Veil Jumper who lost her mom to blight sickness when she was a teen; who tried to find the Wardens at Skyhold only to learn they'd been exiled; who joined the Veil Jumpers to protect people, but also honor her mother's memory. (Yes, all of this becomes relevant.)
Her name is taken from elven: Thenera from theneras (dream), and Sa'renan from sa (one; one more) and renan (voice). I used the patronymic system outlined in Project Elvhen: Sa'renan was her mother's name. I chose all this in late August, long before I'd really theorized anything substantive about Veilguard.
I did not know how much it would hurt.
All through the game, I got more and more into Nera's head. This was helped out a lot by how much footage I'd seen in September, how I knew Nera would be the "throw a chair while beating up an entire bar" Rook rather than try any attempt at diplomacy. How I knew she'd punch the First Warden without second thought, despite not knowing what the First Warden had done before Weisshaupt. She was always the "hit things with rocks to fix them" Veil Jumper to me, just like Bellara's dialogue references.
It also meant that I felt a lot of her insecurity in the early game: her doubt in her own intellect; her insecurity in her Dalish identity from being kicked out of her clan as a child and living in Wycome as a young adult; her acute awareness of her own trauma and fear around all things blight. To mirror my Inquisitor, who had Dirthamen vallaslin, I gave Nera Falon'Din vallaslin, to signify that she had seen too much death at far too young an age.
I even picked a party for her "default" group: Lucanis and Davrin. Because of Nera's Falon'Din vallaslin, Lucanis' demon wings, and Assan's battlefield presence, I gave my group a name: Winged Death.
And I loved them.
But just like I'd headcanoned a lot of Nera's backstory, I also hypothesized a lot about the Lucanis romance. And, to put it briefly... the game did not match what I expected, and the Lucanis romance was not to my enjoyment, personally. (If you like it, good! I'm glad you do! This post is about Nera, though.)
Right away, Lucanis asked about Nera's favourite drink. When she said tea and he made a disgusted noise and nothing else, I reloaded, choosing the "better" answer of liking the same coffee as him—something that prompted more dialogue. For me, in hindsight, this was the first moment I should have seen that for all Lucanis' charm, he would not fit my gruff, chair-throwing Veil Jumper. But I'd committed, and I was determined to see it through just once.
I didn't want Veilguard to be the story of an elf romancing an elf—for me, that was my Inquisitor's story. I wanted a new flavour.
Only... Lucanis' romance, for Nera, did not pick up much from there. Almost the entirety of act 2 was silent—and that was after saving Treviso. Lucanis seemed to care more for Neve and Minrathous than he did for Rook, in my perception. By then, I'd sunk into Nera's headspace, and I could feel her feeling neglected. I could feel her insecurities rearing their ugly heads: was she too blunt? Not intelligent enough? Somehow too elven, even for a Crow, whose organization is made up of so many elves?
You know who she constantly found acceptance in, though? Whose approval triggered almost every time Nera answered a question honestly, in the stern way that she was predisposed to do?
Davrin. The other half of Winged Death. The one who, now, was bickering with Lucanis almost nonstop in party banter, each constantly jabbing the other about how death would come for them, death would claim all they'd known, their choices would bury them.
Lucanis had precious few opportunities to discuss Nera being an elf; an elf Rook facing down their own gods. But Davrin? Davrin talked about it so much, he would know the horror of being called Da'len by Elgar'nan.
Together, they survived the Cauldron. And where did they shelter? In the ribcage of a slain archdemon. But not just any archdemon.
Zazikel. Who has been confirmed now, in a Veilguard codex, as Falon'Din's archdemon.
And where were the griffons allowed to go, at the end? Arlathan.
I could never have foreseen those parallels, and yet? There they were, piling up too late. I'd already made Nera's choices for her, and I'm not someone who would normally attempt a love triangle.
(She's so pleased with their shenanigans. Just look at that totally carefree and happy face.)
Lucanis' content dried up for Nera, but stayed pretty consistent for Neve—to the point that she had begun to feel sincerely cast aside. I began playing her with that mindset: as if she'd been set adrift, even as she locked in Lucanis' romance.
Around 45 hours into my ~60 hour playthrough, I found myself thinking... maybe I try the Davrinmance next game. Maybe I reroll Nera, even as a Veil Jumper again, to see those griffons in Arlathan. To see two Dalish elves haunted by the same ghosts, and see how they grow. I talked to friends about it. I even headcanoned some more, trying to see how Nera's narrative and personality might slot in with Davrin's questline.
In my head, that looked a little like Nera realizing she felt stronger kinship and connection with Davrin, but denying that to herself. She was, after all, locked in with someone else.
I let myself laugh at this, taking more screenshots of Nera and Davrin than of Nera and Lucanis, right up until the beginning of act 3.
And that's how BioWare got me.
If you're here, you know what comes next. I didn't.
I thought I needed Harding to potentially face down Solas, thanks to her line about wanting to look him in the eye after one of Solas' memories. I thought, maybe, some dialogue would unlock by having Harding in the party during any potential final confrontation.
This was the second time I went against Nera's own character: I chose to keep Harding at Nera's side, rather than Davrin. I did it for my Inquisitor.
And at first, I thought Davrin was surviving my choice.
I even felt happy—proud—that I freed him during the Ghilan'nain fight. I thought if I delayed too long, he might die to the fight's mechanics. But he survived that, too.
Then, the worst played out before my eyes: Lucanis going to take the shot at Ghilan'nain. Being caught. Davrin, racing in to defend. Being impaled. Lucanis hitting Ghilan'nain, only to appear suddenly dead—dead, somehow, how could he be dead, I'd just seen him?—seconds later.
Because of Arlathan, I'd thought this was just another Elgar'nan trick. Solas would come to save us soon. He had to. This was just fake-Solas, conjured by Elgar'nan to make Rook lash out or feel lost. Right?
It didn't hit me until I was in the Fade, and Solas was gone. Until Neve's statues were everywhere, because Nera had chosen Neve to risk that dangerous magic. Neve, who was her very antithesis; who was human enough and sophisticated enough and eloquent enough in ways my spellblade had struggled with reconciling since her teen years.
Saying it was my fault, that my Rook chose this for her—and she had. Her decision was motivated by her favour for Bellara.
I think this is when my Rook stopped denying things to herself. Right here.
This was the person she was closest with in her own party. This was the person who shared her feelings on both her culture and the blight. This was the person who brought joy to her days, with more meaningful dialogues (in Nera's opinion!) than Lucanis had had since act 1.
It is hard to put into words how hard this moment hit me. She had chosen wrong—and I had chosen for her. I was reminded of Taash's line from after Memory #2: "There was stuff he wanted to tell her. But he waited too long. And then she was dead."
And then she was dead.
My Rook knew why Fade Jail held her so well, in that moment. Even before the Varric reveal that had my tear ducts begging for mercy.
The game's mechanics had done that to her. Locked her into a romance with Lucanis (my choice, hellbent on seeing it through), didn't let her leave, didn't allow for her to say anything akin to, 'Hey, Davrin, not in this worldstate... but how about the next one?' (and all of those, for the record, are 100% understandable, and just the nature of video games!)
Lucanis continued to have little in the way of content that fit Nera, and was First Talon, to boot. Nothing in the game could change that; games aren't designed that way. He was destined for a life she was never going to enjoy, locked in to that choice—and she, and I, should've figured it out sooner.
We didn't. Varric was dead. Everything had been a lie. We'd been duped; played. We were never smart enough; together, we were doomed all along.
Every insecurity I'd imagined for Nera came crashing down. And all of them, I'd gleaned from hints in Companions Week. From the footage that released on September 19, showing Rook's backstory choices. From the overall tone of the promotional material we saw, and the strong emphasis on companions, and the declaration of the theme of regret.
And it culminated in me crying harder than I have at any piece of media.
Ever.
Ever.
BioWare gave me every hint I needed to make a fitting Rook, and every single choice they showed me I could make was a weapon. That's why I not only accept, but appreciate the 'spoilers' that we got from Bioware beforehand. That's why I am so far from jaded about the Lucanismance. I could not denounce this experience if I tried, and you know why?
Because through Lucanis' continued flirtatious banter with Neve, the way he stays continually animated so close to her, and the way he gives the same mid-combat praise to Neve as to Rook, my Rook felt like a woman scorned. And it made the game BETTER.
I wouldn't have cried so hard, for so long, if Nera was allowed to be happy. I wouldn't have been shaken to my core as a Solavellan, wondering if there really could be a light at the end of this long, dark tunnel.
The game wouldn't have hit me like it did if Lucanis hadn't come to Rook to declare his feelings only after she had spent time mourning Davrin and Assan. It wouldn't have hurt so good if Lucanis' dialogue afterward never mentioned his worry for exclusively Neve, and not the loss of Davrin—who he'd travelled with all game long.
But Solas had done it: he had molded Nera into a creature of pure regret.
And I, through my determination to try a romance that turned out not to fit my Rook, had let him.
The way it was structured, Lucanis' every sweet word rang hollow after Nera was freed from the Fade, and it made Davrin's, Varric's, and (what I thought was) Neve's deaths hurt that much worse.
There was nothing that could fix the pain in Nera's heart, the pain of her wrong choices not just in failing to romance Davrin, but failing to question Solas, failing to notice peculiarities about "Varric" in the Lighthouse. She felt like she failed, and she had. Undeniably. Because no matter where the conclusion of the game would take us, she'd never end up happy. She'd never want the life of a First Talon's spouse.
Every piece of her character lined up with regret, all at once. It all clicked into place, all in two soul-crushing hours.
Her name is Thenera Sa'renan Aldwir—and she was the victim of a dream of just one voice. She wears Falon'Din vallaslin, and was given a moment to spend time alone with the many, many dead.
Falon'Din: friend of the dead. That was what Nera had become, wasn't it? Because her closest party member—and what might have been her truer love—would not be coming back. Because I could feel that a part of her did not want to leave Fade Jail, and that Emmrich really did have to pull her out.
Winged Death destroyed her.
She rained down fire and lightning all through parts 13 and 14. She became Wrath and Thunder. I let her hit enemies harder than she had to, wasting her mana at every opportunity. Let her vent her every frustration. All I could think of, through the hurt, was this codex.
Elgar'nan, Wrath and Thunder, Give us glory. Give us victory, over the Earth that shakes our cities. Strike the usurpers with your lightning. Burn the ground under your gaze. Bring Winged Death against those who throw down our work.
Nera became all that was left of Winged Death, having let Lucanis fight with the Crows, taking Taash and Harding instead.
Elgar'nan was resistant to all her magic in that final fight. She was weakest at the end, and I didn't want to change her specialization to avoid that fact. She was broken, deep down. Solas' happy ending did not fix what the game had done to Nera's heart.
She, the other half to my Inquisitor, ended up with the opposite fate. Where my Inquisitor's journey on the din'anshiral was ending (or at least, was no longer alone), Nera had thought she had the companionship she wanted, only to wind up on the din'anshiral alone, with no way of recovering Davrin.
Which brings me to her last parallel: Solas' devotion to Mythal. Saying that if he did not tear down the Veil, then "I—she would have died for nothing."
To love someone and say nothing; it twisted them both up inside. Rook and Solas, always intended to be mirrors. One death, enough for each of them to bring the Eldest of the Sun to his knees. To change the elven pantheon forever.
I don't know how I managed to stumble upon this level of pain, but I could not be gladder that I did.
So, at the end of this extremely long post, here is my praise for BioWare. You mad geniuses, if any of you ever, ever see this... you wove regret into this game so well, so deeply, that my own passing thoughts about romance beats and game mechanics wound up stabbing me an additional time in Fade Jail, just as deep as the wound of Varric's death.
So well was this narrative constructed that I found my Rook in every corner of this story, even its tiniest references twining with every headcanon I had made.
Veilguard is so good, so profound, that a romance that did not work for me made the game better. That, to me, is the mark of a kickass narrative: one that fits almost any headcanon while still delivering on a deep, resonant theme.
BioWare couldn't have known that my party would be "Winged Death." Couldn't have known Nera, or her position as a Veil Jumper, or her doubt in her own intellect and her own ability to love. Yet, that is the beauty of Veilguard and of Dragon Age in general: they don't have to know. The writing is brilliant enough that it fits as much as one single story can in terms of possibility, while still hitting home with the same theme for everyone.
So thank you, BioWare. Thank you to every writer, to every animator, to every amazing, talented human whose hands and minds touched this game.
I needed the cry after a hard year, and you all delivered in the best way. I'm doing the Davrinmance now—because I think it's right to try it, and I think Nera deserves it—but this run will always hold the dearest place in my heart. The one where the regret bloomed, in part, because of jokes and headcanons I had made in the middle of a romance I did not enjoy, wishing for a different second playthrough.
The one where it all stabbed me, all at once. You bastards. (affectionate)

hi, anon that woke up just from post with belen and shiro is here!!
to be honest, i don't play favourites (at least i try...) all butlers are my sweethearts and i'll die for them🫶but if i'm really forced to choose... *whisper* don't tell others i said that but my top-6 are (not ranked, just in random) berien, teddy, belen (🥴i'm a weak woman, i won't deny it...), amon, lamli and lato. i'm really chasing after that sweet flavour of being wanted carnally/hj
but of course the only butler that holds my heart fully is muu! he's my baby💖
i'm really glad that my ask made your mood better! we all have hard days sometimes and it makes me happy that my ask managed to help you a bit during tough times!! pls take care of yourself, stay hydrated and sleep healthily :)
sorry idk if that's ok but if it's possible can i be a 🐈⬛anon?
i totally get your taste (maybe a bit too much?) lol, i love characters that are head over heels kinda crazy for MC or smitten with them at least ✨
but yes, all the characters are so well written and well-designed that it’s very difficult to have solid favourite. for me it gravitates between which character’s content i most recently consumed. there’s a lot of Bellen and Shiro fan content (on twitter which i highly recommend checking out!) so I’m crazy for them right now 💞
also man, Bellen has me so weak—because that voice actor? that appearance?
lastly, i have a very, very weak spot for characters that are the reliable and calm type (who also like calling themselves MC’s or the other characters older brother-figure ✨) Bellen did that in one go 😭
like that conversation on the home-screen where he tells MC/the player that if they would like it, they can treat him like an older brother, even call him ベレンーお兄さん—that did things to me okay?
(he’s similar to Caleb from Love and Deepspace in this regard—and yes i love him too ✨)
i can simply not wait to read his card stories this weekend〜especially the card where he’s in a bar. like my mind is running wild with ideas about what’s going on in the card story. ahem, i got too into it—
i love Muu as well! I’m really glad he’s included in almost every story content we get from the game. I’d really love it if someday we get an option to use him as a butler on our homescreen and he can have cute voice lines (๑>◡<๑)! the summer event story of this year where we got to see him in the background feature was definitely a step towards maybe getting him on the homescreen?
i mean, story wise Muu is incredibly relevant! i hope we continue seeing more about our lovely cat butler 🐈⬛
and thank you so much, I’m doing a lot better (≧∇≦)! sleep and time really do wonders on making you feel better 💕
by the way, anon, are you planning on pulling in gacha for our elf and cat boys? or are you planning on saving up?
I think the devs will do a huge Halloween event this time you know with our new addition of butlers too \(//∇//)\! I think I’ll save up for Halloween because I have a feeling the cards will be fantastic!
and of course, it’s completely alright! you’re my first anon (you know who asked for an emoji to refer to them as! i…don’t know what this is called 😭, an emoji-anon?) anyway, you’re my first so this feels really nice! it’s a pleasure, 🐈⬛–anon!
i hope you have a great day, 🐈⬛–anon! make sure eat and sleep well 💞
i wish there was an option where we could add friends in aknk—I would have love to add some of you there. but it’s lovely conversing on tumblr as well (๑>◡<๑)! the eng-fandom isn’t too active on other platforms, at least from what I’ve seen.
#🐈⬛ anon!#mark my words there will be a huge Halloween event—i hope they change the whole background setting just like the summer event this time 💞

Bergamot and Beans Ch1
AstarionxTav, Coffee/Tea Shop AU - set post endgame. First meetings, falling in love, eventual smut. (And a little angst!) No warnings apply.
WIP - subscribe on Ao3 or follow for more.
-
“You’re late,” Alfira said, removing her apron and levelling a disappointed look at Maeve.
“I know, I know!” Maeve huffed, throwing her satchel behind the counter and pulling an apron on. “I done got stuck talking to Master Sinclair, didn’t I? Y’know how he drones on in the evenings.”
Alfira strode away from the counter and picked up her lute, beginning to tune it.
“Maeve, you know I have no idea what any of these people are like, right?”
“I tell you about them all the time!” Maeve turned to Alfira with an exasperated look, pinning her wild red hair out of her face.
“Yes, but you know how you drone on.”
“Oh, shut it, you make me listen to every bloody detail of your life,’ she said, haphazardly clipping on her name tag.
“That’s because it’s far more interesting than boring old monks in a stuffy library… Oh. Wow…’ Alfira trailed off, looking over Maeve’s shoulder. She cleared her throat and continued. “You have customers, by the way.”
“Feck, sorry, okay, what can I–” Maeve turned to face the men behind the counter, plastering on a smile, and found herself momentarily dumbstruck by a strikingly beautiful elf. “…get you, gentlemen?” She hoped she had managed to brush it off as being flustered.
The more harried human of the pair spoke first, asking for a strong cup of coffee with a frightening amount of sugar. Maeve raised her eyebrows at his request - she pitied whoever had to spend time with this man after he consumed it.
“Sure thing, and what about yourself, sir?” Maeve said, turning back to the elf, stealing a moment to properly look at him. He was gorgeous, all perfect lines, and soft-looking hair. He reminded her of one of the marble statues she had studied years ago - the seductively handsome devils playing at being angels.
“Coffee isn’t really my drink.” He sounded almost bored, leaning against the counter, but there was a soft smile playing on his lips as he looked at Maeve. His red eyes seemed to stare straight into her, and she tucked a strand of hair behind her ear self-consciously. “Surely there’s something more… appetising?”
Well here at Bergamot and Beans we're known for our wide selection of teas! 23 flavours and counting,” Maeve said instinctively, gesturing to the shelves behind her.
Hell’s inferno, she thought, what a tosser I sound like.
“Elkazaran Breakfast’s the most popular,” she supplied, when he raised his eyebrows.
“Sure, why not?” he said, and looked almost… disappointed.
“Great, have a seat and I’ll get those ready. A copper each, thanks.”
They dropped the coins on the counter and Maeve turned away to prepare the drinks as Alfira started playing her set, the opening bars to Somebody’s Girl filling the shop.
When they were ready, she set them down in front of the two men, the human man thanking her far more graciously than a simple coffee delivery warranted. That, and his amusing order, earned the two of them what would be her only genuine smile of the night.
‘Enjoy! Let me know if you need anything else,’ she said, unintentionally directing it towards the pretty elf.
“Thank you, Eveaw,” he said with a smile, and far more warmth than she normally received from customers. She lingered for just a second, to savour the feeling, until two women walked in and signalled the start of the evening rush.
Maeve was already halfway back to the counter when she twigged to what he said. She looked down at her chest and read the name tag there: ‘MAEVE’.
It was upside down.
She muttered out a curse and tore it off, throwing it under the counter as she greeted the two women.
Several more people came in after, and by the time she had a break in service to come check on them, the men had already left. The coffee cup had been drained completely, but the lukewarm tea was almost entirely untouched.
-
Several hours later, Maeve pulled her hood closer around her face as she turned down a dark alleyway.
She stepped down a set of stairs to a basement door, and palmed a silver coin to a dwarven man sitting in front of it.
“Good to see you again, Morrigan,” he said in a low voice, opening the door for her. “You’ve got a nice crowd in there. Good luck tonight.”
“Thanks Darmund. Shan’t be needing it, if it’s anything like last week.”
Darmund laughed quietly, clapping her on the back as she passed through the door. The sound grew as she ventured deeper into the building, down another flight of stairs and through the twisting halls, until she emerged into a large, dark room filled with people and a smoky haze.
Lakrissa found her quickly, taking her cloak from her and ushering her to the edge of the ring.
“I like the new hair colour,” she said, twirling a lock of it around her finger, “the brown suits you.” She looked down at her fingertips, noticing the residue it had left there, and wiped it off on Maeve’s shoulder.
“Thanks. It’s only temporary. I figure now I’m making a wee name for myself, it might serve to be less recognisable down here.”
“Smart thinking. Now you're just another copper-a-dozen half-elf."
"Thanks," Maeve said dryly. "How's looking in the ring then?"
"Well, it sounds like you might finally have a challenge on your hands again, there’s a new fighter in your class with some real buzz. Betting’s against you, so you stand to profit if you win.”
Maeve tucked in the ends of her wrist wraps, flexing her hands to test the fit and watching her opponent do the same.
She looks strong, but slow, she thought.
Maeve was right - once she got in the ring and dodged a few pot shots, she was practically dancing around the other woman, teasing her and trying to goad her into a mistake.
One lapse and I’ll have her. It was almost too easy.
But then, through the haze over the other woman’s shoulder, Maeve spotted a flash of white hair across the room. Her eyes followed it, mind wandering to her interaction earlier that day.
There’s no way he’d be down here.
“Get your head in the game, Morrigan!” Lakrissa shouted from behind her. Maeve realised her distraction a moment too late as a fist connected with her jaw, hard .
-
Three evenings passed before Maeve saw the two men again at Bergamot and Beans.
“Not a fan of the Elkazaran Breakfast were you?” Maeve asked when they approached her.
“...What? Oh, uh, no, it was fine,” the elf said, taken aback. He wasn’t the first to be surprised by her sharp memory. “But nevertheless, I think I’m in the mood for something different today.”
“Of course, what tickles your fancy?” Maeve said with far more enthusiasm than required. She cringed internally as she listened to herself.
“You know what? Surprise me.”
His eyes travelled down to the side of her face, clearly catching the purpling bruise on her jaw. Maeve quickly turned her attention to the other man.
“And for yourself? Strong and sweet again?”
He was looking a jot less harried than the last time he was in, but still had an unmistakable air of disarray about him. Typical wizard.
“You remembered!” he said, brightening visibly. “Yes please.”
As they walked away, Maeve caught the beginning of their conversation.
“See Astarion, this is what a little loyalty gets you…”
Astarion. Maeve mouthed the name silently, filing it away for later. A pretty name for a pretty man.
This time, she double checked her name tag before delivering their drinks. Just as she had hoped, Astarion thanked her with extra emphasis on her proper name, so she risked a wink at him and earned a slight smirk back.
Returning to the counter, she kept an eye on the elf, watching for a reaction. He sipped his tea, looked decidedly unfazed, and continued his conversation with his very animated friend. Maeve didn’t see him touch the cup again.
Bugger.
--
Two nights later, right at the end of the evening, the bell above the door tinkled.
Maeve looked up from the book she’d been engrossed in for the last half hour to see Astarion again. But he was alone this time.
“The lemon green was a bust too then?” she asked, fatigue dulling her usual chipper work-voice.
“Not my favourite,” Astarion said with a chuckle, and she was struck again with that curiously intent stare of his.
“Keen to try something else then? A little more floral perhaps?”
“Dealer’s choice,” he said, waving his hands in her direction.
Maeve gestured for him to take a seat as he dropped a copper on the counter, and she turned to survey the shelves of tea.
She heard his footsteps a few seconds later than she anticipated, like he had lingered. Probably looking at my arse, she thought – he wouldn’t be the first.
Her fingers trailed across the jars of tea before settling on the jasmine. White flowers for white hair.
Maeve brewed two pots of it and when she turned to take one over to him, she jumped, surprised to see him sitting at the counter just a few seats down.
He appeared to be engrossed in a sheet of paper in front of him, a pair of gold reading glasses perched on his nose, but Maeve caught him smirk when she startled.
“Thank you, Maeve,” he said when she set the pot down, a hint of ritual to his speech.
“Yer welcome, Astarion,” she said, holding back a wee grin.
He paused in his movements, looking up at her with narrow eyes, like he might say something. But he breathed out a little ‘huh’ and his face softened again, his eyes still on her.
“You’ll want to pour that quick, it’s a delicate wee brew, the jasmine.”
“Well, don’t let me keep you from yours then,” he said.
“Of course,” Maeve said, and tapped her fingertips on the counter. “Enjoy.”
She returned to her own seat, pouring out a small cup and inhaling the sweet smell of it, watching him over the rim of her cup as she pretended to drink.
When Astarion tasted the brew, he made a face that could only mean “Meh.”
Maeve chuckled into her tea, and he looked over at her.
“Big fan of that one, are ye?” she asked.
“I’m starting to think tea’s not the drink for me either.”
“Don’t be silly, love. Just have to find the right one, don’t we?”
“Three down, twenty more to go,” he said, nodding at the shelves of tea.
“Hopefully it doesn’t take that many. I’ll have to go looking for some more options then!” she laughed.
“Gods forbid,” Astarion said, looking back at her with a slight smile. Maeve held his gaze for a moment, and when his eyes travelled back to her yellowing bruise, she looked back down at her book.
They sat in relative silence for several minutes, Astarion taking one sip for every 10 of hers, until Maeve slammed her book closed.
“What a feckin’ idiot!” she muttered, taking another drink of tea to calm her down. She noticed Astarion looking over at her. “Sorry, didn’t mean to interrupt.”
“It couldn’t have come at a better time, actually. This report was threatening to put me to sleep for the first time in my life.”
Maeve snorted indelicately into her tea, and luckily he spared her a remark.
“What are you reading then? Who’s the fecking idiot ?” he asked, mimicking her accent with surprising skill.
“Elminster Aumar’s Extended History of Faerun - you’d think the bloody man had never left Baldur’s Gate, what with how much he’s made up. Doesn’t know a feckin’ thing about The Whalebones…” Maeve stopped herself before getting too far down that path. Alfira could pretend to listen tomorrow.
“Gods below, what convinced you to pick up that drivel?”
“Some silly bint working at Sundries. Gods, don’t get me started on her either.”
Astarion huffed a small laugh, looking away from her.
Maeve lifted the lid off her teapot, making a small noise of disappointment when she saw it was empty. Astarion slid his over without a word.
“You’re sure?” she asked.
“You’ll enjoy it far more than I will.”
Maeve poured herself a cup, took a sip, and made a face.
“And you expected me to like that one?” Astarion teased.
“Been in there too long, it’s turned bitter now,” she said, and glanced up at the clock. “... d’ya want to try something else? On me.”
“How could I turn down such a tempting offer?” he asked, leaning forward to place his chin on his hands.
“This time I am gonna make you choose something though,” she said, leaning across the counter towards him. “Sweet or spicy?”
“Well, I do like spicy food,” he said conspiratorially.
“I thought you might.”
Maeve prepared a single pot and set it on the counter between them.
“This one,” she said, holding out the open jar of tea to him, “is a divisive one. Technically a tisane, because it contains no tea leaves - but try telling the average punter that. Dark chocolate, chilli, and dates are what you’ll be smelling there.”
Astarion took a deep inhale of the scent, pulling a face that at least tried to appear receptive.
“Well it certainly sounds interesting if nothing else,” he said, and slid his cup over.
“That it is,” she said, making no move to pour. “And it needs a few minutes to really develop those flavours. So while we wait… Tell me, Astarion, what brings you in tonight? I suspect it’s not tea.”
“Well, Maeve . You remember Gale.”
“The wizard you been coming here with?” she asked, leaning against the counter towards him.
“The very same. He was terribly busy and insisted I come down so you wouldn’t forget about us. Something about maintaining our ‘customer loyalty’… Honestly I stopped listening after that. But… I suppose there are worse ways to spend an evening.”
“I suppose there are,” she said, letting a wry smile settle on her face. “And he doesn’t need to worry. Hard to forget someone who drinks coffee strong enough to kill me nan… Or a face like yours.”
Astarion huffed a small laugh, shaking his head. “Does that one usually work for you?”
“More often than not,” she admitted, laughing as well. “Probably not as well as it does for you.”
He fixed her with a stare, his face unreadable. “You are perceptive, aren’t you?”
“My stock-in-trade.”
He held her eye for a long moment.
“Interesting.”
Maeve scoffed. “Ah, I’ve been called worse I suppose.”
Guessing that enough time had likely passed, she poured out a cup for each of them, and took a drink, enjoying the slight tingle of the chilli. He watched her the whole time, without reaching for his own.
“Go on then, it’s perfectly safe now.”
He took a sip, and this time he tilted his head and raised his eyebrows.
“That one’s not bad, actually.”
“Aha!” Maeve exclaimed, slapping the counter. “We’re making progress! I’ll mark that one down in the maybe column.”
“You’re keeping score,” he said, levelling a playful look at her.
“Can you blame me? You’re a repeat customer even though I’ve not served you a single thing you’ve more than tolerated. How could I pass up an invitation like that? I will find something that you like,” she said, stabbing a finger down on the counter in emphasis.
“So you like a challenge, then?”
“It’s not even necessarily liking them … I just cannot abstain from them, no matter how hard I try.”
“I imagine that gets you into a fair bit of trouble.”
“You’ve no idea.”
“I may have some.”
Maeve narrowed her eyes, thoughts briefly flitting back to that flash of white she saw…
“Do you now? Surely not with the company you keep. How much trouble can you really get into when you’re with a wizard all the time?”
“He’d surprise you,” Astarion chuckled. “But I don’t spend all my waking hours with him. I still have time for… trouble .”
“And what kind of trouble is that?” Maeve asked, dropping her voice lower and leaning in towards him.
“Well,” he said, mirroring her actions, “there’s the usual excesses; drinking… debauchery… sex.”
He enunciated the last word clearly, staring into her eyes as he brushed a lock of hair behind her ear, his fingers trailing along the edge of her jaw.
Maeve held his stare, unwilling to give him the satisfaction of an outward reaction, despite the momentary stutter of her heartbeat. He was clearly a practised hand at making people shiver.
“Does that one usually work for you?”
Astarion dipped his head, his shoulders shaking slightly as he stifled a laugh.
“It does, actually,” he said, looking back up at her. “And frankly, that gets rather boring. I quite like a challenge myself, as it turns out.”
“Well, Astarion, if you’ll indulge me in mine…” she trailed off, gesturing between them in invitation.
“Of course, Maeve. So what trouble are you getting yourself into, hmm?”
“Oh, nothing special. Burglary, larceny, affray.”
Astarion nodded his head seriously. He was hearing sarcasm that wasn’t there, just as she’d hoped.
Maeve glanced up at the clock again, and stood up straight - she should have closed up about ten minutes ago.
“Alright, I should probably lock up now. Unless you’d like to finish that?” she asked, nodding towards his abandoned cup.
“No no, don’t let me monopolise your time any further,” he said, rising to his feet and letting her lead him to the entrance. “Will you be alright getting home? There are some dangerous people lurking around the Gate, especially at this time of night.” His hand came up, as if to examine the bruise on her face, but then he seemed to think better of it.
“I’ll be quite alright, thank you dear,” she said, lingering at the open door, waiting. “Goodnight, Astarion.”
“Goodnight Maeve.”
He started away, and she locked the door behind him. She lent back on the closed door for a moment, quickly replaying the evening in her mind.
He’d certainly lived up to the little spark of interest that ignited when she first saw him.
Maeve strode back over to the counter, throwing her apron at it and necking the leftover tea, before tidying everything away and heading upstairs to her apartment.

Best memory? ummmm when I got my dog, I was 4 and the lil man has been with me ever since.
Beach or ocean? I love the idea of the ocean but I am absolutely terrified of it, I am also not a fan of just being on the beach, too much sand everywhere.
Salty or sweet? omg sweet all the way, your girl won't survive without chocolate.
Emily prentiss or alex Blake? Why would you make me make this choice. I'm going with Alex because I am writing a family fic and I LOVE HER there.
Emily or Melissa? ffs katt WHY. ummmmm, Emily? just so you know, making this choice hurt.
Fave vape flavour? NOW WE'RE TALKING! my current faves are fresh menthol mojito and cherry ice, but only crystals, I shall not come anywhere near an elf bar. (currently suffering because crystals are not available here and I'm surviving off of elux)

potions and poisons 1.
Fire Elf Wine, somehow i want this to poison rich people. like suger in ur diet will react with this to cause goat or vomiting, richness of diet, maybe processed food? magical gmos? the great citys and nobles would be eating from magicaly enhanced gardens so thats what the fire wine interacts with, con fail = vomit, but over 10 they get 10 temp hp, disAdv on all saves, and will fly into a DM guided rage if annoyed. until long rest it away.
iron wine, from a mining/ distilary in the cliff side of the moors. an Emonian clan distil this glorius brew. taste of blood and mild flavoured berrys, but the main flavour is pure, stinging alchohol. It gives advantage on con saves if u make the initial DC10 to hold onto it. and raises ur AC by 1, and any fleight/ jump/ vehical motion or asuch will prone, paralyze and make u through up.
Absinthe-ay Chromatamagoria
brewed in Ard Carmen, it changes flavour based on ur latitude, like a note block. so bars have a weird placement of people, talking to friends through spells, who ae across the bar enjoying a different flavour. And can be found with a bunch of reveling wizards, in a feild, because they found a perfect latitiude for a crazy cool elemental flavour.
Bog Brandy, hags make it. goblins, orcs and ogars go berserk. Rage effect and if they drink 3 without vomiting DC 15 (1 try/Lrest), they upgrade to the bigger goblinoid, 1/year. Hob Goblins, become violent aggressive and naked drunks. others who survive DC15, still think its awful but get the affect of a 5 uses primal savagry cantrip.
'Flower of the Felwood' dc15 it marks u as a demon, u understand abyssal, feel demonic presence within 30f, and it tastes like mint, then just cold, then it feels sooo cold it burns the throught.
Mermaids' spite. it makes u very forgetful right now, short term/ this day, keep remembering the thing that angered u most and u get furious about it, ranting and fighting anyone who argues with them. but after falling asleep AFTER 6 hours active (keep them awake til) they will fall asleep and on waking wont remember the thing that they are angrey about, and will have a very spoty, often dream-like memory of the day they were drunk.
poison of tears. 6 poison damage, and they cry snot and droll like crazy for an hour. extreme dehydration and exhaustion if they dont find water within the next hour.
poison of night. 6 dmg, and if fail DC 10 con sv, they are blinded for ten turns/ 1 min.
snake poison. no dmg, if they fail dc10, they beacome paralyzed for 2 rounds/ 10 seconds
charming poison. They act like theyre very attracted to the first thing they see after shaking their head (dc10, Cha sv). maybe they grow shy of a tree and move away ignoring the battle around. or they love an enemy and just propose right there. or silently defend them, or chat em up while still fighting (non lethal). those who dont feel attraction, naturally or by circumstance arnt afected, they just shiver wildly.
bee venom. looses concentration dc10 Con, bees hate those who are hit, and all insects are attracted to attack them.
Brinacle Bath Water. DC 20, or loose movement, next turn dc15 or loose movement that turn, next turn dc10 or loose it again. if they fail all three, then at the end of that third turn the poisoned will freeze. anyone with fire relations. sorceres with fire spells, fire elves, natural fire spells, fire related patron or farmilier.
exuberance. from the city of love, it makes u extremely excited, excitable. ur beaming smiling, everything u say comes of in good humour and happy. people assume ur having the best day ever, that ur a genuinely happy person, and a fun person to be around. HIGHLY illeagal outside of the city, Lady Love knows its become an addiction, and cant moniter people outside teh city, so has her followers smash or spill smuggled ones over her shrines in sacrifice.
potion of wish. u honestly believe ur wish came true. they character then hallucinates (with narration to no body in particular) their wish coming true.
moon light collected for a month. as a potion it keeps ur illusions up under scrutiny. as a poison/ splashed, it melts illusion like they were fire, it flickers and wobbles.
potion of storms, it randomly blinks u out of existance, and u manifest somewhere random within 30f. every time, a massive thunder clap sounds from both places, but people cant triangulate it with the loadness and echos. Lightning strikes if u outside, not harming u but often dealing 2d6 to others. this may release a storm elemental if ur in a place of nature energy.
potion of... fish? immortal fish that, might be a potion? if they talk, it says 'just keep swimming', if they swollow it, they become a were-fish (60f darkvision with weird eyes - webbed didgets/double spd in water - claws do four dmg - gills can breath water - u need hydration quick rub on ur skin, every 3 hours or exhaustion). the affect is perm but 3 days without water or 24 hours in heated sand will force a reversion to natural form.
Warping Walker potion. gravity affects u differently when u turn ur head, u can walk onto a wall or ceiling, and that becomes ur 'down' in terms of gravity, u also jump 10f forward, 6f up. be aware stepping off a roof will send u straight up...
mind crack. DC (must be embarrassed) u start hearing peoples thoughts, beside u, around u, people u know, love/hate. its not mind reading its random daily thoughts totally mundane, espetially goofy thoughts and then they are all taken over by shouted catch phrases, funny quotes from ur party, then an animals mind is locked on eg Mmm grass, good grass, milk me. soon soon. milk soon. Then the perosn will start acting like that animal. they know therir friends, more afectionate now prob, they know their enemies, much more lickly to attack (in the fashion of their animal) but cant use wepons or magics. can use abilities.
