Hi! How possible is classical ballet for tall girls like 5'10?? i know pas de deux is a no no, and ballet companies wont take us, but i like to dance on my own. what are the challenges for freakishly tall people like me who wanna do classical variations? how will it affect our turning/extensions? thank you!

Hello! Classical ballet, at the highest level, is absolutely possible. However, ballet is more difficult for people, simply because of physics. Tall people with long limbs are often naturally flexible but can struggle with lack of control of their limbs. Consistent extra core work can help, and practice fast grand battement, keeping your leg 'close' to you and connected in your hip socket. Don't let your legs get away from you, this is when things really go wrong. Lots of grand battement is also great for building strength for extensions and grand allegro too! Your legs are long and beautiful, but you need muscles to control and 'throw' them!

Often, tall dancers tend to be slower, this is logical, longer limbs take longer to move. While you can't change your limb length, you can work on your coordination speed. Tall girls often struggle with turning because they are slow to get their arms and legs into the turning pose. Practice changing just your arms from first to second position and second to third quickly, without adjusting anything in your ribs or back. You need that stability!!

Pas de deux is absolutely possible, but you need a strong, capable guy to support your long limbs. Especially in schools when boys are still developing strength, it can be hard to find a good partner who can lift you. But don't lose hope, par terre partnering is possible with any guy who has decent hands. Work on your placement, you should be able to do the adagio combos as 'unsupported' as possible. Adagio with taller girls is harder for the guy, help them out as much as you can!

It is true that it is harder for tall girls to get a job, but this is more due to the lack of tall boys (competitions favor shorter boys with crazy tricks) than a dislike of the tall girl aesthetic. But don't lose hope! There are a lot of prominent dancers at big companies who are tall and absolutely fabulous.

If you want some tall girls to check out: Elena Vostrotina, Maria Kowroski, Ulyana Lopatkina, Alyona Kovaleva, Ekaterina Kondaurova, Teresa Reichlen, the up and coming Kaeli Ware who has the most fabulous pirouettes I've seen from someone at 5'11"

Today (September 9), Vaganova Ballet Academy professor Ludmila Safronova would have been 90 years old. To mark the occasion, Vaganova Ballet Academy has shared some photos of Safronova from their archives.

Safronova studied under Agrippina Vaganova herself, graduating in 1947, and spent twenty years dancing with the Mikhailovsky Theatre.

Safronova started teaching classical dance at VBA in 1975, and was actively involved with the Academy till her death in 2018. Her students include Elena Pankova, Marina Chirikova, Irma Nioradzem Elena Vostrotina, Alina Somova, Marina Pavlova and Yulia Stepanova.
