See YouTube video 10/1/17 of Janet Kuypers singing her song "Victim" as an industrial song with John on electric guitar (and added percussions), then her reading her poem "Your Imaginary Soul Weighs 21 Grams" from the cc&d 10/17 book "Forbidden" before contributors Thom Woodruff read his poem "A Billionaire is Offering Millions" and Joe Brundidge (Element615) read his poem "Route 803" from that book, at the Kick Butt Coffee open mic "Spoken and Heard" in Austin (video from a Sony camera).

this weekend
This whole week I've been feeling off. I have some theories about why, but I'd rather talk about what turned things around.
Friday night I was lucky enough to open for one of my favorite poets and people, Joe B aka Element615 at his Homecoming show after his 34 state tour. So glad he is back in Austin. I don't think I realized how much I love Joe B until he did this poem for his daughter called "Applesauce". I think it is the kind of poem my father would write for me if he could. During my set, I felt off, and I had to go outside and collect myself before returning to see the rest of the openers. But after Joe B hit stage, I felt more centered.
I left the show with my BNV teammates and friends Olivia and Charles still feeling a little strange but hoping tomorrow would be better. Yesterday was the monthly Austin youth slam. I took the bus and got there at 3 in time for the writing workshop, which ended up being hilarious and necessary. There weren't enough poets to slam, so we held an open mic instead. After the open mic, Charles and I walked into the rain heading for our bus stops but Cousin Sarah (one of the organizers) offered to drive us back to our dorms. While in the car, Sarah invited us to our coach Christopher Michael's surprise birthday party that evening, and we ended up en route to HEB to buy gifts and supplies for the party.
I can't remember the last birthday party I went to. I was so excited! We had to figure out a gift idea quick though. Charles and I decided to make homemade cards. We bought construction paper, two Sharpies, and glitter. We also decided to buy Christopher Michael a bottle of Flintstone sour gummy vitamins (he turned 40 and we were concerned about his need for vitamins.)
Tumblr media
Christopher Michael's hosting at slams usually includes a Haiku Interlude so I wrote him five birthday haikus:
The party was so much fun. All of Killeen Poetry Slam was there and they were hilarious to listen to. Charles and I got food and snooped around the house looking for interesting things. We found some playing cards and had a good few matches of ERS. There was a pinata filled with chocolate, a Doctor Who cake (because Coach is the biggest nerd on the planet), a great game of Apples to Apples (which I won), and fun between Charles and I trying to decide which adults were drunk yet. Christopher Michael loved the cards we made and turns out, he eats Flintstone gummies every day. Whaddya know. Oh! And when I got home last night, I got a text from my RA asking if I was going the Mos Def concert in Austin on the 30th. I tried to buy tickets Friday but the ticket website said they were off sale. NOT ANYMORE. So now I get to see my favorite rapper later this month (and I have a ride there!). And I have leftover red velvet cupcakes for the whole week. WHAT WHAT. The universe got my back yall.
