oh boy it's my hour. here's a random assortment of shit I've liked this year.
THE ADVISORY CIRCLE. loved them at the beginning of the year but their newest release has been on constant dog-walking and bus-riding rotation lately. it's: eerie but warm moog/synth/ambient with that specific 70s BBC vibe where it makes you feel close to nature and also the texture of cities.
on a similar note, also from my new favourite label Ghost Box Records, have a go at BROADCAST AND THE FOCUS GROUP INVESTIGATE WITCH CULTS OF THE RADIO AGE, an album which sounds, for once, exactly like it says on the tin. weird, flickering like a damaged film reel, yet once again: somehow warm. this has become one of The albums of all time for me. (see also, The Focus Group's The Elektrik Karousel, a colder, grainier affair -- and all of the Ghost Box depths, which I am still plumbing.)
for something completely different, Scottish singer-songwriter RACHEL SERMANNI's album Under Mountains is another all-time favourite. there's something just barely witchy about her lyrics and production, heady and enticing.
POiSON GiRL FRiEND. discovered this artist by complete accident and I can't stop playing her 1992 EP MELTING MOMENT. just delightful, shimmery, exquisitely 90s Japanese/French techno/house/dream pop.
GOTH LIPSTICK. I got really into their glittery, infectious EP crystalline corset last year, but new album I paint you, I paint you, I paint you is more meditative and haunting and tender, like a tipsy night-drive in the passenger seat at 3am.
THE MT FUJI DOOMJAZZ CORPORATION. discovered them while flipping through secondhand vinyl at one of the weirder record stores in town (did not buy the vinyl as it was very expensive but did write down the name, for obvious reasons). they are, in fact, doomjazz. lugubrious, grinding, echoing, murky like a leaf-choked fountain, an atmospheric stunner. feels like the score to a world two tics removed from this one and listening to it sparked a post-apocalyptic neo-noir book with witchcraft idea, just by vibes alone, so like.
YIKII. unsettling meandering nursery rhyme piano and vocals, waves of static and wrongness and glitch and crushing tidal waves of sound. obsessed with this. she's everything I've ever wanted.
CINDY LEE. Cindy Lee is kind of like if you kicked a Nancy Sinatra record down the cellar stairs and then you woke up in the middle of the night to find it looming over you, smiling, weeping like a saint's icon, with a knife.
anyway. there's always more but I've got to stop somewhere. HAVE FUN KIDS.
Please please please reblog this and put in the tags your music recommendations. I’m not talking about big artists and bands either— what’s a niche group, band, or artist that you can’t get enough of? What song or album do you enjoy the most? Why?
