Resin Printer Addition!
02/29/2024 Happy Leap Day! In the coming days, you will see some new models coming to the channel. I have ordered an Elegoo Mars 3 MSLA 4K printer along with the Elegoo Mercury Plus 2-in-1 Wash/Cure station. I will still be using my Ender 3 Pro A LOT for all of the supportless miniatures that I love to print from Brite Minis and Fat Dragon Games. This printer will be used just for ‘complex’…

Well I ended up getting a resin printer, Elegoo Mars 2 Pro and the Mercury washing station. Such insane detail on this thing and leagues ahead of Filament. I cant wait to print off much more stuff with it.

Another ring printed with Elegoo Mars Resin Printer
Since a few month, I own an Elegoo Mars Resin printer. It has UV LCD screen for “printing” each layer. In addition, I have an Elegoo Mercury Wash & Cure machine for a few weeks. These machines are incredibly affordable, they work and have a high resolution. The print space is rather small (120 (L) x 68 x 155 (H) mm). I will print a ring for the BI2 board and a vibration motor. Resin printing is a…

Is 3D Printing as good as I think it’s going to be?
After recently getting in to the old HeroQuest game with a couple of friends, I ended up getting back into the painting of the miniatures, then to make the games more interesting I started picking up some miniatures off ETSY. The more I looked on there, the more I wanted to be able to do it myself. I spoke to a couple of sellers on there, and they pointed me in the right direction.
So I spent some time, working my way through the minefield of “which is better,?how do you do it? What do I need?”.
I narrowed it down to two companies. Elegoo and Anycubic. Not knowing where to begin I emailed them both with a few questions. I knew I wanted an ‘entry level’ resin printer, didn’t want it to be a cheap and cheerful, so it’d be rubbish, at the same time I didn’t want to spend too much for something that wasn’t going to be as good as I thought it would be. So I’m a perfect customer for these two companies. I want to spend money with you... help me decide how much money I spend.
Elegoo were fantastic in their response. Someone went through what my options were, where to start, what they recommend I would need. Pointed me in the direction of some great resources and videos on how to get started. Where as Anycubic couldn’t even be bothered to respond to my emails and messages.... bit rude.
What they recommended to get started was the Elegoo Saturn 4K Mono LCD Printer and the Mercury X Bundle Wash and Cure Station. You can get them together for about $469 (that’s about £386 in the Queens Kings currency) plus a bit of resin.
Let’s start with the Elegoo Saturn. It comes mostly built already. All you need to do is put the “build plate” on, then follow the instructions to level the plate, tighten up a couple of screw. Fill up the resin vat with Resin. Then put in the USB drive that comes with it. Select Print. Select the test print object and wait a couple of hours and it’s done.
Generally after anything is printed, take off the build plate, (Carl’s Tip: I always GENTLY move the plastic scraper over the resin vat, to make sure nothing has stuck to the ‘FEP’ (plastic sheet that sits at the bottom of the VAT) to know whether I have to drain the resin through a filter back in it’s bottle, clean the resin vat and top it up again), put the plate on an old tea-towel and kitchen paper, use the plastic scraper to gently pop off the prints from the plate. Give the Plate a wipe down, put it back on, top up the resin, and move on to your next print.
Those Miniatures aren’t ready yet, we need to clean and take of the supports before curing them (harden them up). First we need to get to the excess resin off the prints. We need the Elegoo Mercury Wash Station.
Fill it up with a load of Isopropyl / Isopropanol (I don’t know why it has two names) basically it’s 99% Alcohol. I wish I had this in the 90s as it’s great for stripping acrylic paint of over-painted miniatures !!
I generally used about 2½ litres of it in the bucket... (Careful... this stuff is very very flammable.. as I found out... like super... almost burn’t the kitchen down.. flammable).
Pop your miniatures in to the basket and into the solution. Pop the lid back on. Let it run for 4 minutes. Take them out. They are reading for curing.
Another Carl’s Tip, I can’t recommend this enough, this one will help you out a lot. Boil the kettle. put some (deep enough to submerge your prints) a washing-up bowel (probably best if you don’t use the one you do dishes in) then put your freshly ‘washed’ miniatures into the bowl. This makes the resin, especially the ‘supports’ a lot softer. Then you should be able to carefully remove the miniature off their supports a lot easier. Remember the figure isn’t ‘cured’ / set yet - although they will be hard, just go careful. But this way you don’t have to sit there with ‘snippers’ cutting through supports to remove the model.
Also it’s great, if like me, your wash station is in desperate need of emptying and fresh Isopropyl filling up again, it gives the prints a second wash removing the dirty resin. Just remember after you have removed the supports - put them on some paper towel to carefully dry them.
Then it’s time to ‘cure’ / set the miniatures. This is the Elegoo Mercury Curing station.
Pop your freshly printed and cleaned (and removed of supports) into the Cure station - for small (Warhammer size miniatures) I generally put them in for about 4½ minutes - then once done they are ready.
I am pleasantly surprised at how easy the printing process from start to finish is.
I’m also (sadly) not sponsored by Elegoo - this was just my experience using what I brought (I’d love to be one of these people that get sent free stuff by manufacturers). I also never intended for this post to turn into a “Hows To” on 3D Printing for beginners.
The great thing as well, is there are so many fantastic and talented people out there who design their own miniatures that you can buy the digital files for (there are a lot of free ones out there too) on websites like MyMiniFactory.com and Cults3d.com. You can also subscribe to someone of them, and you’ll get a load of miniatures each month. The likes of STL Miniatures, Great Grimoire and Daybreak Miniatures are some of my favorite for awesome fantasy style miniatures.
The Elegoo prints use a software called Chitubox which again, makes things very simple. Load your 3D file up. Add on Supports. Save to USB. Move on to the next one.
However. It does become addictive. I am printing out more figures than I can paint. The great thing is, you can load of a build plate full of mini’s and leave it to printing for a few hours and then when it’s done move on to the next.
The next thing I would love to get in to is learning how to create my own miniatures.
If anyone has any questions (if anyone even reads this blog?) about starting off into 3D Printing and don’t know what where and how, drop me a message.

With an ever-growing list of large-format 3D resin printers, post-processing machines need to size-up too. The Phrozen Cure Luna is the largest consumer-priced curing station on the market. The question is if you're after an even quicker UV post-cure, is the Cure Luna worth your investment?
youtube
Phrozen Cure Luna Design
As a co-release alongside the Sonic Mighty 4K, the Phrozen Cure Luna shares a very similar aesthetic. With an all-around size of 11 x 11 x 14.75 inches (28 x 28 x 40 cm), the Luna falls just an inch or two shy of the Mighty's height.
Unlike previous Phrozen Cure iterations, the Cure Luna has ditched the fully enclosed cabinet-style design. Instead, the Cure Luna utilizes the more budget-friendly UV cover. Other curing options such as Elegoo's Mercury series have adapted similarly, so Phrozen's choice here doesn't come as a surprise.
For those already used to the Phrozen Cure line, the Cure Luna uses their standard front panel controls. As Phrozen products opt for user-friendliness, each button comes color-coded by functionality.
Phrozen Cure Luna Specifications and Safety
Machine Size: 11 x 11 x 14.75 inches (28 x 28 x 40 cm)
Weight: 11lbs (5 kg)
Inside Capacity: 8.66 x 8.66 x 10.63 inches (22 x 22 x 27 cm)
UV Light Intensity: 405 nm
Time Range: 1-120 min
Power Input: 100-240V, 50-60Hz
When looking at the Phrozen Cure Luna, it's all about its size and chamber capacity.
The UV LED light output of 405 nanometers provides for a smooth, even cure. However, they also serve as your largest safety risk. Thankfully, Phrozen included some safety measures.
To prevent any accidental activation, all four corners of the UV cover must be securely fitted or the Cure Luna won't start. Similarly, if you've removed your print and have set the lid to the side, you can't turn off the unit via the power button either. If you attempt to hold it down, you'll just get a warning beep indicating that it can't be completed.
Using the Largest Consumer Curing Machine
In practice, using the Cure Luna boils down to placing your print, setting a timer, and coming back to your evenly cured prints.
The pink power button functions simply. You have to hold it down to power the Cure Luna on or off. If you press it once, you can either start or pause the curing process if the lid is in place.
With this said, there are a few items to note about the control panel's timer. The S button works in presets. By tapping it you can jump between 5, 10, and 20-minute intervals.
The M button allows you to choose your time manually. It starts at one minute by default, but you can raise it to 120 minutes. The yellow directional arrow at a press will go up or down by one; if you continue to press and hold it'll go up in intervals of ten.
During operation, you'll hear some motorized noise as the rotating platform operates. While it's easier to notice if you're near, its audibility drops off significantly at a distance.
Once the timer drops below a minute, it'll swap to a countdown in seconds. Upon completion, the Cure Luna will alert you with a loud chime. If the Luna is left idle, it'll turn off after a short period to save power.
Is the Phrozen Cure Luna All You Need?
When I received the Cure Luna for testing, it arrived during a period of weeks where sunlight was a commodity. Overcast skies and near-constant rain made a natural cure by sunlight unrealistic. In these conditions, the Cure Luna kept a steady stream of prints going.
As for the Cure Luna's promise of evenly cured models regardless of size, it delivers. After properly cleaning and prepping prints before placing them in the Cure Luna's chambers, it provided all-around even cures on all my models. If some resin does drip on the rotating platform (i.e. from a hollowed-out portion of the model), IPA and paper towels do a good job removing it.
The Pros and Cons of Alternative Post-Processing Machines
While easy to use, the nuance here is the overall value of the Luna depends on what size you're printing at and how much you're printing. After removing and cleaning a full build plate of prints, the ability to cure them all in one go kept the print schedule flexible. Similarly, having the option to place a large vertical print and cure it in minutes proved an immense time saver.
For those interested in printing the models used for testing, you can view Bestiarum Miniatures' work at their Patreon or MyMiniFactory.
If you're printing smaller and fewer prints, you have more options. Two-in-one washing and curing machines cover a range of common resin 3D printer models on the market. Many of these work in cross-platform capacity to some degree, and they can reduce your exposure to the resin.
For those that want to control your cleaning process more, there are other cure-only machines on the market. However, there's a trade-down in size unless you're willing to pay for a pricier alternative such as the Phrozen Cure XL.
Still, your ultimate decision will boil down to personal workflow choice. If you're thinking about working bigger, the Cure Luna will save you from having to size-up soon.
Pricing and Repairability
The Phrozen Cure Luna comes in at $250. Bear in mind that you'll have to pay tariff and shipping costs on top of this. However, Phrozen's original Phrozen Cure sells for $305 when not on sale, and its inner capacity is significantly smaller.
While the Cure Luna offers more size at a cheaper cost than its consumer-based predecessor, your print sizes need to be worth the cost. If your prints are small enough, you can potentially create a DIY cure box or use a UV curing lamp over your prints. The Cure Luna is a convenient option if it fits your budget and printing process.
Beyond the price, the Phrozen store doesn't specialize in parts for their Cure line. Unlike standard UV lamps, UV LEDs have a longer operating life of somewhere above 40,000 operating hours. As such, these are designed with several years of life in mind.
While it's unlikely the timer or rotating platform would give you issues, the Cure Luna is covered under Phrozen's one-year warranty.
Should You Buy the Phrozen Cure Luna?
If you're ready to invest in large-format resin printing, the Phrozen Cure Luna is a great post-processing accessory. As curing units aren't bound to a particular printer, you can cure all of your models regardless of their size and origin. Still, the price may leave some wanting to size-down or try a DIY option.
If you're dabbling in 3D printing, you'll want to explore options that suit your print frequency. However, if you're after convenience and want to maximize your time efficiency, consider the Phrozen Cure Luna.

I was going to get the Saturn, it was the one I pre-ordered for $500, but cancelled because of all the QC issues.
The Saturn has roughly 210% the X by Y print size (it can go a little higher in the Z direction, but not much).
The Mars goes on sale from time to time (I have see it as low as $190), but the Pro model has built in Carbon filtration (which the Saturn lacked) that is apparently pretty good. It also features a z-rail which adds more stability to the print bed. (I have seen the Pro model as low as $250). They also recently introduced the Mars 2, but I don't really know what it adds.
While Elegoo was manufacturing the Saturn, they soft-announced the Jupiter, which is about 2 times the physical size of the Saturn.
I don't think they have released the print dimensions or price of the Jupiter yet though.
I'm hoping that eventually the Saturn will have it's kinks worked out, will come to retail (it was supposed to go to retail last month), and subsequently (because of economies of scale) go down in price.
Elegoo's Instagram page looks like it has been rebooted and is now private? I was going to screen grab the Jupiter because I don't think I saved the photo... 🤷
This is from their Twitter.
The yellow topped machine is their Mercury Wash & Cure Station which is roughly the size of the Mars for comparison.
I'm sorry if this is too much info lol I did a tonnnnn of research when I was planning on getting a 3D printer.
@beetleboo has a Mars. 👍
Photon is $500 and the Elegoo Mars is $250 and they seem to have similar print bed size and print quality.
