And of course he did in the past- Atsushi Nakajima. While the man had speculations, he didn’t go out of his way to FIND his son or the boy’s mother, he was more focused, as a man of science, on his work than anything else. But if he did run across Atsushi, Shibusawa would probably torture him with or without the knowledge he's his son, with a quirk like his- how can he not see how that works? And how can he not have it in his possession? He’d do WHATEVER to get it in his claws even if it meant ripping it from his own flesh and blood.

Takeaways from reflecting on your kick-ass writing, or kick-ass lack of writing, during a year more focused on survival than perhaps any other: words are so hard, y’all. I would love to know what the secret is to unlocking brainword energy on a regular basis. Seven of the Terror works I turned out this year were written in the space of a fortnight, and the rest have come like pulling teeth, which is my usual writing speed. I think a lot of it has to do with divesting myself of shame? I can’t write well or with any kind of speed when I’m second-guessing myself and worrying about what the reader will think of my work, and, by extension, of me. Trying to put that aside is what I’m working on, a little bit, every time I sit down to write.

Most surprising fic you wrote this year: the Daredevil demon fic, because I actually finished it probably my weird dark Phantom fic, which is… not my usual metier.

How you grew as a writer this year: moved all my problematic content off my shame sock and onto my main, as part of my ongoing effort to put aside shame. Wrote more in a year than I ever have before- I know 65k is nothing compared to what some people are turning out, but for me it’s an achievement.

Queere Theory: a deeper look at Jeremy Heere, by Sebastian Sabra Thomas

Anxious teenager. Main character. Chronic masturbator. All of these may be used to describe Jeremy Heere at quick glance, in and out of both canon and fanon alike. However, I believe no flippant descriptors can adequately describe his hidden potential lying just underneath the surface.

This is part 1 of a multi-part meta essay wherein I make my case for Jeremy Heere’s character. Links are added to text in [brackets]. This is my first meta, as well as my first essay since… shit, high school. Feedback is greatly appreciated.

For closing on a year now, I’ve been consuming from, and occasionally participating in, the Be More Chill fandom. Still rocky on its feet after the initial Boom of Summer 2017, but steadily gaining traction with the Off (and now On) Broadway performances, BMC is coming to terms with it’s own fanon identity as common characterizations grow more locked in by the day.

As the months go by and I fall deeper in love with this series, I’ve been slowly tracking down abandoned or underappreciated content in my usual stomping grounds (excessive angst and unpopular pairings), solidifying my own thoughts and opinions as a creator first and a fan second. In some ways, I’ve come to similar conclusions as the rest of the fandom. In others, I stand alone.

As I mentioned at the beginning, I’d like to try and make a case for what I’ve come to think of Jeremy, or Jeremiah, Heere, both for my own benefit and as an attempt to persuade others to my side for various, admittedly selfish (but c’mon, would I be writing this if it wasn’t?) reasons. I would deeply appreciate it if you’d come along on this metatextual journey with me to places far and wide inside Jeremy’s subconscious. Do you hear that? That’s the sound of Pure Imagination played over wet slapping noises and the occasional electrotorture flashback!

Anyway.

This essay will be broken down into 7 Parts (links to be added as they’re completed):

To start with, Characterization will be loosely split two ways: personality, and appearance. This will overlap with the other parts of course, but you should have a solid understanding of the foundation from which I carve details like ‘neurodivergency’ and ‘familial bonds’ from by the end of it. Jeremy Heere may look like an Enigma along a Fault line, but really, he’s a vulnerable kid who’s gone through some intense trauma--whether in canon, fanon, or my own funky concoction of both.

He’s also insanely pretty. Don’t worry, I’ll be reminding you of that a lot.

Mental Health covers MI Disorders like PTSD (which, yes, I do believe Jeremy has), and Neurodivergent behaviors like his autistic symptoms (I don’t generally consider him autistic, but it’s not a hard sell, and I’ll try to go over it either directly in the post or through a follow-up some other time). It’ll also be going over his traumas, both in canon and my headcanon. Heads up: I am mentally ill and neurodivergent, including professionally diagnosed PTSD, among other fun things. I have strong symptoms and trauma which, yeah, I sometimes see in Jeremy. I will be going over how these personal experiences color my perception.

Interpersonal relationships will discuss his friends and romantic prospects--as well as his se-xuality as a whole. From his identity as queer(e) and bise-xual, to his thoughts on being Achellian, to his kinks and latent polyamory and desired hook up habits. Also, all of his identities here reflect ones similar to mine, but with a few important distinctions.

(Speaking of Queerness, across all of these posts, as I feel it’s necessary, I’ll be making a point to talk about the differences between cis boy Jeremy, trans boy Jeremy, and brief thoughts on how I could see a trans femme narrative as well.)

I’ll be using the Family part as a follow up for, and a further exploration of, the specific trauma he’s sustained from his Mother and her abandonment, and how his dad (bless his heart) is 100% canonically neglectful. I truly believe Jeremy has all the hallmarks of an abused kid.

… The Squip will be an interesting topic. If you’re opposed to Squipemy, feel free to skip it, although I will try to segregate the shipping half from the platonic half.

Finally, for the Wrap Up post, I will be writing down my final conclusions and then going over fan content that inspires me and tweaks my perception in ways large and small. For example, I’m always consuming animatics in some form; one great artist is the famous [Cla Comics], who provides a good base for mannerisms and overt humor, though, by nature, her content is on the lighter end of the spectrum then what I’m usually wallowing in. Other artists, like [PINE TRE3] and [Torpedomyass], have both provided some nice angst, and fit right in line with my general taste in aesthetics. It’s not just those three either of course, and I’ll also be doing the same for fanfic, too.

there is no question to even the most untrained eye that this outdoor structure is of the highest possible concern. i worry that i may not have space to unpack the true horrors of this structure, and that if i do, the owner may track me down and lock me in it.

the grime beset within every inch of this structure can only be organic in nature; one can almost smell the blood, sweat, and fear that gave birth to the image seen before us. the suspicious stains on the concrete-filled lot indicate the presence of iron oxide, but it would be remiss to attribute this to rust. after all, haemoglobin rusts too.

this building has been constructed in a hurry, owing to the wonky and haphazard bricklaying, and thus has no legitimate purpose. builders tend to put more care into structures which they were not held at gunpoint and ordered to construct. of great and severe concern is that not only has one door, splattered with the blood of a murder by chainsaw, been kicked clean off its hinges - but a second door has required reinforcing.

i must also question the need for a solar panel in this structure. the windows, placed disturbingly high and small, would provide adequate lighting. i can only postulate that the solar power is for an elaborate off-the-grid electrotorture device.

if you need any more evidence that this structure is not an oubliette: that clothesline has not been used in decades. it is for hanging the severed heads of the occupants. 

rating:  5/5. honestly the most concerning structure i’ve ever seen in suburbia. listing price: $650,000 (seriously???)

Yes, they met. Amanda was the first female immortal introduced in the original series. She's Duncan's old flame and probably his most important romantic partner other than Tessa (his long term partner in the first couple seasons). They both have other serious relationships, but they get back together over and over, usually when Amanda steals Duncan's credit card.

Then apparent nerdy grad student and oldest living immortal (with a creepy dark past) Methos is introduced. And then there were some epic parts that had both Methos and Amanda. It's all very Moral Center + Chaos Gremlins.

It was! It's actually one of the classic ye olde slash fandoms of the 60s. Illya's actor set records for fanmail. It's just that the show didn't rerun as much, and the tonally different first season (on which the movie is largely based) especially didn't rerun so much compared to the three color seasons.

Fandom historians haven't paid nearly as much attention to it as to Star Trek. A lot of the fanfic type activity is more attested to from the 80s than the 60s, but some people think that's just due to poor preservation or lack of research.

In the show, Illya and Napoleon already work together out of U.N.C.L.E. headquarters in NYC. They're cordial coworkers, not meet cute enemies, which is rather interesting for a 60s show given that Illya is still a Soviet citizen. (There's a lot of meta about how American fic authors like to make him a defector, but the show implies that he's anything but.) Show!Illya is a lithe gymnast and scientist type with a dry sense of humor, not a secretly sensitive berserker.

It's still a reasonably active fandom (unlike the movie). There's a nice discord server I'm in, though I haven't checked it in ages.

Like many people, my favorite fic author is Cord Smithee, whose stuff can be found on the Chrome and Gunmetal Madhouse archive.

Somewhere back in the mists of my tumblr, I have some posts about which episodes the movie took its inspiration from. A lot of it is very first season, which was a bit darker. The electrotorture is from a fourth season episode where Illya is undercover as a villain and has to torture Napoleon though. (If you think all the fic is about this episode, you're exactly right!)

These are Haven and White Collar. I didn't watch either to the end and have no regrets about that, just saying. There's plenty of good fic though.

This is the venerable Highlander, baby's first OT3 for many a 90s slash fan.

The Book of Life and Singin' in the Rain.

This is the extremely underrated Man from U.N.C.L.E. film. It came out at the same time as Straight Outta Compton, alas.

Some oldschool show fans whined that it was nothing like the show, but they are wrongity wrong wrong and have forgotten season 1, particularly Marion Raven and Gervaise Ravel, upon whom the love interest and the villainess are based. (And yes, I absolutely ship show Illya/Napoleon/Marion.)

There was a nice little fic fandom for a year or two, but it withered in the absence of any sequels. The show is more of a m/m juggernaut with the very occasional foray into the main dudes having a one-off threesome with some lady. Show Illya is pretty iconic and very different from movie Illya though, so I understand that disappointment.

Sleuth of the Ming Dynasty and Mysterious Lotus Casebook. These are historical mystery and wuxia mystery respectively. The former has a more satisfying series end than the latter, but I liked both endings all right. (Look, with c-dramas, that's always my first question: Did everyone die and/or everything get left hanging in a way that will make me throw things?)

The Two Faces of January might as well be called Daddy Issues: The Movie and has allll kinds of badwrong vibes. It's not a happy story. I'm not sure Patricia Highsmith knew what happiness even looked like. But boy is it delicious! The scenery is gorgeous too.

And that last one is Les Spécialistes, a film I only discovered from a fan bitching about how it was the OT3iest thing ever but nobody remembered that it existed. It's a silly French heist movie from the 80s with some identity porn and twists.

Other people added Leverage, most notorious of OT3 fandoms, three of the side dudes from The Untamed, Arthurian legend, and Girl Genius.

I would deeply appreciate it if you’d come along on this metatextual journey with me to places far and wide inside Jeremy’s subconscious. Do you hear that? That’s the sound of Pure Imagination played over wet slapping noises and the occasional electrotorture flashback!

Anyway.

This essay will be broken down into 7 Parts (links to be added as they’re completed):

To start with, Characterization will be loosely split two ways: personality, and appearance. This will overlap with the other parts of course, but you should have a solid understanding of the foundation from which I carve details like ‘neurodivergency’ and ‘familial bonds’ from by the end of it. Jeremy Heere may look like an Enigma along a Fault line, but really, he’s a vulnerable kid who’s gone through some intense trauma--whether in canon, fanon, or my own funky concoction of both.

He’s also insanely pretty. Don’t worry, I’ll be reminding you of that a lot.

Mental Health covers MI Disorders like PTSD (which, yes, I do believe Jeremy has), and Neurodivergent behaviors like his autistic symptoms (I don’t generally consider him autistic, but it’s not a hard sell, and I’ll try to go over it either directly in the post or through a follow-up some other time). It’ll also be going over his traumas, both in canon and my headcanon. Heads up: I am mentally ill and neurodivergent, including professionally diagnosed PTSD, among other fun things. I have strong symptoms and trauma which, yeah, I sometimes see in Jeremy. I will be going over how these personal experiences color my perception.

Interpersonal relationships will discuss his friends and romantic prospects--as well as his sexuality as a whole. From his identity as queer(e) and bisexual, to his thoughts on being Achellian, to his kinks and latent polyamory and desired hook up habits. Also, all of his identities here reflect ones similar to mine, but with a few important distinctions.

(Speaking of Queerness, across all of these posts, as I feel it’s necessary, I’ll be making a point to talk about the differences between cis boy Jeremy, trans boy Jeremy, and brief thoughts on how I could see a trans femme narrative as well.)

I’ll be using the Family part as a follow up for, and a further exploration of, the specific trauma he’s sustained from his Mother and her abandonment, and how his dad (bless his heart) is 100% canonically neglectful. I truly believe Jeremy has all the hallmarks of an abused kid.

… The Squip will be an interesting topic. If you’re opposed to Squipemy, feel free to skip it, although I will try to segregate the shipping half from the platonic half.

Finally, for the Wrap Up post, I will be writing down my final conclusions and then going over fan content that inspires me and tweaks my perception in ways large and small. For example, I’m always consuming animatics in some form; one great artist is the famous [Cla Comics], who provides a good base for mannerisms and overt humor, though, by nature, her content is on the lighter end of the spectrum then what I’m usually wallowing in. Other artists, like [PINE TRE3] and [Torpedomyass], have both provided some nice angst, and fit right in line with my general taste in aesthetics. It’s not just those three either of course, and I’ll also be doing the same for fanfic, too.

Vancey is not only my best friend, they’re my longest running collaborator, my biggest fan, and my other muse. They also far surpass my writing, and Smoke Signals, a Rich Goranski origin story, is a fucking masterpiece.)

Okay, gushing about content aside, I do truly appreciate anyone who takes the time to read my rambling, and I hope to keep you both interested and engaged from start to finish. Past due for a Kazami Shiro Update (worried i'm getting desensitized to his antics)

Well for starters:

He did follow the pat on the shoulder up with "I'll keep watch for you" but th is still says a lot about Society and Kazami Shiro's Psychological Well-Being

Had this happen to his brain

This as well:

Brought his Chopping/Ripping A MotW's Arm/Hand Off count up to 5

The gang got a map handed over to them supposedly pointing toward important info about V3 and the moment they had the location pinpointed Kazaki set the map on fire

Spent like 5 on-screen minutes walking through a river, sluttily, while dying

Had a nightmare about all the people close to him dying because he couldn't save them (he is still Dying from the last bullet point) and then woke up to find a family has brought him to their house and hide him from Destron agents who tracked him to their home and I cannot emphasize enough how this is literally just EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED TO HIS OWN FAMILY and he has to just listen to this happen because they hid him in their cellar

sigh.

Has started saying The Thing

Got exploded by a time bomb in a Bible and the whole church blew up but he was pretty much fine

I can't bring myself to describe what happened with his sweat in the electrotorture scene . Infer For Yourself.

Gets tied up at both sets of limbs on an operating table so he gets his legs free first and grabs & tosses a monster with His Legs

One cyborg monster dismembered the other saying "this is what I'll do to you, V3!" and then immediately V3 grabbed him from behind and broke that monster's arm off (6) with thefirst one's dismembered ball & chain hand

Gets hit with a torpedo (he's fine after a minute)

Has by this point probably outpaced Known Short King Catboy Hayato Ichimonji in terms of Standing On Tall/High Up Stuff For No Real Reason

Got the first bug telepathy call from Riders 1 & 2 after they blew up but said they'd be fine and all it was was them telling V3 to get hard.

I am being serious.

(He did get hard fwiw)

Jumped off a bridge (in order to stop himself from stabbing himself (because Syringe-Spider got him with a mind-control virus)) into a river about 50 feet below and THREE SECONDS LATER V3 is doing his Threatening Laugh standing somewhere higher up than the bridge

Syringe-Spider demanded to know How The Fuck He Did That and all he does is explain how he isn't affected by the mind-control virus as V3. I don't think he understood that his movement here should be Physically Impossible.

AAAAAAUGGGGHH.

Got hit by Speargun-Sea Lion's speargun and it did Fucking Nothing To Him. Middle of a normal fight scene shot, poked right into him, grabbed it & pulled it out without missing a single beat.

Just gonna start compiling a list of some. Choice Kazami Shiro moments. Starring Kazami Shiro. Don't mind me.

Pretended to be unconscious in an ambulance on the chance that the ambulance called after the third attempt on his life was actually Also the guys trying to kill him

When it turned out that was indeed a fake ambulance full of fake paramedics and one was about to stab him with a syringe of poison, he got the jump on the guy, grabbed the needle, and threatened to stab him unless he talked

His family died in front of him and his almost immediate reaction was to ask his friend whom he Just learned is actually a karate bug man to turn him into a karate bug man in order to avenge his parents and sister

Punctuated his intent of the prior point with "I'm done with being human."

While everyone else focused on the cyborg that escaped through the manhole he was booking it after a single goon

Once he had that goon cornered he held him down by the throat and when the goon said he was crushing his neck Kazami's response was "Too bad, I don't know my own strength now! So start talking!"

Tried to get the only other survivor of the attack that got his family killed to stay away by responding to her promise of "I won't cause you any trouble" with "Yes you will."

A computer analyzing video footage of him begged to be put down before attempting to comprehend V3 caused its hardware to violently explode and catch on fire

In an unrelated event V3 caught on fire fighting a Squid Man and just casually somersaulted into the ocean to put it out

Got placed, unconscious, into a wooden coffin nailed shut, which was then doubly locked into in an incinerator. He then isn't in there when they open it all up with the only explanation being "the heat from being cremated alive spun his turbines enough to transform" (this does not explain how he got out)

Got shot by a Machinegun-Snake and tried to solve this by removing a bullet from his own leg in his barely-lit apartment using only a warm knife
