Conceived as an athenaeum for business scholars, the three-story, 68,000-square-foot structure takes inspiration from its Tampa Bay setting and the indigenous coral stone that lines its shore. Like the stone, the building is a porous container with openings carved out of its volume that house program and allow sunlight and landscaping to penetrate deep within.

One of these openings is the light-filled central commons and scholars’ garden that support casual learning and encourage productive collisions between students and faculty. The multi-story commons and scholar garden are spatially intermeshed and ringed with active programs spaces including a trading room, community room, break rooms and classrooms that connect the learner to their environment.

The most unique feature of the building is its glass façade that metaphorically recalls the openings in regional organic coquina or coral stone. To achieve the impression and depth of surface one would find in coquina, the design team created an inventive composition of flat glazing units.

These elements appear three dimensional, consisting of a ceramic fritted first pane that is double run with two tones of a circular pattern and a second, reflective one-way mirror glass pane that allows views out while reflecting the patterned ceramic coating of the first pane, resulting in a glass surface with a three-dimensional quality or a shadowed depth that belies its constructive flatness.

In addition, the glazing system is designed to resisted hurricane force winds and projectiles and reject the intensive Floridian heat gain. The building is LEED Gold certified.

Hollywood’s Art and Culture Center Expansion Moves Closer to Construction

Brooks + Scarpa’s long planned addition for the The Art and Culture Center Hollywood has finally been approved by the City to move forward towards construction. The new 5,400 square foot addition will bookend the existing center with an expanded Arts Education wing, containing state- of- the- art studios for performance, visual arts, digital media, and music. In addition to these studios, an expanded reception and shared lobby space open onto a new central courtyard, blending the historic structure with the new addition.

Project Description:

The Art and Culture Center/Hollywood is a cultural landmark in Hollywood, Florida, celebrated for being among the first to introduce contemporary arts to the surrounding community. The Art and Culture Center/Hollywood presents contemporary gallery exhibitions, live stage performances, and high- quality arts education programs for adults and children in its current facility housed in a historic Mediterranean Revival building.

The original two- story house on site, the ‘Kagey Mansion’, was built in 1924 at the height of the land boom in Hollywood, Florida as one of South Florida’s first showplace homes, completed a year before the City of Hollywood was incorporated. As the city grew around it, it remained a private residence until 1960, when it was expanded and converted to a funeral home, operating until 1989. The Art and Culture Center/Hollywood moved into the facility in 1992, fostering a creative environment where new and challenging work can flourish through programs that reflect the highest standards of artistry and diversity.

Now, a newly planned addition will bookend the existing center with an expanded Arts Education wing, containing state- of- the- art studios for performance, visual arts, digital media, and music. In addition to these studios, an expanded reception and shared lobby space open onto a new central courtyard, blending the historic structure with the new addition.

Sensitive to the history of the site, the original building is allowed to retain its visual presence with the new addition existing harmoniously, yet independently, from the historic structure. Drawing from the original facade’s arches and clay tile roof, a new blended architecture of balance between old and new is created.

Formally, a catenary arch is lifted onto itself, creating a sweeping roof structure of cross- laminated timber with a shared arcade below, complementing the dominant visual elements of the original building. Wrapped in a screen of copper anodized aluminum, the new form is given a rhythm as one moves past that allows it to come alive. This creates dancing patterns of light and shadow along one face of the building, while the front- facing studio exhibits dance along the other.

A building is a physical record of its time, place, and use. Too often the push to create a false sense of history has stripped away the beauty and lessons to be learned from the layering of different periods. Mindful of this, the Art and Culture Center/Hollywood aims to transform in order to truly preserve. In juxtaposing the historic and contemporary, visitors to the Center are allowed to make a direct comparison between past and present and view both of equal value instead of ranking one above the other.

The Art and Culture Center/Hollywood, in partnership with the City of Hollywood, is currently engaged in the development phase for the construction of a new arts education building next to the Kagey Home facility at 1650 Harrison Street in downtown Hollywood. Funded in part through the General Obligation Bond approved by Hollywood voters in 2019, the 5,400-square-foot education space is being designed to house classrooms for dance, music, visual arts and new media, and will include an outdoor courtyard.

More than just a building, it should be a civic place for social interaction, bringing people closer to art and each other, providing opportunities for new, immersive art experiences.

The arts education building will connect to the west side of the Kagey Home, creating a modern link to the two-story, circa-1924 Spanish Mediterranean facade of the Center’s contemporary galleries and administrative offices.

The facilities expansion will add:

• Dance/Drama Studio that can also host yoga, live performance, and artist talks • Visual Arts classroom equipped with sinks and cabinetry • Distance Learning broadcast and video/music recording capability • Music classroom with acoustic panels • Outdoor Courtyard/Art Garden • Lobby that connects to the Kagey facility

This is the first project in the City’s plan to modernize and increase capacity for arts programming at the 1.2-acre Art and Culture Center/Hollywood site. Future expansion on the east side of the Kagey Home will include construction of a new performing arts studio and the renovation of current gallery spaces.
