What a grooovvyyy looking car again! Our friend and columnist Laurent Dubois aka ElDub did it again and didn’t only put together a great nostalgia display about the Purple Cyclone Booster but also managed to build and brought out his new creation, the Cyclone Bug in the same style, colour and vision! Next to the EMPI display in the EBI Exhibition marquee it looked like everything fell together again! Pretty big update to the site today. For a long time the site has been built on a framework that is now defunct and unsupported. Five years ago when I started the site the notion of building sites for mobile was in it’s infancy, now it’s actually the standard to build mobile first and then scale up. If you’re interested have a look at the BBC site often the yard stick on building device friendly content.

Ramble, ramble. Since the start of the site we wanted to deliver written content. I started back down this road after numerous distractions and found that the content looked awful on the site (not just because of the bright red and yellow). If I was going to do mobile scaling I’d have to rebuild mobile first.

The site, though it doesn’t look it, has been refactored to work on a mobile first basis first and then scale up to other devices. I’ve mainly focused on mobiles and desktop, but tablet support should still work. Along the way I’ve dropped in a couple of new features for the site.

(Modern browsers tend to cache files so you might need to do CTRL+F5 to get the new juicy goodness)

Navigation

The old saying “build it and they will come” is a bit bollocks these days. I think that one of the problems with our site is we often leave users on pages with no exit strategy. I’ve mentioned before how on the anniversary of JTGs phonecall around 1000 people made it to the former countdown page and then immediately exited. I think a lot of people don’t know there’s other stuff on this site. The nav is really basic but I think it’ll suffice for the purpose of being able to get around more.

A very rough search has been added, mainly because I didn’t like the nav just starting at the top. The search currently looks for tags, images and board posts that mention phrases. I’m throwing this out to see how it gets used and breaks.

Notifications

More of a bug fix, but I’ve taken out the header dropper that was such a stupid design choice and added a separate page for notifications. You can access it from the top right user menu. I’ve finally fixed the issue where you can’t unmark notifications, it was dumb but you should now be able to get rid of those pesky notifications.

Profile images

Purely built out of the challenge of “can I make a thing in an evening”. The answer was no, it took two and a lot head scratching. But you can upload a crop down an image that’ll be used as your profile picture - it only shows on your profile for now, but I imagine it will be used elsewhere.

Error handling

Hopefully you’ll never see this screen but if you do, don’t panic! All errors are now being captured in handy dandy ways to make sure I can clean up messes and get notified when I accidentally take down the entire site with an update.

I think that’s everything. I’ve tried to be thorough as possible with this update but the likelihood is I’ve missed something and you’ll find it. If you do find something that looks odd drop a post on the /eldub/ board and I’ll have a look. Same goes if you have any feedback for the site.
