Heyo! This is for the October Fic Request Event. 🎃 If it’s okay, could you please write a small fic about Elder Princess Shroob and reader preparing a house or Shroob Castle for Halloween and seeing the little kids and little Shroobs go trick or treating.

Elder Princess Shroob x Reader - Dearest Subject

The Shroobs were an… interesting species. They had little common ground between their culture and the old Mushroom Kingdom’s, but they did end up adopting a holiday from them– Halloween.

In the dimly lit halls of the Shroob Castle, decorations hung with a sinister charm. Fake purple blood oozed from the cracks in the stone walls, while cobwebs, glistening with an otherworldly glow, were scattered about like forgotten memories. Although it has been only a few years since total take-over of the planet, nothing of the old Peach's castle remained.

Elder Princess Shroob, with her regal demeanor and sharp, crimson eyes, had taken a liking to this holiday despite it being entirely foreign to her species. She saw it as an opportunity to bring her people closer to one another in a way that only involved some silly costumes and decorations. 

You had put up most of the decor along with the help of some of the younger Shroobs. Everytime she passed you in the hall, you were busy placing things that were nearly out of your reach or putting together large figurines that stood up on their own. It was… interesting, to see you work so efficiently, with your strong arms working so hard… 

Sometimes she'd help you, but other times… she liked watching you work.

Though, by this point, you were done with decorating, spending time with her subjects and doing little arts and crafts projects. Carved pumpkins sat just about everywhere– she'd have to take extra care in not accidentally stepping on one due to how large her form is. Her younger sister has knocked a few over, but she made her put them back up neatly– or even redo them if the pumpkin was damaged enough–

A noise slightly startled Elder Princess Shroob, and she glanced over her shoulder to see you standing at the doorway of the throne room. 

You gave her a meek smile, adjusting your hold on the Shroob in your arms. Shroobs age differently than most of the species on this planet, but the Shroob in your arms would be the equivalent of a five year old human. "You seem very deep in thought," you said slowly and carefully, making sure she understood each word of your language. There was a mild language barrier– you didn't fully understand her home language, and she struggled to comprehend yours, but you and her made it work. Sort of.

She hummed, turning her gaze to stare back out the glassless window. "I WAS WATCHING MY SUBJECTS." Her voice was almost booming, bouncing off the walls loudly despite it being her regular speaking volume.

You walked over to stand beside her, idly petting the Shroob's head as he sleepily peered out the window too. "I'm surprised they grasped the concept of trick-or-treating at all. It certainly isn't the most straightforward concept out there."

^I wanna go trick-or-treating too,^ the Shroob mumbled in his home language. It took you a minute to understand what he had said.

"We'll go once things settle down a little out there." You gave him a light, affectionate squeeze, practically hugging him. "Okay?"

"Mmph… Okay…"

You smiled, looking up at Elder Princess Shroob. "And Bella will join us too, right?"

The name Bella was one that you came up with for her. It was quick, easy, and fit in with your language. It was nicer than saying her full title every time you were referring to her.

^I DON'T HAVE A COSTUME,^ she told you, not remembering your language's word for 'costume.' 

"Well, we don't need a…" You cleared your throat, straining your vocal cords to say– ^costume.^ You gave a wider smile. "But if you really want one, it isn't hard to come up with something."

She tilted her head slightly, considering the idea. Costumes were a staple of Halloween, but actually wearing one was foreign to her. She wasn’t even sure what costume she should wear… “YOU’RE… CERTAIN, IT’S ALRIGHT TO NOT WEAR ONE?”

You nodded, reassuring her; "Of course, Bella. Halloween is about having fun, and if you don’t want to wear one that's perfectly fine,” you explained slowly. “You can still enjoy Halloween without one.”

She seemed relieved by your response. "THANK YOU," she said, her voice carrying a touch of genuine gratitude.

You continued to stare out the window, watching the Shroobs buzz around with excitement, going from door to door. After a while you looked down at the Shroob in your arms, seeing that he had fallen asleep. “I, um…” You cleared your throat, looking away with a slight blush. “I should go put him in his bed for a while and let him sleep before going out.”

Elder Princess Shroob gave a nod, reaching over to affectionately pat your head. “I WILL… I will find you… later.” She looked at the sleeping Shroob, realizing that she should try to be quieter. Thankfully, he didn’t stir not one bit.

“Alright.” You adjusted your grip on the Shroob, looking over the kingdom one last time as a thoughtful look crossed your face. “I’ll see you. Later.” 

…You stood there for a bit longer, seeming like you didn’t want to leave her side quite yet. The Shroob began to snore. Your arms started to shake a little, likely aching from holding him for so long.

^Go.^ She patted your head once more. 

You gave her a cheeky smile before shuffling off, going out of the throne room and into the hall. She watched you leave, a mix of fondness and gratitude in her crimson eyes. When your footsteps could no longer be heard, a soft, almost tender smile graced Elder Princess Shroob's regal features. 

Turning back to the window, she continued to observe the Shroobs outside, delighting in their excitement and camaraderie. 

It was heartening to see her subjects so unified, especially in the wake of the tumultuous times they had faced. She could recall the days where her people had to act as hardened warriors and ruthless killers, just so they could survive as a species. In the end, though, she was so glad to have you by her side…

What is this?

'Quest tober is an event where people can request fics for a certain time period! I usually like to challenge myself, aaand I've certainly been slacking on regular requests, so I figured I'd give this a go for a second time.
