Elantris, chapter 8
kalessin reads cosmere
chapter 1 | chapter 7 | chapter 9
So Sarene is setting herself up as a harmless but annoying airhead, to get access to the court. Yeah, Iadon isn't a very shrewd politician.
In only ten years time, the peasantry of Arelon has gone from self-owning farmers to de facto slaves? That's quick, even with the aid of hired mercenaries.
Wait, Elantrians provided the basic necessities for free to the rest of the people, like a kind of UBI? OK, that does explain a lot. The collapse would have been very hard.
Ah, so Raoden didn't approve of his father's rule, especially about enslaving the peasantry? That's the clandestine meetings, I assume.
And here's an explanation for why Kiin doesn't hold a title, at least not officially. So he's definitely here by design.
No Sarene, Raoden isn't dead dead, and his father didn't have him killed. But you'll find out, I guess.
Adien comes across as on the autism spectrum. And his younger siblings are extremely accomplished, it seems. His mumblings sound like something to pay attention to.
Sarene has stumbled on Hrathen whipping up hate against the Elantrians? This is going to be fun.
Heh, the old "innocent questions" strategy. Nice. And Hrathen knows he's been played. So that's hostilities officially opened. With Dilaf even more, I guess. At least Hrathen seems to respect her, however reluctantly.
And thats Raoden and Galladon she's spotted, although she doesn't know, of course.

Ok so after somehow reading almost every cosmere book out yet (donât ask how because I donât know) Iâm going to list my top 5 and why (using those English class literary analysis stuff)
Possibly spoilers idk
Oathbringer: This might just be me but that 45 page chapter at the end just did something. It was really cool to see all the storylines really truly intersecting together. WOR had that but not until halfway through the book or whatever + Jasnah was alive!! Minus points for making me sad but I knew someone was going to have to die (itâs a Sanderson book you canât get away without a favorite character dying. And absolutely nothing could possibly prepare me for Dalinars backstory. Not only that but the Kholin men just saying fuck you to gender specific roles was really a nice fun touch too.
Warbreaker: I LOVED the magic style and thought it was super interesting and unique and something that Iâve never seen before in any books. And I love way that even though the sisters didnât really like each other, Vivenna and Siri still loved each other which is incredibly true of any sisterly relationship. (I should know I have 3). Not only that it was also heartbreaking in scenes. When Vivenna was in the mercenaries basements with all the dead bodies I was scared for her. I also loved Lightsongs arc and the way he didnât take no for an answer.
Mistborn The Final Empire: No book has ever brought me close to the way I felt when kelsier died. I was excited for the way that he was going to take down the lord ruler and was super curious about what he would do after that and then he was dead and I CRIED. Not only that I loved the way that we got to see Vin being more trusting of the crew over the book and even think of them as a family. The writing was a little dense at times but it is high fantasy. The characters were incredibly relatable and funny and I would profoundly like to say that this was one of the few books that Iâve cried over.
Elantris: Now I may have just finished this book but I canât get it out of my head. The ways that things all intersected so neatly together was amazing! I do wish we got more Raoden and Serene interactions but thatâs fine. Itâs amazing how beautifully crafted just words on paper can be when you think about it and to me Elantris is definitely one of those types of books. However with that being said, I do wish that we got to see more of the magic itself being used than the little bits that we got and Hrathenâs storyline was really confusing to follow at times. I didnât like how he kinda seemed like he somehow wanted to get with Serene by the end, but nonetheless Elantris was a super fun book that Iâd love to shar with my friends and family.
The Way of Kings: Maybe it was the 4,505 YEARS and 8 months between the prelude, prologue and first 2 chapters that hooked me or maybe it was because Ive always struggled with finding books that interested me that werenât super short and something that I would read in a day. I donât know. But TWoK really captivated me. Sure. I found it difficult at first because before I read this book I was reading lots of YA fantasy books and had finished the throne of glass series so this was kind of a real nosedive of a dip into more adult fantasy books, but nonetheless I loved it. This is a book Iâve tried to get others to read as I know theyâd enjoy it just like I did. I also really love the character interactions. At first I couldnât really understand them, but I plan on rereading the series real soon and will definitely have a better flow of it. The part where young Kaladin saw Tiens body on the field was CRUSHING to me and i think it was a moment similar to that or maybe it was the honor chasm scene (Iâm not sure) but there was definitely a big part there that just made me go âoh? I think I understand the plot! This just got interesting.â Boy was I wrong (THE BACK COVER BLURB DIDNT DO ANYTHING FOR ME) I also love the artwork throughout the entire stormlight archives series as a whole and canât wait for whatâs in store in stormlight 5!!
Honorable Mention goes to The Bands of Mourning: The group was just at their peak of chaos and honestly that is what every good book needs. A chaotic group! And even if theyâre being chaotic you can still somehow learn so much about the character and their backstories too. Iâve always loved Wayne. Maybe itâs his humor or maybe itâs something else entirely, but when he was able to shoot that gun at Telsin I was excited for him because it shows growth through traumatic experiences (which is something I go to therapy for) Not only that, but I love the broadsheets throughout the entire series so far. Thatâs such a unique way to show that the times are getting more modern in a way. However Iâm not a fan of Waxâs utter obliviousness to things at times.
I do have to say that one of the things that is really interesting to me in any Sanderson writing is that he doesnât stray away from topics that arenât directly relating him. And he doesnât go into those topics uninformed either. He does research! I think on the Jasnah page of the coppermind there was something about how he went onto atheist message boards to really learn more about her. How many other authors do that? Even if he doesnât have it 100% the best with some kinds of representation (at times) I love how he doesnât stray away from mental illnesses, adhd, autism, physical disabilities, ptsd, and more. Thatâs such a rare thing to see in authors these days. Everyone seems to just stick to what they know and that gets kind of boring.
So basically yeah. Just my ramblings and stuff. :)

Aliens? Please explain
If youâre reading this, beware of MAJOR SPOILERS for the entirety of the Stormlight Archive so far, and brace yourselves for a massive infodump. Also I tried to put this under a read more but for whatever reason tumblr put it inside the ask itself.
Yes, there are many aliens or descendants of aliens in the Stormlight Archive. First, though, a bit of an astronomy lesson...
Stormlight takes place in a dwarf galaxy, with a series of planets orbiting different stars. This is known as the âcosmere,â Some of these planets are known as Shardworlds, meaning they have been Invested with magic energy (called Investiture), which manifests differently from Shardworld to Shardworld.
The cosmere is comprised of three Realms: the Physical Realm, the Cognitive Realm, and the Spiritual Realm. The Physical Realm is much like ours, though it has magic in it. The Cognitive Realm is the Realm of thoughts and minds, where ideas - how something thinks of itself - exist in pseudo-corporal forms (the exact metaphysics is unknown). The Spiritual Realm is the Realm of souls and how they Connect to each other. Note: everything has a soul, even non-living things. All three Realms exist universally in the Invested parts of the cosmere.
The Cognitive Realm is the most important of the three Realms in this discussion. While the Cognitive Realm roughly maps to the Physical Realm, distances arenât quite the same, meaning that some things that are physically far apart are closer together in the Cognitive Realm. Some things have more cognitive presence than others (think humans vs a rock) and this corresponds to the size of their manifestation in the Cognitive Realm. Since there is very little cognitive presence in outer space, due to it being a vacuum, planets end up very close to each other in the Cognitive Realm.
It is possible for a person to transition between the three Realms at certain spots, called Perpendicularities, provided that that person is aware of how the cosmere works and/or is Invested enough to transition between Realms on their own. From here, they can âphysicallyâ navigate through the Cognitive Realm, using the shortened distances between planets as a way to âworldhop.â People who worldhop are called worldhoppers. Worldhoppers are the cosmere equivalent of extraterrestrial life.
Every book in the four main cosmere worlds - Stormlight, Mistborn, Elantris, and Warbreaker - have featured at least one worldhopper, though you have to be rather cosmere-aware to spot him sometimes (Iâll give you a hint: he often takes the form of a beggar or storyteller, and thinks himself very witty...). In Stormlight, which takes place on the planet Roshar - also the name of its only continent - there have been at least 1...2...3...4...5...6...7...8...9...plus another 10.............a lot. Big things are happening on Roshar, cosmere-wise, and a lot of people are making their way there, mostly for unknown reasons.
But this is in present-day Roshar, and not actually that big of a spoiler. This information is all part of the behind-the-scenes story of the cosmere that we get glimpses of through the various books and short stories. So whatâs up with the big plot twist that most of the characters from Stormlight are descended from worldhoppers, aka aliens?
Well, for that we need to turn to some theology: specifically, Vorin theology, the main church in eastern Roshar that many of our beloved Alethis follow (or outright reject, in one case). Vorinismâs basic cosmology is as follows:
Humans once lived in the Tranquiline Halls, a world of peace.
The Voidbringers came from Damnation and drove them out to Roshar.
The ten Heralds fight the Voidbringers during each of the Desolations, a time of cataclysmic destruction that wipes out nearly all of humanity. They are accompanied by the Knights Radiant: normal people given the ability to Surgebind, or the ability to manipulate Rosharâs Investiture.
In Ahariatiam, the Last Desolation, the Heralds finally forced the Voidbringers back into the Transquiline Halls, where to this day the Heralds continue the fight against them.
Humans, when they die, return to the Tranquiline Halls. If they excelled in their Callings - what they are best at and devote themselves to developing - they will join the Heralds in their fight against the Voidbringers. Normal people just sleep, waiting the day when the battle is over.
The exact nature of the Tranquiline Halls is never explained, nor how the humans were expelled by the Voidbringers, but since itâs where human souls return after they die, itâs not a physical place so much as a metaphysical place. Itâs like Heaven on earth. Itâs not a physical place you go to so much as a non-physical place where your soul goes. This is how the Tranquiline Halls and Damnation (basically Hell) are treated in the Stormlight Archive by the practitioners of Vorinism.
Quite frankly, the average Rosharan doesnât seem that concerned about the nature of the Tranquiline Halls. Thatâs a matter for the ardentia, the monks of Vorinism. Instead, Vorins are more concerned about Voidbringers. Though supposedly theyâve been trapped in the Tranquiline Halls with the Heralds, there are many folktales and superstitions about the Voidbringers still existing on Roshar. Knowledge about what, precisely, Voidbringers were is hard to come by. Itâs been 4500 years since the Last Desolation, 2000 years since the Knights Radiant abandoned their oaths and betrayed mankind (an event known as the Recreance), and 500 years since a group of ardents known as the Hierocracy attempted to take over all of Roshar, purging as much information as they could of the Knights Radiant and the Recreance. This included much of the information about the nature of the Voidbringers. What _is _known is that they were extremely powerful and very dangerous, bent on destroying humankind after chasing them out of the Tranquiline Halls.
In the first book of Stormlight, Jasnah Kholin, the foremost scholar in all of Roshar (and avowed renouncer of Vorinism), discovered the origins of the Voidbringers: the parshmen. See, humans are not the only sentient humanoid species on Roshar. There are the parshmen, people with hardened carapace instead of skin, who are slaves to most of the kingdoms of Roshar because of their obedience, endurance, and low intellectual ability. Jasnah theorized that, at some point since Ahariatiam, humans figured out how to enslave Voidbringers into parshmen. This is quite the startling realization, because Jasnah, among others, believes that the Voidbringers are coming back. The Last Desolation may not have been so final after all....
In book two, the Voidbringers return. Enough parshmen who werenât enslaved and retained enough intellectual ability to function (known as the Parshendi) summoned the Everstorm, a cataclysmic hurricane from their god Odium that returns to parshmen their ability to think, thus freeing them from enslavement. And it turns some parshmen into Voidbringers, and each pass of the storm returns more and more of them. The disgraced Knights Radiant have also begun to return, supported by their god, Honor, in order to fight the Voidbringers and protect mankind.
All of this changes in book three, Oathbringer, in chapter 111, âEila Stele,â towards the end of Part Four, over a million words into the series. The Eila Stele is the oldest known written document on Roshar, carved into a stone and believed to be from before the Desolations began, rumored to be written by the Heralds themselves. However, until Oathbringer, it was written in a dead language called the Dawnchant, for which translations have been lost. Through a specific use of Investiture, though, Jasnah and her scholars are able to translate the Dawnchant and provide a translation of the Eila Stele, which reads:
They came from another world, using powers that we have been forbidden to touch. Dangerous powers, of spren and Surges. They destroyed their lands and have come to us begging.
We took them in, as commanded by the gods. What else could we do? They were a people forlorn, without a home. Our pity destroyed us. For their betrayal extended even to our gods: to spren, stone, and wind.
Beware the otherworlders. The traitors. Those with tongues of sweetness, but with minds that lust for blood. Do not take them in. Do not give them succor. Well were they named Voidbringers, for they brought the void. The empty pit that sucks in emotion. A new god. Their god.
These Voidbringers know no songs. They cannot hear Roshar, and where they go, they bring silence. They look soft, with no shell, but they are hard. They have but one heart, and it cannot ever live.
The original Voidbringers were not parshmen. They were humans who invaded Roshar after destroying their home planet, likely escaping through the Cognitive Realm and emerging into the Physical Realm on Roshar, the nearest planet.
The first and last paragraphs are where we find the proof of this. âThey came from another worldâ is fairly clear, as is âThey destroyed their lands.â The last paragraph is where we learn that the Voidbringers were humans, not parshmen, who actually call themselves the âsingersâ. The references to the Voidbringers bringing silence is due to the fact that singers are attuned to the Rhythms of Roshar, a cosmere-wide series of vibrations throughout the Spiritual Realm, though singers are the only ones able to feel/hear them. Humans cannot, and are therefore âsilent.â They also are âsoft, with no shell,â referring to the fact that they have skin instead of carapace.
The tl;dr of everything else is that after humans fled to Roshar, they were given land by the singers, who took pity on them. However, humans then tried to conquer other parts of Roshar that belonged to the singers. The singersâ gods (spren, aka parts of Honor) betrayed them for the humans, and so the singers turned to Odium - who had followed/chased/been brought by humans to Roshar from their original home - for help in order to fight back against the humans. In response, the Heralds worked with Honor to trap Odiumâs soldiers in Damnation, ushering in the cycle of Desolations. The term âVoidbringerâ is associated with Odium, and so basically anyone whoâs allied with Odium, and thus became associated with the singers, as they were the soldiers of Odium. Eventually, the humans won. Or so they thought. Now, Odium and his soldiers returned, and humans once more are fighting to defend themselves from the Voidbringers.
This is where our beloved characters find themselves: fighting another war against Odium and the Voidbringers and facing another Desolation. Except this time, the rightfulness of the war is brought into question. Are the humans right to be fighting against the people who were just trying to defend themselves from humans in the first place? Previously, the humans had Honor on their side to ensure them of the morality of their battle, but Honor was killed by Odium shortly after the Recreance, when the Knights Radiant gave up their oaths upon learning the truth about the Voidbringers. Humans have no God to guide them anymore.
We havenât yet seen the fallout from the translation of the Elia Stele. Pretty much immediately after the translation was published, an Everstorm approached, with only hours to prepare for a massive battle in which Odium made his first major overture of war. The book ended shortly thereafter. We will have to see what happens in book four, which comes out in November.
So yes. The biggest plot twist of the Stormlight Archive thus far is that it is actually a story about dealing with the effects of an alien invasion in which the aliens won but then forgot they were aliens. In book four, there our heroes will have to grapple with the dubious morality of their way and the themes of the book will include discussions about postcolonial theory and decolonization. In this essay I will

7, 8, and 14 for the author asks?
thanks for the ask! :D
7. How do you feel about prologues?
When it comes to things like prologues, I feel itâs important to remember that these are narrative tools; when used correctly, they can be incredibly effective. For example, if you need to instill a promise for action or mystery but you know your story starts off relatively chill, including a prologue is an excellent way to get that across without sacrificing the story you want to tell.
When used correctly, prologues can do amazing things! I talk about Brandon Sanderson a lot, as heâs one of my favorite authors, but he does prologues pretty well. Elantris is, in my opinion, one of his better prologues. It sets up the worldbuilding and gives the readers the knowledge they need to understand the opening scene. Without the prologue, the first chapter would not have landed correctly. In contrast, the prologue in The Way of Kings doesnât always sit right with me. Having read the series, I understand it now, but the length of TWOK means the promise laid out by the prologue isnât fulfilled for maybe 500 pages? And at that point itâs very likely the prologue is completely forgotten about, and thus not terribly effective.
So, in essence: itâs a tool. It can be used well, or it can fall flat. It all depends on the execution.
8. How do you feel about epilogues?
Similar to prologues, epilogues are tools. Unlike prologues, I donât have as many thoughts on epilogues. Theyâre a good way of setting up a conflict/sub-plot in between books in a series (as we see with Hoidâs ending chapter in each Stormlight Archive book), and can be a nice way of tying up loose ends, especially if those loose ends wonât be resolved for an extensive period of time that wouldnât be particularly interesting to read about in depth.
I donât mind them, but I donât think about them much, either.
14. Whatâs the one word you can never spell/use properly, no matter how hard you try?
Itâs a toss-up between bureaucracy and nauseous, neither of which I spelled correctly on my first try. I donât know why, but I just canât wrap my head around the way the letters go.

Cosmere Traitors, Rated
Rating the Betrayals & Betrayers in the Cosmere, because I can. Under a cut because Spoilers! and apologies for minor foul language
Elantris
Hrathen: 8/10, turning on Dilaf the Fanatic (who, to be fair, had turned on him first). A well executed âNot On My Watchâ fueled by decency and his snarky affection for Sarene. Overall Satisfying to read.Â
Warbreaker:
Bluefingers: 3/10 Evil chancellor of evil, itâs nothing personal but you have to die now, Siri! Does not hit me where I live. Especially not compared to the other main traitor in your book.
Denth: 12/10 top level betrayal! Oh ho ho, you manipulative mercenary of a character- manipulating the reader as much as your victim. Character Most likely to make you wince when mentioned by someone liveblogging. [Insert âNewsflash, Princess, Iâve been kidnapping you the whole damned timeâ meme here ]
Mistborn
Kelsier: 7/10, not a betrayal so much as a WTF. Running a con within the con is a classic of the genre, but still. I knew you were up to something, but not the extent. Also Secret History! Talk about What Cannot Be Killed!
Reen: -3/10, Sacrificed himself to keep Vin safe, Ruin used his voice to keep Vin paranoid for years. Definite case of Good is not Nice, Tearjerker.
TenSoon: 10/10 Excellent betrayal, just not of Vin Replacing the Shapeshifter with another shapeshifter: Clever Giving the person your supposed to be spying on (but like better than your Boss) enough clues so that when youâre commanded to betray her, she can force you NOT TO DO IT? Better Going back to the Kandra Homeland and starting a Revolution that leads to the Ultimate downfall of Ruin? Best. Doggo. Ever.
Era 2 Mistborn
Tillaume: 4/10 Butler (attempting) to Do Murder in a Murder Mystery set in vaguely Victorian era?*clucks * But a bonus point for attempting to redirect the heroes onto other pursuits before blowing yourself up, and thus setting up excellent time bubble banter scene.
Paalm/Lessie/Bleeder: 5/10. Wax is sad. You should feel bad, except youâre dead, again. Because you made him shoot you in the head, again. Because you set the drama dial to 11 and Spiked it there. Nice work.
Telsin: 2/10 Sister-Damsel not actually a Damsel? Check. Sister the Better Villain? Double check. Sadly otherwise not leaving a large impression on me compared to the Protagonists? ah well.
Harmony: Â 3/10 Being God is hard, okay? That Said, Paalm got a raw deal.
Stormlight Archive
Shallan: ~3/10, Girl you have got to stop putting yourself in sticky situations where the only way you can see out of it is to murder your authority figures. OTOH, Tyn did not see Pattern-Blade coming, so you do you.
Kabsal: 9/10, a shifty guy but I thought he was just a spy (and a bit skeevy for using Shallan) but Poisony Fake Ardents get what they deserve, sir.
Sadeas: 7/10, Resident slimeball in tasseled Shardplate, we knew you were going to be trouble when you walked in, but you played Dalinar like a well beaten drum. Pity you were a starter villain who had outlived your usefulness except as a lingering regret in the minds of better characters.
Jakamav: 1/10, you are a fairweather friend who then shows up with the other kids to try to beat up on your friend because heâs out of favor. Then gets your butt kicked to the curb where it belongs.
Amaram: 11/10, We knew it was going to be bad, but reading the chapter where Kaladin gets his brands for the first time is terrible. Amaram has a facade of honorable behavior hides true self-serving loathsome core, yet he remains smarmy to the bitter, gem encrusted end. Turns out that the one thing Kaladin and Jasnah independently agree upon is that Amaram sucks.
Moash: 0/0, F*#$^@ YOU MOASH! WE COULD HAVE HAD IT ALL! But you threw it all away! Bad Man! You kicked a toddler so you could kill his father in front of him, WTF. IâM STILL HAVING FEELINGS ABOUT THIS! UNLIKE YOU!!!

Scrapbook 2019 | Pt. I
Normal font - meh, it was okay | Italicized titles - enjoyed quite a bit | bold titles - love | titles with an asterisk* - all time favorites | (bracketed titles) - re-watches/re-reads | strikethough - dislike
Goals are: read one hundred books this year, finish five video games, write something novel-length and write something original. These last two goals CAN be combined.

What Dreams May Come by Lenore | Crimson Peake | Edith/Thomas | 5k | Ghosts are real, and there are things that tie them to this world. Sometimes it's because they want to linger, and sometimes it's because they are trapped. Sometimes ghosts need the help of the living before they can be truly free.
and prove your body wrong by paperclipbitch | The Defenders | Matt Murdock/Jessica Jones | 1k | Neither of them can read minds, but they both fake it for their day jobs.
these roads will take you into your own country by notbecauseofvictories | American Gods | Shadow/Laura, Gen | 5k | Hereâs a joke for you: a Muslim, a zombie, and a leprechaun walk into a bar in Misery, Indiana. No one stares, because no one in the puckered, shitty asshole of Misery, Indiana gives a fuck. The Colts are playing.âFucking new gods,â the leprechaun mutters, hunching his shoulders almost up to his ears. âGridiron and Pepsi commercials.â
Small Step For Man by Toft [archived by yuletide_archivist] | Greek Myth | Artemis/Apollo | 4k |Â "It's all right, sister," Apollo whispers, and his arm is warm around her shoulder. She forgets, he is her twin, he is her other half; he knows her almost as well as she knows herself. "We're still the same."
learning curve by Yuu_chi | Detroit | Hank/Connor | 15k | âWhile sexual activity is not my default purpose, I do possess the capability,â Connor says without so much as batting an eye, unaware that heâs completely shattered Hankâs world view in one single sentence.
machine learning by kriegersan | Detroit | Hank/Connor | 31k | âThis kinda shit doesnât go away overnight. Itâs only been a few months, Connor. Weâre only just starting to know what this is gonna look like.â Lt. Anderson throws back his beer.âYou think I donât know that?â He sounds defensive. He tempers his voice. âIâm simply processing.â
eighteen wheels on an uphill climb by blackeyedblonde | Detroit | Hank/Connor | 73k | Hank is going to die. Heâs going to die right here in Kentucky, 53 years old, halfway to broke, and tragically sober. Survived only by a nine-year-old St. Bernard and the 31-year-old twink who delivered the fatal blow.
Fuck pride (pride only hurts, it never helps) by ImogenGotDrunk | Detroit | Nines/Gavin | 40k | What Gavin cannot deal with is Connorâs replica; two inches taller, blue-eyed, and with a mouth that Gavin doesnât know whether to punch or take between his teeth. The RK900 model has been assigned as his partner for the foreseeable future.
linguistics, semantics by pseudoanalytics | DBH | Hankcon | 49k | "So, what? Cyberlife gave you a preference for ugly, old, washed-up bastards?" Connor intentionally allows himself to appear unamused. "Absolutely not." He waits for Hank to look at him again before delivering his punchline. "I believe I developed that for myself."
Skin Deep by bughnrahk | DBH | Hankcon | 50k | Hank is 53 years old. He's never had a soul mark, doesn't have a soul mate. And he's fine with that. He cheated the system once and it cost him everything he had. Never again.When August 2038 rolls around and the number '313 248 317 - 51' appears on his arm in perfect Cyberlife Sans font, exactly where a soul mark should be, Hank wants nothing to do with it.
Watch Me, Watch You by elefseus (oscillos)Â | DBH | Hank/Connor | 82k | WIP |Â "How do you go about living when everything you've ever known changes? Can you?"
the most formidable lies by fshep | DBH | Connor/Gavin | 15k | WIP | Gavin is given an ultimatum: agree to give his motherâs coworkerâs son a chance, or introduce his family to his new boyfriend, Connor, who isnât his boyfriend at all.
February
and we'll figure it out by consumptive_sphinx | Temeraire | Lawrence/Tharkay | 1.5k | Everyone is born with their soulmate's name written on their skin, somewhere. Laurence has two names. Neither of them are in a script he can read.
Propriety and Fate by esama | Temeraire | Lawrence/Tharkay | 3.5k | It isn't as if one can go and talk about such things
Watercast by Fishwrites | Voltron | Keith/Lance | 205k WIP, Chapter 15 | Shiro has been a Galra prisoner for over a year; with his flight feathers clipped and unable to fly. Desperate to escape, he jumps overboard while being transported to the capitol on a Galran ship. Lance is a merman who saves him from drowning. Keith thinks Shiro is about to become mermaid dinner. Hunk just wants Lance to stop going to the surface all the time, dammit!
Afterlife by jaegermighty | Haunting of Hill House | Gen, Luke-centric | 6k | Leigh and Steve name their daughter Eleanore, with an 'e' on the end which is more old-fashioned, they say. Eleanore Olivia Crain. Lots of dead people in that name; Luke's not a fan. Not that anyone asked his opinion.
in memoriam by oxymoronic | Bartimaeus | Gen | 1.5k | Kitty Jones has but a little strength left in her body, and she has decided on this lazy summer's night to spend it on the question which has plagued her for half a century.
MarchÂ
Second Chances by rootbeer | Teen Wolf | Sterek | 2k | "A lot of times the âmarkingsâ were common, simple things you said to strangers all the time. 'Excuse me'; 'thank you'; 'hello'. Some got extremely romantic things like 'itâs you isnât it? Iâve been waiting for you' or 'Wow youâre really pretty'. And they were always the first words their soulmate would ever say to them.Of course, having 'You are the fucking worst kind of person in the world' tattooed down your side, didnât bode well.
have your cake and eat it too by keskasi | Naruto | Naruto/Sasuke | 7k | âWhatâs it like to give a blowjob?â Naruto asks.
Timing it Right by DragonBandit | The Bright Sessions | Mark/Damien | 14k | Damien's gold rises at Whitney. Mark tries to make things right.
April
and maybe you'll find a way to keep me a floating when i can't by LazyBaker | Stranger Things | 3k | Billieâs tough. Nothing but sharp edges with sharper teeth. Sheâs all bark and all bite.
A thousand by Ever-so-reylo (Ever_So_Reylo)Â | Star Wars | Reylo | 3k |Â âIâm going to kill you, now.â The problem isâreally, the crux of all of Reyâs problems at the momentâhe actually thinks he means it.
He Who Is Made Of Iron by MayContainBlueberries | The Queenâs Thief | Gen, Costis centric | Tea reminds Costis of his childhood.
May

Almost Cool by blacktofade | Buzzfeed Unsolved | Shane/Ryan | 30k | While filming the Yuma Territorial Prison episode, Shane gets bitten by what he thinks is a bat. Spoiler alert: it's not.
Two Worlds Collided by blacktofade | Buzzfeed Unsolved | Shane/Ryan | 10k | There's a new guy at work and Ryan belatedly realizes they've actually already met once before.
Keeping Out the Cold by blacktofade | Buzzfeed Unsolved | Ryan/Shane | After a strange ghostly encounter, Ryan and Shane begin sharing visions via a telepathic bond. AKA: the In Your Eyes AU that no one asked for.
Bringing Things Together by blacktofade | Buzzfeed Unsolved | 7k | âLook,â Shane says over the phone. âMistakes were made.â
Pride by astolat | Game of Thrones | Jaime/Cersei/Brienne | 22k Jaime didnât understand why Cersei suddenly insisted on trimming his hair and shaving his beard, but he also didnât care to fight her on it, even though heâd just as soon have kept the beard: it was bitterly cold in the small tower room with its arrow-slits. At night, even curled together under the two blankets theyâd been allotted, it took the better part of an hour before their bodies could warm the bed enough to sleep.
L'aura è tua messaggera by Rosyredlipstick | PJO | Nico/Will | 9k | Or, how the Stoll Brothers accidentally got Nico di Angelo and Will Solace together.
June
Competition by astolat | GoT | Jaime/Brienne | 11k | Almost the instant Brienne was out of earshot, Bronn turned to Podrick, jerked his head towards Jaime and asked, âHas he fucked her yet?â
Skin and Scales by Ernmark (M_Moonshade)Â | The Penumbra Podcast | Arum/Rilla/Damien | 17k |Â The man glares, and this time, Damien is certain it isnât a trick of the light: those eyes are violet as amethyst. He wears disdain like a second skinâ- or, perhaps, like the scales that he is missing.âLord Arum?â
I will become yours and you will become mine by spiderwebsitar | DBH | Reed900 | 24k | After an argument with his new partner, Gavin Reed wakes up five years in the future married to an android who wonât stop making fucking waffles.
Numerology by Hth | Schittâs Creek | Patrick/David, Sebastien/David | 20k | Still, it's true that Patrick can have his shy side. He likes to be a gentleman â Mr. Order Whatever You Want I'm Paying and Mr. Here Let Me Fix That For You and Mr. No David Not In the Backseat I Want It to Be Special â so David can't entirely rely on Patrick's willingness to charge forward for the greater good.
someone you like by caela | She-Ra | Adora/Catra | 5k | catwithabat u think ur so hipster but u just look like a lesbian 27m she_ra @catwithabat bc⌠iâm a lesbian. lmao 5m
Ugly Words and Pretty Things by Ias | The Terror | Crozier/Fitzjames | 4k | There are words for a man like that.
Sands of Time by tirsynni | LoZ | Link/Ganondorf | 97k | Link awakens in the desert with no idea how he got there, to encounter his worst enemy...except it was the King of the Gerudo, not the King of Evil, he faced.
death shall be no more by Ias | The Terror | Fitzjames/Crozier | 5k | "I'd rather we leave our tents behind and sleep two to a sack like the orphans we are, than to leave one man alone with last burdens."
and then redemption by spidermooned (softlyblue)Â | Marvel | Spiderman & Loki | 7k |Â "Kid," says Tony Stark wearily, "Please gimme a reason Loki's been spotted talking to Spiderman that isn't 'I wanted to be his friend'. Please. Tell me you can do that."
so many ways to talk about longing by lymricks | Stranger Things | Harringrove | 3.6k | Steve wakes up--in a pool lounger--to Billy Hargrove looming over him. Billy pushes his sunglasses down and Steve thinks sleepily that it must be so that Steve gets the full impact of Billyâs narrow-eyed glare. âHarrington,â Billy says. âWeâre fucking closed.â
sun gutters by lymricks | Stranger Things | Harringrove | 5k | Steve can feel Billyâs eyes on him. âYou should get here early,â Billy says, casually. âTomorrow. At six.â
Finders Keepers by blacktofade | Buzzfeed Unsolved | Ryan/Shane | 3k | Ryan wakes with a hangover and an empty bed, and only one of them he expects.
Back Room by forthegreatergood | Good Omens | Aziraphale/Crowley | 5.6k | Aziraphale actually does have quite an extensive collection of pornography in the bookshop. Like most of the questionable things in Aziraphaleâs life, itâs Crowleyâs fault.
killed with kindness by veterization | Persona 5 | Akechi/Akira | 52k | Goro can't quite figure out why so many people keep acting like they're his friend.
July
On mandated uniforms and workplace entertainment by Thei | Stranger Things | Harringrove | 2k | Robin loves this job. Besides an income, it also provides her with quality entertainment. Especially when she's working with Steve, and Billy Hargrove shows up.
don't make a shadow (of yourself) by lymricks | Stranger Things | Harringrove | 11k | WIP | And Billy, curled in a cheap plastic seat with his eyes squeezed shut, wonders, could it really be this easy? Just get on a bus and go home?
paper thin by sarcasticfishes | Buzzfeed Unsolved | Ryan/Shane/Sara | 9k | Shaneâs new neighbors are a morning-sex kind of couple.
your love is three times better by sarcasticfishes | Buzzfeed Unsolved | Ryan/Shane/Sara | 14k | Ryan grimaces as he types out the words, >Itâs Valentineâs Day. Donât you want to do romance stuff?
you, through half-shut eyes by brawlite | Stranger Things | Harringrove | 8k | Two parts sugary sweet summer vibes, one part snarky instagram stories, and three parts mutual pining.
damn.nation, now available on itunes by antistar_e (kaikamahine)Â | Good Omens | Crowley/Aziraphale | 11k |Â When lowly tempt-pusher Amphora (formerly of Stairwell 7B North, before she Fell,) gets the notice that end times are nigh, she gleefully quits her job and cancels her Netflix subscription and takes her place among the legions of hell.This, it turns out, was a bad plan.
The Dragon and Her Wolves by hapakitsune | Game of Thrones | Sansa/Dany/Jon | 60k | When the truth of Jon's birthright is revealed, control of the North and Daenerys's claim to the Iron Throne are both called into question. To preserve their tenuous alliance and secure her rule, Daenerys puts aside her personal feelings to arrange a marriage of political convenience between Jon and Sansa Stark.
Bonded by softestpunk | The Witcher | Emiel/Geralt | 13k | Regis is punished for Dettlaff's assumed death, Geralt comes to the rescue, and the two of them gain something neither of them would ever have dared hope for.
Something We Were Withholding Made Us Weak by triedunture | Good Omens | Aziraphale/Crowley | 17k | "Yes, exactly. Retire." Aziraphale reaches for the last remaining tartlet brimming with summer berries. "Somewhere along the south coast, perhaps."
something happens and i'm by brawlite | Stranger Things | Harringrove | 10k | Billy loves his job as at the Hawkins Community Pool. It's even better now that Steve Harrington's a lifeguard, too.

Iâm Gonna Keep You in Love with Me (for a While) by beethechange | Buzzfeed Unsolved | Ryan/Shane | 22k | âOkay,â Shane says finally. âOkay. Hereâs what weâre going to do. Weâre just going toâweâre going to be married. The only way out is through.ââUm,â Ryan says, because this plan strikes him as counterproductive to their shared goal of not being married.
YELLOW SQUARE by dejavu (suggcest)Â | Buzzfeed Unsolved | Ryan/Shane | 16k |Â âSince being the scene of those two, grisly double homicides in the early 1950âs, the Bringle House Bed and Breakfast has sat empty, waiting for the next couple stupid enough to try to stay all four nights.â

Things That Go Bump in the Night (and 7 till 12 at weekends) by HoopyFrood | Buzzfeed Unsolved | Ryan/Shane | 4k | Shane works at a Haunted House. Ryan is Ryan. Things go about as well as you'd imagine.
Everything's Weird and We're Always in Danger by beethechange | Buzzfeed Unsolved | Ryan/Shane | 15k | âIt wonât go away,â Ryan says miserably. âIâve been like this since we got here, basically, and it wonât fuckingââ

Fic reading asks: 4, 7, 8, 9, 12, 20? :)
4. When do you usually read fic?In the evenings â most of it lately is Pillars Prompts Weekly fills so itâs in the midst of the nightly Tumblr catch-up.Â
7. Answered previously
8. Describe your perfect story. What fic would you love to read that you donât think exists yet?
Hmmmm. It should have the wit and whimsy of The Princess Bride, the character development and faith journey of Till We Have Faces, the sense of wonder of Narnia, the humor of To Say Nothing of the Dog, the mysteries and plot pacing and unconventional romance of Elantris (thank you dear for that recommendation ;-D), andâŚhmâŚalways the best characterization, of course, with canon characters true to canon and original characters who are memorable and relatable. As far as specific stories I want to read? I guess thatâs why I run a prompts blog ;-)
9. What kind of fic do you avoid?
Mostly the explicit ones.Â
12. What makes you recommend a fic to everyone you know?
Hm, it can be a lot of things. Characterization is probably the main thing, again â OCs who were written well and became memorable to me are the sort I want everyone to know and love, and canon characters written true to themselves is refreshing and must be shared. :-D A good coherent plot helps too. And witty dialogue. And, well, the hidden gems â stories I like that havenât had a lot of attention yet, so I feel a need to recruit readers!
20. Post a reaction gif for the latest fic/chapter youâve read.Â
The last thing I read was the one I just reblogged for this weekâs prompt (by @weakzen), soâŚwhat I really need is a gif of giving Aloth the hug he needs after that experience. :-( Until such a gif exists, one of Aloth and Ielenia dancing will certainly suffice :-D

11 Questions Meme
tagged by @vardasvapors , aaah (thank u)
1. What is the best breakfast you ever had?
I have been, blessed, with some good breakfasts in my life but the most recent one I remember was this summer. Got to go visit a friend in Maine and she made us eggs with cheese and greens and tomatoes all mixed in. And we teased her ruthlessly because she claimed it was an omelette but it wasnât folded or anything, it was just a Deep Pan of Eggs and Good Things kind of stirred together. But we got to sit and eat our not-omelettes on the kitchen floor, because we could, and the morning sunlight was coming in just right and it was one of those âIâll remember thisâ moments.
2. What was your favorite book when you were 13 years old?
Iâve been in a Tolkien stranglehold since third grade, so LotR would have probably been 13yo meâs answer. More temporally specific, though, I remember loving Elantris by Brandon Sanderson. I should go back some time and see if it holds up.
3. Describe your ideal fic (one that you do not have to write)
Ooh, this is tricky because I read more meta than fic. I really like stuff that has the quirks of the source material while not being slavishly beholden to it. Travelers sharing stories I like. Iâd love more gen fluff about Green Lanterns chilling on Oa, sharing their latest exploits and having time to be people (aliens interacting!) Anything Middle Earthy that hits that sweet spot of not-quite-explainable hijinks, like Tom Bombadilâs everything or that good cryptid Maglor post. Â
4. Describe a fanart you would like to see
Tuor, Idril, and Voronwe being the power trio of my heart. A surefire way to get me is any sad-in-canon character getting hugs and affection. Fingon getting his hair done up all extravagant, with or without help.
5. State 1-3 opinions on cheese
Yes.
Cheddar has to be extremely sharp before Iâll bother with it.
Slicing cheese yourself is better than pre sliced, but getting it in/out of plastic can be hard for me.
6. Describe your most recent public or mass transportation experience
On the way home from above mentioned trip to Maine, took a bus that was supposed to have an hour long layover in Massachusetts. Sat in traffic, within signage distance of the station, for an hour and a half. Missed the bus, had to wait more hours to catch another one. Random man in bus terminal called me Supergirl.
7. Without checking to see if itâs correct, type something you have memorized (a line of poetry, a lyric, an equation) (yes iâm just straight up stealing this from june)
I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert- near them, on the sand
half sunk, a shattered visage lies;
whose frown, and * mumbles * and sneer of cold command
tell that its sculptor well those passions read;
the hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed,
and on the pedestal these words appear:
âMy name is Ozymandias, king of kings!
Look upon my works, ye mighty, and despair.â
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.
whoo boy that donât look right
8. A random headcanon for anything
Boromir was some flavor of not straight. Evidence: his lack of interest in a marriage explicitly stated in a book already pretty vague about romance. Legolas and Gimli have an ever escalating standing wager over who can tell the most epic story/song of their respective culture. Eventually it devolves into them embellishing stories of their friends and even random passersby they meet on their travels. Also experimenting with Elven/Dwarven narrative conceits in stories about other things (dwarven kennings and elvish concepts? i donât know where i was going with this)
9. Whatâs the nearest piece of art to wherever you are sitting right now (interpret as broadly as you wish)
Iâm chilling under the quilt my mother made me for my 18th birthday. It has dragons on it. Â
10. A dumb opinion you used to have
When I was a dumb middle schooler i was one of those godawful âLGBT? i bet theyâre just faking for attentionâ kids. Needless to say I , uh, grew out of that one pretty hard.
11. Freestyle here about a really good story (of any type) you recently read
Caught back up on a webcomic I enjoy, Stand Still Stay Silent, and itâs nowhere near concluded yet but OH MAN the most recent completed chapter hit me like a freight train. Does it count as reading if the panels that gut-punched me were wordless? Anyway if you arenât burned out on apocalypse stories you should try Stand Still Stay Silent, its got fun Nordic worldbuilding and cats and... Tuonela.Â
New Questions for those who want to participate!
1. What is the most recent song youâve listened to? Was it of your choosing?
2. If you could change one thing and only one thing about yourself, what would it be?
3. My wall is so empty, I want to cover it in pictures conspiracy-map style. What should I put up there?
4. Have you had any really lasting obsessions? Whatâs the oldest?
5. When it comes to a relationship (platonic or romantic), a deeper bond or a longer one?
6. Describe what you wore yesterday?
7. Describe a character you love ( OC or from fiction ). You can provide the name, or not.
8. Favorite self-indulgent storytelling trope?
9. If you could unread something, would you? And why? (bonus points for what)
10. What was your cliche childhood interest phase?
11. Describe a person from your life.

Elantris by Brandon Sanderson
After reading, and falling in love with, Brandon Sandersonâs series âMistbornâ and âThe Sormlight Archiveâ I decided to give his debut novel a go. And I definitely donât regret that choice. First of all, I really appreciate that itâs only one book. Nothing more. While I love epic fantasy series, the number of books in them (Wheel of time Iâm looking at you) can be a little bit overwhelming. Reading a fantasy book thatâs not really a part of larger series felt refreshing. Even though the whole story is âcrammedâ into one book it doesnât feel forced in any way. The plot is cleverly built with all the arcs nicely tied together. If you love fantasy you should read this, maybe while waiting for your favourite series to finally get a continuation. If donât love fantasy it may be a good start.Â
*Now comes the part where I discuss the plot more closely, so if you donât want to know anything about the history before reading I suggest you stop now. I wonât write any huge spoilers though so no need to be afraid to carry on*
The first thing that made me keep reading the book was its premise. Itâs one of the more interesting ones Iâve seen in a long time. The Elantris, city inhabitated by almost godlike creatures, has fallen. The Elantrians have changed into monsters. In the begining of the book we get the POV of the one of the people who has just turned in such a monster. Not only his probably one of my favourite characters, everything about city itself and its inhabitants is extremely intresting in my opinion. The way the fallen Elantrians function, with the pain of even the smallest bruises and cuts staying with them forever, slowly accumulating and driving them insane. The always present hunger, even though they donât need food to survive, cause as many characters like to remind us âtheyâre already deadâ. The misterious slime covering the once amazing city. And, finally, the magic itself. The mystery behind it. Why has it suddenly stopped working? How exactly did it work? The questions haunt Raoden (and the reader aswell) while heâs trying to find a way to survive in this dangerous city crammed with madmen.
Like that wasnât enough Sanderson spoils us with another amazing arc of the city outside Elantris, the capital of Arelon. The story starts with two very imporant personas arriving to the city, which will soon become the field of their political battle. First one, princess Sarene of Teod is a widow of the Arelonâs prince (or âthe man she has never metâ again amazing premise and concept), she arrived to Arelon to get married only to find her betrothed dead, and acually already married to her. The second âguestâ is Hrathen, high priest of Fjordell Empire. His mission is simple, to convert the Arelon to Fjorden religion in order to gain control over it peacefully. And Sarene is not going to let him do that. Through the pages of the book we observe their battle of wits, their amazing strategies and ways to deal with obstacles. Itâs even more intresting, because Arelonâs political situation isnât really a one of a stable country, people mostly hate the king and his system, so there can be seen signs of revolution scattered across the capital. It is truly a captivative story, in which every detail is relevant to the plot.
The only thing that wasnât perfect in this book, were the characters. They didnât feel 100% real, like they do in any other Sandersonâs novel. Let me get this straight, they werenât bad, but for me, they didnât have that special feel to them. Raoden was great, but heâs a little bit too perfect, although one might argue that it was authorâs intention to create him that way. Sarene and her strong, feministic (not sure if thetâs a word, but well) in a way personality was also cool but annoying from time to time, falling in the stereothype. I can argue that Hrathen was probably the most original and intresting one. A priest who is guided mostly by logic is something unique I think. Plus, itâs always nice to see things from the invaderâs point of view. Most of the secondary characters (with few notable exceptions such as Galladon, Karata, Roial and Dilaf) were kind of unmemorable and flat. Still Iâm not saying they were horrible, just not as perfect as I know they could be. With amazing premise and general idea for the plot and the world characters were only great.Â
My rating: 8/10Â
In general I give this book a solid 8 out of ten, because itâs a good-written fantasy novel. Wordbuilding and plot design are top-notch, while characters could use a little work with them. Still the novel is intresting and gives you that just one more chapter feel. And I could write another book on how great it is itâs just one book not a series. You should definitely read it.Â
P.S. just a quick side note I really love the Aons, the alphabet system similar to hieroglyphs in its concept. At the end of the book there are drawings of it, and theyâre so pretty and I want to quickly adress the back cover of the book, which in my edition has hilarious text on it. Itâs supposed to foreshadow the story, but itâs amazingly absurd once you read first 50 pagesÂ

Elantris, chapter 9
kalessin reads cosmere
chapter 1 | chapter 8 | chapter 10
Hah! I was right, Hrathen really did respect Sarene, to the point that he almost seems a bit smitten with her!
OK, Dilaf is getting on my nerves. Suggesting slaughtering all the Teoish so that all living souls will be under Fjordell rule is taking fanaticism very much too far. And apparently Hrathen thinks so, too. That guy needs watching. Closely.
So Hrathen had more planned than just that speech on the wall. Tempting the Kae aristocracy with rewards for conversion and loyalty? An old strategy. And my question about what the "old religion" Iadon spoke of is has been answered: worship of the Elantrians. Oh, and there was yet another old religion, in Duladel?
Hmm, I wonder just what Hrathen's special proposal to Telrii is?
I do find it interesting, though, that a significant number of the Arelene are still expecting Elantris to rise again.
~~~
It's been over a week since my last update. Apologies for the delay. I claim two excuses: one good, one irrelevant, according to my friend @mr-crocodile over on the ATOV discord server.
The good one: Our new puppy, Bessi, makes irresistible demands on my time and attention.
The irrelevant one: I'm involved in starting up a new political party, trying to fill a social liberal niche in Swedish politics, and the past week has been very intense with our first official members meeting, and all the preparations for it.
Elantris, chapter 7
kalessin reads cosmere
chapter 1 | chapter 6 | chapter 8
Intriguing, the magic of the Elantrians depended on the Shaod, and knowledge of the Aons, and that's it? Except whatever happened in the Reod affected the Shaod and somehow blocks it from working?
So Elantris didn't need coal, water, oil, food or anything else, because the Elantrians could conjure all those things and more?
Then I imagine they didn't need conventional military defense and fortifications either, for similar reasons?
Ah, that would be Hrathen, already trying to set his plan in action.
What's Raoden up to now? Recruiting his own gang?
Hah, he is! Starting with crafting the basic necessities to keep them safe from more injury, and thus sane for longer? Not a bad idea. But he still doesn't want people to know his real identity? Hmmm.
