Ghardaia
Ghardaia is part of a five town cluster right on the edge of the Sahara Desert but is also the name often used to refer to the entire towns of this huge state. Ghardaia is almost a country in its own right with its own dress, religion and social traditions. Fact for the day, Ghardaia is only one of five hilltop cities built almost a thousand years ago in the M’Zab valley. Serving as a major center of best date production in the whole of North Africa and as well as for the manufacture of rugs and cloths, Ghardaia is an enchanting experience for all the senses. Divided into three walled sectors, this unique and charming fortified town boasts a historic center, complete with an intriguing pyramid-style mosque, Ghardaia deservedly makes the list of the most beautiful places to visit in Algeria. A quick tip from me to you, make you sure your bag is loaded with empty and ready-to-use SD cards as I promise you, your fingers will be capturing more than a dozen picture in this rich and vibrant city!

Timimoun
Timimoun is an oasis in the beautiful and vast Sahara desert of Algeria, which is distinctive by its shifting sand dunes, palm groves, and much-needed salt lake. The magnificent sand dunes in the distance is spectacular backdrop to an already enchanting town, blessing your soul day and night. Timimoun, like any other place, and despite its small size, has its old district. Otherwise known as the Ksour, it possesses a similar form of architecture to that found in Taghit in the state of Bechar in the west – the intense, red mud walls. In the newer part of town, the French influence is evident, but with much of the original architectural styles being drawn upon to maintain some continuity in this beautiful town. Small in size but rich in culture, history, and aesthetic delights, Timimoun is without a doubt a magical place, with such generous people and great tea!

Tlemcen
Tlemcen is known for it’s rich history and diverse culture, and is now a melting pot for various musical and artistic styles. The textiles and handicrafts made by the amazing and creative Tlemceni people will have you leaving the city with a handful of antiques and souvenirs which are beautiful example of Berber and Arab-Andalusian heritage. The Great Mosque Sidi Boumedian masjid (mosque) standing as a stunning architectural masterpiece along with El Mechouar Palace. It is also one of the oldest and best preserved Almoravid buildings in the whole of the country. Tlemcen is heavenly framed by the majestic mountains and still enshrined in craftsmen charm. While visiting one cannot miss out on visiting the El-Ourit waterfalls which is nearby to another National Park in Algeria.

Setif
Another of Algeria’s cities which was founded by the Romans, Setif is situated in the Little Kabylie region of Algeria and is over 1,100 meters above sea level. The roman ruins here are well worth taking time to study. In addition to the Romans, the French have also left their mark on the city. Sights in the city include the main square with its Roman sculptures.

Timgad
Only 40km away from the state of Batna, Timgad is where the expensive ruins of an entire Roman town lays. The ruins are a little overwhelming at first but reward those that take the time to explore every row and road. This trip is without second thoughts worth it for what is arguably one of the most stunning Roman ruin sites in the world, you cant be in Algeria and not visit Timgad. Nothing else in Algeria will prepare you for the vastness of the Roman ruins other than Timgad. If you thought that Pompeii city is only in Italy, think twice my friend as Timgad is the Pompeii of Africa and even better!

Bejai
Bejaia is situated on Algeria’s Mediterranean coastline and this is the primary attraction for tourists when it comes to beach life and unforgettable summer moments. The history of the city is expansive and has been settled by the Vandals, Byzantines and Ottoman Turks. The museum in the city has various artifacts to prove this turbulent history. In addition to the museum there is also an impressive Spanish fortress and the so called ‘Monkey Peak’ which is home to the endangered Barbary Macaque monkey, if you are there have your cameras ready for spontaneous captures with the words most friendliest and most active monkeys. Bejai is as well an amazing attraction for a well planed camping trip in the mountains with friends and family, as the weather and atmosphere is convenient for such plan all year long, and bon fires and marshmallows never been better!
