Mickey And Minnie’s Runaway Railway To Have A Short Who Will Start The Ride
A pre-show cartoon clip sets up Mickey and Minnie’s picnic plans and lays the foundation for the upcoming journey aboard the attraction. Goofy makes a brief appearance as a train conductor, hinting at the chaos and turmoil that awaits riders on the Runaway Railway.
A “nothing can stop us now” refrain that Mickey and Minnie sing in the pre-show theme song will repeat throughout the ride as the picnicking couple encounter one calamity after another.
The opening scene in the first Disney ride dedicated to Mickey Mouse will start with a blast as riders enter the Disneyland attraction through a surprising sight gag.
A blast of smoke at the end of a cartoon film short introducing Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway will reveal an explosive hole blown in the movie screen, Walt Disney Imagineering announced Wednesday, Dec. 4. Riders will walk through the scenic illusion of a cartoon explosion in the screen to reach the trackless dark ride vehicles inside the attraction.
“It’s just the very beginning of what we have in store for you,” Imagineering senior creative director Charita Carter said during a tour of the new ride. “A lot of surprises and a lot of opportunities to be delighted.”
Imagineering offered tours of the new attraction during a media preview on Wednesday. Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway debuts March 4 at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida and in Mickey’s Toontown at Disneyland in 2022.
In Florida, riders will enter the attraction through the opulent lobby of the Chinese Theater replica at the heart of Disney’s Hollywood Studios. At Disneyland, Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway will take place inside the new El Capitoon Theater where the “Perfect Picnic” cartoon short is making its world premiere.
On the trackless dark ride, visitors will board a train headed for a picnic with Mickey, Minnie and their dog Pluto. Naturally, like any Mickey Mouse cartoon, things quickly go awry. The ride travels through a carnival, twister, waterfall, big city, factory and a stampede of bulls, with the trackless train cars splitting apart and reconnecting along the way.
“Every scene is so jam-packed,” Imagineer executive creative director Kevin Rafferty said during an interview. “It’s 10 pounds of potatoes in a five pound bag. There’s so much to see, so many Easter eggs, so many nods, such great stuff that hearkens back to the Disney Studio.”
Music in the new attraction’s lobby will feature remixed symphonic scores from Mickey Mouse cartoons. Movie posters in the Florida attraction will highlight classic Mickey Mouse film shorts such as “Mumbai Madness,” “Wonders of the Deep” and “Wish Upon a Coin.” The lobby decor will be significantly different in California.
“My whole mission is to make sure guests are happy from the moment they step in the building until the moment they step out,” Rafferty said during the tour. “So everything is happy, happy, happy.”

D23 Expo Announcements 2019
Epcot:
Renaming and reorganizing the sections of the park into four new neighborhoods: “World Nature” (Future World West), “World Discovery” (Future World East”), “World Celebration” (Entrance of the park spanning down to World Showcase Plaza), and the only returning member; World Showcase.
A recreation of “Cherry Tree Lane” and a whole new attraction based off of the ‘Mary Poppins’ movies will be brought to the UK pavilion.
“Journey of Water” will be introduced as a walkthrough attraction that connects World Celebration to World Nature. In this ‘Moana’ themed area, guests will learn about the natural water cycle and allow you to “meet and play with magical, living water”.
“Dreamer’s Point” will be a new area located in World Celebration that will feature a wishing tree, a new statue of Walt Disney, and an enchanted forest with a reimagined fountain. (This will be located in the current footprint Pin Central all the way to the Fountain of Nations.)
A new pavilion to play host to Epcot’s seasonal festivals will be constructed in roughly the area currently occupied by Club Cool and the Epcot Character Spot. The three story structure will provide ideal views for the new nighttime firework viewing.
All of Innoventions West will be demolished to make room for the new pavilion and “Journey of Water”.
Spaceship Earth (the attraction) will receive upgrades including a new script that will slightly alter the focus of the attraction. Instead of focusing on the history and progression of communication technology, it will instead focus on the changing of storytelling utilizing many of the same scenes from the current attraction. Guests will follow a magical “story light” that will guide you through the experience.
The 360 films in the China and Canada pavilions, “Wondrous China” and “Canada Far and Wide”, respectively, will replace the current films. “Canada Far and Wide” will debut in January 2020.
“Awesome Planet”, the new film for the Land Pavilion, will open in January 2020.
“Beauty and The Beast Sing-Along” will debut in January 2020 in the France Pavilion, sharing the same theater as ‘Impressions de France’.
“Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure” attraction and “La Creperie de Paris” quick/table service restaurant will both open in Summer 2020 in the France Pavilion.
After the limited time run of “Epcot Forever” is concluded, the new nighttime extravaganza “HarmonioUS” will debut as a permanent replacement for Illuminations. It is expected to be the largest production ever created for a nighttime show in a Disney Park.
The new ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ attraction in World Discovery will be named “Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind”. This will be the first roller coaster in Epcot and will feature a backwards launch. The attraction’s story will revolve around the guests going on a trip to Xandar, of which will go awry once the Guardians of the Galaxy come into contact. The ride vehicle will be able to rotate 360 degrees to allow guests to better focus on the action.
Next to Mission: Space the new restaurant will be called “Space 220″ and is slated to open this winter.
General Walt Disney World News:
A new app “Disney Genie” will be released in late 2020, this app is supposed to help organize and plan your day in WDW in conjuction to My Disney Experience.
The new Cirque du Soleil show in Disney Springs will debut March 20th, 2020
The new “Reflections” resort on Bay Lake will feature a restaurant inspired by ‘The Princess and the Frog’.
The Star Wars themed hotel being constructed will officially be called “Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser”.
The experience will take place as a two-day, two-night adventure on the ship “Halycon”.
Guests will be immersed into a full story in which their own actions make a difference in how the experience plays out as they come into contact with certain characters and The First Order.
On one of the days, guests will go on an “excursion” to Batuu, otherwise known as Galaxy’s Edge at Disney’s Hollywood Studios park.
Guests will be able to explore many different parts of the ship, and even train to use a lightsaber like Luke Skywalker with a training remote.
Disneyland:
A new daytime parade called “Magic Happens” featuring floats from ‘Coco’, ‘Moana’, and more will debut in Spring 2020.
Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway will open in 2022 in Toontown. The show building being called the “El CapiTOON” theater.
Disney California Adventure:
“Avengers Campus”, the new land in the former home of A Bug’s Land, will open in 2020.
This land will feature a Spider-man themed attraction in which guests will be able to shoot their own webs in helping Peter Parker capture miniature bots.
In Phase 2 of the land opening, a new attraction will take guests on a Quin-Jet to Wakanda and experience an intense battle against an unannounced villain.
A Doctor Strange themed experience will be revolved around the ruins of a “California Sanctum”.
A new restaurant “Pym Test Kitchen” will open that will feature oversized and shrunken foods caused by the “Pym Particle” featured in the ‘Ant-Man’ movies.
Walt Disney Studios Park (Paris):
Will be home to the other “Avengers Campus” and is set to feature most of the same offerings as it’s California counterpart in addition to the already planned ‘Iron Man’ retheme to the Rockin’ Roller Coaster
General Disneyland Paris News:
New concept art was released for the new Marvel themed rooms in the Hotel New York.
Hong Kong Disneyland:
In addition to the already existent ‘Iron Man’ and ‘Ant-Man’ attractions, the park is slated to receive some of the same offerings as the “Avengers Campuses” in California and Paris, but under the guise of the “Stark Expo” and not a third Avengers Campus.
Disney Cruise Line:
The first of three new ships set to sail soon for DCL will be named the “Disney Wish”. It will be the fifth cruise ship in the fleet and will feature the image of Rapunzel on the back of the ship, similar to the Dumbo figure on the back of the Disney Fantasy.
A new DCL port, “Lighthouse Point”, will open in conjunction to Castaway Cay as a Disney owned and operated piece of land for Disney Cruises to visit on Bahamian voyages. The land, with the help of legendary Imagineer Joe Rohde, will celebrate the Bahamian culture surrounding the port.

Disney Runaway Railway Update:
We have a look at Disney’s Runaway Railway’s exteriors for both Disneyland and Disney World. The short showcased is called the Perfect Picnic, and in Disneyland, the theater is called the El Capitoon. The Disneyland queue, I believe, will also be hosted by the Toontown Hysterical Society and incorporate a lot of toony props and gags. Chapek also explains there is a “secret twist” but doesn’t go deeper.

NOTHING CAN STOP US NOW 🚂 Finally got to really take in #MickeyandMinniesRunawayRailway and this ride is SO GOOD. If it wasn’t for Batuu at DHS, this would easily be my favorite attraction at the park. It’s so fun and so full of energy! I can’t wait to see what it looks like at the El Capitoon theater in Toontown. Anyone else into this ride? Mickey’s Toontown saw a bit of a change happen this week as work began for a new attraction. Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway will be arriving at Mickey’s Toontown in 2022. As part of the work required to bring this attraction to Toontown, hills behind Mickey’s Toontown were removed this week. The result is a skyline change for this animated town.
youtube
This will be the first of many changes for Mickey’s Toontown before the arrival of the attraction based on the Mickey and Minnie shorts that have been released in recent years. The new attraction is being built behind the Toontown Gag Factory. When finished, guests will enter the attraction through a new El Capitoon Theater in the area. There, the Perfect Picnic will be shown. Guests visiting the theater will also be able to see a special exhibit created by the Toontown Hysterical Society. It will include costumes and props from the toon world.
Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway is a trackless attraction that will take guests on an adventure into the cartoon world inhabited by Mickey and Minnie Mouse. On this crazy four-car train guests will set off for a picnic with Mickey, Minnie, and Pluto. Of course, things go wrong and soon the train is off on a crazy adventure. During this wacky ride, guests will encounter hurricanes, waterfalls and stampeding bulls as their train winds its way through the attraction.
The attraction’s entrance appears to be replacing the Toontown Gag Factory shop. Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway will also be opening at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in 2020 at the Walt Disney World Resort.
What do you think about the changes coming to Mickey’s Toontown and the arrival of this attraction? Share your thoughts in the comments below!

The opening of Mickey & Minnie's Runaway Railway in Mickey's Toontown at Disneyland introduced new trash and recycling can designs to the area. This can joins another addition found inside the attraction. The outdoor area around the El CapiTOON Theater now features light blue cans with darker trip, anchored by an emblem on the front featuring a Magic Broom from Fantasia. It's time for the 5th annual Magical Trash Year-in-Review, where we take a look at trash cans at the Disney theme parks and resorts worldwide. Yes, it's a weird idea, but you are going to keep reading, right? (View previous Year-in-Reviews) Some may note that it's been a somewhat rocky year for the Mouse, but trash can activity has been strong. As we've seen in previous years, this year's additions were primarily driven by attraction openings, including Mickey & Minnie's Runaway Railway at Disneyland, the opening of the World of Frozen in Hong Kong, and the arrival of the Zootopia in Shanghai. Unfortunately, we also saw the fastest introduction-to-removal can timeline with the closing of Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser - which had opened just a year earlier at Walt Disney World. Over the past year, MagicalTrash.com celebrated the 1,000 trash can photo milestone (only took 14 years!), while adding over 100 new entries. This was complimented by 1,600+ posts across social media networks, including Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Mastodon, Threads, and Bluesky. Posts were also added to Twitter/X, but frankly it's hard to continue supporting that platform due to its overall decline on many fronts (and I say that as someone who works in corporate social media professionally!). For 2023, Magical Trash tracked 16 substantial trash can design changes, a 14% increase vs. 2022's 14 tracked changes:
Added: 14
Historical Cans Added: 4
Updated: 0
Endangered: 0
Removed: 2
The US-based parks saw the most activity, with Disneyland Resort experiencing 6 changes, while Walt Disney World recorded 4 changes. Hong Kong Disneyland Resort and Disneyland Paris Resort both recorded 2 updates, and Shanghai Disney Resort saw 1 new addition. No notable changes were recorded for Tokyo Disney Resort or Disney Cruise Line.
Here's a detailed breakdown of updates:
ADDED New trash can designs that debuted in Disney theme parks over the past year
Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway (El CapiTOON Theater) - NEW Disneyland, Mickey’s Toontown With a movie theater setting, iconography is anchored by a popcorn bucket image with large “EC” letters.
Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway (M.A.G.I.C.) - NEW Disneyland, Mickey’s Toontown Outside the attraction are cans associated with M.A.G.I.C. - short for the Municipal Agency of Garbage Identification and Collection. Now that's a group we want to join!
World of Frozen (Arendelle Crest) - NEW - NEW Hong Kong Disneyland, World of Frozen The official crest of Arendelle features a crocus - a multi-color flowering bulb that typically blooms in the spring - and seen throughout the Frozen franchise.
World of Frozen (Wandering Oaken’s Sliding Sleighs) - NEW Hong Kong Disneyland, World of Frozen Furthering the rugged forest theme of the family coaster, decorative Scandinavian folk art patterns are found throughout queue, with geometric shapes highlighted in red, green, and orange hues.
Zootopia - NEW Shanghai Disneyland, Zootopia A surprising entry to Shanghai's bland trash can scene, green trash cans with zebra-like stripes on the lower portion combine with a city emblem.
San Fransokyo Square - NEW Disney California Adventure, San Fransokyo Square The shoehorned Big Hero 6 retheme of DCA's Pacific Wharf gave us new cans that looked a lot like the old cans - but with bonus "SFS" branding. Ho hum.
Journey of Water, Inspired by Moana - NEW Walt Disney World, Epcot, World Nature You can tell this is a modern Disney attraction because the name is an IP-laden paragraph. Lots of storytelling to explain "scenery."
Parkside Market - NEW Disneyland Resort, Downtown Disney Probably one of the more visually-stunning additions in 2023, Mickey Mouse + mid-century design. Simple concept, well-executed.
The Villas at Disneyland Hotel - NEW Disneyland Resort, The Villas at Disneyland Hotel New DVC borrows much of its design from Aulani. Not ugly, but also not magical. Were these picked out of a catalog?
Pixar Place Hotel - NEW Disneyland Resort, Pixar Place Hotel The retime of Disneyland's Paradise Pier Hotel features trash cans very similar in design to those implemented at The Villas at Disneyland Hotel. Maybe they got a 2-for-1 deal?
Disneyland Paris Reusable Tableware Cans - NEW Disneyland Paris, Adventureland France's Anti-Waste and Circular Economy Law is focused on phasing out improper disposal of waste. Food service at the French parks has implemented reusable table settings, which has impacted trash can design.
"Fantasyland 2" Backstage - NEW Disneyland Paris, Fantasyland A backstage can makes an appearance onstage as a support trash can from the “Fantasyland 2” zone, parked where everyone can see.
Pym Test Kitchen Food Waste - NEW Disney California Adventure, Avengers Campus After debuting combination food waste trash cans in Tomorrowland around 2021, Disneyland expanded the practice to the Avengers Campus at DCA.
Jollywood Nights Temporary Media Can - NEW Disney's Hollywood Studios, Grand Avenue Throw a sticker on an existing trash can and it's something new! Temporarily rethemed can at Disney's Hollywood Studios during a media event for Jollywood Nights holiday entertainment.
HISTORICAL CANS ADDED Retro trash can designs that were unearthed by new research this year, but are no longer in use
MK Main Street (1974) - HISTORICAL ADDITION Magic Kingdom, Main Street U.S.A. Early years of the Magic Kingdom featured very detailed trash cans on Main Street U.S.A, often in multiple colors. Quite a contrast from the undecorated brown cans used in the 2000s.
Farmer's Market (Late-1980s/Early-1990s) - HISTORICAL ADDITION Epcot, Future World, The Land The famed umbrella tables at The Land found their shapes emulated via the trash cans, which were primarily brown with light tan arches represented on all sides.
River Country (2010) - HISTORICAL ADDITION Walt Disney World, Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground 9 years after the water park closed, remnants of the ‘Ol’ Swimmin’ Hole’ could still be spotted at Fort Wilderness.
Mulholland Madness (2007) - HISTORICAL ADDITION Disney's California Adventure, Paradise Pier Tacky theme was on-point for DCA 1.0. This green can with road sign decal found a home in Paradise Pier.
UPDATED Existing trash can designs that have been modified or revised in the past year
None for 2023
ENDANGERED Trash can designs that still exist, but will most likely disappear in the future
None for 2023
REMOVED Trash can designs that have been eliminated from use at Disney theme parks
Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser (Interior) - REMOVED Walt Disney World, Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser The in-wall trash cans for the 100-cabin Corellian MPO-1400 model Galactic Starcruiser were in use for just 579 days.
Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser (Terminal) - REMOVED Walt Disney World, Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser You won't be needing to dispose of your garbage before boarding the MPO-1400 Star Cruiser Halcyon, as these cans will probably have a longer life than the hotel ever had.
One massive disappointment in 2023 was Walt Disney World's opening of TRON Lightcycle / Run in the Magic Kingdom's Tomorrowland. Generic silver cans, thus reinforcing WDW's continual cheapening out on themed trash can design. Paul Pressler called and even he thinks you can do better.
Here at Magical Trash we celebrated our 14-year anniversary covering the world of Disney trash cans, which included keeping up with various salt shaker merchandise releases that showcase the iconic can shape. 6 new designs were released during festivals: The Dude with the Food (DCA Food & Wine 2023), Amazingly Sweet (DCA Food & Wine 2023), Groovy Garden Orange Bird (Epcot Flower & Garden 2023), Stuck on Imagination Figment (Epcot Flower & Garden 2023), Chef Mickey (Epcot Food & Wine 2023), and Spaceship Earth (Epcot Food & Wine 2023).
If you happened to be at Tokyo Disneyland, you could have picked up a mini figure version of a Tomorrowland trash can or a TDS trash can toy. In the U.S. you could pick up a shirt or water bottle with a recycling can image proclaiming that you "Love Our Disney Parks" -- Disneyland or WDW-specific versions. There was plenty of trash can auction action as well.
Thanks to everyone who contributed photos, visited MagicalTrash.com, and interacted with this weird hobby over the past year. You've put a smile on my face as we all follow this goofy passion. As it's impossible to be omnipresent at 12 theme parks and numerous resorts around the world, let us know what we've missed! Thanks for an interesting year, CanFans! - Steve Tanner, your Magical Trash host

New details just unveiled for Mickey & Minnie's Runaway Railway at Disney’s Hollywood Studios & Disneyland’s Toontown
As we’ve previously shared, Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway—the first major Mickey-themed ride-through attraction and the first Disney TVA Ride based on a Disney Channel show—is coming to both Disneyland park in California and Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida. Today at the D23 Expo 2019, Bob Chapek, chairman, Disney Parks, Experiences and Products released a few more exciting details and sneak peeks!
At Disneyland park, the attraction will be opening in Mickey’s Toontown in 2022. The action takes place at the El CapiTOON Theater, where Mickey and Minnie are premiering their newest short, “Perfect Picnic.” Before you enter the cinema, you’ll experience a special exhibit created by the Toontown Hysterical Society featuring costumes and props from the toon world.
At Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Disney Imagineers are getting ready to open next year. You’ll be invited to the Chinese Theatre, which serves as the magic portal through which theatergoers will step from the human world directly into the cartoon world for one Goofy adventure aboard Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway!
Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway puts you inside the wacky and unpredictable world of Disney Channel’s Emmy® Award-winning “Mickey Mouse” cartoon shorts! Once you step into the cartoon world of Mickey and Minnie, you’ll board a train with Goofy as the engineer. Then, one magical moment after the next leads you to a zany, out-of-control adventure filled with surprising twists and turns.
With an original story and lovable theme song, Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway uses state-of-the-art technologies and dazzling visual effects to transform the cartoon world into an incredible and immersive multidimensional experience.
