“Ektaal” – The Abode of Dhokra Art & Artisans
A village where the art of Dhokra resides, where artisans preserve a heritage inhabiting for centuries, where imperfections are redefined, a village that goes by the name, ‘Ektaal’.
The quaint village of Ektaal, located in Chhattisgarh, is 18 kilometres away from its capital, in Pussore Tehsil. Ektaal is a crafts’ village, where you will find a community of artisans, deeply involved in the creation of dhokra handicrafted products, away from the hustle-bustle of the modern world. The village has been known to shelter not just ordinary, but award-winning artisans of the state and national level.
One would imagine much glory and beauty in such a place, but the village continues to exuberate its modest and rural aura, with families (mostly from the Jhara tribe) working as units, silently engrossed in creating wonders using the ‘lost-wax technique’. The artisans here are aware of the heritage and culture that a piece of dhokra art reflects as they have travelled across international waters to showcase their fabrications. From Paris to London and many other foreign lands, they take pride in sharing their stories and innocently flaunting the awards they have won.
Among the wide variety of products they create, one would find dhokra home decor items, tribal jewellery and unique figurines of Jhitku and Mitki, a romantic couple from the folklore of Ektaal. The process of creating these dhokra handicrafted products is long drawn, requiring patience and fine detailing. However, the enthusiasm shown during each step by these villagers is the paramount reason for the splendid final product.
Dhokra art created in Ektaal has reached museums, displays and the shelves of grand houses, but have these modest craftsmen received the credit due to them? Their life continues to be full of hardships and struggles. Inspite of that the humble artisans toil endlessly to curate products from their ‘pushtaini kala’ (ancestral art).

The two-way influencers : Seasons and Raagas
In Hindustani classical music, a raaga is a permutation of atleast five the twelve notes of the octave, and defined by a structure and style of presentation unique to itself. Every is associated with a certain mood; the unique combinations of notes associated with every raag create a sensual experience or Ras, which can be one of tranquillity, sorrow, celebration, love or devotion, amongst many others.
Every season as well, evokes similar types of sensual experiences for human beings and animals alike. Hence, the obvious association of raagas with seasons is prevalent in Hindustani classical music. The summer season evokes an experience of restlessness and yearning for water, cool and calm, due to the scorching heat, and also one of brightness and power due to the direct rays of the Sun. Hence, Ragas with Teevra Ma, or essentially sharp notes like those laying stress on Rishabh, like various forms of Saarang are associated with the mood of restlessness and yearning, similar to the "ras" produced by the summer season.

The monsoon season signifies the reduction of this intensity, in the most beautiful way, by the soothing drops of rain that fall from clouds in the sky. Thus, forms of Malhar produce a symphony of various types of "ras" , like awe at the thundering of clouds; the divine pleasure of a drizzle falling upon the scorched earth; the beauty of showers of rain turning all the vegetation bright and glistening green! In Raag Miyanmalhar, "Ni Sa Ma Re Pa" signifies the hope of a beholder gazing at rain clouds, "Ma Pa Ni Dha Ni Sa°" reminds one of the joy at the first shower that falls to the ground, "Re° Ma° Re° Sa° , Ga° Ma° Pa° Ga° Ma° Re° Sa°" signifies the fear and awe one feels at the thundering of clouds, and the feeling of uncertainty about when the rains will stop. The avroh combination of "Ni Dha Ni Pa Ma Pa Ga Ma Re Sa, Ni. Dha. Ni. Sa" reminds us of the calm and relief that spreads over the earth after a rain shower, that leaves streamlets, puddles and a cool temperature after it, as well as joy and freshness because of the vitality that it has restored. A myth associated with this raag, invented by Miyan Tansen, is that whenever he sung this Raag, it would immediately start to rain.

I am not sure about how far music can influence nature, it is akin to saying that the reflection can influence the source, raagas being a mere reflection of nature and it's moods. However, I would love to believe that it is true, given that Akash was generated from Atman, and so followed all the other elements of nature.
According to Brahmanand Valli of the Taittiriya Upanishad, man, who is the Creation, consists of the essence of food. Since Atman led to Akash, Akash led to Wind, Wind led to Fire, Fire to Water, Water to Herbs and Herbs to Food, can a human being who attains Brahman, that is the experience of reality, knowledge and infinity, connect back to the Atman and influence the five elements?

Translation: Om. He who knows Brahman attains the Supreme. On the above, the following mantra is recorded: “He who knows Brahman which is Reality, Knowledge and Infinity, hidden in the cave of the heart and in the highest akasa-he, being one with the omniscient Brahman, enjoys simultaneously all desires.” From the Atman was born akasa; from akasa, air; from air, fire; from fire, water; from water, earth; from earth, herbs; from herbs, food; from food, man. He, that man, verily consists of the essence of food
It is highly subjective but not metaphysically impossible. It is an inspiration for students who are striving to achieve excellence in their art: that achieving a state of Brahman in their art would empower them with the ability to influence the very source of their art.
Two other Ragas, that bring out the joy of the spring season, are Basant and Bahaar. In Raag Bahaar, one can actually visualise a flower blooming in gaiety through the notes "Ni Pa Ma Pa Ga Ma Dha Ni Sa°". Raag Basant gives a contrast to the celebratory mood of Bahaar, by bringing out the pangs of separation at watching the spring season unfold it's various phenomena while your beloved is not around to enjoy the season with you, through phrases like "Ma Dha Re° Sa° , Ni Sa° Ni Dha Pa, Ma Ni Dha Ma Ga, Ma Ga Re Sa". A combination of these two moods in Raag Basant Bahaar, which contrast the moods of happiness and sadness during this youthful phase of nature. This makes these Ragas very much a part of popular culture, prevalent in the film songs that depict scenes of these seasons, as well as in folk music, bringing out the essence of raw emotion at the onset of these seasons.
