Honestly I think hsmtmts s1 started with very typical idea of Ricky and nini being the boy/girl next door, Childhood friends that date kind of thing. With Gina and ej being the mean, scheming counterparts. It was so obvious from the posters and their costumes. But I guess none of the writers anticipated what a force sofia Wylie would turn out to be. She has a presence that just demands attention. She's the best actress of them all, best Dancer and her chemistry with Joshua is on another level. Plus the character of Gina turned out to have fascinating layers. All this combination outshined nini. Nini and Ricky were originally supposed to be main characters and though Ricky stayed a main character throughout the show, nini, never felt like a main character to me, even in season 1. She was sweet and good and had a straightforward arc that wasn't nearly as interesting as other characters. Plus she had no flaws. Ricky had issues, he had flaws that made him interesting. Same with Gina and ej.
And I feel the same with rini. They were sweet but kinda bland. Portwell were much better, interesting and deserved better treatment from the writers. And rina is rina. Sizzling chemistry. Best ship.
This is no hate to olivia, my problem is with nini. Honestly I completely forgot she was part of this show in season 3 until she showed up in last episode.
I had this in my drafts and I remember responding to it but forgot to post it.
I think the show marketed themselves as very typical Disney in the way that you could kind of tell what narrative archetypes the original core 4 were supposed to be, especially if you relate it to the movies. Nini as the girl next door with so much talent but didnât believe in herself until sheâs suddenly the star of the show. Very girl underdog narrative. Ricky as being her first love and the cute dorky guy that doesnât put effort but somehow is magically talented, plus the network promoted them as their âTroy and Gabriellaâ so the audience was supposed to believe they were their rightful successors. Even some of the posters promised that âlove triangleâ between EJ/Nini/Ricky as a relevant plot and we know that wasnât the case. And just by the posters and trailer you couldâve guessed Gina and EJ were the âantagonistsâ. But as I said, it was a marketing tactic because tropes and love triangles sell, and I was also a bit too skeptical but ended up genuinely surprised.
I definitely agree Ricky and Niniâs romance was very bland and I was not rooting for them at all even on Season 1. I found them so cringy, very Disney cooking cutter and they were clearly not right for each other. I was attracted to Ginaâs arc from the start so imagine my surprise when she went the opposite direction of what she was marketed as and then developed a way more interesting character arc. However, I do think the show failed Nini because she couldâve been more interesting. I liked her but I agree her arc was too straightforward and a bit too boring at times only saved by Oliviaâs voice but thereâs a lot of people that still donât get her arc at all, which is why they still ship her with Ricky even if it was literally against Niniâs character growth.
Funny enough, when I watched 105 I ended up feeling like Ricky and Gina had so much potential and their chemistry was interesting but I wasnât sure if the show was going to follow that up because it wasnât very Disney like. Very rare do Disney shows follow the second lead romance pipeline. And I am so glad I was wrong because Ricky and Gina elevated the show by having them develop a very tension filled arc and it did felt very much 00âs coded so I ended Season 1 feeling like they had to go there at one point because it would be a wasted potential. By Season 2, I was sure they were endgame. No questions or doubts. The narrative made it very known and I never doubted that for a moment.
So, PW was just as bland to me, the narrative was forcing them badly with obvious and cringe dialogue. It lacked subtlety, it was very much in your face. As if they wanted you to ship them so hard and were overdoing it. But not even in a good way â there was not care or thought put into their scenes. The music, the implications. It was not done in a way that screamed endgame. And them also being a thing when Ricky and Gina were not speaking was a plot device to keep the endgame in the wonât they/will they situation-ship. I still believe it was a mistake to put them together because it was clear it wasn't going to last and their dynamic worked best as platonic. EJ worked better when he wasnât put into a situation to be Ginaâs plot device. PW was a mid-game ship and was treated as such. The narrative wasnât hiding it. It was there for Gina to experience her first relationship before she gets with Ricky since their build in narrative has always been about second chances, the right timing and opportunities. I think they deserved a better closure on Season 3, but I am glad they eventually got it on Season 4. However, they were always meant to be a plot device and I didnât expect anything else from it. The people convinced they were endgame clearly didn't want to see the show for what it was saying.
Rina just had the it factor to me. It was very reminiscent of the old ships in which their story line wasnât too straightforward and it was told by the parallels and foreshadowing which is a huge factor as to why Ricky and Gina had such compelling arcs individually and together. Ricky being the stability Gina needs and Gina being the person that pushes Ricky forward by taking him out of his comfort zone. They give each other what the other needs and wants. Thatâs what their storyline has been about since Season 1 and nothing compares to their chemistry. It was undeniable since the start even when some people wanted to deny it.

start of something new â ricky bowen
whatâs worse: accidentally auditioning for a play you didnât want to be in, or falling in love with the lead actor in it?
warnings: fluff
⥠⥠⥠âĄ
Itâs not that you hated school musicals, but you hated High School Musical. You never understood how they could break out into song and dance, or how everyone knows the choreography, or why Troy is so indecisive, or why Gabriella keeps having to leave somewhere every movie. The whole concept of that movie was so odd to you.
Nonetheless, you had to watch those movies for your friends, constantly. Youâre best friends, Nini and Kourtney, became part of the cast and crew for your high schoolâs own production of the show. While they begged you to come along and audition for one of the parts or to help with costumes, you always said no. You did, however, help Kourtney buy fabrics and play the piano for Nini when she practiced her songs. You didnât have any creativity in you to try and actually design costumes, and you definitely didnât want to sing in front of a bunch of kids you barely notice in a school day. The only other kid you knew there was EJ Caswell, Niniâs boyfriend, and Ricky Bowen, Niniâs gorgeous ex-boyfriend.
You and Ricky were lab partners for chemistry class. He usually didnât get the lecture and would always ask you for help with the class work or homework, but he was really sweet and funny. You developed a small crush for him a long time ago, but you never told anyone. Nini and Ricky began to date sophomore year, so out of respect for your best friend you got over your feelings for him and became more than happy for the two. They only dated for a month, ending on good terms after realizing they didnât like each other in that way, but as friends only. Nini soon found EJ, you couldnât deny developing those feelings again for Ricky. But you wouldnât break girl code with Nini, so you shut out your crush once more.
âCome on, Y/N. Just come with us and you can see how fun it is.â Kourtney begged, using both arms to drag you across the halls and in front of the theatre door.
Nini was behind you, pushing your back tiredly. âYouâre going to have so much fun! Maybe we can get you a part!â
âAs what? The trash can?â You screamed, fighting back at your two friends. âI donât want to spend my after school still at school! And Kourtney I swear if you keep digging your nails into my arm I will kick you.â
âTry me.â Kourtney warned.
You let out a loud whine and finally pull Kourtneyâs strong grip on your arms out. You fixed your scrunched up sleeves on your sweater and held up your hands in defeat, hoping they would stop pushing and dragging you.
âIâll go one time, and if I hate it then you both owe me.â You gave in.
They squealed in joy and grabbed at your arm again, rushing you both into the doors to the theatre. Nini opened the door so Kourtney can push you in. However, they didnât realize that someone inside was already by the door. You were roughly pushed into a hard body, causing you both to fall. You landed on top of them, and heard a loud groan in pain. It took you a minute to get past your instant headache so you could look up and see who it was.
âY/N, are you ok-oh no.â You heard Nini worry.
You placed your hands on both sides of the body you fell on and pushed yourself up, at the same time, feeling their hands at your waist. You were met with Ricky. His face was extremely close to you, so much so that your noses touched.
âI guess I can say that you fell for me, huh?â Ricky joked, pain clear in his voice.
âSorry about that, Ricky. My friends are absolutely crazy.â You apologized.
You got up from the floor, offering a hand to Ricky. He took your offer, nearly pulling you onto the ground again with his strength. He rubbed the back of his head to where he landed.
âItâs fine, thereâs no way I can be mad at you anyways.â He smiled. âAre you ok?â He moved his hand to the back of your head, rubbing in circular motions to soothe the pain.
You closed your eyes in peace, earning a chuckle from Ricky, âYeah, I should be fine.â
âIâm really sorry, Y/N.â Kourtney yelled, running to you with Nini trailing behind her. âIâm also really sorry about that, Ricky.â
âAll good, as long as Y/Nâs fine then Iâll be ok.â Ricky said, looking at you with a grin. You shot him a quick smile. You looked back at your friends who gave you a confused, yet cheeky glance. You eyed them to stop making them act weird about you two.
âWeâre going to go, I have to help Kourtney dress up Nini as Gabriella. See you around, sorry about falling on you again.â You rushed, dragging your best friends away from the now baffled Ricky.
You brought them to the costume rack that held all of the clothes you remember seeing Kourtney designing. The theatre was almost full, but everyoneâs attention was mainly set on Carlos teaching them about the first dance number. You tried your best to hide yourself from Ricky, who you were afraid you would be foolish in front of again. Your two friends glanced at each other in confusion as to why you were being so nervous. They noticed you fiddling with your phone, almost dropping it as you grabbed it from your back pocket.
âWhatâs wrong, Y/N?â Kourtney asked, giggling at your panicking.
âI totally embarrassed myself in front of Ricky!â You whined.
Nini smirked at you, âSo you do like Ricky.â
Your eyes widened in fear, and you were at a loss for words. You couldnât just tell your best friend that you may or may not like her ex, especially after you told yourself you wouldnât like him again.
âNo, youâre crazy.â You denied, massaging your head from the pain earlier.
âY/N, tell me the truth. Do you like Ricky? Because I wonât get mad if you do.â She replied, holding onto your shoulders.
You let out a sigh in defeat, rubbing your temples, âI didnât want to, I fought with myself to try and get rid of that thought of him for you. Iâm the worst friend ever.â
âHey, donât ever think that. Look, I have EJ now, and weâre really happy together. And Ricky and I are friends. So if you like Ricky, then Iâll be happy for you. Besides, I always did think of you two together at one point when we were in middle school.â Nini smiled, bringing you into a tight hug.
âBut isnât that weird to date your best friendâs ex boyfriend? Like thatâs just wrong.â You argued.
âRicky and I were just confused sophomores trying to figure out if we really did like each other or if listening to those stupid fortune tellers was a good idea. You could barely call that a relationship. I want you to be happy, Y/N. And if itâs with Ricky then let it be with Ricky.â
âThank you, but Iâm not going to try and ask out Ricky.â You said, looking down at your phone.
âWhy not? You know how those boys are, if you donât do anything then nothing will happen.â Kourtney argued.
âThen I guess nothing will happen, itâs just a crush. Iâll get over it in like a week.â You lied, stuffing your hands in the back pockets of your jeans.
You heard the squeak of the theatre door opening, revealing the drama teacher, Miss Jenn. You had never formally met her, but you always heard great things about her from Kourtney and Nini. Apparently she was an extra from the original movie, but you wouldnât know.
She strutted into the room confidently, holding a large stack of papers stapled together that you assumed was the script for the musical. She walked up to Ricky and began talking to him, so you turned away. You didnât want to seem like you were staring, although her voice was loud enough for you to hear across the school.
âIs Ashlyn here? Ricky needs help learning âStart of Something New.ââ Miss Jenn asked loudly, causing everyone to avert their attention to the two. You saw Rickyâs uncomfortable face, making you giggle to yourself.
âAshlyn has a dentist appointment today, she wonât make it.â EJ answered.
âWhat about Seb?â
âHeâs learning choreography with Carlos.â Gina replied.
âDoes anyone else know how to play the piano?â Miss Jenn helplessly looked around for anyone who knew.
You now regretted coming with your friends to their rehearsal, because you knew exactly what was coming up next.
Nini and Kourtney jumped up, raising their hands and screaming for Miss Jennâs attention. They furiously pointed at you, and you hid your face in your hands so no one would see you.
âY/N knows how to play the piano! Sheâs so amazing at it!â Nini exclaimed, pushing you towards the teacher.
âIs this true?â She pondered, removing your hands from your face.
âIâm not that good.â You answered, shaking your head. You couldnât help but look at Ricky who gave you a small grin.
âSheâs lying. She learned how to play Mozartâs pieces when she was in the second grade!â Nini and Kourtney held your shoulders as they continued to talk about you. âAnd she has a beautiful voice.â
Miss Jenn raised her eyebrows at their claims of you, and she pointed to Ricky as if she were asking you to help him.
You tried to defend yourself, âI can play a little, but I donât sing.â
âLiar.â Kourtney blurted out.
You let out a large exhale, closing your eyes and rolling your head back to the ceiling. Why did you have to have such supportive friends? You looked back down and opened your eyes, nodding to Miss Jenn and walking with Ricky to the piano. As you both walked together, you could hear the screeching from your best friends.
âApologies for having to work with me, you didnât seem to excited.â Ricky said nervously.
He pulled the piano bench back for the two of you, ushering you to sit down first. You sat down and waved your hands, âNo, I didnât mean it like that. Iâm just not that confident about playing in front of a lot of people. Theatre isnât really my thing.â
âI didnât think it was mine too, but you might be surprised once you get involved in it.â He chimed.
You looked down at your hands and smiled, feeling heat rise to your cheeks. You cracked your knuckles and your neck aimlessly, something you tend to do before playing. Ricky laughed at your actions, attempting to do the same.
âHave you warmed up?â You questioned, quickly playing different scales to get you ready to read the music he placed in front of you.
âYeah, Iâm all set. Do you know this song?â He asked, turning the page to show the music, which so happened to be the only song you liked from the movie. You quickly skimmed over the notes, playing along small parts.
âThis is the only thing I like from that movie.â You confessed, quickly learning the music.
âYou didnât like the movie?â
âNope, now focus, you need to learn this song for your play.â You laughed, nudging his shoulders.
Ricky chuckled, and watched as your fingers glides across the keys seamlessly. He was amazed at how beautifully you played the piano, learning and playing the song at the same time. You took a small glimpse at Ricky, smiling and gesturing your head to the music sheets.
âLiving in my own world, didnât understand
that anything can happen, when you take a chance.â
He sang, looking at you for approval. You nodded at him and eyed him to keep singing.
âCan you sing Gabriellaâs part? Niniâs busy right now and they sound really proud of your voice, although you donât seem to be.â He smiled politely.
âI canât sing.â You denied.
âThatâs a lie, because I remember I accidentally walked in on you freshman year playing and singing to Adele. You were right here, alone, and singing your heart out.â Josh countered.
Your eyebrows furrowed as you slightly tilted your head, âStalker, much?â You giggled.
Rickyâs face instantly grew red as he realized what he confessed to. His hand went to scratch the back of his neck. âYeah, that does sound pretty stalker-ish, my bad. But I know you can sing, plus you owe me one for falling on me. So start at the chorus.â
You laughed, gazing at the music before reaching for the keys and building up the song from the verse to the chorus. You cleared your throat, getting your voice ready to sing with Ricky.
âThis could be the start of something new
It feels so right to be here with you, oh.
And now, lookin' in your eyes
I feel in my heart the start of something new.â
You let the notes from the piano ring out, allowing you to take in your small duet. You stared down at your hands, biting your lip to hold back the smile forming. You gazed up at Ricky, who already stared down at you. He had an adoring smile, breathing out softly.
âBeautiful.â He whispered.
You felt yourself blush, so you moved your head a little to the side to hide the flushed color forming in your cheeks. Rickyâs hand softly pushed your cheek to look back at him. He scooted next to you even more so that no space was left between you two. He hesitantly leaned in, you instinctively doing the same. Both your eyes closed as your faces grew more near.
âYou could play Kelsi!â Miss Jennâs voice erupted in your ears from the other side of the stage.
You and Ricky jumped at her scream, bumping your foreheads together. You both let out a soft laugh from the moment. He mumbled âsorryâ to you as he rubbed your arm soothingly. Then the clicking of Miss Jennâs heels rushing towards you burned your ears.
You turned around in your seat so you could face her. The moment she was up to you, she grabbed your shoulders, bringing you up from the bench and shook you.
âYou would play a perfect Kelsi! You have such an amazing voice, and no one auditioned for her.â Miss Jenn screamed excitedly. Nini and Kourtney popped their heads up from behind the costume rack giving you a thumbs up. âPlease say you will take her part. We would love to have a talent like you in our production.â
âIâm not sure if I can do that. Iâve never even talked in front of my class.â You acknowledged, pulling Miss Jennâs hands from your shoulders as politely as you could.
Ricky stood up from the bench and next to you, placing his arm on your lower back. âYou know, Iâve never thought about being in a play either, and now Iâm playing Troy. You should give it a shot.â
You smiled up at Ricky, almost saying yes on the spot as you knew you got to be with him more.
âJust think about it, alright sweetheart?â Miss Jenn asked sweetly. You nodded your head and she walked back to Carlos.
Nini and Kourtney called your name repeatedly, waving you to come over to them. You looked back at Ricky, who noticed them as well. He pulled your arm so you could stand closer to him.
âBefore you go, I wanted to ask if you were free tomorrow. I want to hang out more together.â He spoke lowly, hoping no one around you would listen.
âThat would be nice.â You respond, sending a smile before walking back to your friends.
Once you reached the front of the costume rack, they both popped out from between the costumes, climbing through the rack and in front of you. They jumped up excitedly as they heard the offer from their teacher.
âAre you going to say yes?â Nini held your hands, giving you a hopeful smile.
âYou know I can barely sing in front of you guys. Now Iâll have to sing and play the piano in front of the whole school and more?â You complained.
Kourtney eyed you, âDo you really want to spend the rest of your high school years doing nothing? Have you ever even joined a club?â
âI joined marching band freshman year, that was fun.â You replied, scrunching your nose up at the memory.
âYou played the clarinet for half a year because some flute player threatened to fight you after she thought you hooked up with her boyfriend. Have you done anything else that hasnât almost gotten you killed?â Kourtney sassed.
You gave a large sigh, scratching the back of your head. If you were to join the play, you could be with your best friends even longer than usual, but you would have to sing in front of a bunch of people. But your friends were still right, you should put yourself out there and do something, besides almost getting into fights with jealous flute players.
âIâll do it, but donât expect this to be a regular thing.â You warned.
Kourtney and Nini screamed in excitement, pulling you into a group hug. They started to jump up and down, gaining looks from the other theatre kids. Nini was the first to pull away, bringing you in front of her.
âNow letâs talk about that moment you and Ricky had right now!â She squealed.
You pinched your nose in embarrassment, âI thought no one saw that.â
âGirl, everyone couldnât help but watch you two.â Kourtney giggled.
âCan we save this conversation for later? I want to go home now and finish my work so I can sleep in earlier.â
âWeâll make it quick!â Nini exclaimed.
âDid he tell you anything?â Kourtney wondered enthusiastically.
âHe told me he wanted to hang out tomorrow.â Kourtney and Nini awed at his invitation.
âIâm so happy for you, Y/N. Now go home and do your homework, weâll facetime you later.â Nini brought you into a warm hug. You smiled at her and went to hug Kourtney too before you grabbed your backpack and left the auditorium.
âąâŁ âąâŁ
You closed your laptop after finishing your essay for english. You lazily cleaned up your desk of all your school supplies. You had just finished calling Kourtney and Nini again after explaining the details of what happened with Ricky. The night was still young, enough for you to put in a little practice time. Might as well get ready for the play.
You yawned, stretching your arms and back once you stood up from your chair that you had been sitting at for more than two hours. You moved to the other corner of your room where your keyboard was. It was placed right next to your balcony door, which was purposely there so you could play while looking out at the nature below you, or the tree that covered your view. You closed the curtains, though, you didnât want anyone to watch you in your room late at night.
You sat back down, cracking your back again of the discomfort from earlier. The sheet music Miss Jenn has given you before you left was already on the stand: âWhat Iâve Been Looking For.â
âThis song is weird.â You mumbled to yourself.
You spent the next 15 minutes playing along to the music. It didnât take long for you to master it. Curiosity overtook you; what would it be like if you sang it?
âItâs hard to believe
that I couldnât see,
you were always there beside me-â
The sound of a tiny pebble hitting your balcony window startled you. You stopped playing, listening closer for a few seconds to see if you were crazy. You shook it off, playing the notes again. You were disrupted again by another rock. Now you were sure someone was there.
You stood up and hastily walked to the glass door. You unveiled the curtain, but you didnât see anyone through the glass. You unlocked the door and slid it open. No one was on the streets or the sidewalks.
âY/N!â Someone from directly below the balcony whispered loudly.
You look over and see none other than Ricky Bowen. You sighed in relief, happy that it wasnât a robber. His guitar was strapped behind him and he had the biggest smile on his face.
âAre you crazy? What are you doing here so late?â You whispered, smiling at how insane he was.
âI couldnât wait until tomorrow to see you. Can I come up?â He asked.
âHow? I canât let you in through the front door, my parents will see you.â
âI can climb trees too, you know.â He laughed.
You smiled while nodding. He instantly started to climb the tree that stood tall enough to reach you. It didnât take him long until he stood in front of you. You felt instant dĂ©jĂ vu when you remember how similar this moment was to the original High School Musical.
âI couldnât think of something original to do without disrupting your parents, so I saw you had a tree and decided to be totally cliche instead.â Ricky laughed.
âYou missed me that much, huh?â You teased.
He stepped directly in front of you, âYou have no idea.â
You giggled, leaning up to his face. He smiled widely at you, staring between your eyes and your lips. You inched closer to his lips, Ricky doing the same. Why not tease him a bit first? You moved your head to the side of his and kissed his cheek.
Ricky rolled his eyes playfully, then gasped. You raised an eyebrow, wondering what sparked in his brain. His hand reached inside his denim jacket and pulled out a singular red rose. Your heart melted at the gesture. You took the flower and held it to your chest.
You grabbed Rickyâs hand and led him to the inside of your room. He looked around interestingly at the inside.
âWhat?â You laughed.
âYour room is nice. I hope I can be on here more often.â He sent you a wink.
He witnessed the music on your piano, making him smile. It didnât take long until he also noticed the guitar hidden behind one of your dressers. He took off his own guitar that was still strapped behind him and set it down next to your bed.
âI didnât know you played.â Ricky pointed to your hidden instrument and picked it up.
You smiled as he saw it, âNot as much as you do, I barely know how to play it anymore.â You took it way from his hands and set it next by your nightstand.
You sat down in the center of your bed cross-legged. You patted the empty space in front of you for Ricky to sit. He gladly sat down next to you.
âI came here for a reason, and itâs because I wanted to sing you something.â He picked up his guitar again and put it on his lap. âIâll try and sing quietly.â
You clapped your hands excitedly. Ricky blushed as you watched him fumble with his fingers, feeling more nervous to play in front of you.
âWhen weâre underneath the lights
my heartâs no longer broken.
For a moment,
just for a moment.
When weâre singinâ side by side
thereâs so much left unspoken.
For a moment,
just for a moment.â
Ricky strummed the remainder of the song, smiling to himself. You couldnât help but tear up at the music. He looked up as he finished playing to see your flushed face. He quickly took off the guitar and placed it beside you on your bed.
âThat was beautiful, Ricky.â You gushed.
Ricky moved in front of you, holding onto your hand. âNothing is as beautiful as you.â
Ricky placed his lips at yours, finally kissing you after hours of anticipation. He left his other hand at your neck, and you held the same hand. You kissed back hungrily, and Ricky took note of this.
He pushed you back against your headboard, his legs in between yours. You tangled your hands in his hair. Ricky placed his hands on either side of your body. You couldnât have been more happier than you were now. Everything felt so right.
âY/N? Are you ok? Are you talking to someone?â Your motherâs voice from downstairs interrupted you and Ricky.
You pushed Ricky off of your body and smoothed out your bed. He quietly got up and tried to grab his guitar, making his way to the balcony.
âYeah, Iâm fine. Iâm just watching some tv.â You yelled, motioning Ricky out the door.
You secretly opened the window, letting Ricky step out. You both silently laughed. He was about to climb back down until you grabbed his arm to pull him back to you.
You pulled from his neck down to you, reconnecting your lips. It was quick, but still gentle. He pulled away, a dazed look in his eyes. You smiled at his reaction.
âIâll see you tomorrow, beautiful.â Ricky whispered, pecking your lips once more.
âSee you tomorrow.â You waved at him before he sneakily climbed back down the tree.
You locked the door again and closed the curtain before your mother opened the door. She inspected the room, anticipating a person on your bed or hiding in your closet. She only grinned once she saw your guitar out from hiding.
âSince when did you start playing guitar again?â She wondered.
âI just really, really like the guitar a lot more now.â
A/N - this one is a more fluffy story , i really like it though lol hope u guys like it !! love yâall xx

amends pt. 4 // ricky bowen
High School Musical: The Musical: The Series - Slow Burn Ricky Bowen x Stage Manager!Reader Fic. Summary: Thatâs asking a lot of the theatre gods. Then again, it does include a lot of drama, so maybe it might just work out. pt. 1 // pt. 2 // pt. 3 // pt. 4 // pt. 5 // pt. 6 // pt. 7 // pt. 8 // pt. 8.5-ish // pt. 9 // Â unfinished
To say that you had been having a hectic week was a gross oversimplification. Ricky and Nini drama aside, the entire main cast was at each other's throats. Gina was sabotaging Nini by making the role of Gabriella an oversaturated triple threat with dances that were impossible to memorize, Ricky and EJ were trying to give each other concussions with basketballs, and at any given moment, all four of them would jump at each otherâs throats to secure the lead. Part of you was glad that you never became an actor yourself. Underhanded tricks and backstabbing blows were not things that you were eager to have on a daily basis. That doesnât stop you from being in the middle, though. Perks of being in charge! You get to deal with everyoneâs drama.
To top it all off, you had two essays due the next day, and you had only started on one.
The only one thriving was Seb, who was perfect every time you saw him - onstage and off. You tried to figure out what his secret was, but according to Carlos, there wasnât one. Perfection simply happens to âunproblematic cinnamon rollsâ naturally. What a concept.
But all shows hit stormy, turbulent waters at some point in the rehearsal process. Hopefully, it would be smooth sailing from that moment onward. You didnât think you could handle much more. Thatâs why you were so relieved when you got a text from Rickyâs friend, Big Red, asking if he could be a part of the crew. An extra pair of hands was just the thing you needed.
Turning the corner to where Carlos had said rehearsal was going to start, you almost ran into a few, wide-eyed ensemble members. It was only after you started to weave your way to the front of the group that you realized why they had looked so shaken.
Nini and EJ. Standing a few paces away from the group, a pointed space between them as they argued. Their voices were low, but any conversation that had been happening in the hallway had stopped as everyone listened to them with bated breath. You moved to stand next to Big Red, vowing to talk to him after you finished listening to what happened between Nini and EJ. In your defense, it was your job to know what was happening between your leads chemistry wise. After all, Ricky had texted you to let you know that he was going to be late to rehearsal (it was a group text to you, Carlos, and Miss Jen. Itâs not like he had any reason to text you personally. Itâs not like the two of you had been texting all week and he was the only reason you were sane or anythingâŠ). So Nini and EJ were going to have to be Troy and Gabriella, and this betrayal of trust was complicating things.
âSummerâs over.â The tension in the hallway was palpable. Niniâs face was set in harsh lines, and although you couldnât see his face, you could imagine his eyes widening in panic as his jaw worked soundlessly, trying to come up with an answer.
You turned to Seb as he pretended to be reading from his binder. He looked at you, his head never moving. âAre theyâŠ?â you whispered, trying to remain inconspicuous as Nini now faced the group. His nod was almost nonexistent, but the look in his eyes told you everything. Great. So much for clear skies and smooth sailing. You looked at how EJ looked at Nini longingly, the realization of how badly he messed up dawning on his face. Then you looked at Nini, her face solid stone while her head and heart raged within. A hurricane was coming, that much was certain.
Carlos and Natalie ran out of the room that everyone was waiting outside of, effectively disrupting the dark mood that hung in the air. You took that as your cue to start getting Big Red up to speed on where the musical was. If there was going to be a disaster, you needed all hands on deck.

âSince when was blocking like going to hell in a handbasket?â Gina chuckled slightly at your remark as you watched scene seven of your beloved musical crash and burn. Well, not the entirety of scene seven. The first part was great. The ensemble did a killer job being comically terrible at their audition. They Sharpay and Ryan audition was ridiculously good, and Ashlyn killed it as Ms. Darbus. But then it happened. Miss Jen (insisting on using the names of the characters) ushered Sharpay and Ryan offstage and called for Troy and Gabriella to enter stage left. Thatâs when it all started to go downhill.
You looked down at your notes for the scene as Miss Jen tried to work with the lovely couple onstage. Was it even worth fixing? Part of you wanted to scrap the scene entirely. I mean, sure, maybe it was worth mentioning to Nini that she needed to be more natural in her movements, but did you really need to tell her and EJ to actually look at one another when they sang? If they couldnât pretend to even be apathetic strangers, could they really transform themselves into being pretend lovers by opening night?
âNo, dear, that would be upstage.â You looked up as Big Red furrowed his brow, moving so that he could push the piano in the correct direction. Another note: make sure to teach Big Red blocking terms. Nothing would ever get done if the basics couldnât be handled.
Your phone buzzed and you tore your gaze away from the mountain of corrections you had. It was from Ricky.

(3:15 p.m.) iâm on my way. my mom got an earlier flight, got held up with family stuff.
You bit your lip as you read his text. Things were very confusing with his family, but you didnât exactly know how. There had been hints of it at auditions and when the two of you talked about meeting up to practice lines or study for math on the weekends (not that you would ever have the courage to actually get together with him), but Ricky had never explicitly told you much. Not that he had to or anything - you were just worried about him. You could tell that it bothered him. You figured that you would get there in time. Friendship takes time to grow, and personal stuff like that was usually disclosed later on.

(3:17 p.m.) weâre in the little theatre. get here as soon as you can.
Your fingers hovered over the keyboard. Should you tell him that Nini and EJ broke up? You fought with yourself; it wasnât your business to tell, but it would give a reason as to why he was needed so badly. But then again, if Ricky thought that Nini was available, wouldnât he try and pursue her again? And wouldnât that cause her to quit the show from the drama? Wouldnât that then lead to EJ dropping out too? The last thing you needed was people dropping out or calling it quits. There were only so many actors, and the last thing you needed was a change in dynamics this late in the game.
(3:18 p.m.) miss jen is about to go off the deep end.
Ricky texted back a panicked emoji and you smiled as you locked your phone. It wasnât a lie, that much you realized as you watch Miss Jen try and salvage the scene with some good, old fashioned girl talk.
Carlos turned around to look at you, a distressed look on his face. âIf we canât get this together soon, weâre going to be behind your schedule.â You sighed, flipping to the schedule at the front of your binder. You had spent hours making sure there was a time for everything. You even color-coded it.
âMaybe we could get some of the individual choreo learned outside of rehearsal time?â You gave Carlos a knowing smile. âYou and Seb still have to learn Bop to the Top.â You winked at him jokingly and he laughed, a blush growing across his face.

You and the copy machine were good friends. Especially at this point in the rehearsal process. So when Ricky said he needed to borrow someoneâs copy of scene seven, you had grabbed Miss Jenâs key off of her desk and made toward the copy machine in the teachers' lounge. Most of the teachers recognized your face in there at this point - you had been making copies for teachers since your first year as a TA for Psychology.
You grabbed the warm pages off of the copy machine and made sure to align them before stapling them in the correct order. Then you sat down at a table and (getting out your pens) started to mark down the entrances and blocking for Troy. Lord knows EJ wouldnât help Ricky - especially after what went down earlier.
You felt bad for what happened if you were being honest. EJ and Nini were never the perfect match. They both needed someone different. You just werenât sure if that someone that Nini needed was Ricky or not. They had history, sure; they also had chemistry in spades. But it takes more than that. You knew that. Love was hard.
You let your mind drift to Ricky, with his small smiles and sad eyes. You remembered how happy he used to be. All you wanted was for him to be that happy again.
A teacher walked into the lounge and pulled you from your thoughts. The scene. Ricky.
You quickly finished writing the blocking with a few additional notes and stuffed your pens in your backpack. You made a mental to-do list for when you got home as you walked back to Miss Jenâs office. You stopped outside and rose your hand to knock, but heard something inside before you could make a sound.
âMy parents are splitting up.â You knew that voice. It took everything in your power not to gasp. âFor real.â You stepped away from the door slowly, letting the voices from inside the office muffle with each step.
You werenât meant to hear that. You shouldnât have been listening in on their conversation. If he wanted to tell you he would have. But poor Ricky. It all made sense now. What he said at his audition. The snippets of conversation you heard when he and Nini fought. The reason he could be so despondent. Why he was so afraid of losing people.
You looked down at the copied scene in your hand. Rifling through your backpack to get a pencil, you wrote a note at the top corner of the last page.
