for Eithne:
"I don't think about her as much, not anymore."
relatively loosely. She views anybody who's kind to her a friend.
Rarely. Eithne disguises her grief with humour, or reminiscing on older, happier times. In reality, she needs to let it all out and grieve.
She used to write poetry. She tried to again, but it was all about her mother so she gave it up. Perhaps Margot will incite something again.
She cannot cry on command, but if she thinks too hard about her mum, something will probably happen.
Her favourite chocolate bar is a crunchie. She's never recommended it because she doesn't want anybody else to steal them from chocolate selection boxes. Also, she doesn't go around recommending chocolate very often.
If I yell 'MARGOT NEEDS YOU.' loud enough she'll quite literally fly. If Margot yells literally anything, she'll get the same result.
I was trying to think of the best way to sum this up in my answer to question 2. Eithne uses the term 'friend' very loosely, but she's strict with how deep that friendship goes. Yes, she could consider somebody a friend, but her love for them is not as nonchalant. She uses 'I love you' carefully.
She gives gentle love, but has been around tough love her whole life. Maybe that's why.
She can speak a bit of Irish. (More than me...)
'Why are you afraid of snakes?' (On a school trip to the zoo aged 9, a snake escaped from an enclosure whilst Eithne and her friends were in the reptile room. She looked down, and it was right next to her foot. Her life flashed before her eyes before the zookeeper told her it was harmless...)
Margot's attempts at Mario Kart.
At the start of the novel, a lot. She stops faking so much when people point out that feeling inconsolable about her loss is normal, and she doesn't need to hide it. She needs people to tell her it's okay to let her guard down.
A little half-hearted blow that doesn't work, followed by another one that fails, followed by standing directly over it, holding her hair back, and blowing on it for ten seconds straight.
At work she has the classic 'customer service' voice, and her English accent is more prominent. Anywhere else, she's a lot more fast talking and more Irish than English. (Born in England but raised by two Irish parents, so her accent's all over the place at times, like me but I'm less Irish.)
She definitely thinks through things to say to Vincent before she fights him. She also thinks of past customers she wishes she was ruder to but couldn't be.
Her gap in her two front teeth. Most people notice her eyes.
Margot. Margot could throw someone under a car in front of her and she'd help her hide the body.
Try and distract with a funny quip like "wow, bet you wish it was someone else, huh?" then she'd get something thrown at her.
She thinks Hugh Jackman is chill but Margot made her watch 'The Greatest Showman' and now she can't watch any of his other movies because it brings flashbacks of him in a top-hat. She loves Titanic but can't stand Leo Dicap.
Asking to be excused from a table. No, she won't do it. What is she? Five?
Going into an attic. Climbing an untrustworthy ladder into a dark, cold room filled with nostalgic items and spiderwebs? NO.
Wishing harm upon Killian. Beating her up, etc. Killian's used to it.
Of course. It was a chocolate digestive.
Female poets. Emily Dickinson especially.
Call her uncle and tell him to plead with his wife.
Her dad bought her a 'bi-fi signal' t-shirt when she first came out. It made her cringe but he looked so happy that she wears it to every pride event she attends.
She tells people she wants revenge. Really, she just wants someone to blame, and someone to listen to her.
"Yeah, sounds about right."
If she messes up at work, for example, and gives someone the wrong key or doesn't schedule them in for something, she usually doesn't feel a whole lot of guilt because they overreact over a simple mistake. When it's personal, she stresses that they'll take it to heart. She feels a lot of guilt even when they don't.
Sort of a spoiler here, but she feels a lot of guilt when she realises that if she was in Vincent's position, she would want the same things too. She feels guilt when she realises she can be selfish.
Beeped a horn for a reason other than alerting traffic. In her defence, the person in front of her had a 'honk if you're gay' sticker.
"Oh my God, Hi!" squeaky voice, gritted teeth, crazy eyes. Or a death glare and nothing else.
"Hey," peaceful, relaxed. Comfortable.
... murder. JK JK JK. Snooping around through other's things. Regularly.
Her aunt. PFFT. Otherwise she'd be out of a job.
She's absolutely terrified of losing them, to the point she'd suffer even if she was unhappy because she doesn't want to be alone.
Once again, the poetry. The idea of someone finding the poems she wrote aged 13 with the poorly hidden lines about girls is enough to kill her.
Excluded if not wanted, but mostly so she can turn up anyway.
"Did I just fail at a handshake? Something that is possible and normal to be upset about?"
Biting her thumb nail when bored. Her mum used to do it too.
Losing a parent young. The title would be some kind of pun.
(This is all I'm going to do for now)
WEIRDLY SPECIFIC BUT HELPFUL CHARACTER BUILDING QUESTIONS
What’s the lie your character says most often?
How loosely or strictly do they use the word ‘friend’?
How often do they show their genuine emotions to others versus just the audience knowing?
What’s a hobby they used to have that they miss?
Can they cry on command? If so, what do they think about to make it happen?
What’s their favorite [insert anything] that they’ve never recommended to anyone before?
What would you (mun) yell in the middle of a crowd to find them? What would their best friend and/or romantic partner yell?
How loose is their use of the phrase ‘I love you’?
Do they give tough love or gentle love most often? Which do they prefer to receive?
What fact do they excitedly tell everyone about at every opportunity?
If someone was impersonating them, what would friends / family ask or do to tell the difference?
What’s something that makes them laugh every single time? Be specific!
When do they fake a smile? How often?
How do they put out a candle?
What’s the most obvious difference between their behavior at home, at work, at school, with friends, and when they’re alone?
What kinds of people do they have arguments with in their head?
What do they notice first in the mirror versus what most people first notice looking at them?
Who do they love truly, 100% unconditionally (if anyone)?
What would they do if stuck in a room with the person they’ve been avoiding?
Who do they like as a person but hate their work? Vice versa, whose work do they like but don’t like the person?
What common etiquette do they disagree with? Do they still follow it?
What simple activity that most people do / can do scares your character?
What do they feel guilty for that the other person(s) doesn’t / don’t even remember?
Did they take a cookie from the cookie jar? What kind of cookie was it?
What subject / topic do they know a lot about that’s completely useless to the direct plot?
How would they respond to being fired by a good boss?
What’s the worst gift they ever received? How did they respond?
What do they tell people they want? What do they actually want?
How do they respond when someone doesn’t believe them?
When they make a mistake and feel bad, does the guilt differ when it’s personal versus when it’s professional?
When do they feel the most guilt? How do they respond to it?
If they committed one petty crime / misdemeanor, what would it be? Why?
How do they greet someone they dislike / hate?
How do they greet someone they like / love?
What is the smallest, morally questionable choice they’ve made?
Who do they keep in their life for professional gain? Is it for malicious intent?
What’s a secret they haven’t told serious romantic partners and don’t plan to tell?
What hobby are they good at in private, but bad at in front of others? Why?
Would they rather be invited to an event to feel included or be excluded from an event if they were not genuinely wanted there?
How do they respond to a loose handshake? What goes through their head?
What phrases, pronunciations, or mannerisms did they pick up from someone / somewhere else?
If invited to a TED Talk, what topic would they present on? What would the title of their presentation be?
What do they commonly misinterpret because of their own upbringing / environment / biases? How do they respond when realizing the misunderstanding?
What language would be easiest for them to learn? Why?
What’s something unimportant / frivolous that they hate passionately?
Are they a listener or a talker? If they’re a listener, what makes them talk? If they’re a talker, what makes them listen?
Who have they forgotten about that remembers them very well?
Who would they say ‘yes’ to if invited to do something they abhorred / strongly didn’t want to do?
Would they eat something they find gross to be polite?
What belief / moral / personality trait do they stand by that you (mun) personally don’t agree with?
What’s a phrase they say a lot?
Do they act on their immediate emotions, or do they wait for the facts before acting?
Who would / do they believe without question?
What’s their instinct in a fight / flight / freeze / fawn situation?
What’s something they’re expected to enjoy based on their hobbies / profession that they actually dislike / hate?
If they’re scared, who do they want comfort from? Does this answer change depending on the type of fear?
What’s a simple daily activity / motion that they mess up often?
How many hobbies have they attempted to have over their lifetime? Is there a common theme?

How they sleep: on their back, arks over their chest. Like the peaceful dead.
The Weirdest dream they've had: As a Seer, they experience prophetic dreams. And thus, it'd be easier to explain the most normal dream they've had.
Do they wear designer brands: Not mortal brands. They do however prefer silks from Rhiannon's godly apparel line.
What are they afraid of: Swans [ Well, that and not being able to save the ones they love]
Which parent are they closest too: has a very close realtionship with their godly mother.

Something they'd never tell anyone: That they fear the day their relatives will demand they step up and take their fathers throne.
Something they wish everyone knew: how to follow camp safety guidelines
If defied what would their domain be: Likley would become a god of the afterlife, or decay.
Are they sure of their sexuality? Yes
Favourite genre: Romcoms
A unique ability they have: The Seer Talent is incredibily rare, even amongst those who have prophetic visions. Its so rare in fact, that the last full-blooded Seer at Camp Tara was over 200 years ago.
If there is a spider in the house, what would they do? Probabaly completley ignore it. They don't have feelings about them either way

Awww, thank you! Let me add on some of my favourite writers too :))
I fully second your recommendation of @dyrewrites, Before Deluca is probably my biggest guilty pleasure to read :)
@fortunatetragedy also has a bunch of really good stuff! A Living Machine is what I'd recommend out of their works, though Doom Metal Love Story's also great.
I've been doing a spot of beta reading for @frostedlemonwriter and I can safely say his description is amazing. Strongly recommend Eithne's Faith, it's so nice to see writing about orcs
@the-golden-comet does romance! I'm not normally a fan of romance but Peter Hart is pretty good
@illarian-rambling does lovely art as well as writing, and I dote on their characters (esp Astra)
@urnumber1star writes superhero stuff! Which is great cos I think that's super underrated.
@paeliae-occasionally has some of the coolest world building I've ever seen
Oh and special mention to @pushing500 , whose art is really really good!
I’m sick of being told that tumblr is dead and new artists/writers can’t thrive on here. This is the only website that has ever supported my work - work that is too queer, erotic, and genuinely subversive to survive the omnipresent corporate algorithm. The fact that there are people out there making posts and memes and fanart about my book blows my mind.
(Staff has done everything in their power to run this website into the ground, so I don’t want to heap uncritical praise on them of course.)

Character Introduction:
Tumblr media
Hello everyone! I've been wanting to re-do my character introductions for AWS for a while, considering my characters are significantly more developed now and many changes have been made. Anyway, in order to kick it off, we, of course, have the lovely Miss Reid. Eithne is the main character, and the book is written from her perspective. Grieving from her mother's death, she accepts an offer from Corrine, her aunt, to work as a receptionist at her hotel in London. It's here Eithne discovers the hotel is simply a front for Corrine's actual job and begs to be a part of it.
Name: Eithne Reid
Pronouns: She/Her
Sexuality: bisexual
Age/Birthday/Star sign: 20 years old. Born May 12th. Taurus.
Ethnicity: White-British, born to two Irish parents.
Appearance: 5'6. Eithne has pale, ivory skin. Her eyes are hazel, leaning more into the green shades. She has a round face shape. Her hair appears black at most times, however, the coppery undertones show through in sunlight, kind of like a black cat. It's cut to her jawline, the ends turning in towards her, with a fringe. It's typically straight, though she does curl it a lot, and occasionally she will put it in a bun. Her fashion sense is mostly dark colours, with many spots of red and burgundy. She owns many plaid skirts, thin tights, brown lipsticks, and cardigans. Her eyeliner always looks a tad wobbly, due to the constant unsteadiness of her hands. She has a gap in her front teeth, which led to some cruel teasing when she was younger. She can slot things in between the gap though, so she embraces it as a party trick now. One of her favourite qualities is her nose.
Personality: Eithne would describe herself as an ambivert. Whilst she doesn't handle parties or particularly large crowds very well, she has no problem talking to strangers or meeting new people. An aspect of her personality that is constantly referred to is her nosiness, or as she would phrase it, her curiosity. This curiosity can act as a flaw or a useful tool. She doesn't like to admit it, but she's a total hopeless romantic. She believes in true love, but her hope of finding her own is fading. She's sarcastic, and a little cheeky at times. She tends to act on her decisions without properly thinking them through, which more often than never places her in sticky situations. She hates having to rely on other people but has no hesitation in allowing others to rely on her. She has a deep fear of snakes because when she was younger, one got out on a trip to the zoo. She was the one to find it, to her dismay.
So, that's Eithne! She's messy, needs to have a long talk with a therapist asap, and I love her. I hope you guys will grow to love her too. If you ever get the chance.
Eithne-related posts will be tagged with her full name, #Eithne Reid.

Books read in July
After I read How to Find Love in a Bookshop, I searched the library’s catalogue for other titles containing “bookshop” or “bookstore”. I was curled up in bed with a bad cold at the time, which meant I ended up choosing a bunch of books whose covers or synopses would have, on a different day, put me off. And that worked out rather well!
But afterwards I felt like I didn’t get the right balance between contemporary fiction and fantasy this month.
Favourite cover: Minor Mage by T. Kingfisher.
Still reading: The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert.
Next up: Mort by Terry Pratchett. Maybe The Queens of Innis Lear by Tessa Gratton.
(Longer reviews and ratings are on LibraryThing. And also Dreamwidth.)
– (they’ve taken away page breaks) –
Things a Map Won’t Show You: stories from Australia & Beyond, edited by Susan La Marca and Pam Macintyre: I borrowed this because I recognised some of the names involved. I liked bits and pieces of it but nothing really stood out. Maybe Peta Freestone’s “Milford Sound”, for the setting. According to the introduction, the stories and poems were chosen “with the curriculum in mind and for their appeal to Year Seven and Eight readers”. That’s a valid reason but I suspect that approach is unlikely to result in a collection that would really appeal to me, not me now and not even when I was a young teenager.
A Thousand Sisters: The Heroic Airwomen of the Soviet Union in World War II by Elizabeth Wein: This is AMAZING. It is aimed at young people, and I wondered if I’d find the writing style too simplistic, but it was just remarkably accessible. I knew bits about Russia’s history but this gave me a much more comprehensive understanding of the culture and politics these women grew up with, and how Russia came to have three regiments of airwomen at a point in time when other countries wouldn’t let women fly into war. The rest of the book is just as fascinating and surprising. Wein knows how to tell a story.
How to Find Love in a Bookshop by Veronica Henry: This is about Emilia, who inherits her father’s bookshop in a picturesque Cotswold village, and the bookshop’s customers. It doesn’t shy away from Emilia’s grief but otherwise is very much a cosy, optimistic story in which friends are made, relationships are mended, mistakes are overcome and everything turns out all right. Which definitely has its appeal. I wanted just a few more sharp edges -- or else slightly more uncertainty -- so that everyone’s happy endings felt more realistic. (I keep brainstorming ways that could have been managed.) Although I didn’t love this book, there was a lot I liked about it.
The Masquaraders by Georgette Heyer (narrated by Ruth Sillers): This is ridiculous but still quite entertaining. Either I missed something or Heyer doesn’t really do a great job of explaining why Prudence and her brother Robin need to be in disguise, nor why they’ve decided the best way to do this is by crossdressing. The key to enjoying this book was to just roll with it. Also Prue’s romantic interest is a type Heyer writes so well: perceptive, unflappable, competent, with a sense of humour and an appreciation for level-headedness in others. Sensible people pushed into madcap adventures is something Heyer has a flair for.
The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle: It’s much more dreamlike than I was expecting, in a similar vein to Patricia A. McKillip’s fantasy. I was emotionally invested only in flickers and bursts, but I appreciated the way it plays with, and comments on, fairytales. Quests may not simply be abandoned; prophecies may not be left to rot like unpicked fruit; unicorns may go unrescued for a very long time, but not forever. The happy ending cannot come in the middle of the story.
The Bookstore by Deborah Meyler: Esme, a British scholarship student studying art history at Columbia, discovers she’s pregnant and gets a job at a quirky secondhand bookshop. I would have found some of her choices -- and the book itself -- terribly frustrating, except I really liked the bookshop and Esme’s narration. I liked her quotes and references and her enthusiasm and her observations, especially those about living in New York and about the shop -- this is a story with a vivid sense of place. Esme’s naivety and optimism is both understandable and believable, and I wanted to see her finally, properly, free of her awful boyfriend.
The “Happy Ever After Bookshop” books by Annie Darling:
The Little Bookshop of Lonely Hearts: If I hadn’t already read the second book about the Happy Ever After bookshop and liked it a lot, I probably wouldn’t have bothered reading this. The romantic interest annoyed me -- he’s not a bad match for Posy, but I’d find him infuriating in person and I didn’t want to read about him. Fortunately the book is just from Posy’s POV. I enjoyed the Britishness, and the bits about running a bookshop. I particularly liked Posy’s relationship with her younger teenaged brother, whom she has responsibility for. And I was pleased the romance bookshop stocks appropriate YA and mystery titles.
True Love at the Lonely Hearts Bookshop: I was expecting it to turn into the sort of romance which annoys me. To my delight, it did not! Verity loves her noisy family, her nosy friends, her job in a bookshop and reading romances but she believes she isn’t suited to being in a romantic relationship. She reluctantly agrees to a fake-dating situation to avoid friends trying to set her up. I loved the way this story shows Verity being an introvert, and her obvious love for Pride and Prejudice. And this has all the things I like about fake-dating without too much cringe-worthy deception.
Crazy in Love at the Lonely Hearts Bookshop: I have less in common with Nina than I do with her colleagues: she’s into make-up, tattoos and Wuthering Heights. But it was interesting seeing why she’s embraced both Wuthering Heights and her own particular style so fiercely -- she’s finding her own path, one that differs from what her conservative working class family expected. Some of the resolutions came about a bit too easily. However, I liked getting a different perspective on the bookshop, I enjoyed bits of her romance with Noah, and I share some of Nina’s fascination with the Bronte sisters.
A Winter Kiss on Rochester Mews:  Mattie runs the tearooms attached to the Happy Ever After bookshop. She is delighted about living above the bookshop, but not so impressed about her new flatmate. I’m not a fan of the crazy commercialism of Christmas, but really enjoyed reading about it here -- probably because the story recognises that not everybody loves it. And, given the weather, I was in the mood for something wintry. Other things I liked: the vivid portrayal of the challenges of working “in a customer-facing environment over Christmas”; the details about Mattie’s baking; and the intelligent commentary about romance novels and romantic relationships.
Allegra in Three Parts by Suzanne Daniel: Eleven year old Allegra lives with one grandmother, next door to the other, while her father lives in above the garage. Allegra knows her grandmothers love her, but they are very different. “Sometimes I wish they could just love me less and take what's left over and put it into liking each other a little bit more.” The initial mystery and conflict were slightly stronger than the answers and aftermath. But it’s an interesting portrayal of growing up in Sydney in the 70s, the women’s liberation movement, and of a family dealing with grief. I read it in practically one sitting.
We Rule the Night by Claire Eliza Bartlett (narrated by Chloe  Cannon): Revna’s father is a traitor. Linné’s father is a general. Revna is discovered protecting herself with illegal magic during an air-raid. Linné is discovered after three years fighting at the front disguised as a boy. They’re both sent to a new women’s Night Raiders regiment, where, if they are to survive this war, they have to learn to fly together. This is tense and captivating -- and nuanced. Magic is wondrous but also confronting, the Union is unjust but contains things worth defending, loyalties are not always predictable, difficult people can become valued friends, and not everything is neatly resolved.
The Way Past Winter by Kiran Millwood Hargrave: In the fifth year of winter, Mila and her sisters wake to find their brother has left. Sanna believes Oskar left them willingly, like their father once did, but Mila is convinced that Oskar was taken by last night’s unsettling visitors -- and is determined to rescue him. I didn’t find this as emotional and compelling as Hargrave’s previous books. I don’t know if that’s because this is a simpler narrative or because I didn’t listen to the audio book -- a good narrator adds liveliness and emotion. But Hargrave’s prose is lovely and I liked the fairytale quality this story has.
Grace After Henry by Eithne Shortall: I really enjoyed Love in Row 27, so I borrowed Shortall’s other novel. After her boyfriend dies, Grace keeps seeing him everywhere. Then she meets a man who looks unnervingly like Henry -- a long-lost relative of Henry’s she did not know about. This story is funny and touching. I didn’t expect it to be so compelling, nor make me so invested in Grace’s relationship with Henry. There’s a strong sense of history and of place -- it was interesting to read about contemporary Dublin. There are unexpected and hopeful developments in Grace’s life. But mostly, it’s just very sad.
Famous in a Small Town by Emma Mills: Sophie loves her friends, her high school’s marching band and her small town. She has an idea for how the band could raise money -- enlisting the help of a famous country singer. I liked Sophie’s deep sense of belonging and how much she cares about things. She’s very kind in a way that is realistic and realistically complicated. Her friends are very supportive, but believably so. They all have flaws and make mistakes and have their secrets. I really enjoyed this story about friendship and summer (and it was a good choice after reading something sad).
Can’t Escape Love by Alyssa Cole: I’ve tried a couple of Cole’s novels and they didn’t appeal to me -- I wouldn’t have considered this novella if I hadn't seen a positive review. It’s fun and fandom-y and diverse. Reggie contacts an old internet acquaintance after she discovers his puzzle livestreams are no longer online. I liked how it’s very clear that Reggie’s disability has a significant impact on her daily life, but has nothing to do with her current problems. And, for Gus, being autistic isn’t ever an obstacle to a relationship with Reggie. I would have liked to read more but this still satisfying.
The Orphans of Raspay, a novella in the World of the Five Gods by Lois McMaster Bujold: Penric’s ship is captured by pirates and he is thrown in a hold with a couple of young girls from Raspay. As always, I enjoyed Pen’s interactions with Desdemona. I would have enjoyed the story even more had there been more significant character interactions -- the girls aren’t quite old enough to play a very active role in escape plans but are old enough that, in terms of emotional support, they’re not very demanding. I’d like to see Pen challenged more. But this is still a solid adventure. I’m very glad that Bujold hasn’t finished telling stories about Pen and Des.
Minor Mage by T. Kingfisher (Ursula Vernon): Oliver, a twelve year old minor mage with an armadillo familiar, is sent by his village on a perilous journey to the mountains to bring back rain. There’s some dispute over whether this is a children’s book -- Vernon thought it was, her editor was adamant it wasn’t. It feelslike a children’s book to me, even when Oliver has to deal with ghuls, bandits and murderers. (There have always been children’s books which have been too dark and scary for some kids.) The tone is dryly humorous, the armadillo is a delight and I never doubted that Oliver would succeed.

it’s eithne’s birthday so here i am, gassing her up/tooting her horn/being deeply, profoundly cringe on main without apology.
anyone who has encountered me on the interwebs in the past year or so knows i am an enormous fan of hers — not just because she wrote me a masterpiece, or even because her tom/myrtle romcom is immaculate (and maybe my favourite fic of all time?), but because she is clever and a proper laugh and because she approaches this stupid strange hobby exactly as one should: both taking it seriously in all the ways one should (the text matters, especially if you hope to/intend to shred it), but also not taking oneself too seriously at all. her WIPs are frequently staggering - who else could make percy weasley/rodolphus lestrange work? - and her askbox antics are for the ages. she is as talented as she is funny and is up to no good at all times, a dynamite combination if ever i saw one. i am pleased as punch to know her and urge you to do yourself a favour and find time to read one of her excellent stories this weekend. you won’t regret it.

one year in every ten
harry potter/tom riddle explicit | 200k words and counting no major warnings apply
a decade on from the battle of hogwarts, after ten years of the wizarding world thinking it’s safe, a serial killer emerges, leaving a trail of dead women in his wake. each of the bodies bears a gruesome, encoded message for the aurors… a message which - once unscrambled - claims the dark lord has risen again. in the face of the mystery, the order of the phoenix is hastily reformed, ron is stoic, hermione is scared, ginny is getting very good at putting on a brave face, death eaters who were never caught are getting ready to crawl out of the woodwork, and the ministry of magic has plenty of secrets of its own for kingsley to worry about… all harry wants is to distract himself from a marriage falling apart at the seams. all lord voldemort wants is to get out of the horrible place between life and death. so much so that he’s willing to agree to help his old enemy solve the case. or so he claims.

subluxation
rodolphus lestrange/percy weasley mature | 10k words and counting major character death
percy grows up surrounded by a happy family; yet his belonging is not total. percy leaves his family for the ministry of magic, but the dislocation is not total. percy stays in his job once the ministry is seized by the death eaters, and his resistance is not total. percy returns to his family in the shadow of grief, so his readmittance is not total.
percy falls in love. and that is total.
Tumblr media
the war of the roses
sirius black/severus snape explicit | 7.5k words and counting no major warnings apply
a butterfly flaps its wings and sirius does not go to the department of mysteries. what follows from that twist of fate is a story about the long, destructive shadow of a schoolboy rivalry; a story about surviving, and how surviving is sometimes more difficult than dying; a story about the fragility of beauty, the gentleness of hope, and the value of choice.
it is also a love story.

note: on this page you can find some background on            where the members of the macdougal family are at now
SUMMER OF 1989. LOCH MORAR, SCOTLAND.
It was a rarity, for all of them to be together at once. It was usually just her, Tavish and Moira, together in their home, their mother’s watchful eyes following them, but on some, rare days, it was all six of them.
And it was wonderful.
They had left their parents at home --- their mother in the living, their father in his study ( as separated as they could get without filing for a divorce ) --- and ran to the lake, squealing and screaming. Tavish had been thrown over Eithne’s shoulder, and Morag’s fingers grabbed at Evander’s hair as he ran, her tiny body bobbing up and down on his shoulders. She watched her other sisters jump in the water already. A grin curled her lips.
It was so warm. She could feel a drop of sweat sliding over her spine and she shivered, ready to dive in the cold waters of the lake and find release in it. “Alright, kiddo,” she heard her brother say, dropping her on the ground, grin on his lips. “I’ll race ya. If you dare, of course.”
And she did. She nodded, slipping off her dress quickly, legs moving faster and faster and faster until they crashed through the waterline. She was underwater soon, diving before coming up with a wide grin. She had won.
The thought that her brother might have let her win didn’t even enter her mind.
They swam for what seemed hours --- and maybe they did. Morag watched Eithne and Evander swim to the other side of the lake and come back, out of breath. They lied on the shore, pointing at clouds and telling stories that had and hadn’t happened. They tossed a Quaffle, dried Moira’s tears when she stubbed her toe on a rock, fought a little, laughed a lot.
This was the summer after Seònaid’s graduation, the one before Moira’s start at Hogwarts. An important one, because of it --- one where the family welcomed back one siblings, and prepared to say goodbye to another.
It was bittersweet. Morag dreaded the end of August, the day of September first, the moment during which she’d have to hug her sister and say goodbye. She felt like it was wrong to have favourites when it came to family, but Moira was her favourite, easily. Eithne and Evander seemed untouchable, people who Morag knew but didn’t, not really. Seònaid was nice enough, but she reminded her of her father, with her absence and silence. The three of them were so much older, too, stuck in an entirely different world that mae no sense to her yet.
But Moira was her closest companion, her partner in crime, the one she linked fingers with and gossiped with under the sheets of one of their beds. Tavish came second, with his softness and ability to give her moments of silence that didn’t feel heavy.
It seemed like their family was split in different units. You had Evander and Eithne, the ones who shouldered responsibility and legacy without ever complaining. You had Seònaid, who flew through their lives as if she was a disappearing breeze, never completely present. There were Moira, Morag and Tavish, bright eyed and protected by the three siblings above them. There was her father, alone and married more to solitude than his wife.
Rosemary MacDougal was the one who oversaw it all, watching her family as if she was a goddess in the sky. Piercing eyes, controlling words, sharp nails and a warmth that sometimes burned more than it comforted. She was the glue, somehow, but also the force that drove them apart.
Morag loved them all. In that moment especially, with the summer sun shining on the lake and her sister’s laughter in her ear. In the end they were a unit together, too --- six kids, bound by the lake that they’d lived next to all their lives. She might feel more connected than one than she did the other, but they were part of her. She was their sister, they were her sisters and brothers. It was one of the things she could be sure of.
The water of the lake was wet. Sunny days would run out. Summer would turn into fall, and Moira would leave for Hogwarts. Eithne and Evander would go back to their city homes and Seònaid would move away at one point, too. Her father would bury himself in work and fight with her mother when he thought she was asleep. Tavish would cry in his pillow and not say what was wrong. Rain would fall. Night would come. And Morag would be a sister, still.

PAIMON CHARACTER BREAKDOWN PART ONE
1. How old is your character?
Paimon is twenty years old.
2. What is their relationship with their parents?
Paimon’s biological parents are Cyfrin Eurneid and Eilonwy Aster. Cyfrin and Eilonwy lived together in the South Botani village of Astarus, named for Eilonwy’s ancestral clan. Cyfrin was a well-respected dragonkeeper, leathersmith and merchant of Sanguine descent (an ethnic group descending from Ghouls, Djinns and Rakshasas); Eilonwy was the third daughter of Khan Sirius Aster, the village chief and a renowned Vampyric warrior. Paimon was the result of an illicit affair which occurred at the beginning of the Four States War. This affair caused a riotous scandal in the village and cost them an exceedingly important alliance with a neighbouring clan, whose chief wished to marry his son to Eilonwy. Paimon was adopted from Astarus at the end of the Four States War.
Cyfrin died in battle and his body was not returned to Astarus, but Paimon reconnected with her biological mother at the age of fourteen. Paimon would visit Eilonwy in the village of Astarus three times over a period of four years, writing frequent letters to her in between visits. When Paimon learned of her biological mother’s existence, she was thrilled to gain a new family member. Eilonwy did not hate her or dislike her presence, but the trauma she would come to associate with Paimon’s birth embittered Eilonwy to her quickly. Eilonwy would stop responding to Paimon’s letters when Paimon turned eighteen, which caused her to experience a significant depressive episode that demanded therapy. Eventually, Paimon was able to rationalize her emotions surrounding the situation and could come to let go of the resentment while appreciating the time she had to get to know her mother and her culture.
3. Who raised them?
Paimon’s parents are Morrigan and Lucid Abraxas. Paimon was raised by Morrigan; Lucid; her aunt Siouxsie; and both sets of her grandparents, Eamon; Eithne; Rozz; and Anja. Paimon’s grandparents were a part of her household from the very beginning, having moved in with her mothers when they became too old to care for themselves adequately. Siouxsie moved in when Paimon was a teenager, after spending six years studying and working abroad.
Morrigan is a forty-five year old Banshee tax attorney, Lucid is a forty-two year old Vampyric military veteran and social media influencer, and Siouxsie is a thirty-two year old Vampyric clinical herbalist. Morrigan is argumentative, astute, incisive, analytical, earnest and unbearably glamourous, rarely leaving the house without a hat; a pair of gloves; a full face of makeup; immaculately curled hair; and a bottle of signature perfume. On the flipside, her favourite food is kimchi instant noodles; she refuses to wear pants when she’s relaxing at home and there are no visitors expected; and she loves participating in extreme sports with Paimon and her sons. Lucid is gentle, mild-mannered, insightful, sensitive, supportive and fortitudinous, refusing to sacrifice her loves of fighting and dance to the amputations she suffered in the Four States War. She is one of the only people who can ground and calm Morrigan and she serves as the perfect foil to Morrigan’s go-getter, perfectionist nature. Siouxsie is goofy, cheeky, sarcastic, insouciant, and eccentric, a stoner through and through and the infamous bassist of the underground riot grrrl band La Femme Spit. Paimon has close, tender, trusting, and healthy relationships with her mothers and her aunt and they serve and complement her in different ways.
Morrigan considers Paimon her other right-hand woman besides Lucid. Morrigan is Paimon’s most zealous cheerleader and makes an effort to show up for everything, but at times she can project her own standards of success and merit onto Paimon without realizing it. When she finally realizes, she is often slow to apologize out of personal guilt and shame. They enjoy taking part in extreme sports together, especially luna ray surfing and extreme forest tag. Paimon considers Morrigan her mentor and consults her most often on matters regarding education, employment, finance, self-development and personal success.
Lucid and Paimon have a comparatively intense and emotional relationship. Being so similar and at the same time so different, when Lucid and Paimon don’t see eye to eye the resulting fallout is more often than not explosive or turbulent and must often be mediated by Morrigan or Siouxsie. Because of the trauma and severe injuries Lucid experienced during the Four States War and the fact that she adopted Paimon from an active warzone at the conclusion of her service, Lucid is especially protective of Paimon and can at times be overbearing or invasive in her attempts to protect her from harm. Paimon understands where this fear and anxiety comes from, but she still struggles to regulate and express her own feelings on the matter. Paimon considers Lucid her emotional confidant and Lucid is Paimon’s first port of call for her depressive episodes, life anxieties, heartbreaks and existential crises.
Paimon has always looked up to Siouxsie. To Paimon, Siouxsie is the perfect middle ground between her mothers. Siouxsie is Paimon’s general confidant and holds the key to all of Paimon’s secrets that her mothers don’t know about. She’s as spunky, sarcastic, freewheeling, insouciant and scatterbrained as she is pragmatic, knowledgeable, studious and heartfelt. Her wish is to open her own resin dispensary and perfect her own signature blends. She sells small batches of Soul Surfer, her flagship signature resin that brings euphoria; introspection; mental clarity; creativity; and enhances aura perception, through her personal website. Her favourite foods are raw marinated scorpions, french fry sandwiches on white bread, deep fried breadsticks, and spicy tortilla chips; she drinks red wine from reused plastic water bottles and soup mugs out of sheer convenience; and her favourite game to play with the kids is Crack the Egg on the trampoline because all she has to do is lie down. Paimon and Siouxsie are especially close and share an affinity for herbalism. Paimon cites Siouxsie as an inspiration for her personal style and trusts her immensely.
4. Do they have any siblings?
Paimon is one of nine transracial adoptees. She has eight younger siblings- Leandoer, a 16-year-old Vilenjak; Badriyah, a 15-year-old Kishi; Basil and Ceylon, 14-year-old twin Varkolaks; Kamariya, a 13-year-old Acheri; River, a 13-year-old Potamoi, and Himawari, an 11-year-old Onryo.
Paimon is especially close with Leandoer, Basil and Ceylon, and Himawari. If she had to choose, she would choose Leandoer as her favourite sibling. Leandoer is as nihilistic, sardonic, devil-may-care, and grizzled as he is warm, nurturing, responsible and paternal. He studies at the Aurelis National High School of Art and Design (ANHSAD) and has a small but mighty underground following as an online-based rapper named Depression Nap. Leandoer often commissions his older sister for artwork and visualizers for his releases, which she happily obliges to in his interest. River and Badriyah would be considered the problem children by any outsiders looking in, but Paimon knows better. When Leandoer was fifteen, Paimon would often follow him on his nights out just to make sure he got home safe. This habit would prove reasonable when Leandoer got in a street fight in a rougher area of their city, when Paimon intervened and blew her cover. Although angry and taken aback at first, Leandoer came to appreciate Paimon’s care for him and began inviting her out to hang out with him and meet his friends. Although they were always close, this was a turning point in their relationship which would open up Paimon to the person Leandoer really is. Paimon is Leandoer’s trusted confidant and fallback in case a night out goes awry.
5. Are there any significant social interactions that influence their character?
- The arrival of each of her siblings taught her a new lesson both as an older sister and as a person, and each arrival instilled in her a stronger sense of responsibility and purpose
- Meeting her girlfriend, her best friend and getting to know their families gave Paimon an idea of life outside of the upper class bubble and implored her to begin exploring her own understandings of class and the identities around it
6. Is your character married?
Paimon is not married yet, but wishes to marry her girlfriend one day
7. Does your character have relationships?
Paimon has a girlfriend named Dimelza. Dimelza is an eighteen-year-old Dhampir, half Elf and half Vampyr. Dimelza is a tradgoth who studies advanced clinical herbalism and dracology at Aurelis National University, two years behind Paimon. Dimelza is melancholic, romantic, heartfelt, and artistic, often inclined towards finding wonder in the macabre. In contrast to Paimon’s upbringing, Dimelza was born into poverty and grew up firmly in the lower middle class, working hard at academic excellence to earn a full ride scholarship. Paimon and Dimelza met in high school, connecting through the school’s dragon racing club. Dimelza was taken by Paimon’s charisma, confidence and humour, while Paimon was captivated by the way Dimelza looked, spoke, and thought.
They have a shared friend group comprised of Chiedza, a Guiafairo; Hideyoshi, a Kappa; Miel, a Nephelai; and Ecco, a Nokken. However, Paimon’s best friend is Vadoma, a Pyxish Wanderer who resides in the inner city. Paimon and Vadoma have been friends since childhood and have maintained regular contact despite Paimon moving to the other side of the city. Although Vadoma’s family moves around frequently both for work and to avoid persecution, they meet as frequently as they can and Paimon’s friends accept her as one of their own.
8. If a social class exists in their world, to which do they belong?
Paimon belongs in the upper class. Morrigan is a very successful attorney, her father himself an esteemed laywer, and Lucid is a decorated veteran and highly successful social media influencer with a sizable following. Together, her mothers make over $200,000 a year and Lucid’s parents own rental apartment complexes in an upscale borough of the city. Paimon attended private schools and received private tutoring up until university and her siblings are all enrolled in private institutions.
9. Does your character have any children?
Paimon does not have any children.
10. Is your character religious?
Paimon is an initiated member of both the Cult of Kali and the Cult of Hekate. Her mothers and foremothers have been raised in the Cult of Hekate and were the ones to nominate and initiate her into their sect. Paimon was elected to the Cult of Kali by Leandoer. Eithne and Anja are Paimon’s spiritual elders in the Cult of Hekate, while Guru Kali Swasti is her spiritual elder in the Cult of Kali. Paimon practices eclectic personal tantra acknowledging both Deities and celebrates the Deipnon; the Noumenia; Gamelion; Hekatombaion; Metageitnion; Bendideia; Kali Puja; Lakshmi Puja; Diwali; and Samhain every year.
