Hey, it’s Homestuck 2! Chapter 7: Distress Call From The Closet. Looks like we’re back to the Candy Kids (yay!), and while they were literally in a closet last time we saw them, that title sure sounds like a double entendre. Vriska is explicitly bisexual and Vrissy, being a troll, is presumably bisexual as well, so either Tavros is the “closeted” member of the trio, or we’re about to get the joke that Vrissy is secretly straight.

Harry Anderson is not literally in a closet, and I don’t think he’s figuratively in one, either. This is not a man trying to convince anyone he’s straight.  

1. These are good kids, I like these kids 2. I can’t believe I’m only now noticing that Vrissy capitalizes words at random, because she was half raised by Kanaya, who capitalizes every word. That’s cute.  3. Tavros is just a strictly better Jake. 

I suspect this is a panel that’ll end up as a lot of avatars. Also, Vriska, from your perspective it’s been like two hours since you came up with a plan to fight the Troll Empress that was based around the fact that Jane Crocker’s superpower is to bring people back to life. Don’t just fucking leave him there! 

EDIT: No, wait, alive Meenah was in the epilogues and I was wrong to be confused about it.

Homestuck 2 has been kind of subtly sanding down the events of the epilogues, but this is kind of a big one. Quick reminder, back in the epilogues the entire planet was engulfed in civil war between humans and trolls. It was a civilizational collapse. Candyland in the epilogues was 

Full of warships fighting constantly

Divided into Kingdoms with clearly defined borders, that were at war with each other

And full of constant battles that could be seen from miles away. 

It’s so fucked up that Aradia has trouble conceptualizing something more fucked up.

But now in Homestuck 2 everything’s kind of normal-like and Karkat is afraid Crocker might declare Martial Law, as if there’s still a more-or-less functioning society here? The hell? 

I mean, it’s not a retcon, strictly speaking, but reading the epilogues you got the sense that the world was in much worse shape than it appears to be here?

Wow, it’s middle-aged John and his ex-wife, cis-in-this-timeline Roxy! Apparently, they’re having a conversation they had in the epilogues. It’s a bit weird that Homestuck 2 links you to a page in the epilogues and asks you to re-read it when John mentions that Jane sent Jake divorce papers and Homestuck 2 retconned it so that Jane didn’t notice Jake left, but shh.  

Actually, un-shh. In the epilouges, John meets Vriska, and then Jake crashes at his place for a week, and then he goes to meet Roxy. In Homestuck 2, we follow directly from the scene when Vriska meets John and Vrissy to this scene in the course of an afternoon. My continuity, man!  

Actually, wait, this kind of shmatlzy scene from the epilogues of John learning to reconnect with his son suddenly became a million times better with the knowledge that Harry Anderson invited three fugitives to his house to lay low for a bit and has apparently become so overwhelmed by dadmotion that he’s completely forgotten about that.

I also like Harry claiming John “Roped him” into going for a drive. 

Oh wow, he have not had one of these in a while.

We’re starting to get into gay stereotype here, but I appreciate the detail that he’s a big fan of the modern Disney remakes. 

At long last, the four kids of the new cast have a scene together, something the original kids have never done. 

OH MY GOD JOHN IS PROUD OF HIS SON FOR MURDERING GAMZEE THAT’S FUCKING GREAT. LEAVE HIM A CARD UNDER THE SAFE, JOHN. EMBRACE YOUR DADSTINY 

Again, I’m glad you’re better John, but did you forget the fucking war?

Actually, you know what? It’s fine. John is actually going to do something of his own volition. I’m down with that.

Thoughts in regard to Homestuck Epilogue

Well it certainly was......something

Cant say I was too fond of the politics part. Jane pretty much acts like she does with the Crocker-Tier diadem possessing her except this is supposed to be her normal self? Kind of feel sorry for any Jane or Jake fans reading the epilouge as the story wasnt exactly.....kind to them narrative or personalitywise (though Jake does at least get a bit to himself late in the candy route)

Also dear god, we do not NEED Trump analogues when there is already an unfortunaly very present Trump is presidental office being terrible already in real life. Reading is a form of escapism for some and frankly I already get reminded enough of that bastard in real life to want to see parallels to him and his admistration in fiction. Especially when one of them is a character I didn’t think could do that

Jade and Rose kind of got nerfed for a good part of the meat route and I can’t say i am fond of that

Obama was a surprise but it IS something that Hussie would do

There was a part of me that had wanted the group to stay friends and get over their issues as they became adults which doesn’t always happen but i wanted it to

I am a HUGE sucker for found family troupes

Gamzee got more action than he really should have or I would have wanted for him

Glad (Vriska) finnally killed him, it was about time

It would have been nice to see a healthy polyamourous relationship too :(

I wish we could have gotten to see Vriska and Terezi interact

on the positives I liked Vriska and Vriska junior’s conversation (lying back on Gamzee’s corpse no less)

I liked the DaveKat and Rosemary bits and conversations

I liked the next-gen kids in the Candy route

I wanna see fanart of them

And it was pretty funny at points, Alt-Calliope and Dirk fighting for the narrative was pretty funny and so was narrative Dirk getting fed up with Dave and Karkat dancing around eachother too long and trying to match-make

alot of the meta-textual stuff i just did not fully get and reminded me why I was never interested in a literature major despite my love for reading

Overall.....I’m....not sure how to feel about it. Can’t say it is what I wanted but can’t say i completely hated it either

There probably would have been more of an emotional reaction from me had this been released back three years ago when i was still more into the homestuck fandom (the amount of investation and lengeth of time i was in it is probably equal or greater than my first big fandom of Harry Potter in my teens)
