The Return of Yesterday

(warning; angst, detailed violence from the order, nightmares, night terrors, fear, anxiety - i dont wish to trigger <3) It was deathly silent in the forest, all but for the noise of a girl running through the darkness, surrounded by the chaos of her own existence. All that could be heard was her heavy thuds and the sound of raindrops falling from the trees onto the damp woodland ground. Her face was covered with a mixture of tears and rainfall, but she was too numb to feel anything but hopeless anguish. She could still hear the screams of her mother, yelling at her to flee the oncoming Storm Troopers that were invading her defenceless village. She replayed her mother’s last words to her over and over and over in her mind, as if they had became a mantra to live her life by.

“Child, you must run. You must hide. You are what matters for the future.” her mother touched her face gently before screaming her last instructions, “Hide yourself, go! Now!”

Not an ounce of disobedience entered Eira’s mind as she fled. Her heart tore away from her mother and carried her into the night. She ran. She ran as fast as her legs could carry her, through the darkened forest. She knew where she was going to go and ran to it with pure instinct, not even thinking about her next move. She misplaced her footing in an exposed tree root and she fell with a mighty CRASH onto a log pile. She jumped back to her feet almost instantly, holding her bloodied nose and continuing to run with reckless abandon.

Eventually, she arrived at her destination. It was a cave of sorts, hidden behind walls of ivy and shrubbery and very few people knew of its existence. It was so well hidden, that nobody would ever think of it as anything but what it appeared to be. But Eira had learned at a young age not to trust appearances, for things aren’t always what they seemed.

Eira would come here most days with some of the children in the village, having discovered it several years ago with her friend Fabian. Ever since they were four years old, they played in the forest until eventually they knew it like the back of their hand. They were so familiarised with it that they could be blindfold and still be able to tell you exactly where they were. They had formed a small friendship group, with only seven of them knowing their favourite hide-out. In the innocence of childhood, they had called themselves The Star Seekers. It was their ambition to leave this planet and join the rebellion… one day. But now, that seemed like a childish fantasy. This place was their ‘hidden base’ and their sanctuary from the harshness of the world. It was only natural to return to it in her time of utmost despair.

She paced the cave, and sank into a corner with her head in her hands. Her entire body shook with fear and exhaustion. Her face was covered with sweat, mud, blood, and tears. She tried to calm her breathing and centre herself again. She needed to know what was happening to her mother; her village; her home, and she could only do so with a clear mind. Like many times before, she sat deathly still, crossed legged and eyes closed. Breathing deeply to control her erratic and wandering thoughts. Deep within… peace… inner peace.

She found it.

She reached for it.

She held it.

Silent.

And when she opened her eyes again she was there, in the room with her mother. Merely an onlooker, but she was so close she could feel the fear radiating from the woman she had loved for all eternity.

Her mother had attempted to block the door with scattered furniture and planks of wood to prevent anyone from entering, but failed. She knew nothing would prevent them from coming, and she knew they would come one day. Her plan was only to distract while Eira had time to escape. Five storm troopers blasted the door open and entered, with General Horo Dene close on their tail.

The General was a tall man, thin, with short white hair. He had a pinched face that was decorated with a sly grin. Half of his face was deathly pale, and the other half was reddened by a birthmark. If the situation was different, maybe he would have been beautiful. The General had stalked her mother as she retreated, until her back hit a firm wall. She was cornered. She had nowhere to go. And he was mere inches from her now, towering over her pitiful, weak, and trembling body. She felt sickness rising within her, but she held it.

“You know what we are here for,” he spoke smoothly, which was oddly mismatched to his harsh appearance. “Bring me the child, and you can go free. Bring me the child and the entire village will go free.”

He began to pace the room, increasing speed with each stride. Mother gulped, and swallowed her fear. When only silence greeted his words, he gave one look towards a Storm Trooper and they advanced on her. She stood tall, resolutely, unwilling to surrender any information to reveal her child’s whereabouts. The sight of her standing defiantly against armed men, reminded Eira of a mother lion shielding her cub from danger.

Purposeful. Fierce. Protective.

The Trooper advanced, and struck her hard in the face with the butt of their blaster. There was blood… so much blood. Tears streamed her face, more in retaliation from the blow rather than from the pain. The Trooper kicked her knee, sending it backwards with a loud CRACK. Her mother fell to the floor, crumpled at the feet of General Horo Dene, shaking and screaming in pain.

“Defiance will not earn you favour, I’m sure you know that. It is clear what we think of rebels, isn’t it, troops?” They all laughed, before he kicked her hard in the stomach. She cried, and he crouched to her level while giving her a look strong enough to pierce her very soul. “This is your last chance, filth. Tell me where she is or watch your entire village burn – you along with it.”

There was only silence now. Harrowing silence that seemed to last a lifetime.

Eventually, she heaved herself up a little and looked directly into Horo Denes face. She spoke with the courage of a lion now, “Fuck you, and the cruiser you rode in on.” She spat in his face, a mixture of loathing and a bloody regurgitation of spittle.”
