Which of the Shirogorov triplets was your favorite, be it to play or from a narrative perspective? (I have a suspicion, but I'd love to hear your thoughts!)

i thought i had an immediate answer to this because jake was the first concept and the one i think about the most, but as i thought about it more i'm less sure. i'll post through it under read more

jack is a bonus character that i came up with very very late after i heard about what maurice did, and i only solidified his concept about 30 minutes before recording ska 49. but i like that he is a strange and somewhat sinister person, because even someone like that was once just a baby for adults to project their dreams onto. and i like his initial role as the promise of found family made troublesomely real, a test of kc and haley's relationship and of kc's apparent motherly concern for naomi. i never really settled into jack's voice and he had no time for development, but in the end he fit well into the theme of intergenerational disappointment.

i think i wasn't assertive enough in book 1 to really make naomi work as an ace detective driving the investigation forward, but their character became clearer to me during burger on the orient express. they feel suffocated by the structure they were born into, but they do need a structure to thrive. i liked naomi more in book 2 as someone reacting to the styles of each new authority figure: overwhelmed by jordan, overreliant on haley, frustrated by kc. and i really liked playing naomi as a shattered husk in the finale. i think naomi is the one i have the clearest voice for.

jake's role as the asshole needed to change fast with the appearance of jordan and balor, so i'm glad that was also a convenient spot for him to take the spotlight (something planned from the beginning, but with no details about when or how) and develop one-on-one relationships with charlie and solo. that is when it became clear to me that jake would be way happier if he just let go of his desire to have any relationship with naomi, and that guided me to the end of ska.

as i said, jake is the one i think about the most. i will listen to shadow the hedgehog songs and make amvs in my head about jake. he has the biggest emotional outbursts and emotionally-motivated stupid behavior, and that is always the most fun to play. so i guess i have wrapped around to my initial gut answer. jake is my favorite shirogorov triplet.

what did you and solo think of pitch black?

Riddick was fucking AWESOME. He's sensitive to light and wears dark eyewear just like me!!! And not to mention trans icon Jack!!! Solo thought it was badass, but that the menstrual blood thing was weird. Well, I'm sure Jack will have an even better role in the sequel!

i cant believe eidolon playtest was actually homestuck. i cant believe the narrator gag from the beginning has become the most important thing about the story.

It would be really funny if the furby was Nikolai's eidolon, but I may be reading too much into the fact that Luke's voices for them are similar

i listened to disco 50 and i just wanted to say you did some phenomenal character work that episode, the stuff with jake, solo, and triplets was so heartbreaking. i've been anticipating the reveal of what's under jake's facade since ska 34, and it was such a great payoff. his laugh when he says "that's right, i got exactly what i wanted" was fucking brutal, as was naomi's confession. just incredibly good voice acting. thank you so much!!!!! for your kind words here is some behind the scenes info: you may recall that an early description of jake's prison mentioned "seven skeletons" in the other cells... this is an oblique reference to we are the union's "a better home", but was also part of a scrapped idea that naomi had killed jake seven times before and he kept "growing back"... the facade is the remnant of this idea

hey jake! what was your childhood like before naomi locked you away? did you two ever get along, or did she always resent you for "causing problems"?

We would compete on the swingset to see who could do a 360 first. We did moves on the slide, each with their own arbitrary style points: 300 for backflips, 200 for handstand, 400 for balancing on your head. Naomi was prone to sourpussery and I took it upon myself to cheer them up.

whats eidolon playtest disco and ska about? Ive never seen homestuck so unfortunately no point of reference for that, but I love media people say is "x but good" so Im curious

in eidolon disco, 4 teens in 1979 start a mystery solving club and end up getting drawn into a mysterious competition for unfathomable power that their whole town is secretly in on

they both lean into a small town high school setting a lot and spend a lot of time delving into characters' psychology and interpersonal drama -- compared to poprock there's definitely less of a focus on fighting. really great podcast and the second season goes some wild places
