CTS WEEK 12

For our last session on CTS, we continued discussing the meaning of a manifesto. Still, with a different perspective: "We’ll be working toward answering Question 2, which requires you to discuss design in connection with your own aspirations and the themes of CTS B." "Expand your knowledge of the connections between design, social engagement, and tradition."

When I read the theme, I remembered last week's class, where we read Dieter's manifesto " What is a good designer?" and Rule 9, which talks about the environment: Rule 9: Good design is environmentally friendly!

The class was divided into 2 parts!

Part 1: "As a group, find at least 2 examples of design practices that you can relate to the topic of social engagement. Think ‘Sustainability’, ‘Inclusivity’, ‘Community’." We chose Sociable Scape (Community and Sustainability) and LITE-UP SUSTAINABILITY NIGHT.

We picked Sociable Scape because it is a project by LaSalle students from the School of Spatial & Product Design! The project is based on innovative and functional outdoor furniture made completely from recycled materials. Besides that, their furniture has been spotted at our campus, Mc Nally!

"Through such pieces, Sociable Scape promotes creative public space usage, making it an inviting addition for both locals and tourists". ​Our presentation slide explains and shows some of Sociable Scape's furniture designs.

Our second choice was LITE-UP SUSTAINABILITY NIGHT, an annual engaging event, with games, fun activities, and exhibits, focused on the theme of Carbon-life, and reducing one’s carbon footprint.

They spread awareness about sustainability through creative activities, and in that way, it is easier for the public to learn about the importance of conserving and utilizing sustainable energy sources.

An event focused on environmental awareness.

Part 2: "As a group, find at least 2 examples of design practices that demonstrate engagement with tradition/ lineages. Design not fine art!". For the second part of the class, we individually chose our own examples. When I heard about what the second part of the class was about, I immediately thought about a Brazilian clothing brand, named Farm. I already brought this brand up during my CTS posts, but I really appreciate the meaning behind this brand's clothing design.

Farm visual identity is based on Brazil's views, of animals, nature, and food. I also mentioned that, as a Brazilian, you can recognize Farm's dresses and tops in public, because of how unique their identity is!

As I listened to my friends' presents, one of them mentioned Ang Baos, the traditional Chinese New Year red envelope. I remember Edmund giving him feedback saying that he should have looked for more interesting Ang Bao designs, which I agree with! So here are some interesting-looking Ang Baos I found!

May 31, 2021 The much awaited film Radhe – Your Most Wanted Bhai released on Eid, on May 13, and though it got record streams, the audience response was not encouraging. The majority of the critics panned the film. The film starred Salman Khan and at one point, his films were not just big money spinners but also made a section of viewers happy. Today, his films might still be making money but the word of mouth is increasingly becoming negative. Besides Radhe, even Dabangg 3 (2019) and Race 3 (2018) were not well received. Bharat (2019) received mixed response and hence, underperformed.

We asked trade experts to speak on this issue and we have documented their thoughts in this must-read, two-part series. The first part focused on what is going wrong on the part of the superstar. In this article, we would focus on the course correction and the way forward for him.

How should Salman get back in top form?

So what should be the way forward for him and what course correction is needed at his end? Trade analyst Taran Adarsh says, “I would love to see him working with filmmakers like Sanjay Leela Bhansali or S S Rajamouli. He’s in the most commanding position right now. He can pick up the phone, call the biggest of directors and tell them that ‘I want to work you’. No one would refuse with him. For a filmmaker, it’ll be a godsend opportunity to work with Salman.”

Girish Johar, producer and film business analyst, believes, “Salman completely needs to reinvent himself. He is still stuck 5-6 years behind. Meanwhile, in the pandemic, OTT jo 5 saal mein grow karna tha, woh 2 saal mein kar gaya. Audiences consumed so much of exciting content from around the world that their tastes evolved faster than normal.” He continues, “Salman needs to ensure that he gets smart content in his films. And that will come from smart and good writers and smart and contemporary directors. This will enable him to tap into the young audience which will also throng to the theatres in cities.”

Trade analyst Atul Mohan makes it clear as he says that “Salman Khan should surrender himself to the maker.” Trade expert Komal Nahta meanwhile emphasizes, “If someone says that Salman should start doing different kind of cinema, I don’t think that is the answer. People like him the way he is – cool dude, well dressed, looking handsome, romancing girls etc. He should continue doing all that. But in this kind of setup, he should have something new to offer in every film. For that, he should have a good team of writers and give them a free hand. He should get on board a worthy director. The content is going wrong and these methods can help that. And this is a minor aberration which can be corrected. It’s not like people have begun to hate him. So I don’t think there’s any need to ring alarm bells in the case of Salman’s career.”

Tiger 3: Salman ka stardom zinda hai

Thankfully, Salman Khan has a trump card in the form of Tiger 3. The first two parts were huge blockbusters and hence, the expectations from Part 3 are humongous. Komal Nahta says confidently, “100% he’ll bounce back with Tiger 3. If anybody thinks Salman is over, that’s bullsh*t! He is still looking fantastic and he knows what the audience wants. One correct script and he’ll show the world what he’s capable of.”

Taran Adarsh shares similar views while Girish Johar says, “There’s no doubt Tiger 3would be something to watch out for. At the end of the day, audiences in India are star savvy. But they also see how content is packaged. It’s not that people don’t want to see Salman. It’s just one trailer that does the trick. And from whatever we have heard of Tiger 3, it looks like a film that has a huge potential. And I said before, Salman is the biggest star that we have.”

As for Atul Mohan, he too feels that Tiger 3 can do wonders for Salman’s career, “Producer Aditya Chopra knows how to do justice to Salman’s stardom. Even with Kabhi Eid Kabhi Diwali, Salman Khan will know that he’s in safe hands as Sajid Nadiadwala had presented him so well in Kick (2014).”

Trolls might say that the career of Salman Khan is finished but of course, it’s far from truth, say experts. Atul Mohan retorts, “You can’t write off a star like Salman Khan. From the beginning, he has not cared about critics. When he experimented with Tubelight (2017), people gave thumbs down. Aap usko mauka hi nahi de rahe ho. But he can’t risks as well. And it’s not like he’s doing the same roles. He proved his worth in films like Tere Naam (2003) and Bajrangi Bhaijaan. Even in Bodyguard (2011), he played the part with innocence. In Kick, he was cunning while he essayed a simpleton in Bajrangi Bhaijaan. And in Tiger films, he’s the one man army.”

He adds, “Uski kharab films bhi Rs. 125 crore ka dhanda karke de deti hai. Dabangg 3, Tubelight and Race 3 also did Rs. 100+ crore. His stardom is unmatched. The job of a star is to get audiences to cinemas. After that, the content has to do the talking. So if his films are opening in Rs. 30-40 crore range, it means that his stardom is intact. Even if he does 1 or 2 films that are massy and yet well-made, it’ll give a lot of boost to his brand.”

Komal Nahta feels one should not take the negativity seriously, “Lot of memes were made on social media on Radhe – Your Most Wanted Bhai. But this is the time when Bollywood is on a slippery wicket; you have to accept ki yeh sab chalta rahega. It’ll take a couple of years to fizzle out. Bollywood stars are the best punching bags. This will go on, whether or not you make a hit film or a flop fare.” Even he’s in awe of how his films open to full houses on Day 1. He exclaims, “Opening mein hi Salman kaccha chaba jaate hai sab ko!”

Taran Adarsh signs off by making a plea to the superstar, “Please listen to the public mandate. Your fans would love you anyway; they would still come and watch your films. But deep down, they must be wondering why he is doing such films when he’s capable of much more.”

Riding on a high, Salman continued his domination in 2016 as well with Ali Abbas Zafar’s Sultan. Salman’s presence also got the masses on board, but the end product was disappointing and so were the lifetime collections around the Rs. 120 crore mark. But then, the Tiger returned as Salman got back to his home turf with Tiger Zinda Hai, a massive Rs. 340 crore blockbuster, thereby being the 9th for him this decade. If one goes down the history, this would probably be the highest that any star has delivered in a span of 10 years. The stage was set for him to become the first actor to have 10 blockbusters in a decade, but the route after Tiger Zinda Hai was a bit hazy and an opportunity missed.

Race 3 was probably the biggest mistake of his career this decade wherein he took the audience on a ride by sleepwalking through the film delivering a half-baked product. Despite horrendous reviews – from audience and critics alike – it did make the money with lifetime numbers around the Rs. 170 crore mark. But the film did tamper Salman’s goodwill as the word of mouth was horrible to say the least. This was followed by a noble attempt, Bharat, which went a little haywire due to the prolonged runtime, and stretched climax. The film, though a success, couldn’t scale the heights that previous two collaboration of Salman Khan and Ali Abbas Zafar did. This was followed by a formula film like Dabangg, which became his only film apart from Veer that wouldn’t touch the 1 crore footfall mark. Poetic ending we must say considering that in his decade of dominance, only his first and last release of the decade didn’t touch the Rs. 1 crore footfall mark.

2016: Rs. 300.45 crore

2017: Rs. 458.42 crore

2018: Rs. 166.40 crore

2019: Rs. 355.00 crore (expected)*

The number crunching analysis:

The numbers above speak for themselves as the RAW stardom that Salman displayed this decade is something everyone in the industry would just dream off. At the start of the decade, his merely presence took films to the blockbuster mark, however with times changing that isn’t enough and his films need to be backed by some substance. Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Sultan and Tiger Zinda Hai showed us the potential that a good film with Salman has; while Bharat showed us his ability to take an average film to the Rs. 200 crore mark. On the flip side, Race 3 and Dabangg 3 showed us that his loyal audience has the spending power to take his bad films above the Rs. 100 crore mark. His has been the star of the decade, but there needs to be some sort of introspection soon before he loses this crown to someone else (read Akshay Kumar). In terms of audience pull, no one comes close to Salman at the moment, but the time isn’t far away when audience lose their trust and refrain from watching his film after being cheated multiple times. He missed out on collection Rs 3000 crore this decade by a whisker and little better planning towards the end would have ensured him to go past the number like a breeze. He missed out on it by Rs. 37 crore (approx.) and without the CAA protests, the gap would have been even narrower as Dabangg 3 lost approx. Rs. 15 to 20 crore from its lifetime due to the turbulences. His average collection per film is as good as Aamir Khan, who did half the number of films that Salman did and the total aggregate collection this decade is almost similar to Akshay, who did twice more the films that Salman did. He managed to strike a perfect balance between quality and quantity. A film more, or may be a little better content and Rs. 3000 crore would have been a history for him. None the less, a humongous feat.

Where does Salman go from here?

Well, we have a lot about the route that Salman should choose from hereon. The best way forward for him is to do films that have some sort of content for the audience rather than the Dabanggs and Races of the world, which ride solely on his screen presence. The audience is willing to see Salman in different avatar, and the fact that his non-formula film, Bharat earned more than Dabangg 3 and Race 3 reinstates the fact that Salman should do films in the commercial space, which should not necessarily be action.

A good drama, with him in the larger than life character like Pawan from Bajrangi Bhaijaan or even Bharat from Bharat, can do wonders with the audience. He has a massive pull among the family audience, and that’s a section that is eager to watch feel-good drama’s with larger than life cause. May be a film with Sooraj Barjatya or a reunion with Kabir Khan or Ali Abbas Zafar is the way forward. That aside, Salman has a terrific success rate in the comedy genre too, and if he comes across the right comedy script with an able director, he should just jump onto the opportunity and get it on one of the Diwali’s. A humble request to Salman is to understand the fact that the audience is willing to see him in good film, and that doesn’t necessarily have to be in the action genre. The “Bhai” image is cultivated in the last 10 years, but there is large section of audience for whom he is still the simple innocent “Prem”, and he still has the ability to make them smile and cry with the innocence.

A right film, with his stardom, can set the box-office on fire and history is full of examples. A little attention to the casting and music, backed by an interesting script in any space will get Salman back in the race. Here’s hoping to see him explore different space post Radhe.
