Reblogging this with the translations since most of my followers are non-Finns! A couple of clarifications:
The TV broadcast of 1800 guests shaking hands with the president is the most watched TV broadcast of the year. Every year.
The Väinö Linna novel is a war novel called the Unknown Soldier. At least two of these adaptations are broadcast on TV on/around Independence Day.
"shit city" is a piece of graffiti on a particular wall in the city of Oulu that keeps being painted over and reappearing.
This is the generally acceptable way of saying you do want coffee (especially in certain parts of Eastern Finland).
The "torille" ("to the marketplace!") or "torilla tavataan" ("let's meet in the marketplace") phenomenon refers to people gathering in the centre of town to celebrate Finland's success (primarily in ice hockey, but also in other sports or Eurovision, for example). This phenomenon has also given rise to the national inside joke of saying "Suomi mainittu, torille" ("Finland mentioned, let's go to the marketplace") whenever Finland is mentioned or vaguely acknowledged somewhere.
