The question from the Egoist Bible vol 2 that got me thinking really was the "If I had a time machine would I go to the past or the future?"

Lorenzo going for future because the past was starving in the streets and his insistence on having fun because it has to be worth it so long as he has enough money. When is it ever enough money? Because he can not go back to the streets; he can not lose this. So the future could prove to him it Will be worth it.

Sae's response, "I don't have hopes or regrets for my past or future. Live in the now," shows that he has absolutely no excitement left about his life. He cannot muster up anything other than his neutral face because nothing matters enough to do anything except drag himself from one day to the next. What hopes and dreams should he maintain when his life is so miserable.

To Kaiser's psychological torment where all he wants in the future is salvation and the hopes that at some point he'll be free of all the demons in his head and on the field. Where the thoughts of his past have him on the ground screaming and laughing because his brain can not process the amount of abuse he faced and he's just on the soccer field trying to force himself into some mold of a person that everyone else seems to wear without struggle.

It's about the different extremes of coping with a situation so brutally toxic and suffocating it is burying the New Generation World XI teenagers alive, and the world is cheering it on with chocolates delivered to their front doors.

Ness basically said the same thing in chapter.243 -> 自分で自分の首を絞めて･･･!?!?! (Jibun de jibun no kubi o shimete..!?) – and the official translated it as “He’s squeezing his own neck!?”, so we also went with ‘Squeeze’!

Blue Lock Characters’ Ideal Types

(according to the Egoist Bible vol. 2)

I’ve lost track of my sources for these, as they’re scattered across different Twitter translations. You’ll just have to trust me on this (or not. you may look up the sources yourself to verify the info here)

Aiku - isn’t a hassle to break up with

Barou - likes to clean and can clean with him

While gathering these, I noticed that not every character gets asked what their ideal type is… Shidou, Sae, Rin all don’t have it.

It feels like the more I get to know about Shidou, the less I understand him.

I watched the anime before reading the manga, so the first time I saw Shidou was him trying to kick off Isagi's head. I didn't think much of it that time—I mean, we already had Raichi who is aggressive for no reason at all, so not a big deal to have somebody who is violent for no reason at all, right?

But then I picked up the manga and read things, saw things, re-read things which just made things muddier for me than earlier. No, it's not the same as Itoshi brothers—whenever I think that I've fully understood these brothers, they whiplash me with something that makes me go, "How did I miss this?" meanwhile lines just get blurrier in Shidou's case.

And now that the Egoist Bible Vol.2 has been released, we have so much new information about so many characters including Shidou! But unlike my expectations, I, somewhat, became more confused (about him):

This kind of answer really isn't something I could expect from him—it feels more like Karasu's or Yukimiya. I might've nearly shed a tear when I first read it, and then I re-read it again to confirm it was really his answer.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not calling him stupid or anything—he is actually quite smart—but seeing this feels strangely strange. It feels out of the blue just like when I first got to know that he last cried at the end of the day when he became nothing. Such stuffs just throw me off guard when, on a broader perspective, he is depicted as a violent, short-tempered, mischievous and foul-mouthed soccer-loving player.

Also, looking back at things, I'm quite surprised that he actually praised Kunigami first:

He seemed rather calm.

In fact, if I were to overthink and look too deeply...

...he nearly looked disappointed, and maybe even sad.

Like, we know that in his first match during the second selection, he attacked his opponent team because they weren't making him explode, so he tried igniting things by beating them up.

Then why didn't he do the same with Kunigami?

I mean, Kuni was just a slime who couldn't help him level up, right? Then why didn't he just try to crack open his skull? Kuni was able to take a hit from him earlier too, didn't he? So why not ignite him?

unfinished kunigiri from this post, was looking thru the wips i had before my google docs on my main email ran out of space and i found this! its still such a cute idea to me T___T so i tidied it up

canon compliant(?) until the last goal of the NEL is confirmed + episode nagi panel references, manga spoilers (kunigami), ambiguous relationship but with everything i write just know it's aiming at love. we also have chigiri egoist bible vol 2 references re: his hair. thanks s2e7 additional time you caused this

Sharing the training room is fine. More so when it’s with Kunigami—there’s a comfort he exudes that Chigiri thrives off of, taking care of his leg while Kunigami uses the machines, the mechanical strain of springs and panting from exertion making up background noise while Chigiri stretches. In the short time since he’s entered Blue Lock, this is one of the things that has become routine for him.

It helps, too, that Kunigami never asked Chigiri about it. It helps, too, that Kunigami had grabbed Chigiri and tucked him close, back-to-chest, after that game-tying goal against Team W. Almost like the day before, when Chigiri had spilled his guts out to Isagi; the pity, the not-understanding, but new.

How this very moment feels different: that is, Chigiri thinking, knowing, believing, that Kunigami would give him understanding. A person who could hold his leg with care. A person who could hold his leg like it was their own.

It’s clear that something shifts, inexplicable, in how Kunigami shoots him looks every time he rests between sets of exercises. Chigiri rubs ointment over part of his knee, careful around the surgery scar, thinks about how to break the news to Kunigami, or if he’ll ever ask.

After today, though, he deserves an explanation. All of Team Z do, really. Doesn’t mean he’s ready for it.

Like he can read his mind, Kunigami walks over to where Chigiri is sat on the bench, sitting beside him.

“You don’t have to share with me anything you’re not ready to,” Kunigami says, wiping his sweat with the towel around his neck. “I can wait.”

It’s his tone of voice. It has to be. It’s the warming fiery way the words curl around his mouth, something compassionate and resolute. It’s what makes the entire story spill out of Chigiri, bursting the way he does when he’s about to run at top speed, a blooming of red and raw truth.

When he’s done with it all, Kunigami looks at him, bright-eyed, almost awed. “That’s heroic of you, Chigiri.”

Chigiri can’t help a small smile. “You gotta catch up, then. Aren’t you the hero between the two of us?”

Something shifts, infinitesimal. Kunigami smiles back, a soft smile Chigiri has only seen a few times—not the wolfish grin or the roar of victory he’s become accustomed to. The headband Kunigami had given him is a constant pressure against his forehead, grounding. In return, Chigiri hands him a water bottle.

Kunigami is the easiest thing in the world to bring up, even during their two week break after the Japan U20 match, when Isagi asks him and Bachira who they invited, rather than who they wished they could invite. He’d gotten his phone back before the two week break, and spent a hot minute staring at it after realising he didn’t have Kunigami’s contact.

Wish I could have, though. Chigiri has learnt to never have regrets, not about soccer, not about his decision to keep running despite everything. Not about Kunigami.

Blue Lock. Shared times in the training rooms. Shared times trying to run away from a lovesick Reo. Shared times on the field, on the same side. Chigiri still wishes that this moment, this victory, this period of freedom, is something that they could have together, too.

It comes back to the headband, eventually. They drop back down to 4v4 in the second selection, after losing against Rin’s team. Chigiri is rubbing ointment into his leg again, stretching the muscles. He pointedly does not think about Kunigami and Reo—two of them having to fight their way back up from 2v2 portion, but the image of Kunigami comes to his mind, unbidden. 

Once, Chigiri had faced the sheer fire of Kunigami’s resolve and revelled in it. Today, he carries that burning with him the way the headband holds his hair up, gentle yet secure and reliable, like rolling up his pant leg to look at the scar on his knee. 

It’s possibly here that Chigiri is finally able to process the yearning, feeling the loss cleave through him like the tip of a surgical knife. Chigiri’s been holding the same stretch for a little too long, and—

Well. It’s not like Chigiri didn’t know he’s always harboured a fondness for Kunigami like no other. He adjusts the headband with a hand the way he imagines Kunigami would; I have two sisters, he had said, bashful in a way Chigiri still finds cute.

It would be good to tell him, perhaps.

Cynic hero, naive princess. Monikers like these have never been able to fully encapsulate what they are, much less what they are to each other, even less so with the adjectives in front of them. Chigiri watches Kunigami shoot with his right foot and the wrongness of it sinks in almost instantly.

His eyes blow wide. It’s this moment that he remembers watching the footage of Bastard Munchen against Barcha, how the one time Kunigami had scored with his hero’s left foot, he had been nothing but ashamed, disappointed, even—a goal celebration that wasn't a celebration. A display of shame. Upset. Anger. Chigiri doesn’t know what happened in Wild Card—but his chest burns with something akin to misery. How can the Kunigami he knew and the Kunigami in front of him exist together so tangibly at once?

They lose. Isagi evolves. Chigiri’s gaze lingers too long on Kunigami’s figure as he leaves, too quickly.

Once, in a bathroom, while Reo was busy stressing over what he should say to Nagi after seeing him again, Chigiri had walked past him and allowed that one moment to feel, intensely and fiercely, for what he had lost. For Kunigami, for everything he didn’t get to say, then.

No more of this, Chigiri tells himself. He asks Chris and Ego for permission to go to the Bastard Munchen stratum, and is surprised himself when he’s allowed.

That day with Reo, he’d worn his hair up in the headband Kunigami had given him months before, as if to make up for the loss. It’s not quite the same look he’s wearing today, but his hair is tied up in the way he knows Kunigami kind of likes, uncovering the nape of his neck.

It’s expected that Kunigami tries to avoid Chigiri. But he remembers the kindness he’d treated him, back in Team Z, and knows not to prod. He needs time and space, Chigiri thinks, the way I did, back then. Weeks of shared training room space, keeping to his routine of leg care, without any questions.

Kunigami deserves at least a little compassion, too.

He lets himself smile, even if Kunigami’s back is facing him; painfully reminiscent of how Chigiri had turned his back to them when he left during the second selection.

“I’ll be keeping a close eye on you, so keep a close eye on me too.” It’s not quite what Chigiri wants to say, but it’s good enough for now.

They can still be who they were. Rensuke is a creature of habit, like that.

Kunigami’s not normally restless, but his fingers have been tapping his leg for the better part of the last ten minutes, and it’s starting to get on Chigiri’s nerves a little. It’s the last thing they need before a match, and he doesn’t think before grabbing Kunigami’s hand to make it stop.

When Chigiri looks at him, Kunigami’s face is tinted with a light pink. He looks away. “What was that for?”

“You were fidgeting,” Chigiri says. “Nervous?”

There’s a teasing lilt to his voice, because Kunigami is never really nervous before a match, but surprisingly, he doesn’t reply with a teasing remark at the tip of his tongue like he normally does, instead turning away.

Chigiri’s a menace when he wants to be, so he gasps theatrically: “Kunigami! You’re nervous now?” Chigiri pauses to poke his side. “Does our hero not know how to fight the dragons?”

“Shut up,” Kunigami mutters, but there’s no bite to it. “I normally braid my sisters’ hair every morning, and I haven’t been able to do it recently, since I joined Blue Lock so I feel—I don’t know. Off-kilter?”

It gets Chigiri to quieten. They haven’t really talked about their families in Blue Lock; apart from Bachira letting it slip that his mother’s an artist and Kunigami telling Chigiri that he has two sisters, the topic doesn’t come up often because of sheer soccer immersion.

He feels for Kunigami, though. He misses his sister, too.

“You can braid my hair, if you want,” Chigiri says, pursing his lips thoughtfully. “I normally braid it before I play, anyway. No harm in having someone else do it, for a change.”

Kunigami doesn’t say anything, but the deep gratitude in his eyes speaks a million words. He separates the left side of Chigiri’s hair into three equal parts, laying each part on top of the other in a braid that’s not too tight, in confident, experienced motions.

When a person like Kunigami walks into the room, one would never think he’s capable of this gentleness: but he is, undeniably so. It’s prevalent even in the way he protects his team, in the way he cares for everyone around him. Chigiri lets Kunigami comb through his hair with his fingers, leaning into his touch, a little.

There’s a moment, where Chigiri thinks something more is going to happen. But Raichi calls for them, voice obnoxious and loud: KNOCK IT OFF, LOVEBIRDS!!! and the moment is shattered as easily as it was formed.

The final bids must be trickling in by now, Chigiri assumes. He looks at himself in the mirror, a comb in one hand, holding a rubberband in his mouth while he tries to decide on a hair length. Bunching up his hair into a ponytail at the base of his neck—too short. Chigiri lowers his hand a little bit, something nearing shoulder length, maybe, but it’s too long. Huh. This is harder than he thought.

“What are you doing?” a voice interrupts him, gruff and soft at the same time.

“Hm?” Chigiri looks at Kunigami from the corner of his eye. “I’m gonna cut my hair.” he says through the rubberband in his mouth, slightly muffled.

A flicker of brief horror appears on Kunigami’s face. He looks away, and Chigiri has to stifle a laugh at how needlessly unsure of himself he is, right now.

Chigiri removes the rubberband from his mouth and slides it onto his wrist.

“I saw that last goal you made,” he says instead, while Kunigami rinses his hands. “It was good. Congratulations on the win.”

With his hero's left foot and a chemical reaction involving him, Isagi and Ness—prodigy and genius—that is. This is the kind of Kunigami that fits best, after all; a person like him doesn't deserve to burn from a defensive position.

The water runs from the tap. Kunigami says nothing. Chigiri hums, going back to measuring his hair length. There’s a good inbetween that somehow reminds him of the length he used to keep before his ACL tear. He uses the hair tie to mark it.

Kunigami shuts off the tap, but he stays, still. He’s watching Chigiri, enraptured, hand clenching into a fist at his side.

Chigiri holds out the scissors to Kunigami. “Do you wanna help?”

It’s kind of crude, handing someone a weapon like this, but Chigiri trusts him. Kunigami hesitates before taking it. Chigiri relaxes immediately as he does.

“Just cut it above the hair tie,” Chigiri says. And then, because some things need to be said out loud: “I trust you.”

Kunigami takes the ponytail into his hand carefully, and Chigiri hears the careful snip of the large chunk of hair as Kunigami cuts through it like a thick rope. He knows when it comes off because he hears Kunigami’s hitch of breath, a bunch of long pink hair in his hand.

“I feel like I just killed something,” he says, a little dazed. Chigiri snorts. Everything feels lighter—without the pinch of the hair tie, Chigiri can feel where his hair tickles the nape of his neck. He smoothes over it, once, twice, three times.

“Now you have to help me with these,” Chigiri says, gesturing to his bangs. Kunigami is silent as he moves closer, careful movements—Chigiri closes his eyes to stop his hair from getting into his eyes.

They don't say anything. It's not that they don't need to—Chigiri's well aware of this, wants to tell Kunigami so much and everything; like that time in the gym after the match against Team W. Wanting to meet that passion and that resolve. Wanting to tell Kunigami about the shenanigans Reo and Nagi's gotten up to while he wasn't with them. Wanting to tell Kunigami about all the things Chigiri wants to do now that he's back.

But this is a chance to return the favour: the same patience that had steeped in that gym back at Team Z, the same quiet company. Chigiri hears Kunigami take a step back, and he opens his eyes.

There's a beat, before Chigiri stands up, feeling the foreign breeze of the air conditioner blow across his exposed nape. "You could use a haircut too, you know? Aren't heroes supposed to look smart and dashing all the time?" What Chigiri will not say: you used to be. What Chigiri thinks: you can still be.

Kunigami shifts his weight from one foot to the other. Makes eye contact with Chigiri—and appears satisfied with whatever he can find within. Breathes out, a heavy thing, a burdened thing.

"Yeah. You're right."

Hoshi shared translations of the titles yesterday! So to fuel some hype, here's some speculation about what each part of the light novel will focus on.

Here's an index of existing fan translations of the two published light novels. I'd recommend reading them: they're short and enjoyable. Although a lot of the content has been covered or referenced by the mangas and Egoist Bible, there's some new trivia about your faves in there too like baby Isagi being able to predict the weather 🌦️

1. Niko Ikki: "Immersion"

I'm not a Niko stan (I don't dislike him! I just have other faves), so this is the hardest entry for me to conceptualise in terms of theme or story. If anyone with a better grasp on his character would like to chip in, be my guest!

Niko has the following key character traits:

➡️ he's the youngest of the characters introduced so far;

➡️he's something of an underdog;

➡️ he enjoy a particular rivalry with Isagi, as (in Isagi's words) they have the same eyes and brain;

➡️ Niko appears to be fairly introverted, enjoying games and anime/manga; and

➡️ A defining trait is his insecurity about his forehead.

Some further thoughts on what Niko's entry might feature:

🔵 "Immersion" may refer to how Niko loses himself in football: both in terms of how he goes unnoticed by his opponents and how involved he gets in the sport. That's my best guess! I'm stumped otherwise.

🔵 I anticipate there will be some rival or potential bully Niko has to overcome, using his wits and intelligence. Maybe he has to prove himself to a dismissive school football club?

🔵 His tactic early in Blue Lock is to use more physical players (such as Oikawa and Zantetsu) to score goals for his team, acting as the playmaker. The LN may elaborate on how he developed this strategy.

🔵 The forehead thing just has to be a teenage complex around acne or something, right? I don't think it's more serious than that, given how much the writer and mangaka joke about it (see: forehead kanji on the Vol 25 manga cover).

🔵 I don't think we'll be seeing Niko spotting mosquitos across the room... but the LN will likely comment on his good vision/spacial awareness also.

2. Kunigami Rensuke: "Rule"

Kunigami's light novel will be a prequel, same as all the others. While we won't get any hints about Wild Card (🥹) it's likely we'll learn about:

🟠 How his desire to become a football superhero came to be. The main manga suggests this came from him watching footballers on TV while young.

🟠 His family. Kunigami is a middle child, with two sisters. What's their family dynamic like? Does he get on with his sisters and parents?

▶️ A theory: being the middle child and only boy is one reason Kunigami goes by the saying, "fair and square". His parents enforced that message so their three children would get along!

🟠 Explanation for his personality traits. The LN might explore the rationale for his protective nature. Perhaps Kunigami was raised with the notion of looking out for his sisters, which extends to his friends and teammates in Blue Lock.

🟠 The LN will likely show how Kunigami fared as a striker in high school. Given how good he is starting out in Blue Lock, dude must have been a beast on his school team.

Overall, I'm praying Kunigami's entry is light-hearted. Our grumpy orange goes through enough angst in canon - he deserves some happiness before coming to Blue Lock 😭 I think the odds of this are actually pretty good, because if there's an angsty entry in this volume, then that's gonna be...

🟠 Lastly, the title (Rule) likely refers to his "fair and square" motto. Kunigami lives a very regimented life in Blue Lock (eat, train, play football, train some more, shower and sleep). Perhaps the focus of the LN will be how he developed that willpower and dedication.

3. Hiori Yo: "NEW GAME"

Hiori's LN entry is the easiest one to anticipate, since chapter 206 gave a fairly detailed account of his upbringing and family life.

"NEW GAME" is likely in reference to his enjoyment of video games (how these acted as a means of escape for him) as well as how Blue Lock represented a new life away from his overbearing parents.

Here are some of my expectations (sorry Hiori 💔) for his entry:

🔵 a retelling of the events of chapter 206, focussing on Hiori's injury and his discovery of his parents' discontent.

🔵 an exploration of the impact his pushy parents had on his personality and enjoyment of sports.

🔵 backstory about Hiori and Karasu's friendship/rivalry! For example, did Karasu ever target Hiori as the "weakest link" of a team? I'd be surprised if he doesn't show up - the Wanima twins appeared in Chigiri's novel, as did Sae in Rin's.

I'd love to hear people's thoughts about this! I'm looking forward to these getting a release, even if it'll be some time before I can actually read them. The illustrations alone are a treat - in the first two volumes, these were completed by Sannomiya-sensei, the mangaka for Episode Nagi.
