Day 1 of the Hobie BOS was an absolute grind. Five bites all day and number five didn’t come until 1:58… only two minutes left in the tourney. Like ol’ @mikeiaconelli said, “Never give up!”. This past weekend I was fortunate enough to compete in the HUK BASS NATION Kayak Series tournament on pools 7,8 & 9 of the Upper Mississippi River. 123 of the best kayak anglers from accross the country participated. Grant Ellis and I traveled together and had a great time. The river and the surrounding area and communities are beautiful. The river itself was humbling, I heard of lots of fish being caught. Fishing was tough for us and we struggled to catch fish during practice and ultimately during the tournament as well. I threw the kitchen sink at the back channels and backwaters targeting largemouth but had limited success with only one keeper on the board for most of the day. Just as time was expiring I found a specific type of current that held some fish and put up three more keepers with just minutes to spare to salvage something out of the day. All my keepers came by way of an Evergreen/Z-Man Jackhammer with a Missle Bait craw trailer. I was using my Lew's Perfect Crankbait rod with a Lew's BB1 reel. I finished in 77th place and Grant bested me by one inch (I had to buy supper on the trip home) and finished in 74th. Good times fishing the KBF Trail and Pro Series on Lake Murray this weekend. Managed a 4th place finish in Trail 1, 5th place in Trail II, and 3rd place in the Pro Series. I definitely gained a lot more confidence in slinging an A-rig and using the @lowrancefishing Active Target system during the first Hobie BOS event on Toledo Bend.
