i’ve read dracula before but this time during dracula daily due to hyperfixation poisoning i’m thinking about a particular thing….the inability of vampires to withstand the wafers draws of course on a lot of legend history about how 1. getting burned by what is holy is a proof of the burned person’s taintedness, cuz those who are untainted are not burned by it. 2. sometimes overlapping (and less christian, more jewish (most familiar to me) and pagan of various kinds) that being burned by what is holy is a deliberate act of punishment for hubris or disobedience, that could have been withheld or given without burning. both these assumptions run so deep they have been incorporated into the canon lore of vampires like dracula, but also many other things.
the possibility that that which is holy will burn all things becuz holiness is a muchness and a muchness is burning intensity and the difference being in whether it is interpreted as deliberate punishment/proof of taint, or whether being burned is interpreted as inherently what intensity causes, and is a price (interpreted in various ways, like the price of a really good drink, or a ketubah, or like the yield of x heat and light per log of kindling unused for building and instead given to the fire), which, depending on the private varieties + desires + autonomy of the person, one chooses to pay, or not, or is something that is not what you want or care about in the first place, is such a tiny niche idea that i’m struggling to think of a single other example in the canon of spec-fic literature
