Coronavirus gave me the opportunity to discover my other self - Efya Songwriter, Efya has expressed that while the COVID-19 pandemic came along with many negative effects, it gave her the opportunity to discover another part of herself she never paid attention to. She explained that for someone who had been travelling in and out of the country for the past 15 years, the COVID-19 period was “the first time in a year that I hadn’t left the country in the past 15 years or so”. Speaking at the #YHavoc Twitter Spaces session hosted by YFM, Efya shared that while a lot of shows were cancelled, the COVID-19 gave her the opportunity for self-reflection. She told YFM’s Winston on the Twitter Space: “It gave me the opportunity to go into myself and discover another side of myself. It made me stronger mentally because this was the first time in a year that I hadn’t left the country in the past 15 years or so. It was a lot of self-discovery for me.” The musician added that amid all that COVID-19 brought, she is grateful for her life and all those who continue to support her as well as the personal growth she has observed. “With everything that I went through, I’m just grateful for where I am now mentally, spiritually, physically. Best of 2020: Ghana music

In 2020 I kept following new GH music closely, as usual, and hoping that there would be awesome songs that could go really far. Probably the biggest GH song of the last few years is still ‘Akwaaba’ (2018) by Guiltybeatz. And of course, Shatta Wale feature on ‘Already’ (2019) by Beyoncé was huge as well. Sadly, none of this year’s songs seemed to have that kind of impact. There were some good songs though. The most played GH songs of 2020 at our parties were most likely ‘Putuu’ by Stonebwoy, ‘Say Cheese’ by Kidi, ‘Nominate’ by Stonebwoy and ‘Fa Hooki Me’ by Sarkodie. Personally, some of my favorite artists were Fameye and Gyakie. Fameye released a pretty good album titled ‘Greater Than’ and Gyakie also released an EP titled ‘Seed’. Those two deserve more attention that they got! One of the most interesting moments in GH music was #BringBackAzonto. Or it could have been! It was spring 2020, we had lockdown, nightclubs were closed. Sarkodie released ‘Fa Hooki Me’ and people started talking about bringing back Azonto, and soon some other artists also made a few Azonto-style songs. Initially I was pretty excited about it and hoped that the ‘Azonto revival’ would become real, and that it would bring some new energy to the table. Sadly, it didn’t go far. Maybe the songs were not that good, maybe it was not pushed seriously. Will there be another opportunity for a real Azonto revival in the future? I hope so, because that sound was original. But it needs to be done well. There were a couple of other ‘retro’ moments too. Lord Paper and Bosom P-Yung released a ‘borga highlife’ style song ‘Asabone’ and it seemed to be popular in GH, at least for a moment. The beat was sampled from Daddy Lumba. Then there was also #BehindDaHitz: Instagram 'battles’ between producers like Appietus, Da Hammer and Jay Q. They went through their massive catalogue of tunes, which include some forgotten GH hiplife and GH hip hop classics. DJ Breezy also released a song titled ‘Vintage Flow’ featuring Tinny and others. That song was dope but seemed to go under the radar. 2020 was also the year of ‘Kumerica’ and the rise of GH drill. The good thing about is that they are rapping in their own languages. Best of 2019: Ghana music

I’ll start my traditional “end-of-year” lists by listing the Ghanaian songs that were most relevant to me in 2019. I try to make all these lists based on how much I played the songs, what kind of impact they had and how much I liked them personally. Comparing 2019 to two previous years in GH music, I think there was a lack of real catchy, standout hit songs and club bangers that would make waves outside Ghana as well. In 2018, there was the club banger “Akwaaba” and also a few other big songs like “Do The Dance” and “Adiepena” - the songs that came out this year don’t really match those. The closest to “Akwaaba” was probably “Omo Ada” by Medikal, produced by Unkle Beatz. However, the biggest song featuring a GH artist was Beyoncé’s track “Already” which featured Shatta Wale. It would be on the top of my list if it counted as a Ghanaian song. The funny song of the year was “Daavi Neba” with Patapaa’s “Skopatumana”-verse. There were a few new names that got my attention in 2019: Fameye, J. Derobie and also Gyakie. 2018 Ghana Music Awards UK: Ebony Reigns tops with 7 nods, Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy ties with 4 nods; see full list of nominees

Ebony Reigns has landed yet another posthumous awards nominations and this time, it's the 2018 Ghana Music Awards UK.

Late Afro-Dancehall musician Priscilla Opoku-Kwarteng, known in the showbiz circles as Ebony Reigns, has landed yet another posthumous awards nominations.

The "Poison" hitmaker who won the 2018 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards' "Artiste of the Year" award posthumously has yet again been nominated for another awards at this year's Ghana Music Awards UK.

She topped topped this year's nominations list with 7 including the "Best New Artiste", "Song of the Year" and "Artiste of the Year" awards.

Ebony is closely followed by KiDi with 6 nods. Kuami Eugene, Stonebwoy and Shatta Wale tied with 4 nominations.

Many of these celebrities have tried to make a comeback, but they are not actually accomplishing anything significant for the industry. When a celebrity hasn’t starred in an award-winning TV show or movie for a while or produced any good music, Ghanaians tend to forget about that celeb.

Even if the famous person tries to make a comeback, many entertainment bloggers would say that that star is only hanging around, but not actually accomplishing anything significant for the industry. Of course, it can be very difficult for a celebrity who was once an A-lister to come to the realization that they are not as famous as before. Many are therefore forced to do some crazy things just to get attention from the entertainment industry and former fans. But the thing is: they are just not going to make it like they used to.

Asem

Asem jumped on the music scene in 2007 with his famous hit track “Give Me Blow” produced by Richie of Lynx Entertainment. His style of rap was so appealing that he got the attention of many young people in the country and featured on many songs.However, his fame came to an abrupt end shortly after his controversial rape saga. He has since tried a comeback but it seems not to be working.

Irene Logan Her first major hit single was “Runaway” which featured Asem. She had before then won the maiden edition of “Stars of the Future” and recorded a joint album with second runner-up, Jane (now Efya). But after leaving Lynx Entertainment, Irene does not appear to be doing so well as her colleague, Efya in the music scene.

Eugene (Choirmaster)

Following the breakup of the group, Praye some four years ago, the leader and most visible member of the group Eugene Baah Boadu aka Choirmaster has struggled as a solo artist. He released songs like “Pull Him Down”, “Ghana’s Most Beautiful” and has also tried a couple of unsuccessful collaborations.

The ‘Makola kwakwe’ hitmaker was a trailblazer in his day with his stunning litany of songs and mastery of the stage. Then followed the dark days of anonymity. He has tried to stay relevant with a couple of decent songs but it is all too obvious his best days are behind him

The original boy wonder of Ghanaian hip hop. It seemed every song the Labone Sec alumni dropped was a chart topper. His unwillingness to adapt to the new generation has seen him fade into near obscurity.

The biggest music star in this country of the last decade has had a pretty tough couple of years. The emergence of several talents in the dancehall genre scene has affected his shine and where he was once the undisputed king of Ghanaian music, he is now part of the general population.
