Turn Week 2024 | Day 1: Favorite Patriot or and Loyalist ⇢ Anna Strong & Edmund Hewlett
The fact that even now you can't stoop to his level is to your credit, Edmund. You're a good and decent man. So my only choice is to submit? If you're feeling trapped between the proverbial rock and the hard place, why not use the rock to smash the hard place? Last year, Simcoe framed you for murder and used rebel soldiers to try to kill you. Why not return the favor by using rebels that you've just been made aware of to kill him?

Note
your writing of Anna is the most captivating rendition i have ever seen. could you give me a dribble of Anna and Hewlett moment.
Oh, thank you!!! I am so glad you enjoy reading my things. I just want to thank you first off, for taking your time to read and comment on my work. Honestly, I stay because of kind people like you. <3
As Lovers Do
The gazes that meet across the crowded room are equally as listless in nature. There beyond the bustle, above the endless trivial chatter, is birthed a new chord of tension.
His is the first glance to avert; though the eternal longing etched within their fathoms refuses to be so easily satiated.
Edmund's lips purse in the form of a firm frown. Anna Strong, his greatest treasure, and the source of his defeat, had SEEN him. The dour expression she bore engendered nothing but sympathy. Sympathy from a heart he felt had long bled dry. And yet, he has nothing he wishes to express to her. Nothing noteworthy nor healing. His jaw moodily screws shut.
Anna's calloused fingers glide down her bodice, willing the subtle sheen of sweat to vaporize. He looks well, for all that time spent agonizing over his safety. She opens her mouth to speak, to broach the gaping distance gathering, despite their physical proximity. But what words could genuinely express the shallowed utterances of a heart long ignored? What lexicon could there be to translate an apology worthy of him?
Hewlett's staggered steps, nearly half-graceless, manage to dodge a protruding chair shoved out in their path. Now, he finds his only exit from the tormented room barricaded by a bubbly-over indulgent man. An awaiting arm is slung about his broad shoulders.
"What is your hurry this fine day?!!!" Rivington heedlessly needled. "Surely, you can't be vested in work when there is such lovely company to be had." He buoyantly expresses, willing Hewlett to follow his lead back towards a bewildered looking brunette.
Oh, how far did fifteen feet seem when it is not assessable as a hurried route for departure. Anna shifts her weight, barely avoiding a tipsy officer who likened her to a downcast angel. His mutterings of meeting him upstairs heralded a stern glower, for features that had been rendered so soft and comely. It is in dodging this member of the King's wayward guard, that she is intercepted by Hewlett and Rivington.
"Major..." A soft powdery voice cracks. All the familiarity she wished to burry floods between the single title's seams. Doleful, rather than intrepid, her eyes scale upwards to behold him between elongated lashes.
She swallows, trying to ignore the tenuous thrum inside of her chest. "I am--" She starts, half wincing as she attempts to string together something remarkably close to intelligent. "I am -- pleased to find you in good health." Cheeks singe red with embarrassment. He deserved far better than a greeting so impersonal.
"Anna-" In a graceless flit of his heart, he forgets himself. "It seems life away from Setauket agrees with you." His own voice is fatigued with a degree of gravel lodged within.
Rivington's astonished glance slips between the two. "YOU KNOW EACH OTHER?" The insatiable gossip is rather pleased with the development. "Lovers?!!" He presumes, only to be nailed twice with exasperated expressions.
A titter of laughter ambles over his lips. "Ah, so you were lovers!!!" And now prying, Rivington seeks out an explanation. His entreating eyes stay affixed as if he were a vulture eyeing his pray. "Let us get some drinks, so we can speak!!!"
Anna's face blanches. "I--" She chokes on her own excuses. Her brows sharply colliding over the bridge of her nose. Usually, she had at least three prepared for every occasion but this, this had taken her so far off guard, recovery seemed nearly impossible.
Hewlett manages to pick up the slack where Anna had failed. "We-- have-- some business to conduct in private." Sensing Rivington's hesitation to let matters be, he casually tacks on. He tries to strain all the begrudging bitterness from his voice. "As lovers often do."

Honorable
Based on this request: How about a Hewlett one? Maybe reader is engaged to someone else but doesn’t love him and actually has feelings for Hewlett? Hewlett loves her too, but can’t bring himself to try and break off the engagement because he’s really trying to be honorable. Fluffy happy ending please?
Here you go! *Familiar Characters are NEVER mine!*
Fandom: TURN: Washington's Spies
Warnings: Slight angst, but mostly fluff!
Pairings/Characters: Major Edmund Hewlett x fem!reader, Samuel(OC)
Tumblr media
You hated being betrothed to your fiance. You truly did. But your father loved the man and thus, had approved the marriage before you were even aware a proposal was happening. You felt trapped, like you were being pulled under the surface of the water and drowning with no one to help you get back to the surface. That was how you felt every second of every day. You despised the feeling. But there was one person who could make it just a little bit better.
Major Edmund Hewlett was somewhat opposite of your fiance. He was the kind of man you'd always thought you'd marry. Quiet, intelligent, and kind. He was soft spoken with you unless he let his passions bubble to the surface. You loved seeing that side to him. The two of you got along well and enjoyed each other's company. A friendship blossomed between you quickly and, over time, romantic feelings grew. You would have given ANYTHING to not marry your fiance and marry Edmund instead.
When you made the mistake of mentioning this to Edmund, he looked so heartbroken. He gently took your hands in his and gave them a light squeeze. "You cannot say such things, Y/N." The two of you had long dropped formalities whenever you were alone. "Why not? It is the truth." He gave you a soft smile. "Truth or not, it is difficult to maintain my honor when I know you share my feelings." You wanted to be angry at the situation, but you admired how Edmund, even after all his own heartbreak, held onto his honor and protected yours.
Tears welled up in your eyes. "I-I understand, but damn you, Edmund. Damn you for being so honorable," you said, your voice cracking a bit. He smiles once more, his own eyes wet with tears, and brings your hands up to his lips. "Perhaps I am not destined for a lifetime love, but I wish for you to know that I do love you, Y/N." You couldn't help but cry now. Was life truly that unfair?
When you left Edmund a few moments later, your heart grew heavier with every step. It wasn't like you despised your fiance. Not at all. He was a decent man. But you didn't love him. You loved Edmund. Now knowing that Edmund loved you as well, you couldn't help but wish things would turn out differently. Still, you would do your duty and marry your fiance. Or, that's what you had planned to do at least.
A few days later, your fiance called on you in your father's home. You greeted him politely, if a little coldly. Once everyone else had left the room aside from your chaperone, your fiance turned to you. "Word has gotten to me that you've been enjoying another man's company," was all your fiance said. Your eyes grew wide.
"Samuel…" He held up a hand. His eyes met yours, practically boring into your soul. "Major Hewlett is a good man. Do you love him? The truth, please." Your heart was beating out of your chest as you tried to come up with something, anything, that would make this not so bad. Samuel's eyes never left you and you realized that maybe this could be your chance at an escape.
"Yes. I-I love him. But I assure you, he has been nothing but honorable! Never once has anything…untoward happened." You began rambling and didn't notice the small smile creeping onto Samuel's face. It wasn't until he began chuckling a bit that you stopped. You froze, unsure of whether he was angry or not. You didn't know him well enough to discern his different laughs.
"Thank God," he finally said. You were taken aback. "What?" He laughed again. "I must be honest with you, Y/N. I have been searching for a reason to break off our engagement for months. The truth is, I have a love as well and she isn't you. I wish to marry her." You blinked in surprise before smiling yourself.
"Really?" He nodded. "Certainly your father would not object. After all, a major is a far better prospect than a leftenant." You quickly hugged him. "Thank you, Samuel." He smiled at you. "Don't thank me. Just go to him while I speak with your father." You were out of the door before he even finished his sentence.
You must have looked a fright, racing through the crowded streets of York City. You knew where Edmund would be this time of day. Fortunately, he was alone when you burst through the door of his office. His head shot up in surprise upon seeing you disheveled and out of breath. "Miss Y/L/N?" he greeted cautiously in case anyone could overhear.
"Major," you gasped out as you tried to catch your breath, "Edmund, I…had…to…see you!" He stood from his desk and came over to you, helping you to sit. He knelt down in front of you and took your hands. "What is it? Are you hurt?" You shook your head as you beamed at him.
"He broke of the engagement." Edmund stared at you as his mind processed your words. "Your fiance?" You nodded. "Yes! He-Someone told him they'd seen us together," you said before relaying the whole conversation. Edmund shook his head in disbelief. "And he agreed to release you from your promise of marriage?" You nodded, giddy with the idea of possibilities for your future. All of them featuring your Edmund.
Edmund suddenly stood, pulling you with him. His smile was beautiful as he gazed at you with eyes filled with love and devotion. Without thinking, you leaned in and pressed your lips to his. He responded immediately with a passion you only seen in his words. It thrilled you to your bones. You were panting when you parted. "I suppose there is only one honorable thing to do now," Edmund whispered once he'd caught his breath. You asked what he meant. "I shall have to make you my wife, if you are agreeable." You laughed and replied that you would, of course, marry him. He cupped your face with one hand, bringing your face close to his again to seal your promise with another kiss.
(a/n: I hope you like it! I always love writing Hewlett!)

The writers love Edmund Hewlett so much.  They give him the best speeches.
“We were both swept up by our passions, I by my infatuation with you and you by your love for a married man.  It is good that you have quit Abraham.  Now I must quit you.”

annastrxng asked : ❛ stay? i just ... don't want to be alone right now.  ❜ (anna to hewlett)
Grumpy x Sunshine Sentence Prompts. / @annastrxng -- accepting
Tumblr media
𝐀𝐧𝐧𝐚 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐟𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐨𝐟 𝐛𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐞. Still married, yet no husband in sight, in the middle of a city with a particular redcoat on the prowl with a spy that’s also on his tail -- York City was not the exciting getaway it was years ago with the turn of the war. It seemed with each day, with each return, the city that once held Edmund’s awe had darkened as it was clear the British weren’t as powerful as once imagined. They were losing their grip on the colony and while Edmund stayed true to his King, he had learned of the snakes that had tainted his own side: the officials who laughed behind his back and the unchecked brutality that ran rampant. Anna had a right to be fearful, but he was afraid he couldn’t offer much in terms of safety. With Abraham close by, with Simcoe recognizing Edmund in the coffeehouse, either men were bound to seek him out again and Anna might be wedged in the middle once again.
A deep sinking feeling had taken hold of his gut when he saw her at his doorway and his grip tightened on his office door. Had she been looking for him? Hasn’t she done enough in their last meeting? If she could easily lie to his face and couldn’t give her own truth, he didn’t see why he had to take her pleas into account.
But this wasn’t the kind of man Edmund was. Looking into her wide, brown eyes, he felt a tug on his sympathy and with it, resurfaced his wish to protect her from harm. To protect her from Simcoe, from the mess the cabbage farmer often pulled her into. Willingly, or not.
He opened his mouth to breathe out a sigh and stepped back in the doorway. He opened the door further to allow her entry, giving her a broader view of his new office. It was smaller than the room he was given at Whitehall.
❝ You may come in, ❞ he lowly admitted her entry and turned on his heel to return behind his desk. As he sorted through his papers and stuffed them into various drawers, he was quiet until in the middle of the tense, silent air, he asked her a question.
❝ Is there a reason why you traveled to York City? ❞ There are familiar faces here and not all of them are friendly.

anonymous asked : Astrid, aside from Santa Claus, who else do you think is a DILF?
Unprompted ask. -- always accepting
Tumblr media
𝐒𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐞𝐞𝐭𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐢𝐧𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐫𝐲 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐚 𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐫𝐨𝐰 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚 𝐬𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐠𝐫𝐢𝐧 𝐩𝐨𝐤𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐬. ❝ Who’s asking? Someone who’s interested? ❞ It’s a light joke. She wasn’t exactly looking for anyone, but if someone interesting passed by her, she would be open to the possibility.
Despite her own distaste for the aging look of her face and form, some attraction in her always made her look for men older than her. Between her and her husband, there was a bit of an age gap between them, but all things considered, Astrid could go older than that. The sight of gray or white hairs, a man that could take care of his own and has the experience to show for it, intrigued her. With age comes presumed mastery and by that age, an ego is usually refined and confidence stems from life experience, not arrogance. No fronts are needed, they’re past their “useful days” unlike youthful men who lack maturity. Men with children, well, they also have better conflict management. She looked for emotional maturity more than anything else, looks aside.
❝ Well, my husband, of course. ❞ Oh, she has to mention him. It’s guaranteed. Devlin Mallory, perhaps, though she assumed that any kids he has -- he doesn’t see in person or attempt to acknowledge them. He has the gray, faded hair, the voice, and the muscle mass she looked for in a man, but they were better as friends than the friends-with-benefits situation they had in their younger years. All water under the bridge in the present.
❝ I’ve heard that Abraham Woodhull suits my type, but only for the child-raising part. He lacks the maturity I look for. He looks younger than he says he is. ❞ Besides, from what she’s heard of how he is as a husband, she feels as if her idea of polyamory would be misunderstood as a free for all. ❝ I’m not interested, frankly. ❞
      But there’s another…
❝ The Major? Edmund Hewlett of Setauket? He’s older and prefers a powdered white wig, but I have heard he has a few gray hairs. But he’s far too… passive for my type. ❞ And honestly, Astrid fears that he would sooner put her neck in a noose than be interested in pursuing her if he ever met her. ❝ Easy to manipulate, but for the long term? I think our interests are so vast that compromising would be a wasted effort. ❞ But George Washington... that’s a name she would take up...

omg hello wow um new username who dis? lol but hi. thank you for the ask, I will try my best!
here we go I guess:
Annie Edison, my beloved. 💕 (Community)
I’ve loved Annie since the first time I watched Community. She’s insane, she’s intelligent, she’s incredible. What more can I say? The answer is a lot, but now is simply not the time.
Tumblr media
Peggy Carter (Captain America/Agent Carter/MCU)
Peggy my darling angel, she was one of my first, like, fave characters/role models ever and remains so to this day! She is a strong, independent woman who can kick some butt and knows exactly what she wants. Also like- the hair and the lipstick?? Iconic.
Tumblr media
The Lorax (The Lorax)
I hope it is well known that I love a kids movie and The Lorax is one of my favorites ever! He speaks for the trees! 🥲 It literally makes me cry when he has the little funeral for the first tree I love him so much.
Tumblr media
Jane Eyre (Jane Eyre)
Obviously the title character is the best one. Um what more could you want than poor, plain, and simple Jane. I don’t really know- this book was so insanely wild like what? but also like I feel so sad for Jane in so much of the beginning- my precious baby. But I love how she realizes her worth and value and makes a life for herself and finds family and like yes, is it insane that Mr. Rochester kept his wife in the attic and then that wife later jumped off the top of his burning mansion to her death and Jane later marries that man? Absolutely of course but it’s all part of the drama and the intrigue that is Jane Eyre.
Tumblr media
Cher Horowitz (Clueless)
Yes, she is the worst ever, but also if you think about it…I love her. The audacity. The style. The story. I love her. I love that she has some real character growth and learns the value of friendship and like giving a little and I think it’s a really fun adaptation of Emma and the cultural impact? I mean come on!
Tumblr media
Ted Lasso (Ted Lasso)
Okay like yes, is every character in this show somehow insanely amazing? Yes. But Ted just has this energy and joy that I want so badly to have in my life! I feel like I’m a pretty positive person, but he just absolutely outshines everyone and like how do I be like that? He is so good.
Tumblr media
Edmund Hewlett (TURN)
But also Anna Strong, you know what I mean?? How can I choose between them! I love them both so much- Anna is our queen honestly and just who is doing it like her?? Nobody, that’s who! But Edmund is my skrunkly little baby and I love him too much he is too precious and too pure for this world he deserved to live happily ever after with Anna. 😭
Tumblr media
Effie Trinket (The Hunger Games)
Okay, like, yes, obviously Katniss is our queen and we love her endlessly, BUT I have an undying love for Effie!! She is way superficial at the beginning of the series and so wrapped up in Capital culture, but I love the way she starts to see through the mask of the Games even in the first book/movie and especially through the second and third. I think she really understands the depth of evil that the Games perpetuate and I really liked watching her transformation. Plus like who can ignore her insane style and over-the-top aesthetic? Iconic.
Tumblr media
Janet Wood (Three’s Company)
My queen angel Janet. She’s the rock of the apartment- the rest of them are literally insane and she holds them all together with logic and intelligence and steadfastness. She is also so cool and amazing and what a sweet baby I just want her to be happy.
Tumblr media
Angela Bower (Who’s the Boss)
My namesake, of course. Don’t get me wrong, I love Tony so much also! But Angela is so cool, I just love her. She is smart & dorky and confident and just awesome all around. She is hard-working and so caring, and like the queen of late-80s-early-90s fashion and that is all thank you.

How do you feel about Hewlett? // idk if I sent this one in already but my mind is on them lately
Ask my character "How do you feel about ______?" Can be an idea, person(s), place, or thing, and they'll have to answer honestly. / @sharp-teeth-and-wide-grins
Tumblr media
It wasn’t easy for Ben to admit any goodwill towards the other side, not even with a man of honesty and principle like Edmund Hewlett. It felt like a betrayal -- not just to the colonies, but to Hale, to Samuel, and everyone else he loved who paid the ultimate price. To think of the major as a good man meant that every blade driven into the enemy, every shot fired or tussle enacted could also be geared towards a good man, and Ben didn’t like to think of that. In truth, he had a difficult time juggling with the idea that not everything was quite as clear-cut and romantic and true as the pamphlet readings that once stirred a fire in his heart -- that arguably still stirred him when he laid awake at night. The Cause was what the colonies needed -- he knew this, he knew this -- and yet what if the other side was just as honorable and just? Did that mean that God may favor them, instead?
Rolling his lips inward, Ben finally lifted his head to regard the other. “Hewlett is a fair man,” he replied. “In this day and age, that is a very rare, but welcome trait to find in the other side -- in any man -- and when he makes a promise, I don’t fear that it’ll be broken.” He shrugged. “Had our circumstances been different upon our meeting, I think I would like Major Hewlett quite a bit. We share the same love of knowledge, innovation, and equestrian matters. That alone could fill up an entire evening of discussion.”
But their situations weren’t different, and that meant exacting caution. The heart was the body’s true Achilles’ heel, and Ben wouldn’t allow respect (albeit grudgingly given) to cloud his judgment on what needed to be done.

Sheet Bends and Sunscreen by @tortoisesshells (T, 1k):
A few moments in which Anna Smith Strong snoops on Edmund Hewlett's life via his reading choices - though, really, he's happy enough to talk that it truly isn't snooping?
yet Man is not consum’d by @tortoisesshells (G, 1.1k):
AU for 2x05: Smallpox arrives on the tails of the Rangers, and much of Setauket scrambles for quarantine or for variolation. In the midst of this, Anna Strong finds herself erstwhile nurse to the denizens of Whitehall - an occupation that gives her time to reflect on the help Major Hewlett has offered her.

Shocking Discoveries
@sharp-teeth-and-wide-grins  (Hewlett)
Half gloved fingers ghost across the vellum cover of a book that had made it’s way around camp and then to her Sutler’s cart. Even the pretense of cleaning is an excellent distraction from the salacious, dirty glances men have been casting her the past few days. Why on earth she had merited such vulgar attentions, the brunette couldn’t say. She hadn’t done anything that differed remotely from the usual routine. Perhaps the rumors surrounding her love-life had revived? She turns her fleeting attentions to thumbing through a few pages.
With a dip of her maple orbs, she finds herself recoiling. Her inhaled breath lands more harshly than anticipated when she discovers a form. Not just any form, a scantily clad one who happened to bear remarkable resemblance to her. Worse. It was her.
JUDAS PRIEST!!! The wistful words snare in the undercurrent of her exhale. Her eyes briefly study the form only to seek out any hint of who the artist may be. There is little preventing her eyes from widening further still when she realizes just whose handiwork she was staring at.
Edmund.
Anna had heard tales that a British Major had been captured. That he was being kept somewhere in camp. However, she hadn’t fathomed that it would be him. But now, with this, his very sketch book in patriot camp, she couldn’t help but give this particular rumor some credence. How could his things be in camp, if he himself were not?
Tumblr media
Swallowing down sharply, Anna did what any rational woman would. She stuffed the lewd book under her cloak. After a conversation with Brewster, she affirmed the truth and ascertained Edmund’s location. Despite his and Tallmadge’s instance for her to keep her distance, she decided to pay him a visit.
Bribing the man’s guards was an easy task. For depraved men who wanted for so much, they were keen to accept her offer of antifogmatic, scraps of food, and fresh knit gloves. It was what little she could afford to spare given the dire circumstances of the colonial armies existence.
“Major?” She gasps, when her eyes finally settle upon him. Within seconds, her cloak is shed and draped over his shoulders. Her lips twist, wanting to speak but the shock of seeing him again prevents the words from bridging the gap between thought to spoken word.
At long last, she clears her throat. “Are--- are they treating you well?” Anna finally flatly decides to inquire. It was better than any accusation she had intended to lead with.

Chapter 2: Shards of Glass
Tumblr media
Like that there is a crashing decision, anxieties are high within the family. To follow the commands set on the paper or to challenge them? amongst the chaos outside her Arielle tries to reflect on the Jewish community that had shaped this very moment. Particularly the family loyalties to one Hazzan Gershom Mendes Seixas, the first American born Hazzan of the New York community. These loyalties perhaps explain the decision that is to tear them apart across the Long Island Sound. Loyalty or Rebellion?
Finally! After a few months break chapter 2 of Eye for an Eye is published and ready for you all to enjoy! Enjoy a chapter exploring the internal dynamics of the Jewish community prior to the British occupation of New York City and how this has influenced the decision Arielle finds herself in. Of course I owe an immense thank you to @ms-march for beta reading and listening to all my chatter! I also owe a thank you to @tallmadgeandtea  & @culper-spymaster for taking the time to read my sporadic messages. I hope you all enjoy this and look forward to chapter 3 without such hiatus!

Arielle Nathan, is a young Jewish heiress whose life is thrown into spin by the British interest in her family. Half Jacobite covert and half Jewish, having travelled in short space from London to New York they represent the cultural identities of Britain's enemies. Over the years of the revolution her girlhood melts in Setauket as she learns to take matters into her own hands, those of love from a youthful infatuation with a British Captain to the love of her life-a Quaker in New York to those with more serious consequences- matters of life and death. It seems the Old Testament will continue to ring true.Chapters: 2/?
