Mostly Mezzo Mondays: Connolly, Coote, Sampson, and more
Mostly Mezzo Mondays: a recurring (though not weekly) feature where, on Monday nights, I blog a list of the upcoming broadcasts that have caught my eye on World Concert Hall. My interests: baroque vocal music, art song recitals, and a list of favorite singers.
Christian Gerhaher sings Berlioz’s Les nuits d'été with the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra conducted by Daniel Harding. Tuesday, October 31 on Antena 2.
Sarah Connolly gives a recital of works by Schumann, Mahler, Poulenc, and Richard Rodney Bennet with pianist Joseph Middleton. Tuesday, October 31 on WABE. Note: this recital is scheduled to air at 10:00 p.m. local time on the 31st, which makes it 2:00 a.m. on November 1 in the UK and 3:00 a.m. CET (thus the November 1 listing on WCH, which uses GMT for all listings).
Carolyn Sampson sings English baroque works by Handel, Purcell, Dowland, Arne, and Blow in a concert with the Academy of Ancient Music conducted by Richard Egarr. Thursday, November 2 on BBC Radio 3.*
Alice Coote, Christine Rice, Sophie Bevan, Sally Matthews, Iestyn Davies, and Sir John Tomlinson are among the Brit-heavy cast of Adès’s The Exterminating Angel at the Met. Friday, November 3 on the Met’s free audio stream.
Cavalli’s Eliogabalo is set for broadcast from the DNO, with Franco Fagioli in the title role and other stars including Ed Lyon, Valer Sabadus, and Nicole Cabell. Saturday, November 4 on NPO Radio 4.*
Broadcasts marked with an asterisk (*) are on channels known to me to have a history of making most if not all of their live concert broadcasts available for catch-up listening for at least a week afterward. I can’t guarantee that any of these will be archived online but if you miss the live broadcast, there may be hope!
