the informers. pretty good

don't want to spoil too much (but maybe that's a spoiler in and of itself) but reading it makes you wonder why ellis has to make the stylistic choices he does… it's just short stories, but it's obvious he put care into it

speaking of stylistic choices, he once again begins us in a talking stage (reminiscent of AP and glam), aka confusing dialogue that makes it hard to care

it picks up around the 4th story (in the islands) which also has tim!!! i love the depiction of the relationship he has with his father and how different he is here vs american psycho

it's Very Real to me tbh how tim would retract even further everytime his father handled his son's embarrassment poorly. also enjoyed the fish facts and the callback to the "chances are looking good" line

5 and 6 were eh to me

7 (discovering japan).. oh wow. here it stands out that the best short stories are probably going to be the ones with interesting relationship dynamics (as with 4). the tension between roger and bryan is craaaazy good. the long sleeves line … the "rearrange my dreams for me" … the way they're so intertwined together is good and i hope the movie did them justice

8 (letters from LA) was sad and honestly the most horrifying for me. this was one immediately interesting because the letters' recipient is sean! anyway, not much to say other than that it kept reminding me of this image except reversed

9 is okay. great dialogue and enjoyed the descriptions of the narrator meandering around

10 (the secrets of summer) is my favorite lmaoo. i checked the wikipedia summaries of the stories and for some reason they think the narrator is lying when he says he's a vampire? idk it confused me considering the implications from the 2nd story and also the freaky shit that he does in this story

really funny, really fucked up. he makes this shitty racist joke and laughs at himself everytime. idk what to say about the story itself (still digesting) but the ending..? ??? <- that's what i'm saying about it (i liked it but oh okay!)

11 (the fifth wheel) is strange even though it has Normal People (as opposed to 10), but that's what makes it stranger imo. probably has my favorite flow and diction choices. the narrator is just so done with all the bs and it's great

12 (on the beach) has the same mysterious vibes as 11, though i couldn't get into it as much. if i think about the description of the girlfriend it might scare me i think. very much the horror convention of only letting you see a peek of the scary thing and getting the imagination to run wild

13 (at the zoo with bruce) is the last story. yet another ??? one for me. i did like spending the day at the zoo with the characters (though it sucks the animals were mistreated) it had a quaint feeling i could relate to

see the thing is. she doesn't even really Have characterization for the most part. everyone else who does terrible shit gets to have their Interiority and Nuanced Reasons for it but despite how much time we spend w/ her the most we ever get on her personality is that she:

- believes in a predator/prey model of society (core personality trait is literally just Being Predatory and espousing stupid ideologies other characters get to ridicule)

- maybe had some sad things happen to her but more importantly she's an unappreciative bitch about her family, which is something that wildbow makes sure to call out once w/ the white boy gratuitously torturing her and once w/ the only other black girl in the book (who apparently did not have that much of an issue with the gratuitous torture thing) going "no he was so right....you don't appreciate how much your fambily loves you 😔 blind to the emotions of others"

i think the more fundamental issue to address here is that it's part of an underlying pattern where there's all of five black characters in the whole of worm and the line-up there is

which is to say you can't really fix the problem just by giving sophia depth, because even if she was the most well-developed character on the planet, that would still be the whole lineup of black characters in the book--what you'd actually need is a rewrite of so many vast and interconnected parts of the book that i could start making a bulletpointed list of everything i remember adding a point to the Wildbow Moment Counter for and not be done for three hours

one thing about me i dont say enough on here enough because she stops being as relevant during the part of worm i was stuck on for a while. i am a sophia apologist and a sophia supporter. by which i mean i think if you read one of the most blatantly infuriatingly ridiculously misogynoiristic stereotypes i have ever seen in anything ever and genuinely Get Mad At The Character for it you should reconsider and just go yell at wildbow instead. like when writers hold up sock puppets of a bigoted stereotype of a marginalized character on their hand. and make the sock puppet do something bad. you're not supposed to go YEAH. FUCK THE SOCK PUPPET. you're supposed to realize that it's a goddamn sock puppet the writer is holding and ask the writer why they feel the need to make their sock puppet of one of the only black women in the entire book a violent predatory animalistic bully who literally hunts the white protag and then suffers an extensive gratuitous revenge fantasy that goes more or less entirely unaddressed as something fucked up. the sock puppet metaphor is wearing itself out but you get my point i think any amount of genuine disdain for sophia as a character sucks and is frankly oblivious 2 how spiteful and awful wildbow's writing of her is

FINAL (probably) SPOILERS FOR LIS

Final Opinions on characters!

Max: Protagonist, One-liners 💯, I like the fact that instead of being a 18 year old female protag that looks like a 30 year old, sexy lawyer that she’s genuinely just a normal, average girl.

Chloe: Main character, dies every 5 minutes but she’s somehow nothing like Ashley-, Shes everything I wanna be (except for the guns and drugs, just the punk rock vibe), I like that she’s a cool character that in the end was willing to give her life up for her town, and that she wanted to be more than the character you have to keep saving.

Victoria: Classic bully, The trim tho- (jk), I like that she wasn’t a bully because she thought max was lower than her, she was a bully because she was genuinely jealous of Max for being allowed to be herself and not care, while Victoria was scared of being herself because she cared about everyone’s opinions.

Waren: Attempted love interest, I like that he was willing to anything to keep Max safe, going from beating Nathan up once, twice and giving her that last hug in the diner (I chose a hug because I wanted to shag Chloe), Im genuinely upset that it ended that way.

Nathan: Antagonist, Mixed emotions, I like that in the end he understood what he did wrong and that he apologised to Max for it, but 1. He blamed all his issues on everyone else claiming they manipulated him, without understanding that some of his issues were results of his OWN problems that he failed to understand and 2. He shouldn’t have apologised to Max about Rachel, Kate yes, but not Rachel. If anything that apology was owed to Chloe.

Kate: Victim 😔, I’m legit crying, I like that she genuinely relies on Max and Max just wanted to keep her safe, but I feel she was waisted and was used only as a Victim and at the end of the day she never got her revenge, she never got to see the people love her for a change, and even in the ending where she lives, I feel like she should be allowed to leave her own two cents rather than just being a victim of everything horrific. (Assault, drugged, Mental abuse from mother, bullying)

Jeffer-keep your kids away: Main antagonist-pedo-kidnaper weirdo, if you defend him then fuck off, legit this disgusting pig groomed kids like Victoria and Rachel to kidnap them, take photos of them drugged and then kill them. Have this mans hands cut off and eyes gouged out.

David: Anti-Hero (I think that’s the right one?), he’s a hero at the end, but he starts off as a dickhead, the game makes you want to perceive him as an absolute Bastard. In truth it does. He’s a douchebag when you meet him and his sorta a kinda ‘god complex’ when you first meet him, he’s never wrong and wants everyone to respect him. Towards the end however he saves Max hoping to find Chloe and the ending where you tell him about Chloe deadass makes me cry everytime 😭 but still, not an amazing person. He gives me mixed emotions especially if you consider what he did to kate (and that added to her wanted to commit suicide)

*Edited David’s part because I felt a lot of people were perceiving it as I was defending his actions towards Chloe, I’m not. He’s a dick, but at the end he saves Max who then has the option to save Chloe. So in a way he won.
