Snow White Winter: "Schneewittchen und die sieben Zwerge" (1955 German film)
Tumblr media
American children of the '60s might remember this Snow White from weekend "kiddie matinees." After its original German release in 1955, it was dubbed into English by Childhood Productions and released in the US as a matinée feature in 1965. It was directed by Erich Kobler and stars the lovely young Elke Arendt as Snow White and Addi Adametz as the wicked Queen.
For the most part, the film follows the Grimm's tale faithfully, with just a few embellishments. A brief prologue shows Snow White's real mother at her window, followed by baby Snow White in her cradle, while a narrator sets the scene and informs us of the good queen's death and the king's remarriage in wording nearly identical to the Grimm's text. We then move ahead sixteen years to the story proper. There we find that out of jealousy, the Queen confines Snow White to the castle grounds and lets no visitors see her. (The king is mentioned as if he were still alive, but he never appears onscreen.) But when Prince Edelmut (literally "Prince Gallantry," rendered in the English dub as Prince Charming) comes to call, having heard of Snow White's great beauty, he glimpses her on a balcony. Instantly smitten, he gives the Hunter a gift for her, a necklace "for the fairest in the land," and makes him promise to send for him if Snow White is ever in danger. But when the Queen discovers this, she snatches the necklace away. Then she consults her magic mirror, and we all know what happens next, although in a touch of bowdlerizing, the Queen demands no proof of Snow White's death from the Hunter.
The dwarfs' names are Wurzel, Klaps, Flink, Troll, Purzel, Tröpfchen and Bimbam (in the English dub, Whitey, Bushy, Eddy, Teddy, Freddy, Blacky and Bimbam), and they're all played by children. Specifically by children from Suse Böhm's dance troupe, and as soon as they befriend Snow White, they show off their skills by performing cartwheels and tumbling tricks for her, then dancing with her. But that very night the Queen consults the magic mirror again, learns of Snow White's whereabouts, and sets straight out in disguise to arrive at the dwarfs' cottage the next morning.
All three of the Queen's attempts on Snow White's life from the Grimm's tale are included, although the suffocating bodice lace is bowdlerized into a belt. The first two attempts make Snow White's intelligence seem doubtful, as the Queen merely throws on her disguises over her queenly gown and does nothing to disguise her face, but at least for the poisoned apple delivery she finally uses magic to change her appearance. Fortunately, a maidservant overhears her creating the poisoned apple, then frees the Hunter from the dungeon where the Queen imprisoned him, and the Hunter in turn goes to warn the Prince. Of course they don't arrive in time to save Snow White, although immediately after poisoning her, the Queen is killed by a lightning bolt as she walks homeward in a storm. The grieving Prince implores the dwarfs to let him take Snow White's glass coffin home with him, but as they carry it forth, Bimbam trips over a tree root, the coffin falls, and the piece of apple is jolted from Snow White's throat. After she revives, the Prince invites the dwarfs to come and live with them at the castle; the dwarfs decline out of love for their forest, but they do attend Snow White and the Prince's wedding, bringing them new crowns made with gold and jewels from their mine and setting off a magical fireworks show.
While the production values aren't particularly high, the entire film still has a charming fairy tale atmosphere, from the from the castle scenes filmed at Bavaria's historic Neuschwanstein Castle (the same one that inspired the design of Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland and which was later used in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Spaceballs), to the beautiful forest scenes and the folksy scenes at the dwarfs' colorful cottage. The colorful pseudo-medieval costumes further enhance the feeling of Old World fantasy, as does the lively orchestral score. Some of the visual effects are slightly cheesy - for example, a bear that frightens Snow White in the woods, which is clearly a person in a suit, and the fact that the dwarfs are so obviously children in fake beards. But in a way this adds to the film's charm. The film's German version isn't a musical, although the dwarfs do sing a marching song, but the English dub adds a few reasonably endearing songs by Anne and Milton Delugg.
Predictably (perhaps inescapably), some scenes do evoke the Disney version of the tale. As mentioned, the dwarfs sing a marching song. Bimbam is a scatterbrained little "runt at the end", although he doesn't particularly act like Dopey, and when the dwarfs creep into their house in fear of an intruder, he startles them all by sneezing, although less powerfully than Sneezy. When Snow White wakes up they all hide behind the beds' footboards. The aforementioned dancing scene brings to mind "The Silly Song," and a later scene shows Snow White and the dwarfs doing all sorts of housework, in the English dub singing a song very similar in tone to "Whistle While You Work." And the Queen's demise by lightning definitely recalls her Disney counterpart's fate, although no cliff is involved here and the entire scene is more abrupt and perfunctory. But as a whole, these influences are small, and this is very much an adaptation of the original Grimms' tale, with its own look, feel, and charms.
Is this a definitive Snow White? No. But is it still an endearing example of Germany's colorful 1950s fairy tale films? Yes.

Vice (Adam McKay, 2018)
Cast: Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Steve Carell, Sam Rockwell, Alison Pill, Eddie Marsan, Justin Kirk, LisaGay Hamilton, Jesse Plemons, Bill Camp, Don McManus, Lily Rabe, Shea Whigham, Stephen Adly Guirgis, Tyler Perry. Screenplay: Adam McKay. Cinematography: Greig Fraser. Production design: Patrice Vermette. Film editing: Hank Corwin. Music: Nicholas Britell.
Vice got me to thinking that maybe Hannah Arendt got it wrong: It's not the banality of evil but the mediocrity of evil. Dick Cheney, at least as Adam McKay's screenplay and Christian Bale's performance present him, was initially a vehicle for the varying ambitions of others: his wife, Lynne (Amy Adams), his mentor, Donald Rumsfeld (Steve Carell), and George W. Bush (Sam Rockwell). Cheney was like a liquid that flowed into the channels they provided him, helping create the Republican Party that would be shaped into its current form by Fox News and Donald Trump. Bale portrays Cheney as the silent menace we know from newsreels, ready to snap at any plausible idea, from redefining presidential power to making war on Saddam Hussein to sanctioning torture. But he begins as something of a naïf, not even sure which party he belongs to, and even asking Rumsfeld what the Republicans are for, which provokes gales of laughter from Rumsfeld. The problem with McKay's film, however, is that despite Bale's remarkable performance, Vice is overlong and confused, wavering from straight behind-the-headlines dramatization to satiric bits like a waiter (a cameo by Alfred Molina) serving up Republican agenda items to a tableful of fat cats. The narrative is chopped up with flashbacks and time jumps, and even includes an occasional narrator named Kurt (Jesse Plemons), whose identity is withheld for most of the film to provide a small but essentially pointless surprise. There's even a bit in the middle of the final credits, in which a contemporary focus group comes to blows over the film's “political bias.” I share McKay's obvious bias, but I wish he didn't wear it so proudly.

SCATTERED MEMORIES
Hannah Arendt said, it is almost impossible to tell your own story. You can only tell it through the others who are close to you.
Time gets trickier as it grows in your head. Memories and plans get mixed up as nightly dreams tackle reality. After more than 40 creations with so many wonderful people with daring ideas and stunning talents, it is hard to separate feelings and memories from future plans. The past knocks on the door of what is still to come and on that crosspoint, we look back and forward with our specialanniversary project Scattered Memories with a large cast.

Quotes for Tuesday July 25,2017
Angel quotes Angels are spirit beings who are mentioned more than 250 times in both the Old Testament and the New Testament of the Bible.  Mary C. Neal, MD, To Heaven and Back They care for, protect, and guide God's people, frequently intervening or bring messages to people from God.  Mary C. Neal, MD, To Heaven and Back What a loving God we serve! Not only has He prepared a heavenly dwelling for us, but His angels also accompany us as we transition from this world to the next.  Dr. David Jeremiah Even when we are frustrated by our inability to understand a circumstance or event, there are unseen angels bringing comfort and protection as directed by the wisdom of God.      Mary C. Neal, MD, To Heaven and Back There have been many times in my life when I feel there has been an angel on my shoulder watching out for me.   Catherine Pulsifer When angels visit us, we do not hear the rustle of wings, nor feel the feathery touch of the breast of a dove; but we know their presence by the love they create in our hearts.  Mary Baker Eddy, Poems by Mary Baker Eddy God is here, right now, at our side. We can see Him in this mist, in the ground we're walking on, even in my shoes. His angels keep watch while we sleep and help us in our work. In order to find God, you have only to look around.  Paulo Coelho, By the River Piedra I Sat Down and Wept ~~~~~~ Blessings quotes Be grateful for who you are and whatever you have. Everything you have is a gift from God.  Rick Warren    -   What On Earth Am I Here for? It is God's will to bless us, but not necessarily on our terms. Sometimes what we think would be a wonderful blessing would not bless us at all.  Joyce Meyers, Be Anxious For Nothing Confidently receive God's abundant blessings. Think abundance, prosperity, and the best of everything.  Norman Vincent Peale -  Have A Great Day In gratitude for God's gift of life to us we should share that gift with others. The art of giving encompasses many areas. It is an outgoing, overflowing way of life. Wilferd A. Peterson, The Art of Living Treasure Chest Live a life of gratitude, giving thanks in all circumstances.  Mary C. Neal, MD, To Heaven and Back Always count your blessings and thank God for all that you have ~~~~~~~~ Forgiveness quotes Forgiveness is the economy of the heart... Forgiveness saves the expense of anger, the cost of hatred, the waste of spirits.--Hannah More ("Christianity a Practical Principle" Practical Piety) Forgiveness is the final form of love.--Reinhold Niebuhr Forgiveness is the fragrance that the flower leaves on the heel of the one that crushed it.--Anonymous Forgiveness is the giving, and so the receiving, of life.--George Macdonald Forgiveness is the key that unlocks the door of resentment and the handcuffs of hate. It is a power that breaks the chains of bitterness and the shackles of selfishness.--William Arthur Ward (Your Achievement Ezine - Issue No. 154) Forgiveness is the key to action and freedom.--Hannah Arendt Forgiveness is the name of love practiced among people who love poorly. The hard truth is that all of us love poorly. We need to forgive and be forgiven every day, every hour -- unceasingly. That is the great work of love among the fellowship of the weak that is the human family.--Henri Nouwen ~~~~~~ Life quotes Life is either a daring adventure or nothing. Helen Keller Life is like a game of cards. The hand that is dealt you represents determinism; the way you play it is free will.Jawaharlal Nehru The purpose of life is a life of purpose. Robert Byrne The grand essentials of life are something to do, something to love, something to hope for. Thomas Chalmers The whole universe is change and life itself is but what you deem it. Marcus Aurelius Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance you must keep moving. Albert Einstein ~~~~ Past quotes We are products of our past, but we don't have to be prisoners of it.--Rick Warren (The Purpose Driven Life: What on Earth Am I Here for?) We must welcome the future, remembering that soon it will be the past; and we must respect the past, knowing that once it was all that was humanly possible.--George Santayana When the past calls, let it go to voicemail. Believe me, it has nothing new to say.--Unknown Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past.--George Orwell You can no longer look to the past in an attempt to predict your future. A large part of the present is obsolete and, for most people, much of the future is beyond comprehension.--Christopher Hegarty ~~~~~~ Patience quotes Patience and Diligence, like faith, remove mountains.--William Penn Patience and perseverance have a magical effect before which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish.--John Quincy Adams Patience and time do more than strength or passion.--Jean de LaFontaine Patience asks us to live the moment to the fullest, to be completely present to the moment, to taste the here and now, to be where we are.--Henri Nouwen (Bread For the Journey) Patience can't be acquired overnight. It is just like building up a muscle. Every day you need to work on it.--Eknath Easwaran Patience has its limits. Take it too far, and it's cowardice.--George Jackson Patience is bitter, but it's fruit is sweet.--Lida Clarkson ("Brush Studies" Ladies' Home Journal, 1884) Patience is necessary, and one cannot reap immediately where one has sown.--Soren Kierkegaard (Journal) Patience is not just about waiting for something it’s about how you wait, or your attitude while waiting.--Joyce Meyer
