Forty Days of Frankenstein, Day Twenty-Seven: Sometimes the simple things really are the best, and this Frankenstein image is proof. Ed Emberley is a talented commercial artist and illustrator, with dozens of children’s books under his belt. He also is the author a series of books in which he teaches children to draw using a series of simple shapes. This excellent Frankenstein is from his 2002 book *Ed Emberley’s Drawing Book of Weirdos.” Which is exactly what it says on the tin. A how-to book for drawing “weirdos” including, not only this Monster, but also a vampire, a witch, a werewolf, and bunches more. How much would you have loved, at five years old, or seven, or eleven, to have had a book that showed you how to draw weirdos? Shut up and take my little-kid money, Ed Emberley!

Anyone else out there remember these books? I’m getting a bunch of them for my sister’s kids because they love to draw but find it frustrating. These books make learning to draw really fun and easy. The process is broken down into how to build figures based on simple shapes. But they don’t stop there! The books also show how to make variations using those same basic shapes to build figures, and how to incorporate each figure into a larger picture. They’re lighthearted but really instructional and a good foundation for conceptualizing the building stage of drawing.
Many are available on The Internet Archive for free! Some are downloadable but they’re all DRM locked so you can’t print them.

crimbo gifts for children
Crimbo gifts for a friend of mine's kids. Among other things, I'm the "cool drawing grownup" every time I see them. I think they're old enough to maybe appreciate their own sketchbooks. The Ed Emberley books were certainly formative to my development, so I hope they enjoy them as much as I did at that age.

Not sure if this makes sense but how have you learned/practiced simplifying and stylizing the animals you draw? I can’t seem to stray from drawing them more realistically and am not sure how to expand my style :,)
the answer is shapes. you gotta find the basic shapes of any animal and just run with them. draw the same animal a lot and experiment with going super simplified, and then take elements you like from that version into a more realistic drawing. trace pictures, look at other peoples work and find the shapes in their interpretations.
ed emberleys drawing books are my favorite example of this idea - i loved these books as a kid and they are great at making this whole "Seeing shapes in more complicated things" simple to grasp. just look at these guys!!!
