Unit 02 Blog Post
My ideal role as an environmental interpreter would be working in one of our country's great National Parks out west, or in a Provincial Park in Ontario doing guided tours over a few days. I have been extremely lucky to be shown the outdoors, as I understand that many people have not had the same opportunity. The outdoors as peaceful as it may seem, may also appear equally as daunting to a beginner. Without the proper gear, knowledge, and skills, it can be a near impossible challenge to successfully thrive in the interior bush throughout a few-day trip. I know firsthand how expensive good outdoor gear is, believe me, I've spent a little too much over the past few years…. However, good quality gear can often make or break a trip. This isn’t to say that one must wear only Patagonia clothes, and have the world's best tent, however, good quality gear that won't break after the first use is a must while on multi-day trips in the bush.
Knowledge is the next item that is needed. Many if not most people camping in an area are not from that area, so who's to blame them for not knowing the land very well? Many people just don’t know where to go or what to do when they get there. If I were their tour guide I would make sure that they are able to see some well-known areas, as well as get some information in an easy-to-digest way that doesn’t bore them. The last thing I would want is to make my audience not want to go camping again due to my boring stories! If I were to be a guide in Algonquin Park, I know the land and its history extremely well, and I believe that many people would potentially pay to hear my knowledge if it is delivered correctly.
Skill is a very important factor when spending extended amounts of time in the backcountry. The level of skill out in the bush can sometimes become a life-or-death situation. If one wanders into the interior backcountry with little to no prior outdoor skills, one could face an unfortunate fate. This is why it is important to hire a guide with knowledge and appropriate skills. I strongly believe that the outdoors should be accessible for everyone, but the reality is, is that it is not. Whether it be lack of knowledge or skills, or economic barriers such as the price of good gear. I understand that these barriers exist and if I were to be a nature interpreter I would do my best to knock down these barriers. The outdoors is something that should be shared and celebrated so that more people truly understand the great benefit of continuing to conserve our natural areas.
I've attached a picture of my truck, an early 2000s Ford Ranger. This old truck has been my primary way of navigating the interior backroads on my way to all my camping trips. Behind it, I am towing my canoes, as well as all the gear associated with it. I understand that many people just aren't fortunate enough to be able to partake in these activities, and I'm very grateful that I have the equipment needed to. I strongly believe everyone should have access to nature.

The Material World Portrait Gallery by Peter Menzel is a profound visual exploration of the disparities and similarities in material possessions across different cultures. By examining the possessions of families from various parts of the world, these images offer a narrative not just of economic status, but of values, priorities, and the very fabric of daily life as it varies from one culture to another.
In the first image, we see a family in a rural setting, surrounded by a diverse array of cooking utensils, textiles, and farm animals. The presence of livestock and agricultural tools suggests a lifestyle closely tied to subsistence farming and traditional living. Children growing up in this environment may learn the value of self-sufficiency, the importance of family and community ties, and a deep connection to the land from an early age.
The second photograph displays a family's possessions in a more urban setting. The outdoor living room arrangement, including a sofa and a television, indicates a blend of indoor and outdoor spaces common in warmer climates. The presence of cars and a satellite dish points to a more modern lifestyle with access to global communication and a level of wealth that allows for personal transportation.
In the third image, we observe a family in a densely packed urban environment, with their belongings neatly organized on the roof of their home. This setting suggests a community-oriented lifestyle where space is a premium, and possessions are likely limited to essentials and items of personal significance. Children here might grow up with an understanding of close-knit social structures and the importance of optimizing limited resources.
The fourth picture shows a family with a mixture of traditional and modern items, with a blend of cultural artifacts and contemporary appliances like a stereo system. This juxtaposition might reflect a transitional society where traditional values coexist with modern influences, offering children a diverse developmental niche that includes both ancestral heritage and contemporary global culture.
Finally, the fifth image portrays a family in a colder climate with musical instruments and a horse, suggesting a lifestyle that includes both modern amenities and elements of rural or traditional life. The presence of musical instruments might indicate a cultural emphasis on the arts and entertainment, and the horse could be a sign of a connection to nature or traditional means of transportation.
In the photographs, we see possessions that range from the essentials for survival, such as pots and food, to items of leisure and technology, like televisions and musical instruments. These images invite us to consider how the objects we surround ourselves with serve as extensions of our identities and societal values.
Reflecting on my own childhood environment, it was considerably different from many of the environments depicted in these photographs. While I had access to educational toys, books, and technology, which indicated a value placed on learning and staying connected with the world, some environments shown in the photographs emphasize self-sufficiency, with tools and agricultural implements taking precedence. This difference underscores how my environment was geared towards a knowledge-based developmental niche, while others are directed towards practical skills and immediate sustenance.
Comparing my childhood environment to the one with a tent and furniture arranged outdoors, I notice the communal aspect that seems present there, perhaps indicating a culture where family and community gatherings are central to daily life. Meanwhile, the photograph with a plethora of kitchen utensils and food items suggests a setting where cooking and sharing meals are significant familial activities, pointing to the nurturing aspect of their developmental niche.
The diversity of items, from the basic to the modern, and their arrangement around the families, paints a vivid picture of what each culture holds dear. It's interesting to note the presence of musical instruments in some, highlighting the role of art and music in child development, contrasting with environments where practical items for daily chores are more prevalent.
The developmental niche framework encapsulates not only the physical and social settings in which children grow but also the culturally regulated customs of child care and the psychology of the caretakers. These photographs vividly represent this concept, showing the tangible aspects of children's surroundings that, in turn, shape their development.
In reflecting on these photographs and my own background, I can appreciate the varied landscapes of childhood each of us has. While my environment was filled with books and computers, suggesting a value on education and global connectivity, other environments are rich with craft tools or livestock, indicating values of self-reliance and family labour. Each set of possessions reflects a unique set of cultural values and provides a distinct developmental niche for the children raised within them.

Blog 3: Defining privilege in nature interpretation
Hi! Welcome to blog 3,
According to Oxford Dictionary privilege is defined as “a special right, advantage, or immunity granted or available only to a particular person or group” lets take this definition and bring it into the perspective of nature interpretation. Privilege will generally affect people in the factors of education, socio-economic status and culture/community.
In the context of nature interpretation, privilege can indeed influence individuals based on factors such as education, socio-economic status, and culture/community. Let's explore how:
Education: Individuals with a higher level of education may have a more in-depth understanding of ecological systems, biodiversity, and environmental issues ( this does not discount the knowledge of individuals without higher level education, there are more methods of learning than academia). They might appreciate the intricacies of nature on a more profound level due to formal education in the sciences or related fields. Nature interpreters need to recognize varying levels of environmental knowledge among visitors. Privilege in education might manifest in a more nuanced appreciation of ecological complexities, allowing for more advanced and specialized discussions during interpretive programs.
Socio-Economic Status: Those with higher socio-economic status may have the means to access and explore natural spaces more frequently. They might afford outdoor gear, travel expenses, or participate in activities like guided nature tours, which can enhance their connection with nature. Nature interpreters should be aware of economic barriers that some visitors may face. Creating inclusive programs that cater to diverse economic backgrounds ensures that everyone, regardless of financial status, has the opportunity to engage meaningfully with nature.
Culture/Community: Different cultures may have unique perspectives on nature, influenced by traditions, beliefs, or practices. Those with a cultural background (Indigenous communities for example) emphasizing environmental stewardship may already possess a deep connection to and respect for nature. Nature interpreters must be culturally sensitive and recognize the diversity of perspectives. Acknowledging and incorporating various cultural viewpoints enriches the interpretation experience, fostering inclusivity and understanding among visitors from different backgrounds.
In essence, understanding and addressing privilege in nature interpretation involves tailoring programs to accommodate diverse levels of education, socio-economic backgrounds, and cultural influences. By doing so, interpreters can ensure that the beauty and knowledge of nature are accessible and appreciated by a broad spectrum of individuals, regardless of their privileges.
I didn't have too much to say on this topic and will be happy to see what others think. :)

Built to Last
Not knowing an ad’s genesis, I make it a rule to refrain from commenting on it, but there are times when exceptions to the rule are necessary:
Appalled by commercial after commercial appearing on a recent Super Bowl, I didn’t hold back, dismissing the dozens that were dismissible, praising the one that wasn’t.
Impressed by the long overdue recognition of my former agency, Ammirati & Puris, I didn’t hold back there either, acknowledging what was great about a shop most everyone considered stellar. Like other once-great-now-gone firms victimized then extinguished by holding company avarice, Ammirati’s rightly celebrated work endures.
Australia not only has earned a reputation for inventiveness when it comes to films and scripted television drama, they are marvelously iconoclastic when it comes to advertising, best reflected in the spot, “Dumb Ways to Die.” Suspend judgement on the wickedly direct, very unsettling title and watch; you’ll see why Australia is home to some of the best creative work ever.
Given the deep respect I have for Yvon Chouinard and the company he founded, Patagonia, years ago I cited one of the print ads I hold in high regard, recognizing that to this day remains true to the company’s core values.
That makes four examples in nearly 750 posts written over more than 13 years, so I often don’t give in to the need to play the critic, but am reminded of this because Chouinard was in the news recently, this time with a New York Times guest editorial, where he observes:
“The company I founded turns 50 this year. People ask me how it has managed to stick around so long when the average life span of a corporation is less than 20 years. I tell them it’s been our unrelenting focus on quality, which includes making things that last and that cause the least amount of harm to our planet.”
He observes that critics,
“thought we were crazy for repairing our own gear and urging our customers to buy less. They said our focus on quality would drive up prices and put our products out of reach. “But the naysayers were wrong.”
Then goes on to say,
“Quality is smart business. Even during economic downturns, people don’t stop spending. In our experience, instead of wanting more, they value better.”
Patagonia makes stuff – climbing gear, all-weather apparel, a variety of outdoor equipment – but step back from the items they produce and you see not things, you see values – durability, sustainability, longevity that borders on timeless, unimpeachable, and eternal.
I work in a business that doesn’t make stuff; at its best, it makes ideas; ideas that find their voice in all forms of advertising and marketing, in colleague support when its needed most, in client service at its best, when it solves problems, pursues opportunities, and builds enduring relationships.
It’s a business to which my former advertising agency, Ammirati & Puris, dedicated itself, explaining, in part, the post I wrote about it, in an industry where fewer such shops exist, seemingly losing their sense of mission, vision, and purpose.
It’s a business to which The Art of Client Service dedicates itself, explaining, in part, why I’ve written three editions over the last 20-plus years, and always am thinking how I can help people get better at what they do.
And it’s the business to which Yvon Chouinard and Patagonia dedicates itself, explaining in part, why it could succeed when predictions said couldn’t.
As Chouinard points out, “the poor can’t afford cheap goods.” Clients can’t afford cheap advertising either, or short-changed client service, or work that is perishable, disposable, and forgettable, something all of us should keep in mind the next time we search for something cheap, which often means, something not worth whatever you paid for it.
A concluding thought: “Built to last” is a fitting way to end the year; the next time we connect, it will be 2024. To repeat what I said in my last post, if you’re traveling to see family or friends, by all means travel safe.
Thursday also is Roberta’s and my 26th wedding anniversary, another thing that’s built to last. Happy anniversary Honey! Xoxo mbb

Brownells Aluma-Hyde
Brownells Aluma-Hyde paint is a durable spray-on firearm finish specifically designed for applications requiring high resistance/friction, corrosion, and environmental factors. While its primary use is for firearms, its versatility makes it suitable for a wide range of other purposes. It is popular among gun enthusiasts, gunsmiths, and hobbyists because of it provides a tough, corrosion-resistant layer that protects firearms from rust, wear, and environmental damage, especially in humid or coastal areas.
Aluma-Hyde is vailable in a variety of colors and finishes, including matte, satin, and camo patterns, Aluma-Hyde allows users to personalize the appearance of firearms and any other outdoor equipment. As the name suggests, Aluma-Hyde is particularly effective on aluminum parts, such as AR-15 receivers like what I used mine for because it ensures a strong and lasting bond without the need for extensive priming or blasting like cerakote.
Aluma-Hyde’s rugged properties make it suitable for protecting outdoor equipment, tools, knives, firearms, flashlights, or anything else needing a durable shell on it because of high use or use outdoors. Once cured, the finish is extremely resistant to chemicals, moisture, and abrasions/rubbing/scratches similar to cerakote.
The range of available colors and finishes allows for customization, from tactical tones like flat black and olive drab to more vibrant options. To achieve the best results, proper surface preparation is essential. This involves cleaning, degreasing, and sometimes sanding the surface. Aluma-Hyde requires a curing period (up to 14 days) to reach full strength by air curing or 3 hrs in an oven at 190°F which can be a drawback for projects needing quick turnaround. Additionally, it is not ideal for parts exposed to extreme heat, such as barrels or exhaust systems.
In conclusion Aluma-Hyde is a versatile, durable, and user-friendly solution for coating and protecting various materials. Its applications span from firearms to outdoor gear, automotive components, and DIY projects, offering long-lasting protection and customization. With its ease of use and tough finish, it has become a trusted choice for enthusiasts and professionals alike.
I personally used Aluma-Hyde on 80% AR15 lowers and will be using it her very soon to cover up a horrible cerakote job someone did for me a few years back. I personally like DIY projects as it helps me learn more about the item and gives my a more personal connection to it. At $20 Brownells Aluma-Hyde males for a very economical solution to customizing your metal items.
Also please be sure to check out my three part series on YouTube regarding Brownells Aluma-Hyde. Simply search "TypicalPNWGuy" then scroll to said videos! Thanks for reading and I'll see you guys next week!

Unit 3 Blog Post
I can define privilege as an advantage given to an individual or group of individuals that has nothing to do with their previous actions or inactions. Privilege can be viewed as a “head-start” for certain individuals even though they have not “earned” this said head-start.
As I discussed in my last blog post, there are many barriers and hurdles that must be crossed in order to truly experience the outdoors to the fullest extent. Economic, knowledge and skill barriers are among just a few hurdles. However, the biggest one may actually be privilege.
For starters, I am a white, male living in a highly developed rich country, Canada. This alone is a huge privilege, and I am extremely lucky to be able to experience the outdoors in this beautiful country. I am not particularly financially privileged, however, and have had to take multiple semesters off to work and save money to afford to go to school again later on. Engaging in this struggle made me realize that this is pretty much the only thing I’m not privileged to have, so by those standards, I am still extremely lucky and privileged, even though my financial situation is not great.
Upon reading the text for this unit, I was surprised to learn that many of these children involved in the outdoor program live very close to the ocean but have never been able to see it with their own eyes until enrollment in the program (Beck et al., 2018). This astounds me as if I lived near an ocean I would most definitely be exploring and seeing all of what it has to offer! But I do understand that these children do not have the same privilege as I do. Many of these children seem to have lower socioeconomic statuses and their families just cannot afford to do extracurricular activities and recreational activities in the same way I did while growing up. Even though my family is not “rich” by any means, we still had enough extra money in our budget to go camping every so often or visit the local conservation authority for the weekend. Many people with less privilege just cannot do these things, and it is no fault of their own. This is why camping, paddling, hiking and other outdoor activities just cannot be done by everyone. Many people would love to try these activities, but just cannot due to no fault of their own. To have a safe, enjoyable time, the proper gear is required, which is very expensive (believe me, I’ve spent a little too much than I want to admit…). Privilege is the largest barrier preventing nature's exploration and enjoyment, and I believe everyone should be able to see everything nature has to offer.

Best 8 person camping tent
Best 8-Person Camping Tent: Your Guide to Group Adventures
Introduction
Camping is a fantastic way to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life, connect with nature, and create lasting memories with friends and family. However, when it comes to camping with a group, having the right gear becomes crucial, especially a spacious and comfortable tent. An 8-person camping tent is perfect for accommodating larger groups, providing ample space for sleeping and storage while still being easy to set up and take down.
In this blog post, we’ll explore what makes an 8-person tent the best choice for group camping, key features to consider, and some top recommendations that can enhance your camping experience—whether you’re headed to a family campground or a scenic spot like nirwana stays.
Why Choose an 8-Person Tent?
Space for Everyone: One of the most significant advantages of an 8-person tent is its spaciousness. When camping with a large group, it’s essential to have enough room for everyone to sleep comfortably. These tents not only fit sleeping bags but also allow space for personal belongings and gear, helping you stay organized and comfortable.
Convenience: Sharing one tent simplifies logistics. Rather than managing multiple tents, cooking areas, and shared spaces, an 8-person tent allows everyone to come together under one roof. This is particularly beneficial for families with young children or friends looking to bond around the campfire.
Cost-Effectiveness: Buying one larger tent can be more economical than purchasing several smaller ones. An 8-person tent can be used for years and for various camping trips, providing value for your investment.
Key Features to Look For in an 8-Person Tent
Size and Layout The primary reason for choosing an 8-person tent is its size. Before you make a decision, check the tent’s dimensions. Some models offer cabin-style designs with vertical walls that provide better headroom, making it easier to stand and move around inside. If possible, opt for a tent with room dividers, as these can create a sense of privacy for different groups or families sharing the space.
Weather Resistance Nature can be unpredictable. The best 8-person camping tents are designed to withstand a variety of weather conditions. Look for tents with a rainfly, waterproof floors, and sturdy construction to keep you dry during unexpected rain. Features like reinforced seams and robust poles are also critical for ensuring your tent remains intact in windy conditions.
Ventilation Good ventilation is crucial in an 8-person tent, especially when accommodating several people. A tent with mesh windows and vents allows air to circulate, reducing humidity and condensation buildup. This feature is particularly important if you’re camping in warm or humid climates, ensuring everyone stays comfortable throughout the night.
Ease of Setup After a long day of hiking or driving, the last thing you want is to struggle with tent assembly. Look for tents with intuitive designs, such as color-coded poles and pre-attached setups. Instant tents that can be pitched in minutes are particularly useful for those looking to maximize their time outdoors. A simple, quick setup means more time enjoying your surroundings and less time dealing with equipment.

The Role of Privilege in Nature Interpretation
Privilege is described as unearned advantages or rights awarded to specific individuals or groups based on race, gender, social status, or geographic location. These advantages are sometimes overlooked by individuals who benefit from them, even though they have a considerable impact on many parts of life, including the interpretation and appreciation of nature.
Nature interpretation is educating and engaging people in the natural world through activities such as guided tours, educational programs, and interpretive signage. The purpose is to promote a deeper understanding and appreciation for nature, as well as to encourage conservation and sustainable practices. However, privilege can have a significant impact on the effectiveness and accessibility of these interpretive efforts.
One of the most obvious forms of privilege in nature interpretation is access to natural settings. People from more fortunate backgrounds frequently have better access to parks, nature reserves, and other green spaces. They may reside in areas with plentiful natural resources or have the ability to travel to remote natural sites. In contrast, marginalized populations may live in urban regions with few green spaces, making it difficult to connect with nature daily.
Privilege also influences the educational opportunities that are accessible for learning about nature. Schools in wealthy communities frequently receive more funding for field trips, outdoor education initiatives, and environmental science courses. Students who attend these institutions are more likely to receive comprehensive nature education, which fosters a lifetime appreciation for the environment. In contrast, underfunded schools may lack these resources, restricting kids' access to nature and environmental education.
The voices and views portrayed in nature interpretation are frequently impacted by privilege. Nature interpretation has traditionally been dominated by Western, Eurocentric perspectives, which may not resonate with or include the experiences of other groups. This lack of representation can alienate people from various cultural backgrounds, making them feel alienated from the story of nature conservation.
Economic privilege might also limit one's ability to engage in nature interpretation activities. Guided tours, nature seminars, and outdoor gear can be expensive, making them inaccessible to persons with little financial resources. Because of this economic difference, those with lesser incomes may miss out on essential interpretive experiences that would improve their connection to nature.
To foster a more inclusive and equitable approach to nature interpretation, it is critical to recognize and address the role of privilege. Here are some strategies to consider.
Marginalized communities should have better access to natural spaces. This can involve expanding urban green spaces, providing affordable transportation to nature reserves, and delivering free or low-cost environmental programs.
Nature interpretation programs should try to offer a variety of viewpoints and cultural narratives. This can be accomplished by working with community leaders, utilizing indigenous knowledge, and emphasizing the contributions of underrepresented groups to environmental protection.
To make nature interpretation more accessible, organizations can provide scholarships, sliding scale fees, or free events to low-income participants. Furthermore, providing affordable or loanable outdoor equipment might help to alleviate financial constraints.
Ensuring that wildlife interpreters and instructors come from varied backgrounds can create a more inclusive atmosphere. Representation is important, and seeing people from comparable backgrounds in senior positions might motivate others to engage with the environment.
Recognizing and addressing the role of privilege in nature interpretation can help us move toward a more inclusive and equitable approach that allows everyone to connect with and appreciate the natural world.
