It is a weird thing to think about how often we are reading and how useful reading skills are and how hard life would be if we couldn't.
As soon as i wake up i think i am reading, reading the time on my phone.
daily i would check a few different modes of social media, reading Facebook updates, writing birthday messages, checking instagram and snapchats many of which have writing on them.
Even when watching the news reading headlines and towns relating to the weather.
I also engage with normal text as in books, with nannying read to the 3 children at least one book each with their varying age this texts are all at different level, reading to the children at night time is one of my favourite things to do!
there is also uni corse work which we engage with along with emails and texts messages along with road signs packaging on food items and even on appliances like a hair dryer and microwave.
it would be very difficult to do many daily tasks without reading, i think we take the skill of reading for granted, it is a way to communicate, educate, directions, instructions and share stories.

PROMPT 3 RESPONSE
The ways that I have made meaning from text in the last week include text messages, email, Facebook messaging, reading the sports section of the newspaper and many more. There are many ways that I make meaning from text. There are a lot of ways to make meaning from text online and through social media. Readers make meaning of a text in different ways, I make meaning from text based on my interests.

Prompt 3
ECL310 Prompt
Admittedly I use Facebook to do most of my reading. I don’t really use it as a social tool, more like a political tool. I have many friends from different countries, most of who are politically motivated so it’s a great way of networking and not relying on local news sources.
I’ve also checked my emails numerous times, had text messages from family and friends, read a novel by Alan Dershowitz, read an online recipe for chocolate chip cookies along with a book on baby names.

ECL310 2016 PROMPT 3
It is amazing how much reading and writing is present in our lives when we sit and think about it.
In the past week I have read in so many different forms...
- text messages
- facebook
- emails
- newspapers
- novels
- school texts
- students’ work
- letters and cards
- signs
- forms
This is what pops into my head first and I am sure there is a list twice as long that I have read but not paid attention to. I believe reading and understanding is something that we take for granted, I know I do. When I travelled overseas last year I remember being so frustrated when I could not read and understanding writing in countries that possess languages that I cannot speak. Translating everything was time consuming and frustrating and I longed for a sign or piece of information in English that my eyes could see and interpret immediately. After that experience I had an insight into how a young child must feel when they are first learning to identify letters and beginning to read. It is only when it is taken away from you that you realise how much you rely on being about to see and interpret written text in the many different forms it can be delivered in.

You don't really think about how much you read in a week! it has been a crazy week of assignments, so so many journal articles!! I have been reading a lot of dinosaur encyclopedias with the boys who I babysit, who are absolutely obsessed with dinosaurs at the moment!

This is a short video which shows what I have been reading this week. Please note the music in the background is not my own and I make no claim on it. However, the owner of the song has made it a free download for everyone and given permission for its use. (see: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KMHrXPJEntI)

Reflection 3
When looking at the topic for reflection this week there are so many different fields and varieties of text that I have engaged in reading, however the most influential and memorable would have to be the newspaper.
This past week the newspaper has been ever-present within my household, as it contains all that of the olympics with is definitely a current talking point. Not only has this topic been evident within our newspapers but it has also been very substantial on social media. Passages of social media that I have experienced reading on over this past week have been; Facebook, twitter and Instagram.
The final element of reading that I have done over this week is through studying and completing assignments. Through completing these there were many different mediums of text that I was able to experience. Those included; Powerpoint slides, textbooks, and also blog posts upon the Deakin Cloud.

Within my past week I have experienced multiple aspects of literacy text. I have been exposed to multiple forms of text on screen, from Facebook to emails and just reading the news, I have exposed myself to reading theoretical journals, student work, novels, educational text, text messages, social media text such as snapchat and Instagram. I have also been exposed to text within football matches on screens and billboards, on the train seats and surroundings as traveling to the MCG, and many more forms of text. Out of all of the forms of text I have been and have exposed myself to, the most common text I have used within the week has been phone text followed by theoretical journals. It wasn't until I sat and really bought about the places I have been exposed to text, when I realised how we are influenced so heavily everyday by visual literacy in which we encode into meaning to produce our own understanding of the world around us through text.

The main text forms I use to communicate with my peers and family are generally via social media platforms or text message. I have sent a few emails for more formal purposes such as to university and the mentor teacher at my placement school (and received many, many spam emails). Last night I attended an information session so the text there was mostly displayed on a PowerPoint presentation (these have also been seen in my seminars and lectures). I have read various online articles (some journal, some on general websites) and, of course, MANY pages and chapters of textbooks. I believe I flipped through a newspaper but I think I just looked at the pictures and briefly read the captions. To make meaning and gain understanding I have read texts including my gym timetable (online and printed versions), menus, recipes, the TV guide on my TV, parking signs, eBay product descriptions, and I’m sure many other things which I haven’t considered here… It’s amazing how much we read without even thinking about it!

WEEK THREE REFLECTION
MAKING MEANING OF TEXTS:
Textbooks
Text messages
Facebook
Emails
Menus
Books
Street signs
Work Roasters
Super market isles
Newspaper
Train timetables
Food labels
We read a wide range of texts throughout a day. This can simply be reading your alarm clock as soon as you wake up in the morning or when you go the supermarket. If you drive there you need to read the street signs, the parking signs to ensure you can park there and for how long, looking at you shopping list, finding the items, looking at what isle they are in, seeing how much they are, finding the correct money, looking at your receipt, going back to your car and driving home. Again looking at the signs and even in your car to ensuring you have enough petrol left to get you home.
As a result of this topic when teaching I will ensure to explore many different text types with students to allow them to realise there is so many different types of texts. Its not just the books we reading or the writing we have written.

This week i have made meaning from text in quite a few ways. firstly being back at uni I had to read many emails to catch up with everyone, as well as this i spent a lot time catching up reading over assignment details on the cloud so i am not behind. Most of my reading comes from assignments and emails, however i also text and receive messages on my phone and i have also recently being reading a men’s health magazine as my roommate has a subscription to it (i don't know why he doesn't read them).
