ECHO PARK, LOS ANGELES

Somewhere around 2011 @KatieVonderheide had a vision for having artists add murals outside, reflecting the work on display inside her East Hollywood gallery. Vonderheide turned to another gallery proprietor, Justin McInteer of Echo Curio, for help she told @VoyageLAMag , and together they began to execute murals when the "artists left it to the last minute." After collaborating on several pieces and getting more referrals from friends the pair launched @BeautificationSolutions , focusing on precision painting and refining their craft with each project—and always on the lookout for ways to beautify their community. In 2018 McInteer created this colorful hand-crafted wall on the side of his now-closed Echo Curio shop at Sunset and Laveta in LA's Echo Park neighborhood.  @justinmcinteer/

"EYES OPEN, MIND OPEN"

Unlike some in politics who might simply tell you not to believe what you're seeing, Shepard Fairey launched the OBEY sticker campaign 30 years ago, as an experiment in "phenomenology"—stimulating curiosity and asking people to see their surroundings more clearly. One of the most prominent urban artists of our time Fairey has never shied away from taking on important causes and using his talent or his Obey clothing line to support causes like @FeedingAmerica. A recurring message in Fairey's art is the admonishment to observe more deeply, even what is invisible to the eye. This all-seeing eye was created in 2017 in LA's Echo Park neighborhood, on Sunset Blvd overlooking Portia St.  @obeygiant/

ECHO PARK

When Bleu Avina was about 12 a new friend showed him his sketchbook and after that, Avina told @VoyageLAMag, “It was a monkey see monkey do a thing.” Avina loved trying new mediums and different techniques and was soon painting larger works as well as murals. At 22 Avina started playing guitar, struggling to find balance between art and music, and while he says he doesn’t really make any money from either he loves what he does: “I am not creating work for praise or fame like a lot of people seem to be doing in Los Angeles. I am doing it because it’s what I love and a part of my everyday life.” In 2016 at Echo Park Ave and Montana St, just a half-mile along Sunset Blvd from his day job at @MohawkLA, Avina created this mural so rich in symbolism and possible interpretations I expect some day to find out it relates to some haunting Avina song.  @bleu.avina/
