New American Dream

In 2004, filmmaker Alexander Payne published an article in Variety, “Declaration of Independents,” calling for the recovery of the ordinary citizen in cinema. He argued: “For some 25 years we've had American movies but not movies about Americans.” In essence, he seems to be highlighting a distinction between films that are set in America and those that deeply delve into the experiences, values, and complexities of American life and identity. Between 2002 and 2013, Payne's films have tried to enable a meditation on the social values of the American Dream while exploring a new domestic imaginary in post-9/11 America. Between 2002 and 2013, Payne's films, such as "About Schmidt" (2002), "Sideways" (2004), "The Descendants" (2011), and “Nebraska” (2013), can be seen as attempts to fill this perceived gap. In these movies, Payne explores various facets of American society and culture, often through the lens of ordinary, flawed individuals grappling with personal and societal challenges. In, “The Idea of ‘Success’ in the Humanist Cinema of Alexander Payne”, Pablo Echart said, “In addition to associating cinematic independence with the directorial voice, Payne issued an appeal for a realist cinema that would be “intelligent, uplifting and human”, capable of encompassing human experience and of offering people a star by which to steer a steady course through the tumultuous dawn of the 21st Century.” Payne's focus on the American Dream and the post-9/11 domestic landscape suggests a desire to engage with the evolving social and cultural dynamics of contemporary America. By examining themes such as family, relationships, ambition, and disillusionment, Payne's films offer a reflective commentary on the aspirations, struggles, and contradictions inherent in the American experience.
