Who gave them the right to tinker with life? Who corroded the innocence of the jewel that was once the soul of a child? The color of it - long lost, bleached and erased. What remains beneath the searing white, the searing hate and wrath and pain and damage - the reaching limbs of a void eager to reclaim what was never meant to see daylight. The tendrils of a void that coos for its failed child to come home. But the defiance forged in the blinding light and boundless dark will forever fight for what it was denied. And is it not that very fighting spirit that makes this soul so very distinctly human...? What, then, if not that brilliant duality of sin and love?

Living in a land of ice and snow often meant that people developed different tactics for getting through life then most people further south ever thought about. Those different tactics doubled when you included combat and survival training. But as far as Olivier Mira Armstrong was concerned, they were necessary tactics for surviving life up here. When there were new soldier assigned to Briggs, they were immediately put through the training. This included training in sustaining warmth, watching weather patterns, finding food and water, knowing the terrain, what to do in the event of an avalanche or falling through ice, and travel through or over snow and ice. The last catagory included things such as snowshoes, skiing and ice skating.

And although few people knew it--at least until after they were stationed at Briggs and went through the training--Major General Olivier Mira Armstrong was an unparalleled skater. And when she said that she wanted all people staying in her fort to go through this training, she meant all.

There was a frozen pond within sight of the fort, too small to be called a lake, yet big enough to do training on, and the right size to freeze over regularly. She was currently standing on it, ice skates on, arms crossed, and staring down at Edward Elric.

“Normally I’d wait until Buccaneer’s next training class, but something tells me you’re going to need to know this before then.” she said. “Tell me, Fullmetal. Have you ever been ice skating before?”

There was a child here.

A child, in the snow.

A child, here, in the snow, without any sort of warm clothing.

This was not a normal occurrence.

Olivier stared at the child for a few moments, evaluating it. It had a wild edge to it, but it didn’t seem wholly uncivilized. It was small, but there was an underlying fierceness to it, somehow. It brought to mind the stories she had read about feral children, although perhaps not to that degree.

What was it doing here?

Still, unusual or not, it didn’t seem to be a direct threat at the moment, so she slid out of her heavy winter coat and dropped it on the child. A child was a child, unless it was of age to choose to make adult decisions, and therefor was one of the vulnerable that should be protected. That was a moral that had been passed down the Armstrong Family line for generations.

Greed stares at Emmett for a long moment before speaking- he’s found the stash of sunflower seeds Roa keeps behind the counter and has snuck a small pile onto a napkin in front of him, and keeps casually flicking the seeds at patrons that drunkenly pass by, unaware of the tiny missiles bouncing off their backsides or heads.

He has to stifle a laugh.

“He used to flick sunflower seeds at people in this one restaurant when he was a kid. Got to sit by himself with another kid and they took turns trying to hit people in the back. One day another guest caught them doin’ it and asked where their parents were sitting, an’ the dumbass actually told the lady. They weren’t allowed to get sunflower seeds anymore after that.”
