Ebro Darden recently called out Drake for never saying anything about Black issues following Drake's diss toward Childish Gambino's song "This Is America" during his performance at the It's All a Blur Tour.
Ebro Darden Says Drake Never Says Anything About Black Issues
On July 12, Hot 97's Ebro Darden discussed how Drake never speaks up about Black issues while conversing with Nadeska Alexis and Lowkey on Apple Music's Rap Life Review series. In the clip, which can be seen below, the three hosts of the series spoke about Drake's shade toward Childish Gambino's 2018 single during Drizzy's set at the It's All a Blur Tour at Chicago's United Center. By the 19:23-mark of the video, Ebro Darden expressed that Drake has yet to take a stand for justice.
"Drake, who has never shown up, and y'all know I'm the biggest Drake fan on this show," Ebro Darden said in the video. "Drake has never shown up to have anything to say about anything going on in society with Black folks or anything other than himself."
The Rap Life Review hosts added that they don't expect Drake to speak on these important topics within the Black community because he hasn't done so in the past.

Drake Disses Childish Gambino's "This Is America" During His It's All a Blur Tour
On July 5, Drake took a shot at Childish Gambino at his It's All a Blur Tour stop at Chicago's United Center. During his set, one headline at the bottom of the stage displayed a message to the crowd: "The overrated and over-awarded hit song, 'This Is America,' was originally a Drake diss record." Childish Gambino admitted during an interview back in April with GQ magazine that "This Is America" started as a Drake diss.

Doja Cat Criticizes Parents for Bringing Children to Her Shows
Tumblr media
Image: Doja Cat / Social Media File Doja Cat took to X (previously known as Twitter) to address an issue that had apparently been bothering her: parents bringing their children to her explicit performances. The 28-year-old rapper made it clear that her music and shows are not intended for younger audiences. In a series of tweets, she expressed her frustration, stating, "IDK what the f**k you think this is but i don’t make music for children so leave your kids at home motherfucker ." She continued by questioning why parents would bring their children to shows where she performs explicit songs about adult themes. She further emphasized her point by mentioning the graphic nature of some of her lyrics, including references to sexual acts. Doja Cat bluntly stated, "im rapping about cm why are you bringing your offspring to my show ," and followed up with "rappin about eatin d*k and pissin on his v-cut, leave your mistake at home ." While the specific incident that prompted her tweets remains unclear, it seems that Doja Cat wanted to make it known that her performances are intended for mature audiences. This comes after her recent controversial performance at Coachella, where she closed out the second weekend with a provocative and explicit show. On social media people are discussing her crossing boundaries recently like in the visuals for “Paint The Town Red,” the Los Angeles native cozied up with the Grim Reaper while crooning, “Mm, she the devil/ She a bad lil’ b**ch, she a rebel.” Elsewhere, “Demons” from Scarlet prompted devil-worshipping allegations, which she addressed during an interview with Ebro Darden. “I did it on purpose, and it’s this big ruse to make people react,” she said. “When the f**k did I say that I was a Satanist? Or even go marching outside the church? When the f**k did I say that? It’s really tacky and annoying and discredits a lot of the hard work that I’ve put in.” Read the full article

(july 1996). i graduated from the university of cambridge with an mphil in social anthropology. i wrote a thesis on the relocalization of japanese immigrants in davao before world war 2. i owe a great deal of gratitude to dr. michaelangelo ebro dakudao, my sempai at the university of tokyo, for introducing me to members of davao kai, the association of japanese immigrants in davao, especially tanaka yoshio, the association's historian. through tanaka-san, i interviewed surviving members of davao kai all over japan before they passed away. i also frequented tanaka's yokohama flat, where i was given access to papers, pictures, and folders containing autobiographical narratives, constituting a huge chunk of my study. several times, tanaka brought me to his favorite japanese restaurant, where we had tempura, sukiyaki, and sashimi for lunch. we drank sake afterward. tanaka also assisted me in working on my original ph.d. dissertation proposal--a study on japanese immigrants in davao who accidentally settled in ecuador instead of proceeding to japan after the war. for this, i was accepted for ph.d. studies by five universities in the u.k. but i had been on study leave (with pay) from u.p. after being in tokyo and cambridge for three years. some local university authorities then informed me that i should go home and let other faculty members, who had been waiting in line, pursue their studies overseas because i had already been away. they also added that my dissertation topic was irrelevant to the thrusts of my academic department. “anthropology is not related to literature," they used to say. such was the state of mind in academia way back then. i reluctantly returned to the philippines to render my years of service to u.p. i got tenured and became a university administrator. after i graduated from cambridge, i returned briefly as a british council fellow at downing college in 2000. i have not gone back ever since.

R.I.P. Mister Cee
Tumblr media
Legendary New York hip-hop DJ Mister Cee has died at age 57.  New York radio station Hot 97 announced his passing but no cause of death was listed. Mister Cee also known as The Finisher was a key person during hip-hop's Golden Era. As a native of Brooklyn, New York he started his career in high school when he learned how to DJ from Knight and the Knights of Hollywood crew. He also met Big Daddy Kane at this time.  Kane's 1988 debut album, Long Live The Kane featured the young DJ on "Mister Cee's Master Plan" and he was the rapper's official DJ. In the '90s he became a radio DJ with hip-hop shows on Hot 97 and WBLS. He helped The Notorious B.I.G. re-record the demo that got him signed to Diddy's Bad Boy Records. B.I.G.'s Ready To Die debut listed Mister Cee as an associate executive producer. Mister Cee worked with 50 Cent, Jay-Z, Alicia Keys, Roxanne Shante, Masta Ace, MC Shan, and more.
He was an institution at Hot 97 working there for years until he resigned in 2013 after being arrested for soliciting sex from transgender prostitutes. His Throwback At Noon show was one of the most popular to ever air on the station. In an interview with Ebro Darden, he admitted to the truthfulness of the charges and was the first voice in hip-hop to openly embrace bisexuality. A brief return to Hot 97 in 2014 ended when he no longer cared for the musical direction of the station. Fans could hear his mixes online, at 94.7, and on the Sirius XM station Rock The Bells. The video game Grand Theft Auto IV had a character based on Mister Cee on radio station 102.7. The Beat.

Amassing over 400 million streams in the US during release week, SOS became SZA’s first No. 1 on the Billboard 200 (the second largest streaming week for a female artist and third largest of 2022 among all albums at the time), and dominated worldwide charts with No. 1 debuts in Canada, Netherlands, New Zealand, and more.  While SOS also debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top R&B Albums and Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts, several tracks dominated song charts and playlists across digital service providers, with standout track “Kill Bill” earning SZA her first No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 and Global 200 charts. Currently RIAA-certified 3x Platinum, SOS includes features by Travis Scott, Don Toliver, Phoebe Bridgers and Ol’ Dirty Bastard; with production by Ctrl hitmaking collaborators ThankGod4Cody and Carter Lang, alongside Jeff Bhasker, Rob Bisel, Benny Blanco, Kenny “Babyface'' Edmonds, Emile Haynie, Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins, Jay Versace, and more. The launch of SOS fostered a series of new achievements for the dynamic global icon.  SZA peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Artist 100 chart as the most popular artist across all musical genres, and No. 1 on the Hot 100 Songwriters chart. SOS broke the record for the most weeks at No. 1 by a woman on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums chart, and the first R&B album to spend ten non-consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 this century. SOS yielded four No. 1 hits at both Rhythm and Urban Mainstream radio - “Snooze,” “Kill Bill,” “Shirt,” and “I Hate U.”  SZA closes out 2023 as the most Grammy nominated artist of the year with a total of nine, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year for “Kill Bill,” Album of the Year and Best Progressive R&B Album for SOS, Best R&B Song for “Snooze,” and more. A multitude of critical praise complemented the remarkable success of SOS, inclusive of ranking No. 1 on several best-of lists in 2022 and 2023. Variety described the album as “cinematic in its scope and tone as it ripples with elements of folk, jazz, pop and ambient electronica and brings in undertones of even surf, trap, grunge and AOR rock,” while the Associated Press proclaimed “SZA proves in ‘SOS’ she still a voice of this generation.” Her first ever arena tour in the US and overseas sold out in minutes and garnered similar rave reviews. The New York Times called her Madison Square Garden headlining debut “vigorous, confident, theatrical and intimate – the sort of show that manages the rare trick of feeling both vibrantly communicative and also protectively insular,” while Billboard declared that the performance “delivered a message that she’s truly made a next-level step in her career.” In 2017, SZA released her major label debut album Ctrl (TDE/RCA). Revered for its raw and honest lyrics, it landed at No. 1 on Billboard’s R&B Albums chart, No. 2 on the R&B/Hip Hop Albums chart and No. 3 on the Billboard 200 chart. Black Twitter reacts to Jack Harlow finding out Brandy and Ray J are siblings in wild Hot 97 interview
Jack Harlow might want to log off from social media for a few days and listen to some 90s R&B.
Tumblr media
Black Twitter is not happy with Jack Harlow right now. Today (May 11), jaws were dropped when the “First Class” rapper discovered the Vocal Bible Brandy and entertainment mogul Ray J were siblings.
While visiting New York’s Hot 97 radio station, radio host Ebro Darden and crew challenged Harlow to a little game of guess that song.
As Darden cues up Brandy’s 1998 hit, “Angel in Disguise,” most figured it would be an easy win for the 24-year-old. They were wrong. Very wrong.
Darden and his co-hosts are seen nodding their heads to the tune as they give Harlow a chance to play the game.
“Oh, uh, Aaliyah?” Harlow asks.
“Nope!” the hosts yell after Harlow confuses the two very different artists.
“Stay with it, stay with it,” they urge him while giving the young rapper another shot. Some sing along while waiting for his answer.
The intro to the song is almost over and Harlow still can’t name the artist or track. One of the hosts asks, “Do you want me to give him a hint?”
“She had a TV show. She starred in a TV show,” Laura Stylez tells him.
“Tell me another hint,” Harlow says. Rosenberg chimes in with, “Her brother is the reason a lot of people are famous.”
With no response from Harlow, Ebro adds, “Her brother had an amazing sex tape.”
After several seconds go by, the “What’s Poppin” rapper asks, “Who’s Ray J’s sister?”
The hosts are shocked. While some throw their heads back with laughter, another can be heard saying, “Yo, he’s serious.” One host comes to his defense reminding listeners that Harlow is only 24.
“Brandy and Ray J are siblings?” Harlow asks as those in the room yell “Yes” in unison.
“Nobody’s ever told me that in my life,” the rapper responds.
Once Twitter got wind of the interview, they were flabbergasted. Most users seemed to feel that Harlow not recognizing the song was absurd.
“Not recognizing Brandy’s voice is why he shouldn’t be doing black music,” one person tweeted. Another added, “Brandy had one of the most recognizable voices. Ugh these generations of rappers.”
Others went a bit easier on the rapper. “Y’all are doing a LOT about Jack Harlow not knowing Brandy and Ray J. As if we don’t see young Black people ‘discover’ new things daily. Hell y’all find out Bobby Caldwell is white every three months.”
Take a look at what Black Twitter is saying about the revelation.

Jack Harlow not knowing Brandy got y’all blaming Gen Z when ALL of us know her and that she’s related to Ray J… That’s a JACK HARLOW PROBLEM! — WILD ebony. (@BEYMANll) May 11, 2022

jack harlow is WHITE! him being 24 don't got nothing to do w him not knowing brandy and ray j are related, i'm 19 and i know that. as much as he tries to infiltrate black culture or whatever y'all can't forget that he is white at the end of the day — 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐞 𝐍𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭 🧙🏾‍♀️ (@theenarcissist) May 11, 2022
He wants to be performing Black music and hanging out in Black spaces, and doesn't know who Brandy is or what her voice sounds like?  Stupsee — Carolyn Hinds – Pettite Possee🇧🇧 (@CarrieCnh12) May 11, 2022
Jack Harlow is a 12 year old white boy so him not knowing who brandy is isnt crazy. But do artists not….study music??? — jennysayQuan (@notKissmequan) May 11, 2022

For Jack Harlow to not know Brandy is one of the whitest things ever.  This man gets to frolic like an elf with absolutely no devotion to the genre or craft. — Queer Latifah 🥭 (@TheAfrocentricI) May 11, 2022
Brandy had one of the most recognizable voices. Ugh these generations of rappers🙄 — Freakboi (@Freakboi14) May 11, 2022

Drake is being called out by radio personality Ebro Darden, who believes the Toronto native has never “shown up” as an advocate for the Black community.
Ebro appeared on Apple Music’s “Rap Life Review” series where Drake’s recent jab at Donald Glover/Childish Gambino came into question. Drake was performing at Chicago’s United Center earlier this month as part of his “It’s All a Blur” tour when fans noticed a headline referencing Glover’s past admission that his 2018 single “This is America” initially started as a Drake diss.
“The overrated and over-awarded hit song ‘This Is America’ was originally a Drake diss record,” the headline read.
While Glover originally penned the song with the intent to diss Drake, it ended up becoming a creative delve into Black people’s history of fighting for justice, which prompted all the praise it received.
With Drake taking aim at the socially conscious song on his current tour, Ebro called out the Grammy award-winning rapper for seemingly staying quiet on issues of importance within the Black community.
“Drake, who has never shown up, and y’all know I’m the biggest Drake fan on this show,” Ebro said around the 19:23 mark of the video.
“Drake has never shown up to have anything to say about anything going on in society with Black folks or anything other than himself.”
The hosts defended Drake saying the “Nonstop” rapper has never spoken up on issues within the Black community and they wouldn’t expect him to now. A debate started on Twitter with one Drake fan responding to Marc Lamont Hill who believed Ebro was “100% correct.”
Noting one of Drake’s old interviews where he explains why he’s not more “outspoken” about political issues.
“I prefer to talk about it amongst my people,” Drake said at the time.
“And if we’re going to do something, I prefer to go make the change or actually do something and not just post about it.”
Not my discussion to have for obvious reason but thought I’d include this clip for reference pic.twitter.com/hf4rhfIje4 — jesus (@JAUjr) July 17, 2023
Noting his actual community work as “legit” and “on the ground,” the “Hotline Bling” rapper believes his work isn’t credited because he’s not posting about it on social media for public approval. In March Drake donated $1 million in Bitcoin to the LeBron James Family Foundation. In 2020, Drake donated $100k to the National Bailout Initiative. Most notably, in 2018, Drake donated his entire $1 million video budget to strangers in his “God’s Plan” visuals, with the donation helping one girl attend college.

Lil Uzi Vert Hasn't Fulfilled 'Rockstar' Potential, Ebro Claims: 'I'm Still Waiting'
Lil Uzi Vert still hasn’t fulfilled their self-proclaimed “rockstar” potential, according to Ebro Darden. During a recent panel discussion, footage of which surfaced on Monday (October 14), the Hot 97 and Apple Music host revisited his viral 2016 interview with the Philadelphia rapper, during which they declared themselves a “rockstar” while refusing to freestyle over “old” Hip Hop beats. Eight…
