Dr. Thomas Winston Cole, Jr. (January 11, 1941 - April 14, 2022) was born the second of four children to Eva and Thomas W. Cole, Sr., in Vernon, Texas. The family moved to Marshall, Texas, where his father was appointed President of Wiley College (1958-71). During his childhood, he attended public school and was an active Eagle Scout.

He graduated from high school and attended Wiley College where he was active in the Beta Kappa Chi and Alpha Kappa Mu Honor societies. Graduating summa cum laude from Wiley College, he received his BS and the Southern Regional Fellowship. He attended the University of Chicago and earned his Ph.D. in organic chemistry; it was here that he studied with P.E. Eaton and they became the first chemists to synthesize the Cubane Carbon Skeleton System.

He began his professional career in 1966 as an assistant professor at the Atlanta University Center. He would serve as chairman of the Department of Chemistry (1970-79), the Fuller E. Callaway Professor of Chemistry between (1969-79), Chair of the Atlanta University Center chemistry department; and Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs (1979-82). He worked as a research scientist for Procter & Gamble and the Celanese Fiber Company. He was president of West Virginia State College (1982-86). Following his presidency, he was appointed Chancellor of the West Virginia Board of Regents, one of four African Americans to head a state system of public higher education.

He returned to Atlanta to accept a position as president of Clark College and led the oversight and planning for the consolidation of Clark College and Atlanta University. He served as president of both institutions during the (1988-89) academic years until he was appointed President of Clark Atlanta University (1989-2002). Jfc, this is more complicated than driving a truck with an Eaton fuller 18 speed

Behold! My latest Bad Keyboard, the ShiftKeyBoard!

It's got nine buttons, and an 8-way gear shifter. You simply shift into different gears to select which sub-keyboard to use. Surprisingly easy to use, in fact.

Here's the layout I used:

Two more things:

1. the numbers under each gear position image are an implementation detail for the gearshifter I used, which I had on my guide image to help me code it.

2. the funniest thing I discovered is that you have to shift into neutral before reprogramming the keyboard or it wouldn't work right. I kept leaving it in first gear which caused problems, where it would only recognize 1 and 4th gear.

This year for International Mountain Day, we are recognizing that “women move mountains” and play a key role in mountain communities around the world. Women like Fay Fuller, the first woman to summit Mount Rainier, and Alma Wagon, the park’s first female climbing guide, paved the way for generations of women to challenge themselves– and the conventions of their time– on the slopes of Mount Rainier. Suffragists attending the 41st Annual American Woman Suffrage Association convention joined members of The Mountaineers to summit Mount Rainier in July, 1909. Dr. Cora Smith Eaton carried a "Votes for Women" pennant on the climb to fly at Mount Rainier's snowy crater. Inspired in part by this climb, Washington State passed a law to allow women to vote in 1910, which helped revitalize the national suffragist movement. How have mountains like Mount Rainier inspired you?
