The sun was nearly resting for the night and the event was just getting started. All of the lights were flashy, the rides were going, and people laughing as well as screaming from having fun and being on the rides.
"Is this going to be too much for you?" Cecil broke the silence.
"N-No. No, sir." Donald reassured him.
"Donald, we aren't at work. You don't need to call me, sir." Cecil reminded Donald with a small smile.
Donald softly smiled back.
The two of them had just arrived and there was a lot of people here. Granted it was a Friday night but it was the only time they would be able to go together. Both Cecil and Donald worked hand and hand at the GDA and it was a bucket of stress 24/7. It wasn't until they started going on lunch together and even hanging out after hours that there was a spark between them. A very powerful spark. They confirmed their feelings for each other not too long ago but wanted to take it slow, feel it out for a while and go out and do stuff, like they were right now. Cecil only asked Donald that because, despite in the field of work he is, crowds tend to overwhelm him and Cecil just wanted to make sure Donald was okay. They weren't really officially together but Cecil was already taking on that role of being Donald's significant other. Little did Cecil know, Donald was doing the same for him.
"Was there anything specific you wanted to do, si-I mean-Cecil?" Donald asked, breaking work mode out of him.
Cecil took notice of that, softly chuckling to himself.
"Yes, actually." Cecil answered.
Donald followed Cecil as they went to do whatever Cecil wanted. The fair was Donald's idea but he wanted to make sure Cecil did what he wanted to do. In fact, Donald didn't care what they did as long as they were together. They both arrived at one of the food tents, which piqued Donald's interest as to what Cecil was going to get.
"Welcome, what can I get you two?" The worker asked.
"Do y'all sell whole pickles here?" Cecil asked.
"We do."
"Okay, I will take a whole jar of pickles."
"You got it!" The worker said.
'A whole jar of ..pickles?' Donald thought.
Never in a million years did Donald think Cecil would order something like that.
"Anything else for y'all?" The worker asked.
Cecil turned with a light and soft expression on his face, his blue-grey eyes staring right through Donald's lenses. Donald felt put on the spot a little bit but he knew Cecil was just making sure Donald did or didn't want something.
"Just a hotdog is fine with me." Donald answered.
"Throw in some deep fried Oreos and a funnel cake for me please." Cecil added as he took out his wallet.
'Funnel cake? Cecil doesn't like funnel cake.' Donald thought to himself.
Cecil paid for the food and after just a few moments the food was ready. The hotdog and pickles came first.
"Here you go. Do you want any ketchup or anything like that?" Cecil offered.
"Oh uh no, just the way it is is good, Cecil."
Cecil then handed the hotdog to Donald. His fingers gently grazed Donald's for a second, causing Donald's heart to leap for a millisecond. The feeling was foreign to him and it nearly made him shake.
"Th-Thank you."
Cecil noticed Donald's stuttering. For the years they have worked together, Cecil knew Donald only did that under intense or emotional situations. So the fact he was stuttering now concerned him slightly.
"Are you-Oh thank you." Cecil was cut off by being handed the Oreos and funnel cake.
Cecil then handed Donald the funnel cake, which furthered Donald's rapid heartrate.
"I didn't think this was for me."
"Well, it is. Deal with it." Cecil said with a smirk as they both walked off with their food.
Despite Cecil's restlessness, they both found a table to sit at and eat. Cecil has never gone out and do something for himself let alone with a..date. I guess this would be considered a date. Cecil was always so busy dealing with stuff he never had the time to go out and do anything, let alone catch feelings for his coworker. He never would've imagined it, not in a million years.
"Cecil?"
How did he manage to catch feelings for his right hand man? Was it the way he was loyal to him? Or the way his eyes sparkled upon making eye contact with him? Or the way Donald never once underestimated Cecil and for what he does?
"Cecil."
Cecil was immediately knocked out his deep thoughts. He made eye contact with Donald who had a concerned, but soft expression on his face.
"Are you okay?" Donald asked.
"Yeah, Donald. I'm alright." Cecil answered as he started to chow down on the pickles.
Donald was morbidly surprised seeing his boss, and possible new partner, go to town on some pickles. He couldn't recall if Cecil ever mentioned liking pickles or maybe he did this because he has never had a chance to order junk food at a food tent at a fair. Cecil didn't open up much. Hell, him confirming similar feelings and agreeing to this was the most he has ever opened up to Donald. Donald started eating on his food as Cecil was nearly done with his pickle jar.
Slrrrpp
Donald nearly choked on his funnel cake seeing Cecil start to drink the pickle juice like it was water. Cecil took notice of Donald staring.
"Want some?" Cecil let out a soft chuckle seeing that.
"U-uh, I'm good, sir." Donald silently cursed at himself for calling him sir again.
It was a habit that would be hard to break if this goes anywhere.
Cecil chuckled to himself as he finished gulping down the pickle juice.
"Refreshing." Cecil said as he threw the jar away.
"Can I ask you something, Cecil?"
"Shoot."
"Have you ever been to a fair? At least, as an adult." Donald asked.
"Well, to tell you the truth, Donald. No, no I haven't. Not since I was a little kid. I will be honest, I don't even know what to do with myself here, but it's..it's a nice change of pace." Cecil gave Donald a warm smile in response, remembering that this was indeed Donald's idea.
Donald smiled back.
"O-Of course, Cecil. I'm happy to be able to give you that change of pace." Donald said.
Cecil's eyes wandered over the entire setting of the fair. There was some fair games as well as some rides. He didn't know what to do next, the possibilities were endless. Cecil began working on the fried oreo and thought of Donald.
"Fried Oreo?" Cecil offered.
"Oh, uh, no thanks. I am not super big on sweets."
"Really? These shits are basically my kryptonite."
Donald let out a soft chuckle, liking the tension between them. The two of them finally finished the rest of their food and tossed it into the trash.
"So what did you want to do next?" Donald asked.
Cecil sighed deeply.
"Lead the way."
"Are you sure?" Donald asked.
"Yep, but it's quite crowded here so I'm doing this so we don't get separated." Cecil said.
Before Donald could even respond, he felt Cecil snake his hand onto his, interlocking his fingers onto Donald's. Donald felt like his chest was going to explode and all of the words in his mouth ceased to exist. He couldn't do anything but look straight.
"Okay, Cecil." Donald held back, feeling as though this felt right.
It felt right. Cecil smiled upon Donald's reaction. He mostly did it to see Donald's reaction to it, but because he wanted to, though he probably wouldn't admit it. Donald led Cecil to a fair game which was a dart throwing balloon game. Cecil kept missing while Donald managed to hit a balloon every single time even without trying.
"Your aim is great, Donald." Cecil commented.
"I guess so."
They then went to a ring tossing game which Cecil was slightly better at but Donald still excelled at without trying.
"Is this some secret talent of yours you haven't told me about, Donald?" Cecil slightly teased.
"I uh guess so, sir." Donald said.
Cecil chuckled, keeping a grip hold on his hand. Cecil's eyes went to a food tent and Donald gently pulled him back towards him, making their shoulders touch.
"Oh come on, I can't have anything else?" Cecil joked.
"Well, you've had a lot this past hour that we have been here. I don't want you to get sick or anything." Donald said.
"Aw you taking a caring to me, Donald?"
Donald didn't respond, in fact he didn't know how to respond.
'You have no idea, sir.' is what Donald wanted to say but he didn't know if the timing was right or not. Cecil just chuckled upon Donald's silence. He knew he was giving Donald a hard time and he was slightly enjoying it. Donald stopped and in close view was the Ferris wheel.
"What are you thinking?" Cecil asked.
"Oh, only if you want to."
"That would be nice." Cecil agreed.
Donald and Cecil stood in line for the Ferris wheel. There was a lot of commotion going on around them and despite only being here for an hour, both of them were tired. They both decided that after the Ferris wheel they would both head home. Cecil eventually realized that they weren't holding hands anymore for whatever reason. He would've done it if it weren't for him feeling Donald's pinky curl around his. Cecil smiled to himself upon feeling that and took his hand into his. Eventually it was time for the two of them to get into a cart. Miraculously, the ride attendant let them sit side by side to each other and they had the whole cart to themselves. They slipped the protective belt onto themselves as the cart started taking them up and up with continuous stops. Cecil felt a sudden weight on his shoulder and was about to look until the ride came to a sudden stop.
"Damn, guess we are stuck up here." Cecil commented.
"Y-Yeah." Donald stuttered.
Cecil looked and found Donald sinking into the seat a little, looking completely straight ahead as if he was focused on something. It could only be one thing.
"Are you afraid of heights, Donald?" Cecil asked.
"A little." Donald mumbled, hoping Cecil wouldn't hear him.
"Really? I never would've expected that out of you."
"Well to be frank, sir, I didn't expect you to be a big sweets person." Donald fired back with, making Cecil chuckle.
"You're funny."
Donald smiled in response. There was an aching question in the back of Donald's mind that he was aching to ask. But Cecil took notice of Donald's slight shakiness.
"We will be down in a second, Donald. We aren't going anywhere." Cecil reassured Donald.
"Kind of funny. We stare at death all the time with our work and yet here I am trying not to have a panic attack over being stuck up high." Donald said.
"I know. You make those things easier though." Cecil admitted.
Donald turned and looked at Cecil. He wasn't sure what Cecil meant by that. If there was hidden meaning behind it or not.
"Sir?"
"Donald.."
Donald felt as though he said something wrong. He turned more to face Cecil. But then he remembered that he called him sir when Cecil has already told him multiple times to just call him Cecil. He has called him sir for many, many years now so it was hard not not to call him sir.
"S-Sorry-"
Donald was cut off in a second by Cecil. Cecil leaned in, holding Donald's cheek with one of his hands, and placed his lips onto his. Donald felt as though he was going to explode, he could hardly contain himself. His boss, his crush, his possible partner was kissing him. Cecil's lips were very rough and chapped against Donald's soft, smooth ones but he recuperated back. He kissed back, holding his hand tightly as if though if he didn't, Cecil would disappear. Donald didn't want Cecil to disappear. He couldn't bear it. The gap broke apart as Cecil pulled his lips away, slightly moving away from Donald, but keeping close.
"I don't think I have ever seen your face that red before, Donald." Cecil teased.
"I-It is?"
Cecil chuckled.
"I'm only playing."
Cecil couldn't believe it himself that he kissed Donald but he was even more happy that Donald kissed back. In that moment, there was temporary peace and quiet. It was just him and Donald in that minute and nobody else and it felt..great. Cecil has never had a moment of peace to himself before and he just got it, with his right hand man. Cecil couldn't really see it but he knew that even with those sunglasses on, Donald was staring right at him. His deep brown eyes staring into his blue grey ones. It all felt right. Donald squeezed Cecil's hand with some shakiness.
"What's on your mind, Donald?"
"Sir, Cecil.." Donald paused as he corrected himself. "Will you..will you give me a chance? I feel like we could work together. I won't let it get in the way at work. I promise you that. I just feel like we belong."
Cecil was surprised upon hearing Donald's confession but he took it in full swing. Donald leaned in and placed a delicate but soft kiss onto Cecil's hand. Feeling Donald's soft lips on Cecil's calloused but rough hand nearly made him cry. When was the last time he had this kind of moment with someone? It feels like forever. Donald looked back up and made eye contact back with Cecil, awaiting his answer.
"Yes." Cecil answered and kissed Donald again.
This time the kiss was longer and more passionate. It felt right, that's all they both could think. They only pulled away when the ferris wheel started back up and they started the decent down. As they both left the fair, their hands were interlocked together and they remained close. They were smiling at each other and even telling jokes to each other. Both of them were coming out of their shells and they both knew there was more to come for the two of them in the near future.
