I thought I posted this earlier but I guess it was just on Twitter! My CE from Super Rare arrived and it's gorgeous! Earthlock is such a fun game and it seems to go on sale regularly. It's definitely worth a purchase! And I'm not saying that because I own it across multiple platforms! 😝

I saw the game in my Humble Bundle and decided to give it a shot.  It’s available for multiple platforms, but I got it via Steam so PC for me.

Storywise, it starts out interesting, but after your Uncle Benjo gets kidnapped by a mysterious cult for some reason, the story practically drops off the face of the earth and so does any sense of character development.  You meet characters, get maybe a teaspoon of who they are and then nothing else and most of the time there’s barely any context to it that you see anywhere else.  Hell, even the VILLAINS don’t even get that sort of expansion.  Basically, it all boils down to the main character finds a mcguffin and the bad guy wants the mcguffin to end the world or something.  It’s like the writer of this game forgot that players want to get to KNOW their characters!  Even the ending is massively underwhelming.

Battles are turn-based and it’s one of the clunkiest things I’ve ever seen in a game.  If your game is so slow that you have to actively put in a FAST FORWARD BUTTON for the speed that makes the battles tolerable after a monster just lags after it does an attack, you just need to do something about the pacing in general.  Then there’s the concept of ‘changing stances’ which allows you to choose between your skill categories for each character.  THESE REQUIRE A TURN OF BATTLE.  This is absolutely ridiculous and can kill you because the battles in the latter portion of the game are so unforgiving.  Like bosses-can-nuke-you-in-a-single-attack unforgiving and there’s nothing you can do about it except try again until you’re lucky enough to get the right combination to beat them with.  I’m sorry, but for a game that thinks it’s inspired by any RPG, it should have AT LEAST put in an armor system so the player can possibly buff themselves up against the impossible when the Talents and Weapons won’t do a damn thing.  Basic encounters have the same unforgiveness too.  

Talents are another thing.  You get a map to expand upon your characters and this is how you raise your stats, which would be really good, if you didn’t top out at LEVEL 20, which leaves you only 20 spots to fill and possibly link to your skills.  I have missed out on a skill because there is no way to reset your talent board.  You can replace talent tiles you’ve already placed down, but if you screw up, you can miss things.  If you could level past 20, this would fix that easily, but you’re stuck with the harsh unforgiving results of just trying to unlock EVERYTHING like I normally do.  

Weapons.  Hey, guys, remember Final Fantasy 8 where you had to craft your weapons?  Yeah, Earthlock does this too.  Unfortunately, it’s horribly annoying to collect the materials for them and they STILL don’t do a lot.  You can quest to get the parts for your new weapons and come out with less stats than your original equipment!  NEW WEAPONS ARE SUPPOSED TO BE MORE POWERFUL!

Camera angles.  Alright, so in the dungeon areas, I’ve found these were fixed so that’s fine, but holy crap, the camera for the world map is terrible.  I’ve found myself caught in an annoyingly up close zoom when I’ve passed a cliff, leading to me to get ambushed by monsters and subsequently owned.  Any time I tried to manually change the camera angle was met with either no response, which prompted me to try again and finally get a slight change to the angle or it would battle against the game’s sense of what IT feels the camera angle should be when I’m walking the world map.  

After a bit of game progression, you unlock your headquarters basically where you can do a bunch of stuff like plant plants that can be used to make your arrows and ammo for Ive and Amon’s long-range weapons, have Amon craft weapons (which is almost useless), create Talents (hooray if you happen to have any listed to be created THAT IS USEFUL TO YOUR SITUATION) or the MOST USEFUL OF THE BUNCH is creating healing items.  

So, basically, I give Earthlock a 4/10.  It gets points for character art, which include the hogbunnies and hammerhead races, but loses a bunch of points for just being pretty horrible in terms of actual gameplay.
