This conversation.

1. The clashing views of Holden and Miller. Idealism vs realism. Is Holden too naive or Miller too jaded? As much as Holden wants to do the elusive right thing, to make it as it should be in a just and ideal world, Miller is quick to bring him down to the ground with actual evidence. But later in the book, there was evidence supporting Holden’s case too which Miller didn’t miss.

2. As much as Holden was denying the responsibility for giving a cause for the war to start with his transmissions since the Cant’s destruction, Miller doesn’t let him hide under those excuses. Holden has to face it. He justifies his actions with his righteous beliefs, but he needs to accept the responsibility for the consequences - which were only unfortunately unintended only because he didn’t think of them. He did what he thought was right without thinking what would happen.

3. What happens? That’s Miller’s whole point which he finally gets to tell him since he thought it on Ceres, that Holden has to start thinking ahead, to weigh the cost of his actions not just for himself and his crew. Because he’s involved in things much bigger than himself.

4. What Naomi/Julie would do? The parallel between what these women mean for them gets even stronger. The difference is that Holden actually asked Naomi what they should do and she made him figure it out himself because it was his job as a captain. Later on in the book, Holden did what he thought Naomi would but without asking her. Lol ;) Miller takes his advice even further, because he never got to ask Julie. All he has is the mental image he made of her based on all he learned and he made that his guide. She is his North Star.

I find Miller’s final conversation with Julie an interesting follow up to this because she asks him: “What happens on Venus?” and she tells him she’s afraid because she doesn’t know what will happen. But Miller comforts her. He says: “No one ever does. And look, you don’t have to do this alone.” It’s a case when facing an unknown, all we have is each other. When we need to just be brave. And for Miller this is quite significant last moment, because until now he made all the choices, especially the hardest ones, knowing exactly what he was doing and what he was getting into. That’s how he’s wired to be. Going after Julie was the most reckless and not well-planned thing he did.

The follow up on Holden’s side is even better.

“Well, I’m just guessing. But I doubt the things that built the protomolecule just wanted to store it here. This was part of a bigger plan. We saved the Earth, Mars, the Belt. Question is, what happens now?”

In the end, Holden took Miller’s advice to heart and he is the first to ask this question. To think of the consequences like Miller wanted him to.

tldr: This show gets confusing I’m glad to be able to pause it to notice details
