March 30
Spike and Suzy was first published in De Nieuwe Standaard on March 30,1945. The books revolve around the adventures of the eponymous Spike and Suzy, two children, along with their friends and family. The stories combine elements of comedy, fantasy, and science fiction, such as talking animals, time travel and ghosts. In the first regular comic, Suzy and her Aunt Sidonia meet the orphan Spike and unrelated Professor Barabas. Later they also meet Ambrose. In the earliest stories, Willy Vandersteen used fictional countries like "Chokowakije" ("Chocolaslovakia") and "Amoras" (a tropical island). He dropped the use of those after a few stories, although some later stories revisit Amoras.
Stormwatch is a secretive team of superheroes who tackle dangerous missions while remaining unknown to the larger superhero community. It was originally a United Nations (UN) "crisis intervention unit" founded as a successor to the Warguard. In the early 1970's, the UN's first orbital space station, Monitor One, was caught in the wake of a mysterious comet. Most of the station's staff were killed by radiation that penetrated Monitor One's shields, but a few survived and were altered by the event, changing form and gaining superhuman abilities. Out of the ashes of the Monitor One and Warguard disasters, John Windsor founded the Seedling program: A second generation of humans granted superpowers by the comet event were used as the core of a global peacekeeping force, StormWatch, operating from a giant orbital platform named SkyWatch.Stormwatch is overseen from a satellite by its director, the Weatherman. The Weatherman was Henry Bendix, who had cybernetic implants connected to his brain to better monitor the world situation and his Stormwatch teams in action. His field commander was Jackson King , an African-American telekinetic. Other founding members include Hellstrike, Winter, Fuji, and Diva. Stormwatch began in Stormwatch #1 (March 30, 1993).
