you know what i've been so obsessed with lately is like, gods being gods in ancient greece, right? and it's these same gods, in their roman forms, that were in the roman empire then too. so imagine some colonizers coming along and killing people to convert and talking about this One True God and calling them fakes and ???? i feel like in the ancient times that's a great way to bring the wrath of the gods upon you, they would not have stood for that.

idk i just keep thinking of a world where the gods showed up and rained destruction on the colonizers trying to enforce their religion and thus the monotheistic religion never becoming as dominant and "default" as it is now. what do you think that world would be like?

My wife told me I couldn't post the massive rant regarding syncretism, faith, and historical accuracy I went on in response to this for my own sanity and mental health

I DO appreciate what you’re (I think) trying to say, and very much parts could be interesting to explore. I just have studied and obsessed over this period too often :/

#please look up constantine #and the roman gods weren't just the greek gods in roman form as a 1:1 at all #the roman empire was an empire and colonized themselves #early art and forms of jesus may or may not be related to depictions of apollo #AND there already was a One True God in Roman times?????#Judaism is OLD and lets not erase it #Jesus was Jewish in Roman Judea #I spent far too much of my life being fascinated with Ponus Pilate #monotheism wasn't new with christianity #early christians in the roman empire were also themselves very persecuted #it's a whole thing #doesn't mean latter actions under the guise of christianity are at all justified #but it still happened #rome quite liked blaming christians #i mean there were the neronian persecutions #and the decian persecutions and diocletianic persecution #early christianty (and early faiths in general) is facinating #sdfghjkl #i need to stop #then of course there was and is zoroastrianism #and various Greeks spoke of monotheism and a god above others in a way that would influence later Christianity #and there’s so much much but too much for tags rip #my wife’s making me a drink so I shall actually stop
