Safe Ear Wax Removal
Ear wax is the sticky substance in your ear and for most people this is a gross substance that is yellowish in color and sometimes smells really awful. However, this substance is also the body's natural defense against foreign materials that enter the ear. As the body constantly produces ear wax, it accumulates and the old wax slowly moves up to the outer ear making it easy for you to scoop it out with a cloth or cotton buds.
Nevertheless, there are times when excessive ear wax is produced but the ear can't automatically push it outside. When this persists over time and you don't do anything, it can eventually cause hearing loss, pain, irritation and sometimes a ringing sound in the ears. If this happens, you will require some sort of safe ear wax removal procedure which you can do yourself.
There are plenty of people that use cotton buds to clean their ears. But, this is not an appropriate ear wax removal process. The reason is that you are actually pushing further in the wax instead of removing it with the use of cotton buds.
As time passes and the more you use cotton buds, the wax builds up and becomes harder and thicker making it harder for you to remove it. When this happens, there is a chance that your hearing will be impaired even more and it will be even harder to clean your ear in the future.
Another downside is that if you aren't careful with the ear wax removal process, then you may end up with a swollen and irritated ear. Always remember to clean only the outer ear and leave the inner canal alone.
One safely recommended ear wax removal process is by using a hot water bottle. Heat up some water and place it inside a small bottle. Make sure that it isn't too hot and then lay down on it for a few minutes. After about five minutes or so, the wax should have melted and can easily come out of the ear naturally. Make sure that you tilt your head at an angle that is enough for the wax to flow.
It is also advisable to rinse the ears with a few drops of warm water that is heated to match the normal body temperature. After the ear is all rinsed out, you can now wipe the wax from the external parts of the ear. But, this process only works if wax has not built up for a long time.

At Hearing First we NEVER syringe, as this is considered old-fashined and unsafe – the RNID says “Evidence shows that the 'syringing' method of ear wax removal, which was once commonly used across the NHS, is unsafe and should no longer be used.”

Ear Wax Causes and Cures
Ear wax has many advantages as it protects the ear drums from bacteria, dust and insects. Ear wax is produced by the glands in the ear canal and there is no need of removing ear wax. For most people ear wax sheds itself naturally during sleep. People who frequently move their jaws for talking or eating also can easily remove the ear wax in the process.
The problem occurs when the canal begins to build up too much wax. You would begin to experience discomforts such as pain and ringing in the ears. Ear wax can also produce other sounds that might bother you as well. If left untreated ear wax can also lead to balance problems and difficulty in hearing. It is better to get the ear wax removed when you experience such symptoms.
Ear infection can also occur as a result of ear wax. Yellow waxy build up tends to be a problem to some people. Aging can also cause this problem. Those people having narrow or hairy canals or those having inflammatory skin conditions can also have excessive ear wax. There are certain foods that help prevent too much waxy build up. A diet rich in omega 3 fatty acids can help in mitigating this problem.
Walnuts, flax seeds, avocados and few varieties of fish like tuna and salmon are very rich sources of omega-3 fatty acids. Dairy products may cause more wax production. You should get rid of wax to prevent possible infections. You can do this at home while taking a bath. You can tilt your head slightly while showering so that a small amount of hot water would run in one ear. Then allow the water to escape by tilting the head to the other side.
The same can be done with the other ear. This can also cause the wax to melt. There are also other natural remedies for this purpose. You can also use a few drops of heated olive oil into the ears. You should consult qualified ENT specialist to be able to do it correctly. Ear candling is another method by which ear wax can be removed. But some doctors often consider candling to be dangerous. Again, you should seek expert advice and assistance regarding this matter. The ENT specialist will be able to remove the wax in his clinic with the latest methods. This can be convenient and effective method to have ear wax removed.
