Backstory: Hartley was given an ultimatum when she came out to her parents as a lesbian: allow a matchmaker to find a husband for her or leave the family. Fortunately, she had just accepted a paid internship with Drs. Wells and Sterling and was able to couch surf with some college friends until her first paycheck. She and her work colleague and rival Francisca Ramon were invaluable in helping contain the accelerator explosion and her robotic rats helped search and rescue efforts in the parts of the building that were destroyed.
