In order to maintain relevance years past its release, the topic of a work must have a timeless aspect to it. So how does this short video project perfectly reflect the same struggles of today’s youth, as well as of the youth seventeen years ago?

‘Tommy-chat just E-mailed me’ is a seven-minute long videographic work by the artist Ryan Trecartin. Best described by the director himself, it takes place ‘inside and outside of an email’. Being stuck in the liminal time-space of 2006 United States of America, the work is a manifestation of the technological anxiety experienced by teenagers and young adults of the era. Its bizarre and maximalist visuals are reflective of the societal shift induced by new emerging devices, and the overwhelming experiences that come along with the futuristic becoming the tangible present. The ambivalent space that blurs reality and technology manages to stay relevant even today, seventeen years after its release.

The narrative video short features several different characters who are constantly speaking over each other and using multiple communication platforms to interact, making it extremely difficult to follow on the first watch. Sort of how the characters themselves are experiencing these new technological changes! So do not worry if one watch is not enough to comprehend this fast-paced work; the characters are experiencing the same struggle.

It begins with email interactions between Tammy, a white-faced blonde woman and her online lover, Tommy. The content of the email is displayed on the screen, as Tommy’s distorted voice narrates them, alternating from being pitched up and down. This soundscape is already setting the ambience of the outward y2k overwhelm of technological devices. Following the exchange, the spectator is taken into Tammy and Beth’s surreal pastel coloured room, which is filled with random art installations. Due to its chaotic and dreamy colour scheme, the space reminds of a childhood room, awakening a sense of nostalgia within the viewer. This is especially relevant today, as the technology they use intensifies this factor of early 2000s nostalgia, specifically considering that the age of the video’s target audience has remained the same. As young adults of that period saw relevance in their current struggles, young adults now yearn for their childhood years and the time of old-school flip-phones and simpler communication platforms.

As the two girls are talking over each other, Beth clearly utilises Google to search for activities, as during 2006 the amount of users of the search engine has almost doubled compared to the previous year. Meanwhile, there are plenty of visual and auditory effects adding to the technological disarray. The emergence of simple editing softwares enables the heavy and surreal modifications of the video short, which is characteristic for the period. As the arbitrary effects engulf the spectator, the non-diegetic becomes a part of the diegesis. Tammy and Beth are fully submerged in the non-space of the digital. The viewer is immersed into this fever-dreamy liminal vicinity of Tammy and Beth. And as if Trecartin felt the hypnotising power of small screens already in 2006, he ends the with a chant and a zoom-in on a sunset. You are finally out of Tammy’s email world.

The way ‘Tommy-chat just E-mailed me’ evokes the y2k nostalgia while simultaneously being extremely contemporary is both whimsical and nightmarish. The work reflects the inchoate digital metaverse in its conception. In the past seventeen years, technology has developed a lot. Will we ever get used to these changes?

Victor: Is that so? You’ve to be so efficient at work, yet you’ve been busying yourself with preparing birthday surprises for me for a while.

Victor: I saw that Goldman was texting you about ten days ago.

Victor: It seems that celebrating this birthday of mine is very troublesome for our big producer.

Victor’s voice, mixed with the notes of laughter, comes over the receiver. As I imagine the teasing look on his face while saying this, I can’t help laughing as well.

Just as the words are leaving my mouth, the taxi has already slowed down, pulling into the entrance of the driveway of LFG.

A hundred meters apart from each other, I see the person waiting at the door through the car window.

As soon as we enter the room, I immediately take the “birthday pudding” out of the cake box, place it on the coffee table and put the candles in.

After all this work is done, the wall clock reads the time 11:50.

I turn my head nervously and look out of the window. It’s only then do I feel relieved when I see the lights on all the floors of several buildings outside being turned off as appointed earlier.

All the surprises are already in order, now I just have to wait for the clock to strike zero.

Victor sits down next to me. Without saying a word, he brushes the strands of my hair behind my ear that were stuck to the corner of my lips, and smiles suddenly.

MC: What’s wrong?

His hand trails along the side of my ear to the nape of my neck, and he pulls me closer inadvertently. He then presses his lips against my forehead, dropping a kiss.

Victor: This is the first time having someone arranging to celebrate my birthday right after I got off the plane and came back to the office.

His lips are pressed against my auricle, leaving the residual warmth of his breath.

Victor: Being liked by a certain dummy– it’s indeed a good thing.

I tilt my head to the side, resting it against his chin.

MC: Dummies are always so easily satisfied, aren’t they?

Victor chuckles helplessly, and suddenly reaches out to pinch my chin–– knowing when to stop, I immediately change the topic.

MC: By the way, did the meetings go smoothly over the past few days?

MC: LFG is celebrating its anniversary this time, have you been swamped with works?

Victor lowers his head and gazes at me. Then he casts his line of sight towards the coffee table, indicating for me to look at the several stacks of documents on it.

Victor: Take a look.

I reach for the documents and flip through two pages.

MC: ....LFG’s strategic plans for the next few years?

And there are the current operations of some of the companies under the banner of its investment, and charitable funds.

Page after page, they all bear witness to how LFG has grown from a slim start-up plan to the current behemoth worth hundreds of billions.

Victor: Turn back that page again.

Following Victor’s words, I flip back a page and see the name of my company.

Victor: I’ve discussed this with you before.

Victor gazes at me quietly, his eyes carrying within them a smile.

Victor: You used to always ask me about what my wishes are.

Victor: The wish that I’ve always wanted the most has already been granted long before. So, my one and only wish is being able to continue with my current life.

Victor: Eating every meal.... celebrating every holiday together with a dummy.

He says as his eyes carefully scrutinize the materials in my hand.

Victor: But, there are indeed some things that I wish to do.

I read the charts and the texts on the PPT, thinking about the plan Victor mentioned to me several months ago.

In the dimly lit room, only the flames of the fireplace and the candlelight shimmer lightly, drawing our shadows on the walls as we stick against each other.

The date on the phone flips the page from January 12 to January 13 in a flash.

Victor takes my hand in his, folds it in his both hands, presses them against his chin, and closes his eyes slightly.

Victor: My wish is very simple, it’s....

Victor: I can never let go of this dummy’s hand.

Sensing that he tightens his grip on my hand a little more as he says this, I also can’t refrain from scooting closer to him, pressing my free hand against the back of his.

MC: The God of Wishes has been receiving a lot of work lately, and might be a little busy.

I gaze into Victor’s eyes as my own eyes brim with anticipation, trying to capture the long-awaited surprised expression in his eyes.

As we look out of the window from this angle, the lights flicker on the tall buildings across the street and a cake full of candles emerges on the walls.

After a few seconds, the candles stop burning, and the lights that formed the candles turn into multi-colored clusters of fireworks, blooming one after another on the walls.

Victor: ....you’ve prepared these as well?

MC: Come on, I will take you to the best sightseeing spot!

I nod triumphantly, and lead Victor as we trot up to the rooftop. As soon as I push the door open, the night breeze come flowing into my eyes, along with the resplendent buildings surrounding us all around.

With LFG standing as the centerpiece, the high-rise buildings encircling it from all sides constantly project flowers, fireworks, candles on their walls.

In the tranquil night, countless starlight twinkle silently, not disturbing the city that has already sunken into a deep sleep.

And I, in my own way, send the grandest blessings to the person most important in my life.

Victor looks around, seemingly startled by the battle happening before his eyes.

MC: Victor, come here!

I sit on a bench on the rooftop and spread out my arms, showing him these with the most brilliant smile plastered across my face. Victor can’t restrain the smile that crests on his face, and walks over to me slowly.

Victor: I see you are getting more and more noisy.

I can’t help but laugh as he drapes his coat over my shoulders, and bends down to tighten my collar for me.

MC: I’m getting more and more beyond your expectations.

A tender warmth envelopes me, and my heart can’t help but leap in thrill as I gaze into his eyes and see every cluster of light from all sides being reflected within them.

MC: I’ve thought hard for a long time about what I could give you.

MC: Whether it’s going to see the most beautiful scenery on this earth, or doing the most romantic thing– it doesn’t have to be your birthday to do them.

MC: In the end, the thing that came to my mind is only this.

I tilt my head up, inserting a paper-folded rose into his suit vest pocket.

Victor: You folded it?

I grunt a “hmm” rightfully.

MC: It was harder than making the pudding. It took a quite while to go back and forth and perfecting it.

I caress the petals of the origami rose, the edges of my fingers press against the folds of the paper, inadvertently tracing the seam of his suit vest as well.

MC: I’ve concealed a secret in there, won’t you open it and take a look?

Victor picks up the rose. With my guidance, he unwraps each petal, and the blooming flower is transformed into a snow-white letter paper.

Victor’s gaze sweeps across the few lines on the paper, and a deep emotion wells up in his eyes as he looks at me again.

MC: I initially just wanted to give you a few words of blessings. But I didn’t think that as I started writing.... I realized I have so much I want to say.

I want to tell you how important you are to me. I want to tell you how good it is to have you in this world.

MC: Ever since the day I met you, my whole world has changed....

MC: Every day of my life has become so enriched, and at every moment my heart has grown so steadfast.

MC: Every scenery I see seem to be masked in a layer of nice and warm filter, and every love song I hear connects with the emotions in my memory.

Victor: I’m very busy, and so are the people around me. So, I’ve always known very clearly that my birthday is not the most important thing.

Victor: If only the family and friends coincidentally happened to have some time, and if they happened to get carried away on a whim, they would specially celebrate this day.

Victor’s deep and low voice flows through my ears as his arms around me tighten increasingly, leaving not a crack between us.

Victor: After I met you, it’s been different.

Victor: You are the only one who treats this day as the most important time of the year, preparing to get up early, studying my preferences and my schedule over and over again.

Victor: ....spending time and thoughts to prepare gifts for me, and saying this happy birthday to me in the most ceremonial way possible.

Victor pauses. He reads the words on the letter several times, line by line, all over again.

Victor: You are the only one who reminds me of the trivialities as eating and sleeping like this.

Victor: You are also the only one who likes to make me happy with these amusing and cute little things.

He says, reaching out and nudging my face as I move forward, his fingertips poking my cheek lightly.

Victor: Before, I used to stand here alone and watch the night scenery.

Victor: No matter how many complicated or trivial things were piled up in my heart, I could only watch the night scenery here for a while, calm myself down, and then turn my head again to confront it.

Victor: ....after I met you, everything has changed.

Victor’s fingertips linger on the corner of my lips and the tip of my brow, while his gaze is casted towards the boundless night, looking at the shimmering logo of LFG high above the building.

Victor: I don’t have the whole world to give you either.

Victor: It’s only LFG that has made some achievements, and has some resources within its capability which may be able to help you accomplish a little something.

Victor turns his head and smiles at me, tucking up the coat that has slightly slipped off my shoulders.

Victor: This is an invitation.

Victor: I don’t know how I can arrange you into my future, and this is the only way that I can think of.

His serene voice blends into the night. For some reason, I actually feel that no matter how many times I hug him tightly, it will still never be enough.

I cling onto the side of his neck, trying to cling onto his soul as well.

Victor: When one is used to being accompanied by someone, to being taken care of by someone, to being valued by someone, they will unavoidably become spoiled.

Victor: Not only will they want it for every moment in the present, but they will want it for every moment in the future as well.

He stretches out his hand and feels the night breeze flowing through his fingers, feeling every second of time– reminiscent of invisible fine sand, it flows through the palm of his hand.

Victor: There’s never been a better time like the present for me to be able to appreciate the significance of the passage of time.

Victor: To be able to born into this world, to be able to feel these, is indeed.... worth commemorating.

I smile at him, extend my five fingers and count backwards—— five, four, three, two, one.

All the lights converge on the buildings across from us, fine dots of lights flickering and magnifying amid the darkness.

The glittering brilliance projects the entire night sky in resplendent colors.

Even if it is insignificant, I still want to give this person who has led me through the darkness countless times, a path of light sufficient to illuminate the curtain of night.

I don’t know how many times I have gazed into his eyes and quietly told him about my greatest wish.

MC: Happy birthday, Victor.

MC: Happy birthday.

I gaze into his quiet eyes, climb up my fingertips to his cheek, move my head closer, and give him a light peck on his lips.

MC: Be happy today, be happy every day.

Victor’s eyes brim with smiles. He lowers his head and places his lips on my cheek, moving to my lips little by little, kissing me tenderly and delicately.

The scorching temperature dispels the biting chill of the winter night.

Since then, every curtain of night I have seen has magnificent stars. And, every daybreak that I have waited for, the first glimmer of dawn has filled the entire landscape.

The light and shadow dazzle my eyes, making his dark colored eyes the only thing I can see in my horizon.

Victor: I am very happy.

Victor: I have been very happy every single day.

His deep voice lands on my ears, together with a generous embrace that draws every one of my senses into the warmest and most secure corner.

The shopping district’s as busy as the roads you’ve just driven by; food courts are the most bustling with the hour your phone marks: ten minutes past noon. Contraire to her punctual self, Brenda’s running late, though you settle for waiting ten more before sending her a message. You sit by an empty booth and take the last chair available in the row to avoid disturbing those who’re already eating. Then, you pull your planner out and skip through a few pages until you find the right one. Aside from your usual schedule, you had her visiting again this Friday, a meeting with Toriel regarding some plans she wanted to discuss with you on Saturday, and another one with Sans on Sunday to arrange the second step towards homeschooling Frisk while you enrolled them somewhere else.

It’s still hard to read that last one, not for what it was, but for the fact that almost every school you’d tried to sign them up into declined having other guardians aside from you and Jerry to pick them up. They declined Toriel just as much as they declined Undyne, all due to the new rules and regulations set up in schools since the monsters’ arrival. What Toriel wanted to discuss with you was related to that, though you hadn’t been given too many details as to what it was, exactly. You glance back to your phone to see over ten minutes have passed by already, yet Brenda's nowhere to be seen. You start typing up a message, only to be interrupted by her call; the device almost slips off your hands with how abrupt it is.

“H- Hello?” you answer, catching your breath.

She screams an accusation at you, not an ill-minded one per se, but one questioning over why you’d kept information hidden from her.

“Why didn’t you tell me you’re that close to him already?” she asks, words jarringly loud. You have to turn down the volume despite it not being set on speakerphone. “So he's going to help you with Frisk? That’s serious boyfriend material, honey!”

Thankfully, she sounds happy.

Still, a correction's deemed necessary.

“What do you mean, Brenda?”

“Auntie Brenda, mind you.”

You huff and bring a hand to the side of your neck, tension consuming it. “Alright, Auntie Brenda… Where are you right now? I don’t have much break time left anymore.”

“Just go ahead and eat, dear. I’ll drive over on the weekend.”

Right as you’re about to complain over her choices, she speaks up again, calmer than before.

“Or why not come over after you have lunch there?” she asks, words cooed. “You work close to him, don't you?”

“Thanks for the offer, but I’ll stay here.” You can’t help feeling a little sour over her suggestion and with the reminder you’ve waited almost half an hour for her at the mall. With the call, it’s now thirty-five minutes past noon, giving you barely sufficient time for you to eat -- let alone listen to her rambling over how she’d misinterpreted your relationship and how Sans was better than she expected him to be. “You didn’t bother him with questions about his job, right?" you add. "He’s-”

“Why would I? He’s working an office job just like you!"

“He, what?”

You can’t avoid blurting that question out; a blank canvas replaces the image of him working at a hot dog stand. You try to imagine him working an office job, but it's near impossible to. Even if he knew plenty on various subjects, the monotonous yet fast-paced ambience of a desk job didn’t quite fit with your view of who the monster was to you.

“He works an office job, honey. Don’t you know where your own boyfriend works?” You can almost hear her shaking her head, disappointment made known through the blatant change in her voice. “Shame on you!”

You pinch the bridge of your nose and stand up, too vexed to sit still. “That’s not what I meant, Bre- ...Auntie Brenda,” you say, trailing off on your words. “I just… didn’t know he worked two jobs.”

“He does?!”

You lower the volume once more, Brenda's voice taking up a speakerphone quality to it again. Her tone then grows fainter as she questions the skeleton about the legitimacy of your statement. When her voice turns louder, you figure he’s given her an answer -- one you’ve no clue of. If he had two jobs, then you’re not so sure over how she'll be reacting. And if he didn’t, then you’d inadvertently put him on the spot by letting the truth known, something that didn’t really make sense if he was supposed to be working -- or at the very least, ending his lunch break right now.

Feeling it’s going to take a while, you stand in line at one of the fast-food establishments nearest to you; a growl from your stomach reminds you time’s running out. “So what did he say?” you speak up, knowing she’s getting distracted again.

“He does!” she exclaims, almost in a cheer. “Why didn’t you tell me he was that well-off, then? You should marry him now that you’ve got the chance to.”

“Weren’t you scolding me over the opposite barely a week ago?”

“Maybe so, but that was before I knew him better, dear!”

You roll your eyes and sigh, headache worsening. “Alright, I’m hanging up now. Don’t bother him too much, and stop interrupting his-”

“Wait,” she calls, excitement still there. “Have you ever thought of learning more about monsters? There’s a bunch of workshops going on right now… And I figured you could take one, since you’re dating one and all!”

Nearly the time for you to make your order, you let your tone become sterner, hoping to get your point across. “That… That sounds good and all, but I really need to go now. My lunch break’s almost over.”

Brenda huffs. “Fine.” Her voice comes out dragged, and it’s almost possible for you to hear her pouting. “But we need to talk all about this on Friday!”

“Sure. See you then.”

“Farewell, dear!”

You hang up, slip your phone back in your pocket, and turn to the register when you’re done, right on time to make your order.

Breathe in, breathe out.

You repeat that sentence along with those actions as you clock out of work, more than ready to relax, but less than capable of with how much you've left to resolve.

Before turning off the computer, you click on your boss's e-mail for a third time today and read it once more.

You huff and glance at the pills on your desk. Despite these being given to you by the doctor herself, you're trying not to take them as often as the instructions on the bottle tell you to. You don't want to grow dependent on them, yet -- at the same time -- it's nearly impossible for you to go by your usual routine without having the repercussions of not taking them delay your progress. The side-eyes and looks some of your co-workers offer you on occasion reveal they're not too thrilled by the idea of having someone in your state around, either. Dizziness takes over and your headache worsens; they're enough for your body to finally give in, causing you to stumble out of your desk chair and direct all gazes on you.

Breathe in, breathe out.

It's just as impossible trying to ignore everyone, and it's even more difficult trying to stand up without making a complete fool of yourself.

Breathe in, breathe-

A hand's offered out to you; you accept it, yet you refuse to look at the person until you're back to your feet.

When you do look up, you recognize who the person is in an instant. It's the same man Sans had taken a picture with the day you first met. His hair looks different, but his face and clothing style remain the same. His hand stays holding yours until you assure him you're capable of standing straight again, and even then he still has his doubts. A subtle frown shows on his visage, fueled by concern.

"Are you alright, or should I call someone?" he asks, forehead creasing. "That fall looked pretty serious."

"I'm alright," you reply, managing a smile. You're still dizzy, the headache has only grown worse, and having people still looking in your direction doesn't help much with any of that, either. Even so, having him by your side along with a few other, approachable co-workers helps with bringing you back down to earth and allows you to find some more stability before going to meet with your boss.

"Excuse me, (L/N), but…"

You turn to the voice to see a woman -- tall, pale-skinned, and dark-haired -- offering you your phone. It takes some time, but you're able to recognize her as one of the few co-workers you spent your lunch break with before Frisk went missing. She's as professional as ever, and her formality still shows subtly through speech, yet it doesn't erase how warm and genuine her tone sounds. "Your phone broke with the fall." She pulls her hand back as soon as you have the device in your hold; her body language reveals she has a hunch in terms of just how 'alright' you really are, and what a twice-broken phone in less than a year could do to your current, physical and mental state alike. "It seems like it still works though, since it was ringing just a minute ago."

"Thank you." You turn it on to view a cracked screen. The update Alphys gave it appears to have made it more durable, based on how minor the damages are compared to the first time it fell. You're capable of unlocking it and even checking your notifications to notice you've got a few unread messages from Brenda and Frisk's school, coupled with a missed call from Sans. That last one is harder to take in. He already knew what hour you clocked out, and he had enough common sense and decency not to call you unless it was an emergency -- unlike Brenda, who didn't really know how to read the room, and Frisk's school, which called only when it was absolutely necessary. "I, uh…" You're not sure on what to do first. Brenda could be easily set aside with what she did during your lunch break, but the same couldn't be said for everything else.

Breathe in, breathe out.

You flinch at the sudden sensation of needles on your forehead and a dizziness so strong and wild, it makes your stomach far too queasy for you to manage with. Still, you combat that feeling by grabbing some gum from your belongings, taking a few, and chewing them all at once. The sharp taste and scent of mint helps wash away nausea, yet the dizziness persists.

"Do you want us to take you home, (L/N)?" the man from earlier asks, sounding more concerned than before. Meanwhile, the woman approaches you with some water, one you accept and drink as quickly as it falls in your hands. They both help sit you down on a different desk chair -- one without wheels to prevent you from falling over again. Most have left, while some stay and try to offer more aid. Your boss stands by the exit, arms crossed, stance firm, and face hard to read with how bad your symptoms have turned. "Or maybe accompany you to the bus stop, at least? You shouldn't drive in these conditions."

"It's…"

Your eyes fall on your phone again, tempted to make a decision.

With your priorities now changed to the subject of your health, you set Frisk's school aside with the knowledge they're with Toriel at this hour and forget about the meeting with your boss, aware she's already seen you from a distance. Only his name remains; truthfully, you'd rather limit how much time you spent with him, knowing what the opposite did to your heart and mind alike. You hesitate and stare blankly for a short while before you click on his missed call. One tap and two rings is all that's needed for you to reach him. It takes a second for you to answer back at him, half as much as it takes for your hand to stop shaking and for your voice to gain a better semblance of strength. It's too late to hang up now -- and his call could likely be an emergency -- so you continue forward with it.

"You don't sound too great. Everythin' okay?"

"About that…"

You share some words with him and refuse to tell him of your situation until he gives you his own reason for calling you at this hour.

"...Why did you call me?"

"It's about Frisk, but it ain't an emergency or anythin' -- it's good news, actually."

"Then why did y-"

"Listen, I don't mean to be harsh or nosy, but you sound awful right now. I can give you all the answers you need later, but could ya tell me what's wrong?"

You heave a small breath and look at the time, along with the hour of his missed call. He made it around eleven minutes past the end of your shift, so it wasn't exactly interrupting your job, but you're not sure how to interpret his call and the fact it was his first occasion calling you so close to your work schedule. Even if you were overthinking it, you didn't want to overlook anything, either. And then again, the state you're in isn't really the best for you to be questioning every little thing about your relationship with him -- at the moment, of course. "I feel sick. Kind of similar to that day at the hospital." You decide to be earnest, regardless of how dry your throat feels and how fast your heart goes. "I, well…"

"Want me to pick you up?"

Your ears turn hot while your hands do the opposite. "Y- Yeah…" Your chest tightens and your words grow faint, until you continue with, "I need your help, teddy bear."

"Teddy bear?" he asks, chuckling.

"You're calling me puddin' now, aren't you? You're a teddy bear in my eyes, then."

"I wonder why."

You smile.

"...See you in a bit?"

"'Course. I should be there in ten minutes max."

"Thank you."

With that, you say your farewells and hang up.

Now left to wait, you put your phone away, pick up the rest of your belongings, and stay with the company of your two co-workers as you make it to the exit. Your boss is still waiting next to it, yet she steps aside as do other people standing nearby, providing you with space to pass by. She says nothing, so you stop for a second, only to have her nod for you to carry on walking.

"Come to my office as soon as you recover, (L/N)."

That's the only thing she says as the door closes, leaving you with one co-worker by your left and the other by your right, both waiting in case you were to fall over again.

All healthcare/medical attention mentioned in this story is based off my country, meaning it's either free or at the very least, affordable enough that you don't have to choose between an Uber or an overpriced weewoo vehicle in case of a medical emergency.

For example: I pay only $10 for 4 different medicines I'm meant to take, 3 which are for a lifetime (example: thyroiditis), and the only thing my insurance doesn't cover is optometry, which is around $300 to $500 a year for a full exam and prescription!

Tl;dr: It isn't. There's no debt here so far, lol.

With 'Grotesque-marionette', I expressed the feelings of breathless alienation and the modern obsession that can not be expressed. I hope that the audience who saw the marionette series feel the relief and sympathy that they are different from them, and sometimes I want them to sympathize with the metamorphosed human existence of marionette. This work was inspired by the children selling Dia(if someone floats Dia on the river, it is known that the wish of the person is realized) on the Ganges River during my trip to India. The Ganges River is a place where life and death coexist, creating a strange atmosphere. I made an overall dark ambience by using ink stick, and I emphasized it by painting the eyes of the marionette and Dia by using oil color. The picture is attached to the panel, but the panel is very heavy and can be bent when it gets wet. Please let me know if you would like to receive the picture separated from the panel. How did you spend your birthday this year?

I spent it with my best friend, we went hiking, we had tacos & margaritas. It was a nice relief and an escape from the pandemic reality. It felt great. I also had a small family celebration later that weekend.

What was your most memorable day this year?

Getting into the sports coaching school. I came home from the office I had an internship, I was tired, I was in a crisis//survival mode, I was tired of business, of who I was. My life had little to no meaning anymore. I was a robot, I thought the world has very little to offer. Then I suddenly got an e-mail I got in. The entire world turned upside down. I am happier, I glow here, I belong here. It makes me cry having to think about it. It was the biggest blessing of 2020, hands down.

What was your most memorable meal you had this year?

There were many, but I think the most memorable and meaningful one was when my best friend baked a Ukrainian cheesecake and embraced her heritage. Also, making hummus with my new flatmates after moving to the dorm was a big one. Also, shakshuka became my comfort meal of the year.

Did you find any new hobbies or interests in quarantine?

Quite some, yes! I started paining again, I became a plant mom and a gardening expert, I grew my own cucumbers and tomatoes. I started baking again and make aesthetic moodboards on Pinterest getting pretty big following! It’s one of my favourite spare time activities now!

What was the last big event/thing you remember doing BC (before covid)?

Going clubbing with my friends, I miss going out and dancing my heart out.

5 good/positive things that happened to you in 2020:

Getting into my dream school!!!! I will be a sports performance coach, it still feels like an actual dream

Going to therapy and dealing with personal problems, it was one of the best decision of my life

Coming out to myself and living my truth

Losing the feeling of having to prove things to people

Learning that I can’t control everything and that it is okay. Life goes on. And it gets better.

Biggest messages or lessons learnt from this year?

Life can change within seconds, everything flows and goes, it in constant movements. Your inner critic lies, it will be okay and you will find yourself, find your heart. Love is loud. Love is beautiful, love makes the world go round. Growth is hard, overwhelmingly hard, but it is so so so so worth it. Magic happens everyday. Your gut knows, trust it. Protecting your peace is crucial for your sanity.

And what are you most looking forward to in 2021?

Living, simple as that. For me 2021 will be the year of presence - wherever I’ll be, I will be fully there.

1 - When you wake up, do you get up straight away or do you lie around in bed for a while? Lie in bed, even on work days. I work from home, so there’s nothing to prepare or look nice for, anyway. I can stay in bed and just roll out of it and head to my desk at 9 AM to start the day.

2 - Who was the last person you video-called with? Have you done this more often since COVID hit? Video calls make me anxious, so I’ve always turned them down even when it was someone I’m close with who was trying to call, like Angela. The only person I’ve felt comfortable having video calls with was Gab but that obviously hasn’t happened in a while. I think the last people I saw on video was my dad’s family, though I was still shy and asked my mom not to put me in the shot for too long.

3 - How many times a week do you go out for food or drink? Back then I’d do it 2-3 times a week. Then Covid happened and I had to stop; but now that I’m starting to try to put in more effort to take care of myself, I try to bring myself to a coffee shop for me time at least once during weekends.

4 - Do you prefer getting takeaway or actually sitting in a restaurant and eating your meal there? Dine-in. For me ambience is a big part of eating food, and even if I had the once-in-a-lifetime chance of getting to eat the absolute best meal in the whole world, if I’m eating it alone at home I would still feel like shit.

5 - Where’s your favourite place to get takeaway coffee (or whatever your drink of choice is)? Starbucks. We have five joints in the highway I live on alone, so it’s both a personal preference and a I-don’t-really-have-a-choice type of situation haha.

6 - Do you tend to keep your phone on silent, vibrate or loud? It’s on vibrate during work days; then I’ve formed a habit of putting it on Do Not Disturb during weekends or holidays.

7 - If you have pets, when was the last time one of them annoyed you? What happened? Cooper thought my hand was a toy earlier so he was biting on it, and not in a very playful way.

8 - When was the last time you went into a bookshop? Around a week ago when I was buying presents; I needed to get my cousin the mechanical pencils and eraser she wanted for Christmas. I also came across the bookshop that Gab and I would make a habit to visit, but I didn’t go inside as I didn’t know if I was prepared for the memories that would inevitably flood back. I looked through the stuff they had on their windows, though.

9 - What was the last thing you ordered off Amazon? I don’t know if Amazon operates here. But the last thing I got from a local e-commerce app - don’t judge me HAHA - is a phone socket featuring the face of my newest K-drama crush. I placed my order literally 10 minutes ago.

10 - When was the last time you took a dog out for a walk? Is this your own dog or did you borrow someone else’s? Yesterday. Both were my family’s dogs.

11 - What jewellery do you have on at the moment? Not wearing any, haven’t worn any in a while.

12 - Do you have any products in your hair right now? What are they? Just shampoo and conditioner. I never put anything else on it; I don’t really deem hair products other than those two a necessity.

13 - Have you ever used a VPN to access foreign content online? Hahaha no. I’ve wanted to try it out, but I’ve always been paranoid that the NBI would come knocking at my door the moment I install one of those.

14 - Who was the last artist you listened to? Is this someone you’re a fan of? She’s a Korean singer named Cheeze, though she’s honestly unfamiliar to me. The song she contributed for the OST of Start-Up is my absolute favorite in the entire tracklist, and that’s how I knew of her.

15 - What was the last thing you had to drink? I’m at a cafe joint right now and they didn’t have my usual order of caramel macchiato, so I opted for a Spanish latté because it sounded new to me.

16 - When was the last time you cooked something for the first time? Did it work out the way it was supposed to? I made a Monte Cristo sandwich, if that counts as ~cooking; this was about a little more than a monthh ago. It worked out significantly better than I was expecting, given how rubbish I am in the kitchen. I lacked a couple of ingredients, like mustard for the sauce and the right kind of cheese, but I still ended up liking it.

17 - Black cats are considered to be bad luck - is this a superstition that you’ve ever believed in? Not me personally, but I know this is still widely believed in my country. It’s sad, so I approach black cats whenever I can and play with them for a bit.

18 - Would you ever eat blue cheese or do you find the idea of eating mould to be pretty repulsive? It is definitely not my favorite; I’d say 5 times out of 10 I would consume it, and the other 5 I would set it aside. I enjoy it the most in pizzas and as a sauce for chicken wings.

19 - Do you visit the dentist every six months like you should? Is that the standard schedule? Lmao. I only go when I have to.

20 - How old were you when you first used the internet? Was it dial-up or did you have access to proper broadband? I was first exposed to the internet at around the ages of 3 and 4, when my mom would use the dial-up internet to email my dad (he had just started to work abroad). For many years I thought Yahoo Mail was the only website that existed, since that’s all I saw my mom use. Eventually my dad got broadband for the family by the time I was 10, and the first website I ever looked up was YouTube.

21 - Are you old enough to remember using floppy discs? I remember those; I just never had to use them myself.

22 - When was the last time you purchased an actual DVD or CD? Andi gave me a Petals For Armor CD for Christmas, if it counts. Because they’re the most awesome fucking friend. The last DVD I bought myself was probably a Beyoncé's Life Is But A Dream, which was...holy crap, 7 whole years ago.

23 - Do you shave? Which body parts and how often? I do. I shave my underarms every few days, and my legs monthly.

24 - What’s your favourite season, and what are some of your favourite things about that season? We don’t have the usual four seasons we hear about in other countries; we only have wet and dry. Between those two, I definitely like wet more because I love the rain, and I like how cold it can get.

25 - When was the last time you burned yourself? I took a big bite of a lumpiang togue yesterday when it was still piping hot, so it felt like I almost burned my tongue and the roof of my mouth. But since I was a guest at my dad’s family’s house, I couldn’t spit it out.

26 - Have you ever been the victim of a theft or robbery? What was stolen? Did the police ever catch the person who did it? Someone stole my wallet in high school, and I never got it back. It was a small petty thing that the police didn’t need to be involved in, lol. I know my mom’s family got robbed when she was a teenager, though; the worst thing that got stolen was their grand piano :(

27 - What was the last TV show you discovered that you really liked? What was it that got you to watch it in the first place? START UP. I first heard of it from my co-workers who would mention the show here and there; and because I was new to the team and wanted to have something in common with them so that I can break the ice, I figured I should start on the show myself. Ended up getting obsessed with the show and gaining a new Korean crush altogether.

28 - Have you seen any of the live-action Disney remakes? Which one is your favourite? What about your least favourite? No, those have never looked even remotely appealing to me. I never saw the point of recycling movies that already exist and already feel magical by themselves.

29 - Do you have any exciting plans for tomorrow? If not, how are you planning to spend your day? It doesn’t sound exciting on its own, but I’m very much looking forward to be a homebody tomorrow haha. We’ve been with extended family for five days straight and I’m at a café right now for some me time, so tomorrow I can’t wait to just be at home and lounge around.

30 - Would you ever keep a working dog as a pet? Do you think it’s fair to keep dogs like huskies in flats when it’s so different to their natural environments? If the dog is already trained or certified to be a certain kind of working dog, I don’t see the point in keeping them for myself when they could be beneficial for other purposes. The only time I see myself adopting a working dog is if they’re already at the point of retirement and would need a loving home to live out their remaining years.

1 - Are you a fan of garlic bread? Do you eat it on its own or as part of a bigger meal? Love garlic bread; I regularly have it with my pasta and occasionally, pizza.

2 - When was the last time your area was under some kind of weather warning? Did it end up being as bad as predicted? Last month, during Typhoon Rolly. Other cities had worse experiences, but it also wasn’t sunshine and rainbows on our end. We had a blackout for around two days and I had to file for an emergency leave four days into my new job, which was super embarrassing. It didn’t flood in our street but the water was high in other areas in our village, so we couldn’t go out for a while.

3 - Do you ever buy things from charity/thrift shops? What was the last thing you bought from there? I don’t recall ever buying anything from either.

4 - The last time you got fast food, did you eat in, takeaway or go through the drive-thru? My last fast food wasssssss Jollibee, and my parents got it for takeout so that we could eat as a family at home.

5 - If you have multiple pets, do they get along with each other? Hahaha no they don’t. It’s been six months since we got Cooper but the two still don’t get along, unless it’s Kimi trying to hump him. It’s understandable; Cooper is a vibrant pup that’s super excited and play bites all the time, and on the other side is a nearly 13 year old, nearly blind, can’t-smell-as-well-as-he-used-to senior dog; and I get that Kimi’s more sensitive to sudden movements now.

6 - Do you ever buy things off eBay? If you do, do you participate in auctions or do you just use the “buy it now” option? I never go on eBay. And since I’ve never checked it out, I never understood the gimmick of the website.

7 - When you go out, do you worry that you’ve forgotten to lock the door or turn something off? Yeah, this is especially the case with locking the front door.

8 - What fruits and vegetables have you eaten so far today? Do you tend to get your “five a day”? I didn’t know five a day is a thing of some sort; but it’s only 8:47 AM and I haven’t eaten anything at all yet today.

9 - When was the last time you were in pain? What caused it and did you manage to get it sorted in the end? Last night when my back was giving me hell. As for the cause...idk, years of bad posture maybe? I was able to deal with it for a bit with the new massage pillow that my dad got for Christmas.

10 - Do you live in an area that gets lots of snow? Do you like it? If not, would you like to live somewhere that gets that cold? I would love to move somewhere that’s generally more cold. Humidity gets exhausting to deal with.

11 - What was the reason for your last doctor/hospital visit? My fever had already been lasting for a week and wasn’t showing signs of going away. No Covid symptoms, just pure hellish fever.

12 - If someone had told you that 2020 would see a global pandemic, countries going into lockdown, compulsory face masks and millions of deaths, would you have ever believed that you’d live through something like that? My personal biggest surprise for 2020 wasn’t even the pandemic. I would have had a more violent reaction if I was told I would no longer be in a relationship and be barely talking to my then-girlfriend of six years by the end of 2020.

13 - Do you prefer having the blinds/curtains open or closed when you’re at home? Does it depend on the weather or the time of day? Always closed. I don’t ever voluntarily open the curtains or windows to let the sunshine in.

14 - Do you use an ad-blocker on your computer or phone? Why/why not? I use one on my laptop because the ones on YouTube can be extremely annoying. I didn’t know it was possible to put on ad blockers on phones (is it?).

15 - Do you still use a paper diary/planner to organise your appointments and schedules? No, but I’m thinking of getting a planner again for 2021. I used to get a Starbucks planner every year just because I wanted to get into their Christmas promo hype, but I never completed any of them. Now that I’m working and am busier all around, I see the bigger need for a planner. These days, I use a Google extension called Momentum to list down my to-do tasks. My parents also got me a corkboard for Christmas on which I stick notepads with things I have to do for the day.

16 - When was the last time you charged one of your electronic items? Do you have to charge that specific item often? I’m charging my laptop now. At this point it’s always plugged in because I want to keep the cycle count low, though I’m not sure if it’s the healthiest thing to do.

17 - Have you ever thrown or broken something in a temper? Yes, definitely. I’m not normally aggressive when angry, but sometimes it happens.

18 - What does your outfit look like today? Did you pick it out for a special reason? I have on a black sundress that I didn’t change out of. I wore it yesterday when I went to a coffee shop to spend some time on my own.

19 - Do you follow any vlogs or podcasts? What is it about them that interests you? I do follow certain channels who do vlogs, but I never tune into them since most of them have gotten a little uninteresting. I’m also subscribed to several podcasts like Andi’s and Renee Young’s, but I’m not always in a podcast mood; I subscribe because I want to support them.

20 - Aside from Tumblr, what websites do you spend the most time on? Do you go through phases of visiting certain websites? I visit Twitter and YouTube the most often. I will binge Reddit every now and then, and I will get into a Wikipedia black hole at least once a week.

21 - Do you have a good relationship with your siblings? If you don’t have siblings, what about your cousins or extended family? I do not maintain a relationship with my brother after he physically assaulted me last year. My sister and I are on good terms, but we’re not close in that I can cry to her or that we know each other’s secrets. We have a very good casual relationship, and we never argue.

22 - When was the last time you were up early enough to see the sunrise? I hate the sun so I don’t really do that lol.

23 - What movie series did you last watch from start to finish? Was it one you’d seen before? I only ever do this with Twilight. I have my annual Twilight Saga marathon where I watch all five films in one afternoon hahaha.
