[INTERVIEW] TRANS: MINI MAGAZINE
 JAPAN 1st mini ALBUM RELEASE
Congratulations on releasing your first Japanese album! What did you feel like when you heard about this?
Yeri I was really excited because this song wasn’t like the ones we sang in Korea.
Wendy I still can’t believe we got to release an original song in Japan and film a music video too. When I first heard that we were going to do a Japan tour, I couldn’t believe it either, so I was nervous.
Your new Japanese song “#CookieJar” was cute and easy to sing along to!
Seulgi The song is overflowing with energy, so we said that this was a good song from when we started practicing it. I’m happy because everybody is feeling the same energy from the song.
Irene I think it’s cute how the five of us all sing “#Cookie Jar!” So I hope everybody can get pumped up.
Wendy Even at the concerts, the crowd was really excited!
Yeri When I first learned the point choreography, I was a bit confused, but I was glad because Nakasone Rino (the choreographer) taught me how to do it in person.
Joy We first filmed the music video in the woods. Digging the dirt there was memorable. The baseline of the song is good too, so you can feel that this is a great song from the start.
Irene The lyrics use a lot of onomonopeia like “twinkle twinkle,” and "fluffy" so it helped me learn Japanese. (Laughs)
It’s been five years since your debut, and you have countless hit songs. Please choose songs or music videos that you like!
Seulgi “Ice Cream Cake.” The music video’s concept and filming it was fun, and I like the memorable songs too.
Irene For me, “Rookie!” The point dance is hard because there’s a lot of them, but it’s fun when you sing and dance to it.
Joy I like “Bad Boy” because we could try out a new concept and also because it’s about an independent and cool woman.
Irene I have a lot of memories related to “Happiness.” Dancing in a set in teh middle of a forest and eating ice cream... It’s also really hard to forget because it was our first song.
Wendy I think “Ice Cream Cake” was the song where we got to appeal the many genres that we could do. Also, I think we were able to express the emotions of a girl falling in love for the first time vividly thanks to Yeri joining the team. When we sing it now, it has a different kind of feeling to it, and I like that too.
Did the labelmates give you any advice before your Japan debut?
Irene I haven’t been able to meet the other artists recently, but when we met at comeback stages and the like, they told us what song in the new album they liked. It felt reassuring to see that they had always kept an eye on us.
Seulgi When we go to cheer for the other artists, we study how they perform and how they interact with the fans. Recently, we went to TVXQ’s concert, and seeing how the two of them filled up a whole stadium rekindled our passion. We thought they were cool.
Lastly, leave a message for the readers of mini magazine!
Irene I’m really happy because we’re releasing a song in Japan. Please cheer for us a lot.
Seulgi I’m happy because we can meet our fans in Japan with a new song. We’ve done our best and have prepared a lot, so please look forward to it.
Joy I’m happy because we got to be interviewed by a Japanese magazine for the first time with mini magazine, and because it was a good experience. We did our best for the photoshoot. I hope I get to meet with you guys even more from now on!
Yeri (in Japanese) I wanted to be starred in a Japanese magazine from long before. (In Korean) I hope we get to do this more often.
Wendy Although we still have a long way to go, we’ll do our very best. Please give us lots of love♡
Red Velvet ♥ GIRL’S TALK...
mini magazine is focused on street fashion, so we’re focused on t-shirts, jeans, and sneakers. How many of those items do you guys own? Tell us if you collect anything, what you like and more, please!
Wendy For t-shirts, I like big and comfortable ones. I’m not that tall, so I wear high-waist jeans often. For sneakers, I’m looking for something like the Nike air max in a unique color right now!
Seulgi I really like jeans a lot! I wear a lot of those, from fitted ones to straight ones!
Yeri I like t-shirts made from good fabric, so at home, I have a heap of identical t-shirts. (Laughs)
Joy I’m into retro and vintage styles these days, so I’m looking for old-fashioned sneakers these days. I like retro Nike air maxes and old-school style jeans too.
Irene I like gym clothes, because they fit well. I wear t-shirts that look well on me often.
Who has the best sense of fashion in the team?
Seulgi Everybody has different styles, so I think we’re all fashionistars?!
Then who likes shopping the most?!
Irene Some go shopping often, while others buy everything they need at once. (Laughs)
Seulgi I’m the type of person who goes shopping often, but buys little at once. Joy and Irene are the ones who buy everything at once. Wendy and Yeri don’t go shopping often.
Wendy I’m the type of person who thinks a lot before buying something, so I shop on the web usually. There’s always something in my online shopping cart. (Laughs)
It looks like you all are into vintage things.
Joy Because they’re one of a kind, it’s fun to look for them too.
Seulgi When I first bought one, the other members were like “What’s this?” But it seems like they’ve all started to fall in love with its charms. (Laughs)
Please explain the different styles of the other members!
Joy When Seulgi tries a new fashion style on, even if it’s a puzzling item, she wears it well, and confidently enjoys it. I think that’s cool.
Wendy Seulgi tires even more clothes on while experimenting with fashion, so she’s a fashionista! (Laughs)
Seulgi Thank you very much. (Laughs) Irene likes clean fashion, so I think that goes along well with her personality.
Wendy Yeri also has her own style, right? Sometimes, I doubt whether the clothes are going to look well on her, but she pulls it off well. (Laughs)
Yeri (Laughs) Wendy looks well in street fashion, so I wish she’d wear it everyday!
Joy Someone explain my style too~!! (Laughs)
Wendy Before, Joy liked feminine clothes, but recently she’s interested in trying on various fashion items!
Seulgi I bought a lot of things from the vintage shops in Japan. I want to see her try them on soon♡
What do you think is cute about Korean and Japanese fashion?
Yeri I thought that Japan had lots of colorful clothes. In Korea, the fashion magazines write more about monochrome fashion compared to pastel colors. Both are cute.
Seulgi Before, I thought Korean and Japanese fashion was really different, but recently, I think the’re growing alike. Is it because the two cultures mixed with each other and took in the good parts of others?
Yeah! The two countries’ street styles look alike! By the way, could you tell us what kind of makeup you’re into these days?
Wendy I’m into coral colored makeup. I like makeup that doesn’t use eyeliner much and accentuates the eyeshadow colors. You can find this style a lot in the Japanese magazines too.
Irene I like dont’ like heavy makeup too. I do simple make up that shows who I am naturally.
Your makeup looks really cute today♡
Wendy (in Japanese, loudly) Oh~~~ Thank you so much, hairdressers and makeup artists~!!
All of you have great skin. What kind of skincare do you guys do?
Joy I only wear makeup for work, to let my skin rest, and I always wear sunblock. I also use aloe lotion too.
Irene I also don’t wear makeup usually. And going to the dermitologist often! I guess that’s it? (Laughs)
Do you do anything to keep in shape?
Irene I like working out, so when I have time, I move my body a lot.
Joy I eat once or twice a day, and try to keep my stomach empty for certain amounts of time.
Yeri I ate avocados and salmonsㅡwhich I loveㅡa lot.
Seulgi Whenever you go out, you have to dress up well. If you wear fittd clothes instead of baggy ones, you can know how your body changes. Once you know that, you can’t help but to start caring about that.
How do you split the rooms up at the dorms? And tell us the fun things about living together!
Irene Joy and Yeri, Seulgi and Wendy room together, and I have my own room.
Yeri We’re always pumped up when we come back home after practices, right?
Seulgi Don’t we get the loudest when we eat something that someone else ordered in together?! (Laughs)
By the way, how do you choose what to eat?!
Wendy When someone has something they want to eat, they order it and the other members join in ♡
