"Oh, you're right..." crck-cra-crk "What a pain."
~
"Isn't that time of year coming up again?"
Strands of straw scratched the desk as pale hands picked them up, twisting them together.
"Does anyone at school know?"
"Mm... no." click clck "They love me too much to ask such an invasive question... the people in Fukazawa loved me, too, but Hidari Wakibara's just nicer about it."
A small piece of string was pulled off the desk, the spool it had been preemptively cut from only a few inches away.
A half-finished doll of straw crackled as nimble fingers picked it up. Long bits of straw extending out from the mostly-empty armhole were grabbed, and the extra straw tucked itself in.
More string was reached for.
"Jealous..." he mumbled, thin curls hanging before his eyes that glared down at the straw. "They were so jealous of me, they humiliated and ostracized me..." crrk-ck-crak-crk "Fools... Jealous fools..."
"Don't think about them. They're behind us now."
"Ku-ku-ku... You're right... Why waste my time on them when they're not around to hear it? They'll regret being so mean to me one day..."
The string tied itself off.
"Do you have a person in mind for that one?"
"No, not yet. Maybe that Sawakita, if he dares mock me again..." cck-crk "Or maybe that fortune teller She was telling us about. Fortune telling... Any two-bit hack could do that, with this nation's prime selection of idiots."
The doll set itself down.
An almost-empty bowl once filled with red-stained shaved ice clicked as the spoon within it was grabbed, a hand hooking around it to push it closer before it picked it up.
"I could visit them tomorrow..."
The spoon raised some ice to a set of chapped lips with nails poking out between them. The head tilted back, spoon slipping between the nails.
"All you have to do is--" He swallowed. "--start a rumor about a fortune teller. They'll talk about it for at least a day, and you can get the name then."
"Good idea. Get them to do the work. Ke-ke-ke. Finally, those mindless fools will do something for me... Maybe that so-called psychic will trick them into thinking she'll spare them the time of day! He-he-he! The only person in school more revered than I, and yet I seem to be the only one that can see right through her!"
"What kind of charm must she possess, to have people tripping over themselves to say hi?"
"It's pathetic!" More ice was scooped up. Once he'd swallowed, he continued, "I can't help but feel bad for those poor people... Sawakita's so far gone, he's deluded himself into hating me!"
"He'll be sorry one day."
"Oh, yes he will. He'll be so sorry, he'll fall to his knees and beg to be forgiven! Ha-ha-ha! He'll shove his nose into the ground and cry for my approval! He'll--grk--"
One hand flew up to cradle his left shoulder.
The bowl fell out of his hand, rolling down his legs and thumping against the back of the desk. The spoon fell to the side.
Features screwed themselves up in pain just before his head banged the desk.
Shudders racked his body, spine curving as nails dug into the cloth on his shoulder.
He took a few breaths.
Souichi opened one of his eyes. He shifted his head, eyes landing on a half-melted but otherwise full bowl of red ice set to the side on his desk.
"Are you gonna finish that?" he strained out to the empty room.
