Hi there! Happy new week lovelies. It is self-care Sunday here on Love Dvra. We are black history, but do we love where we are now? Do we love who we are now? When you look in the mirror do you admire what and who you see? Is your body a loved, protected home or a tired, overly-criticized vessel that gets you through the day? It is a conversation I’ve had with myself several times. Here is what I uncovered. As a young girl and teenager, my natural hair was heavily criticized and rarely complimented. It was “too nappy, too dry, too frizzy, too short, too kinky, or too hard to manage”. In my teen years, I desperately wanted a perm to stop those criticisms and the weight of negative emotions that came after hearing them. In my logical mind, a perm would make it easier to try new hairstyles. My go-to style was three puffs- two in the front and one in the back. I did not know how to take care of my hair. Sometimes dealing with it made me feel powerless. It was a challenge to feel confident in my appearance. There were very few hairdressers who knew how to style my hair. Most of their methods included heat, rough detangling and gel, which led to breakage. Yes, I hated my hair. Even now, I find myself reacting to it in ways others did in the past. It is so ingrained in my psyche that even when I see the beauty of my hair now, sometimes it feels like it’s not enough or should be different to be better. Can we call it hair trauma? Now I wear my hair natural mainly because it is more affordable and I know how to take care of it as is. However, there is still so much I would like to learn to treat it better. If I were to change my hair, I’m at a point where it would be from a place of necessity or curiosity instead of a need to fit in or for others to accept me. This inner dialogue about my body and hair made me question a lot of what I considered to be beautiful. What is beauty to me and how do I want to express that? I am still creating that, but so far I know I want to be healthy. I know I want to remain authentic. Koroba braids, bantu knots, afros, locs, weaves, perms, waves, pin curls- I want to try them all! The versatility black women have created for their hair and the stories that can be told from our style positively intrigues me. Beauty is a holistic experience. It is physical, creative and also spiritual, mental, and emotional to me. A black woman who loves her natural hair and complexion is less likely to perform her blackness and feminity in any space she enters. She simply exists and radiates as is. I can’t deny that the perception of blackness and beauty creates tension at times. We are so accustomed to being treated as spectacles when we show up as ourselves that some of us put up a wall. Like myself, it can be weary to constantly ignore people’s comments on the natural state of your hair, especially around people who we hoped would do better. These days I’ve had to guard myself against comments from a few persons in my life. They have natural hair, but the only way they can accept it is if it is in braids, cornrows or a bun. At times I’d like to ask them if my shrinkage is too black for them. We learned to diminish our natural appearance to appease those in charge of corporate spaces, schools, financial institutions and governance so we could gain access to the important support they offered. Mind you, the state of my hair is merely for my convenience. I will straighten it as long as it is safe and convenient to do so. However, it is so funny how it is perceived as defiance of authority or the status quo in its natural state. Why does the status quo think tightly coiled African hair is a rebellion? If we all were to allow these limitations to stop us, where would we be as a people? Our ancestors fought for freedom, for access to basic needs and for a better tomorrow. Now, we fight for unbiased access to spaces we qualify for, we fight for rest and softness, we fight to be able to express the full range of our emotions without being labelled as threats, and we fight for generational...

Extemporania
Unfortunately, there’s not a lot going on for me in the “on the air” world right now. The last big event for me was FOBB. Since then, I have been bogged down with yard work and now my left calf and hamstring muscles have decided to remind me of my age. I guess I overworked them when the tendinitis in my right ankle and knee flared up.
But in the meantime, I keep eyes and ears open for neat stuff. I’ve come up with two things. This first was spotted on the DVRA Facebook page. The DVRA is the Delaware Valley Radio Association, which is more or less based out of the Princeton/Trenton area of New Jersey. They posted this Hamfest notice back in 1939.
Wow! Can you believe this? This ain’t your normal Hamfest – this is your Grandpa’s Hamfest! And from the looks of it. buying and selling radio gear seems to be the last thing on everyone’s mind. This was a downright picnic on steroids!
Two live orchestras for music, a Jitterbug contest, a baseball game, lots of food, plenty of prizes and gifts and it was scheduled to run from 10:00 AM until 8:00 PM. This was probably the social event of the year for this club.
I can just picture in my mind’s eye the washtubs that were filled with ice holding bottled beer, soda and probably watermelons. Notice there’s nothing in the announcement about buying and selling stuff. And it kind of figures as back in 1939 you built your own gear. Yaesu, Kenwood and Icom didn’t probably even exist back then – at least not here in the States. If Hams got together at that time to buy and sell stuff, it was most likely parts that you might need for whatever your next project happened to be. Boy, to be able to go back in time!
The other thing I picked up on was this YouTube video that Marv K2VHW had posted to the SPARC Facebook page. It’s for an MFJ antenna.
youtube
It looked very intriguing to me, so I bit the bullet and ordered one. What the heck, right? It should be delivered to my door tomorrow from the tracking number that MFJ provided, and I hope to use it for the Skeeter Hunt. Cotton Street park in town has more than enough real estate required to deploy this. I know, I know, I don’t normally buy antennas, other than my Butternut or the GAP when I had that many moons ago. I’m the big advocate for building your own antennas – so what’s going on? Not sure, I was just intrigued by the video and decided to plunk down the coin, almost as a whim. If it works as advertised, then this will be my antenna for Field Day next year for the CW station. The W3EDP works well, but the results as seen in the video seem to indicate a much better match than the W3EDP. Besides, a Ham can never have too many arrows in his antenna quiver, right? The more the merrier and too many antennas to pick from is better than not having enough. Should the antenna end up being a dud, I’ll post about that here, too. 72 de Larry W2LJQRP – When you care to send the very best!

“ Yah Sunbae--- what the heck....” She whispered to herself in the comfort of her dorm room that she shared with her rapper who was passively ignoring her exclamations in the corner of the room. Of course by now everyone was used to the gaming queen of their group ( and maybe of Dimensions PERIOD ) making weird and strange noises as furious clicks filled whatever room she was in. When it had been made public knowledge a few years back how good she was at games, including her rank being shown during broadcast , other gamers that may have been shy otherwise had reached out to play with her. It was a bit comforting to play with other idols who understood her schedules and not by herself with randoms who might now question her identity . Still it was tough finding a full team most of the time and most of the time she could only find one other gamer who matched her schedule well, and that was Taehyun sunbae . Ever since they had become gaming buddies a year ago they had kept up a good level of communication-- from a distance of course. Even know she would occassionaly send him memes over kakao or the latest update news on one of the games they played together. Right now they were tucked into their favorite game , Overwatch, the game that gave 7rophys leader the nickname “DVRA” and created various fanarts of her as the mech wearing gunner tank. Usually their comp games went without much of a hitch but lately.... Taehyun sunbae... “ Hey, you know you’re running Tracer on Defense right? You’re toast , we don’t have enough healers to cover you and the enemy is coming in hard. “ She said into her mic after connecting to team chat. He didn’t usually make such odd choices so naturally she was concerned, and his play style had been uncharacteristically sloppy for the night. “ Are you tired? We don’t have to play competitive if you’re too tired to function, we can always play another game too. “ “ or do you need to sleep ? “ @taehyunfmd

Love Dvra Style Saturday: The Initiation
Hi lovelies! It’s been a while since I’ve spoken about style, fashion and all things apparel-aesthetic-beauty! Let’s change that shall we? I feel like Saturday is a good day to talk about style. It’s the weekend. It’s the day to clean up the week’s mess, throw on a cute outfit and enjoy life. If you’re like my Caribbean parents then you’ll use the day to clean and get laundry done. It’s always…
