TUNNEL FIRES CONTINUE TO BURN – DAMAGE ‘IN THE MILLIONS’
Fires continued to burn in a railroad tunnel in Haverstraw today after a Penn Central train derailment Thursday morning which caused six injuries, the evacuation of 100 people and damages estimated "in the millions of dollars.
Firemen, hampered by intense heat and crumbling walls, had difficulty fighting the blaze. More than 100 firemen were driven out of the tunnel Thursday night by smoke, heat and falling concrete.
The 52-car train, carrying new cars and chemicals, derailed at about 7:30 a.m. Thursday. Conductor Gerald Leech of Catskill, N.Y., and brakeman Louis Lajeuness of Waterford, N.Y. suffered minor injuries in the crash. The engineer, Charles Carpenter of Catskill, N.Y., was apparently uninjured. Carpenter was the engineer of a Penn Central train which collided with a school bus in Congers in March 1972, resulting in the deaths of five Nyack High School students.
Firemen Bob Cusack, James Avaras and Brian Beckel were treated for smoke inhalation at Nyack Hospital later Thursday. A railroad employe, John Misseri, no address available, was in guarded condition at Nyack Hospital after being struck in the chest with falling concrete. Police say the accident occurred as railroad workers attempted to clear debris from the tunnel.
The derailment, which created one of the most complicated firefighting problems in Rockland's history, occurred at 7:30 a.m. just as the three lead diesel engines were approaching the south end of the tunnel.
There has been no explanation as to what caused the accident, and Penn Central officials said its investigative team, on the scene since early morning, would need "at least two or three days" to make a complete report.
Haverstraw police chief John Bubenko ordered the evacuation of residents along Riverside Avenue, near the north tunnel entrance, an area known as "Dutchtown", shortly before 1 p.m.
An estimated 100 persons, about 30 families, left the area in buses, and officials said most of them planned to stay with relatives.
Bubenko said the evacuation was ordered as a precautionary measure: "We don't know for sure what's in that tunnel —- and we're just not going to take any chances."
Traffic along 9W, one of Rockland County's major north-south arteries began to back up near Haverstraw by 9 a.m. and by noon, one motorist described it as "just one helluva mess."
State police set up detour points both north and south of Haverstraw at noon, diverting traffic to alternate routes, but sightseers and the curious still jammed the area.
At the height of the drama, as many as 500 firemen and police were in and around the scene.
Fire-fighting units from Haverstraw. West Haverstraw, Stony Point, Garnerville, New City. Valley Cottage, Congers, Nyack and Spring Valley all had apparatus at or near the blaze.
Throughout the late morning and afternoon, small drumlike explosions could be heard inside the tunnel. Firefighting officials said these were probably from exploding tires and gas tanks.
The chemicals listed on the train, besides the hydrogen peroxide, included 800 bags of Bethyl Thenol, which officials said would burn at 200 degrees and give off a noxious odor —- but was non-poisonous.
A spokesman from the Dow Chemical Co. also said the company had a report that one of the "piggy-back" trailers was carrying an insecticide petroleum substance that was not explosive but would, if burned, give off irritating fumes.
By early afternoon, Penn Central had moved giant, 100-ton cranes into position at both ends of the 1600 foot tunnel, and officials were waiting only for the heat and fire to subside before trying to remove the derailed cars.
It wasn't until about noon that a "jerry-rigged" system was set up that pumped water from the Hudson River.
Then high pressure hoses were used to "cool down" the north tunnel entrance and huge fans, called "smoke extractors" were set in place to suck out the thick black smoke.
At one point in the mid-morning, a Haverstraw fireman said: "This is the most frustrating fire I've been to —- and I've been going to them now for about 30 years.
"We don't know what's in that tunnel; we can't get the right kind of water pressure; nobody seems to know what Penn Central is going to do. It's a mess ... a real mess. . ."
For most of the morning and through the early afternoon, there was nothing the gathering of firemen could do but look at the thick, black smoke tumbling skyward from the tunnel entrance.
Penn Central spokesman Joe Harvey said the original 52-car train was bound from Kalma-zoo, Mich. to North Bergen, N.J.
He said the train was made up of three diesel engines; 38 auto carriers; and 12 flatbed cars carrying semi-trailers.
The three diesels and 14 other cars, five of them carrying new automobiles, were scattered across the tracks inside the quarter-mile-long tunnel.
He said the semi-trailers carried an assortment of cargo, including washing machines; auto parts; chemical fertilizer; glass; and cardboard.
Penn Central officials said they would not try to move the derailed cars until either the fire was put out or until it eventually "burned out.''
Harvey said the stretch of Penn Central tracks involved would "definitely" be out of commission for three or four days and that freight traffic would be re-routed.
He said it was too early to put any estimate of damage to the roadbed, the cars or the cargo. "It's obviously going to be up in the millions of dollars. We just don't know yet…”

Soaring costs have St. Louis renters struggling to stay in their homes
Tiffany Johnson had a mouse issue in St. Louis. In her Carondelet duplex, they crept behind the walls and gnawed on bags of chips in the pantry. She reached her breaking point when she noticed a tail vanishing down the drain as she was putting her children in the bathtub. But it would take her six months to find a new home. The eviction embargo imposed by the pandemic and federal stimulus money helped to mostly contain a housing problem that had been raging for years, but it has roared back this summer. Low-income earners are clutching for a lifeline as a result of rising inflation, skyrocketing real estate costs, and a decreasing availability of affordable rentals, and housing advocates are raising the alarm. “It will be a train wreck, and it’s coming right down the tracks toward us,” said Robert Swearingen, an attorney with Legal Services of Eastern Missouri. Johnson, an Amazon driver, settled into a home in Dutchtown in May. The rent is out of reach at $1,510 per month, which is two-thirds higher than what she had been paying for the duplex. The five children's mother saves every penny she can. While she works, her sibling or siblings care her children. Unless she needs to get to an appointment, she never drives. And in what seems like a lost effort to reduce her electricity use, she unplugs everything. “My Ameren bill is so high,” said Johnson. “It’s just ridiculous.” Numerous Americans' budgets have been destroyed by an inflation peak that lasted four decades. Costs for food are up 11%. Despite recent drops, the price of gasoline is still 19% higher than it was a year ago. Although some expenses can be cut (e.g., by turning down the air conditioning or using public transportation), housing costs are set. Unless they're speeding up. According to real estate data provider Clever, rent increases are occurring across the country more than four times as quickly as income increases. Rent increases in St. Louis began before the outbreak. Smaller units have faced an even higher climb: One-bedroom apartments saw a 14% increase from 2015 to 2019; studio units saw an 18% increase. “There’s a lot of things going on all at once, putting pressure on low-income people,” said Yusef Scoggin, the director of human services for the city of St. Louis. “The amount of assistance coming in is unprecedented, but the people needing assistance is at a whole other level.” Eighty organizations that offer housing assistance get funding from the United Way of Greater St. Louis. 37% of contacts to the United Way helpline in the six months before the pandemic were about housing-related. That had risen above 45% in the first half of the year.

The Investigation
Once upon a time there was very tall detective whose name was Goldilocks and he investigated the three bears on vacation in a house in Dubai. So the tale is not the IIII it appears to be. They never are. He didn’t like being called Goldilocks. It was an offshoot of his business which includes heavy parts sarcasm, irony and mispeech in order to bear the trials of the daily work. All the detectives had nicknames, a female was Boise Boysee, a looker has to suffer. Donald duck, Don for short, lived on the canal. Lambragingee, Lambri, got caught driving a bike to work. They all had their crosses each put the other on. Goldy for short had surfer hair, not slicked back, but fuzzed out like the auroa of the sun, or at least when the sun had an aurora. As you suspect in yer in all tall white dudes he was Dutch, but with some other blood that suggested in the aborigy, but we’re not here to discuss the gene pool. That district was named for the airport and took in the less affluent parts of town, the warehouses, pulperias, lumberyards along the dust banks and the downtown landfills, squatter camps, extending to the base of the towers up and over. They divided that valley into north and south and naturally south for all misanthropes the chumacca lies. This was the way of those explorers not only to the west and southwest but to the globe. Didn’t they say we love the centric part, pretending the globe girl and in the girl well we know the center lies…
He could have been called moonbeam, or sunshine, or starlight, but the goldy thing wasn’t helped by his breaking open the case of the three oops, called oops yes, but also ooks, and they are mighty big bears, or/and they might have been bears, big fat grizzlies that would eat ya be forewarned, which is the offing of the folktales abounding and surrounding these events.
The investigation proceeded first hand, but eventually led to a series of folk tales, street tales emenating in those neighboods among the freeways and tide flats of the toxic plumes of TCE that flowed their merry way west from the old Motoola plants. The tales grew up at the time those plumes were fast flowing and it continues underground much the way the tales about the oops ooks did, changing shape, permutatijgn , perculating, through the aq
Uifers, Ubers of the strata, drifting down to the salt itself. It the tales are toxic so are the plumes and the alumina air, presume, down to the very word faer in the old tongue before the Dutch, in that book besides Goldy’s bed. That ‘s like the tales that Goldy found so much he became a forlift himself, fork-lorist, collector of coyote tales, Hopi legends, Navajo forts along not just rio salado, but north of course and down in the canyons among the brush wees of the rio grande and above that up to the Colorado running cold. I means the tales were that way, some put upon poles, or walls in praty paint, some found in old pamphlets with hints in the old painters of Dutchtown as it was then called, with degrazia untouched, found in the thrifts, touches un approved [add other painters] but westers case more as blue riders than realists. The tales exploded at various points into epiphanies of nonsense and whimsy all which was suitable f for the amnesia of the times which substituted the blast of the sun at 110 for indoor pleasures of freezer rooms and packages of orm meat that stopped the force of crime so many days that still sleepy town of 5 million grew to 10 when all the refugees finished their arrival. They would know nothing of the history of their new solace without such tales as these. Not that Dave, that’s his real name, Dave Hunt, Goldilocks, or Dave Cash, would collect them in any other form that a murder book held closely in the department. Grand juries supposed this and a lot more. Wires and surveillance even more. So we have a lot to tell, not to go on and on about the docket and the process. In that town they take their teenagers for a night in the lockup as a precaution, same as their tales are still painted on buildings, if you can read the symbolism. They are part of the decoration now, licensed by the signage of the city , liegit, people eating eat other under the rubric of nonsense. So read the billboards more closely and look for signs of the revelation.
Police procedure dictates that these things stored in cold cases and archives can only be leaked sourcelessly to the press so a lot of what occurs below is just that, stuff from murder boards and books, interviews, interpretations, ver batium transcripts and the lithe like. How you get these exclusives is part known part not, and if yor’re worried about language, native speakes determine the language, I am a native speaker form the breast therefore I have carte blanc. White socks is a symbol of their innocence. Trade in Body parts is one part of cannibalism. In the mix of truth and fantasy I did review this book cited at the end.Dave was more of a linguist than he let on. He had an anglo saxon dictionary by is bedside and read it to go to sleep.
4/11/18 Wed. Faer Press: “The Old English word above holds inside it many meanings. It is a going, a journey, a way, a journeying, an expedition, a road, a passing, a course, a march, a voyage, a path; it is a place where passage is possible, a thoroughfare, an entrance; it is that in which a journey or voyage is made – a vehicle, vessel, carriage, ship, ark; it is a body of persons who journey, a crew; it can also mean fear, peril, danger, sudden, intense and beautiful. [information gathered from the Bosworth-Toller Anglo-Saxon Dictionary]…This word can conjure others too if you look at it long enough: it could be the just-out-of-sight otherworld of færy; it could be a gathering of festive merriments from afar – a fair, or the gift one would give to another at such an occasion – a fairing…”

[ad_1] Getty Images Alabama edge rusher Will Anderson Jr. is one of the top prospects, regardless of position, as we look ahead to the 2023 NFL Draft. A five-star prospect out of Dutchtown High School in Georgia, Anderson immediately became a force along Alabama's defensive line. His best season came in 2021 -- when he led the nation with 34.5 tackles for loss and 17.5 sacks en route to finishing fifth in Heisman Trophy voting -- but he was dominant throughout his time in Tuscaloosa. He finished his career second in program history in both tackles for loss (62.0) and sacks (34.5) -- trailing only Pro Football Hall of Famer Derrick Thomas in both categories.Below is a comprehensive draft profile for Anderson, including his scouting report, prospect ranking, pro comparison, combine results, college and high school accolades and overall NFL outlook.Note: This profile will be updated as more information becomes available.AboutAge: 21Year: JuniorHometown: Hampton, GeorgiaInteresting fact: Led FBS in tackles for loss (34.5) and sacks (17.5) in 2021Position: No. 1 EDGE | Overall: No. 1 | Rating: 94.40 (All-Pro)NFL combine measurements/resultsWill Anderson Jr.'s measurements/results from the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine will be added once they become available.Scouting reportA five-star from outside Atlanta, Will Anderson Jr. has been as good as -- and maybe better than -- advertised since arriving in Tuscaloosa.
